Two new phases of hydrogen have been discovered at room temperature in Ref.1: phase IV above 220 GPa and phase V above ~270 GPa. In the present work we have found a new phase VI at P~360 GPa and T<200 K. This phase is likely metallic as follows from the featureless Raman spectra, a strong drop in resistance, and absence of a photoconductive response. We studied hydrogen at low temperatures with the aid of Raman, infrared absorption, and electrical measurements at pressures up to 380 GPa, and have built a new phase diagram of hydrogen.
According to the theoretical predictions, insulating molecular hydrogen dissociates and transforms to an atomic metal at pressures P~370-500 GPa. In another scenario, the metallization first occurs in the 250-500 GPa pressure range in molecular hydrogen through overlapping of electronic bands. The calculations are not accurate enough to predict which option is realized. Here we show that at a pressure of ~360 GPa and temperatures <200 K the hydrogen starts to conduct, and that temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity is typical of a semimetal. The conductivity, measured up to 440 …
We report Raman scattering and visible to near-infrared absorption spectra of solid hydrogen under static pressure up to 285 GPa at 85-140 K. We obtain pressure dependences of vibron and phonon modes in agreement with previously determined to lower pressures. The results indicate the stability of the ordered molecular phase III to the highest pressure reached and provide constraints on the insulator-to-metal transition pressure.
Hydrogen-rich superhydrides are believed to be very promising high-Tc superconductors as they are expected to mimic characteristics of metallic hydrogen. Recent experiments discovered superhydrides at very high pressures, e.g. FeH5 at 130 GPa and LaH10 at 170 GPa. With the motivation of discovering new hydrogen-rich high-Tc superconductors at lowest possible pressure, here we report the prediction and experimental synthesis of cerium superhydride CeH9 below 100 GPa in the laser-heated diamond anvil cell. Ab-initio calculations were carried to evaluate the detailed chemistry of the Ce-H system …
By employing first-principles metadynamics simulations, we explore the 300 K structures of solid hydrogen over the pressure range 150-300 GPa. At 200 GPa, we find the ambient-pressure disordered hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phase transited into an insulating partially ordered hcp phase (po-hcp), a mixture of ordered graphene-like H2 layers and the other layers of weakly coupled, disordered H2 molecules. Within this phase, hydrogen remains in paired states with creation of shorter intra-molecular bonds, which are responsible for the very high experimental Raman peak above 4000 cm-1. At 275 GPa,…
$δ$-AlOOH is of significant crystallochemical interest due to a subtle structural transition near 10 GPa from a $P2_1nm$ to a $Pnnm$ structure, the nature and origin of hydrogen disorder, the symmetrization of the O-H$\cdots$O hydrogen bond and their interplay. We perform a series of density functional theory based simulations in combination with high-pressure nuclear magnetic resonance experiments on $δ$-AlOOH up to 40 GPa with the goal to better characterize the hydrogen potential and therefore the nature of hydrogen disorder. Simulations predict a phase transition in agreement with our nucl…
Hydrogen has been the essential element in the development of atomic and molecular physics1). Moving to the properties of dense hydrogen has appeared a good deal more complex than originally thought by Wigner and Hungtinton in their seminal paper predicting metal hydrogen2): the electrons and the protons are strongly coupled to each other and ultimately must be treated equally3)4). The determination of how and when molecular solid hydrogen will transform into a metal is the stepping stone towards a full understanding of the quantum-many body properties of dense hydrogen. The quest for metal hy…
The structural, electronic, and spectroscopic properties of a high-pressure phase of methane hydrate (MH-III) are studied by first principles electronic structure calculations. A detailed analysis of the atomic positions suggests that {\it ionization} of hydrogen-bonded water molecules occurs around 40GPa and {\it centering} or symmetrization of hydrogen-bonds occurs around 70 GPa. These pressures are much lower compared with ioninzation around 55 GPa and centering around 100 GPa in pure ice. The transition may be observed with low-temperature IR/Raman spectroscopy of OH stretching modes or ne…
In previous work,1 we showed that hydrogen metallizes in phase III at temperatures below ~200 K and at pressures near ~350 GPa. Here, we perform a detailed study of electrical conductivity R(T) in phase III over a pressure range of 200-400 GPa and a temperature range of 80-300 K, and we show that hydrogen transforms from a semiconducting to a metallic state already at ~315 GPa. This transformation is also supported by Raman spectroscopy: the Raman signal intensity decreases with pressure in accordance with the appearance and increase of electrical conductivity. Moreover, the Raman and electric…
In recent years there has been intense experimental activity to observe solid metallic hydrogen. Wigner and Huntington predicted that under extreme pressures insulating molecular hydrogen would dissociate and transition to atomic metallic hydrogen. Recently Dalladay-Simpson, Howie, and Gregoryanz reported a phase transition to an insulating phase in molecular hydrogen at a pressure of 325 GPa and 300 K. Because of its scientific importance we have scrutinized their experimental evidence to determine if their claim is justified. Based on our analysis, we conclude that they have misinterpreted t…
Atomic metallic hydrogen has been produced in the laboratory at high pressure and low temperature, prompting further investigations of its different properties. However, purely experimental approaches are infeasible because of the extreme requirements in producing and preserving the metastable phase. Here we perform a systematic investigation of the electronic, optical, mechanical and thermal properties of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen at 495 GPa using first-principles calculations. We calculate the electronic structure and dielectric function to verify the metallic behaviour of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen. The…
Atomic metallic hydrogen with a lattice with FDDD symmetry is shown to have a stable phase under hydrostatic compression in the range of pressure 350 - 500 GPa.
Hydrogen bond symmetrisations in H-bonded systems triggered by pressure induced nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) is a long-known concept1 but experimental evidences in high-pressure ices have remained elusive with conventional methods2,3. Theoretical works predicted quantum-mechanical tunneling of protons within water ices to occur at pressures above 30 GPa and the H-bond symmetrisation transition above 60 GPa4. Here, we used 1H-NMR on high-pressure ice up to 90 GPa, and demonstrate that NQEs govern the behavior of the hydrogen bonded protons in ice VII already at significantly lower pressures t…
Production of metallic hydrogen is one of the top three open quests of physics. Recent low-temperature experiments report different metallization pressures, varying from 360GPa to 490GPa. In this work, we simulate structural properties, vibrational Raman, IR and optical spectra of hydrogen phase III accounting for proton quantum effects. We demonstrate that nuclear quantum fluctuations downshift the vibron frequencies by 25%, introduce a broad line-shape in the Raman spectra, and reduce the optical gap by 3eV. We show that hydrogen metallization occurs at 380GPa in phase III due to band overla…
A vast amount of Raman spectroscopic data, obtained using diamond anvil cell technique under in situ high pressure-temperature conditions, has been used for mapping the phase transitions of hydrogen in the temperature range of 300 K to 900 K and pressure up to 300 gigapascal, a pressure-temperature region in which most phase information was unknown previously. The isothermal and isobaric dependencies in frequency and peak width for intramolecular vibration Raman mode of hydrogen are established based on thousands of data files which are measured during hundreds of independent high pressure-tem…
Evolutionary structure searches are used to predict stable phases with unique stoichiometries in the hydrogen-rich region of the magnesium/hydrogen phase diagram under pressure. MgH$_4$, MgH$_{12}$ and MgH$_{16}$ are found to be thermodynamically stable with respect to decomposition into MgH$_2$ and H$_2$ near 100 GPa, and all lie on the convex hull by 200 GPa. MgH$_4$ contains two H$^-$ anions and one H$_2$ molecule per Mg$^{2+}$ cation, whereas the hydrogenic sublattices of MgH$_{12}$ and MgH$_{16}$ are composed solely of H$_2^{δ-}$ molecules. The high-hydrogen content stoichiometries have a…
Evolutionary structure searches predict three new phases of iodine polyhydrides stable under pressure. Insulating P1-H5I, consisting of zigzag chains of HI (delta+)and H2(delta-) molecules, is stable between 30-90 GPa. Cmcm-H2I and P6/mmm-H4I are found on the 100, 150 and 200 GPa convex hulls. These two phases are good metals, even at 1 atm, because they consist of monoatomic lattices of iodine. At 100 GPa the Tc of H2I and H4I are estimated to be 7.8 and 17.5 K, respectively. The increase in Tc relative to elemental iodine results from a larger omega-log from the light mass of hydrogen, and a…
Atomic and electronic structures of Cu2H and CuH have been investigated by high pressure NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and ab-initio calculations. Metallic Cu2H was synthesized at a pressure of 40 GPa, and semi-metallic CuH at 90 GPa, found stable up to 160 GPa. Experiments and computations suggest the formation of a metallic 1H-sublattice as well as a high 1H mobility of ~10-7 cm2/s in Cu2H. Comparison of Cu2H and FeH data suggests that deviations from Fermi gas behavior, formation of conductive hydrogen networks, and high 1H mobility could be common features of metal hydrides.
The principal Hugoniot for liquid hydrogen was obtained up to 55 GPa under laser-driven shock loading. Pressure and density of compressed hydrogen were determined by impedance-matching to a quartz standard. The shock temperature was independently measured from the brightness of the shock front. Hugoniot data of hydrogen provide a good benchmark to modern theories of condensed matter. The initial number density of liquid hydrogen is lower than that for liquid deuterium, and this results in shock compressed hydrogen having a higher compression and higher temperature than deuterium at the same sh…
Recently, several research groups announced reaching the point of metallization of hydrogen above 400 GPa. Following the mainstream of extensive investigations of compressed polyhydrides, in this work we demonstrate that small (4 atom %) doping of molecular hydrogen by strontium leads to a dramatic reduction in the metallization pressure to about 200 GPa. Studying the high-pressure chemistry of the Sr-H system at 56-180 GPa, we observed the formation of several previously unknown compounds: C2/m-Sr$_3$H$_{13}$, pseudocubic SrH$_6$, SrH$_9$ with cubic F-43m Sr sublattice, and pseudotetragonal P…
We report here the evidences of hydrogen bond symmetrization in the simplest amino acid- carboxylic acid complex, glycinium oxalate, at moderate pressures of 8 GPa using in-situ infrared and Raman spectroscopic investigations combined with first-principles simulations. The protonation of the semioxalate units through dynamic proton movement results in infinite oxalate chains. At pressures above 12 GPa, the glycine units systematically reorient with pressure to form hydrogen bonded supramolecular assemblies held together by these chains.
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, and its properties under conditions of high temperature and pressure are crucial to understand the interior of of large gaseous planets and other astrophysical bodies. At ultra high pressures solid hydrogen has been predicted to transform into a quantum fluid, because of its high zero point motion. Here we report first principles two phase coexistence and Z method determinations of the melting line of solid hydrogen in a pressure range spanning from 30 to 600 GPa. Our results suggest that the melting line of solid hydrogen, as derived from…
In contrast to carbon, which forms long polymeric chains, all-nitrogen chains are very unstable. Here we found that nitrogen and hydrogen directly react at room temperature and pressures of about 35 GPa forming a mixture of nitrogen backbone oligomers - chains of single-bonded nitrogen atom with the rest of the bonds terminated with hydrogen atoms - as identified by IR absorption, Raman, X-ray diffraction experiments and theoretical calculations. The pressure required for the synthesis strongly decreases with temperature to about 20 GPa at 550 K. At releasing pressures below about 10 GPa, the …
We use the diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) method to calculate the ground state phase diagram of solid molecular hydrogen and examine the stability of the most important insulating phases relative to metallic crystalline molecular hydrogen. We develop a new method to account for finite-size errors by combining the use of twist-averaged boundary conditions with corrections obtained using the Kwee-Zhang-Krakauer (KZK) functional in density functional theory. To study band-gap closure and find the metallization pressure, we perform accurate quasi-particle many-body calculations using the $GW$…
A hexagonal structure of solid molecular hydrogen with $P6_122$ symmetry is calculated to be more stable below about 200 GPa than the monoclinic $C2/c$ structure identified previously as the best candidate for phase III. We find that the effects of nuclear quantum and thermal vibrations play a central role in the stabilization of $P6_122$. The $P6_122$ and $C2/c$ structures are very similar and their Raman and infra-red data are in good agreement with experiment. However, our calculations show that the hexagonal $P6_122$ structure provides better agreement with the available x-ray diffraction …
Molecular hydrogen was pressurized in a diamond anvil cell at temperatures between 5 and 83 K. At a sufficiently high pressure, estimated to be between 477 to 491 GPa, hydrogen became metallic, determined by its reflectance in the near infrared and fit to a Drude free-electron model. We then studied the predicted metastability of metallic hydrogen. At a temperature of 5 K the load on the metallic hydrogen was stepwise reduced until the pressure was zero. While turning the load or pressure down, the sample evidently transformed to the molecular phase and escaped; the sample hole closed. We esti…
It is generally assumed that solid hydrogen will transform into a metallic alkali-like crystal at sufficiently high pressure. However, some theoretical models have also suggested that compressed hydrogen may form an unusual two-component (protons and electrons) metallic fluid at low temperature, or possibly even a zero-temperature liquid ground state. The existence of these new states of matter is conditional on the presence of a maximum in the melting temperature versus pressure curve (the 'melt line'). Previous measurements of the hydrogen melt line up to pressures of 44 GPa have led to cont…
Through a series of Raman spectroscopy studies, we investigate the behaviour of hydrogen-helium and hydrogen-nitrogen mixtures at high pressure across wide ranging concentrations. We find that there is no evidence of chemical association, miscibility, nor any demixing of hydrogen and helium in the solid state up to pressures of 250 GPa at 300 K. In contrast, we observe the formation of concentration-dependent N$_2$-H$_2$ van der Waals solids, which react to form N-H bonded compounds above 50 GPa. Through this combined study, we can demonstrate that the recently claimed chemical association of …
The laws of quantum mechanics are often tested against the behaviour of the lightest element in the periodic table, hydrogen. One of the most striking properties of molecular hydrogen is the coupling between molecular rotational properties and nuclear spin orientations, giving rise to the spin isomers ortho- and para-hydrogen. At high pressure, as intermolecular interactions increase significantly, the free rotation of H2 molecules is increasingly hindered, and consequently a modification of the coupling between molecular rotational properties and the nuclear spin system can be anticipated. To…
We synthesized two C-S-H compounds from a mixture of carbon and sulfur in hydrogen and from sulfur in mixed methane-hydrogen fluids at 4 GPa. X-ray synchrotron single-crystal diffraction and Raman spectroscopy have been applied to these samples up to 58 and 143 GPa, respectively. Both samples show a similar Al2Cu type I4/mcm basic symmetry, while the hydrogen subsystem evolves with pressure via variously ordered molecular and extended modifications. The methane bearing sample lowers symmetry to an orthorhombic Pnma structure after laser heating to 1400 K at 143 GPa. The results suggest that su…
SnxSey crystalline compounds consisting of Sn and Se atoms of varying composition are systematically investigated at pressures from 0 to 100 GPa using the first-principles evolutionary crystal structure search method based on density functional theory (DFT). All known experimental phases of SnSe and SnSe2 are found without any prior input. A second order polymorphic phase transition from SnSe-Pnma phase to SnSe-Cmcm phase is predicted at 2.5 GPa. Initially being semiconducting, this phase becomes metallic at 7.3 GPa. Upon further increase of pressure up to 36.6 GPa, SnSe-Cmcm phase is transfor…
Ab initio molecular dynamic method within the framework of density functional theory is applied to analyze the structural and electronic properties of crystalline molecular hydrogen at temperature 100\,K. Pressure, pair correlation function and band structure are calculated. The crossover of molecular crystalline hydrogen from the state of a semiconductor to a semimetallic and metallic state is observed upon compression in the pressure range of 302-626\,GPa. At pressures below 361\,GPa, the molecular crystal with the C2/c structure is a semiconductor with an indirect gap. In the pressure range…
A class of iridium hydrides, IrH_x (x=0.5, 1-4, 6), is calculated at ab-initio level using the DFT. A number of hydrides are predicted to stabilize in the excess hydrogen environment and upon compression. The threshold pressure for thermodynamical stabilization is calculated to ~5 and ~14 GPa at which, respectively, a trihydride (P6_3mc) and a dihydride (Ibam) stabilize with respect to decomposition into pure element. The dihydride (Ibam) is calculated to stabilize dynamically at P~14 GPa and the trihydride at P > 25 GPa. In both the di- and trihydride iridium atoms form short directional cont…
The stability of different stoichiometric H$_n$Br ($n$=1-7) compounds under pressure are extensively studied using density functional theory calculations. Five new energetically stable stoichiometries of H$_2$Br, H$_3$Br, H$_4$Br, H$_5$Br, and H$_7$Br were uncovered at high pressure. The results show that HBr is stable below 64 GPa, then decomposes into new compound H$_2$Br and Br$_2$ molecular crystal. For H$_2$Br and H$_3$Br compounds, they were found to become stable above 30 GPa and 8 GPa, respectively. In addition, we accidentally discovered the triangular H$_3^+$ species in H$_5$Br compo…
The effect of pressure on the room temperature solubility of hydrogen in Zircaloy-4 was examined using synchrotron X-ray diffraction on small ground flake samples in a diamond anvil cell at pressures up to 20.9 GPa. Different combinations of hydrogen level/state in the sample and of pressure transmitting medium were examined; in all three cases examined, it could be concluded that pressure resulted in the dissolution of d hydrides and that interstitial hydrogen retards the formation of w Zr. A pressure of around 9 GPa was required to halve the hydride fraction. These results imply that the eff…
Tin sulfides SnxSy are important class of materials that are actively investigated as novel photovoltaic and water splitting materials. First-principles evolutionary crystal structure search is performed with the goal of constructing the complete phase diagram of SnxSy and discover new phases as well as new compounds of varying stoichiometry at ambient conditions and pressures up to 100 GPa. The ambient phase of SnS2 with P3m1 symmetry remains stable up to 30 GPa. Another ambient phase, SnS experiences a series of phase transformations: including α-SnS to β-SnS at 9 GPa, followed by β-SnS to γ…
We have studied dense hydrogen and deuterium experimentally up to 320 GPa and using ab initio molecular dynamic (MD) simulations up to 370 GPa between 250 and 300 K. Raman and optical absorption spectra show significant anharmonic and quantum effects in mixed atomic and molecular dense phase IV of hydrogen. In agreement with these observations, ab initio MD simulations near 300 K show extremely large atomic motions, which include molecular rotations, hopping and even pair fluctuations suggesting that phase IV may not have a well-defined crystalline structure. The structurally diverse layers (m…
Knowledge of the behavior of hydrogen in metal hydrides is the key for understanding their electronic properties. So far, no experimental methods exist to access these properties beyond 100 GPa, where high-Tc superconductivity emerges. Here, we present an 1H-NMR study of cubic FeH up to 200GPa. We observe a distinct deviation from the ideal metallic behavior between 64 and 110 GPa that suggests pressure-induced H-H interactions. Accompanying ab-initio calculations support this interpretation, as they reveal the formation of an intercalating sublattice of electron density, which enhances the hy…
In their recent work Dias and Silvera (Science 2017) claim to have observed the Wigner-Huntington transition of hydrogen to a metallic state (MH) at a pressure of 495 GPa at low temperatures. The evidence for this transition is based on a high electron carrier density deduced from a Drude free electron model fitted to the reflectivity of the sample. Based on our analysis of the reflectivity data we find no convincing evidence for metallic hydrogen in their published data. The pressure determination is also ambiguous - it should be ~630 GPa according to the presented Raman spectrum. For compari…
Silicon undergoes a phase transition from the semiconducting diamond phase to the metallic beta-Sn phase under pressure. We use quantum Monte Carlo calculations to predict the transformation pressure and compare the results to density functional calculations employing the LDA, PBE, PW91, WC, AM05, PBEsol and HSE06 exchange-correlation functionals. Diffusion Monte Carlo predicts a transition pressure of 14.0 +- 1.0 GPa slightly above the experimentally observed transition pressure range of 11.3 to 12.6 GPa. The HSE06 hybrid functional predicts a transition pressure of 12.4 GPa in excellent agre…
Dynamic compression has been used to synthesize liquid metallic hydrogen at 140 GPa (1.4 million bar) and experimental data and theory predict Al2O3 might be a metallic glass at ~300 GPa. The mechanism of metallization in both cases is probably a Mott-like transition. The strength of sapphire causes shock dissipation to be split differently in the strong solid and soft fluid. Once the 4.5-eV H-H and Al-O bonds are broken at sufficiently high pressures in liquid H2 and in sapphire (single-crystal Al2O3), electrons are delocalized, which leads to formation of energy bands in fluid H and probably…
A theoretical study is reported of the molecular-to-atomic transition in solid hydrogen at high pressure. We use the diffusion quantum Monte Carlo method to calculate the static lattice energies of the competing phases and a density-functional-theory-based vibrational self-consistent field method to calculate anharmonic vibrational properties. We find a small but significant contribution to the vibrational energy from anharmonicity. A transition from the molecular Cmca-12 direct to the atomic I4_1/amd phase is found at 374 GPa. The vibrational contribution lowers the transition pressure by 91 …
BaBiO$_3$ is a mixed-valence perovskite which escapes the metallic state through a Bi valence (and Bi-O bond) disproportionation or CDW distortion, resulting in a semiconductor with a gap of 0.8 eV at zero pressure. The evolution of structural and electronic properties at high pressure is, however, largely unknown. Pressure, one might have hoped, could reduce the disproportionation, making the two Bi ions equivalent and bringing the system closer to metallicity or even to superconductivity, such as is attained at ambient pressure upon metal doping. We address the high-pressure phase diagram of…

We present a technique for extracting Raman intensities from ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at high temperature. The method is applied to the highly anharmonic case of dense hydrogen up to 500 K for pressures ranging from 180 GPa to 300 GPa. On heating or pressurizing we find first-order phase transitions at the experimental conditions of the phase III - IV boundary. Direct comparison of Raman vibrons with experiment provides excellent discrimination between subtly different structures, found in MD. We find candidate structures whose Raman spectra are in good agreement with expe…
It was predicted that solid metallic hydrogen can be obtained if solid molecular hydrogen is pressured to high pressure at low temperature about 80 years ago. Furthermore, the solid metallic hydrogen was theoretically predicted to show superconductivity at room temperature. In addition, surprising prediction was made that the solid metallic hydrogen is a metastable metal with a potential barrier of 1 eV. This prediction implies that the solid metallic hydrogen remains in the metallic solid phase state even after it is released from high pressure. Shock compression synthesized liquid metallic h…
X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements, and first-principles calculations are performed to search for the formation of NaCl-hydrogen compound. When NaCl and H$_{2}$ mixture is laser-heated to above 1500 K at pressures exceeding 40 GPa, we observed the formation of NaClH$_{\textit{x}}$ with $\textit{P}$6$_{3}$/$\textit{mmc}$ structure which accommodates H$_{2}$ molecules in the interstitial sites of NaCl lattice forming ABAC stacking. Upon the decrease of pressure at 300 K, NaClH$_\textit{x}$ remains stable down to 17 GPa. Our calculations suggest the observed NaClH$_{\textit{x}}$ …

We calculate the structural and electronic properties of OsB2 using density functional theory with or without taking into account spin-orbit (SO) interaction. Our results show that the bulk modulus with and without SO interaction are 364 and 365 Gpa respectively, both are in good agreement with experiment (365-395 Gpa). The evidence of covalent bonding of Os-B, which plays an important role to form a hard material, is indicated both in charge density, atoms in molecules analysis, and density of states analysis. The good metallicity and hardness of OsB2 might suggest its potential application a…
Based on crystal chemistry considerations and quantum density functional theory ground state calculations, rhombohedral rh-C3 and hexagonal h-C6 carbon allotropes are proposed and energetically calculated as new stable ultra-hard phases likewise lonsdaleite. Along the two kinds of carbon in linear C2-C1-C2 lattice, distorted tetrahedra C2(sp3) with an angle of 106.17° (smaller than ideal 109.4°) and C1(sp)-like hybridizations are inferred from charge density projections. The calculated elastic constants point to a strong anisotropy of mechanical properties of rh-C3 and h-C6 with an exceptional…
We have studied solid hydrogen up to pressures of 300 GPa and temperatures of 350 K using density functional theory methods and have found "mixed structures" that are more stable than those predicted earlier. Mixed structures consist of alternate layers of strongly bonded molecules and weakly bonded graphene-like sheets. Quasi-harmonic vibrational calculations show that mixed structures are the most stable at room temperature over the pressure range 250-295 GPa. These structures are stabilized with respect to strongly-bonded molecular phases at room temperature by the presence of lower-frequen…
We study the electronic and lattice dynamical properties of compressed solid germane in the pressure range up to 200 GPa with density functional theory. A stable metallic structure, Aba2, with a base-centered orthorhombic symmetry was found to be the lowest enthalpy phase for pressure from 23 to 177 GPa, suggesting an insulator to metal phase transition around 23 GPa. The Aba2 structure is predicted to have higher superconducting transition temperature than SiH4 reported recently, thus presenting new possibilities for exploring high temperature superconductivity in this hydrogen-rich system.
In this work we show, that atomic metallic hydrogen (AMH) is formed inside of sintered oxide-nickel electrodes of nickel-cadmium battery over a long period of electrochemical hydrogenation (more than five years). It was established that density AMH is 12 times higher, than the density of liquid molecular hydrogen, the specific energy of hydrogen recombination is 20 times higher than of liquid hydrogen-oxygen fuel. At the room temperature AMH is a good conductor, but not a superconductor.
The primary purpose of this paper is to stimulate theoretical predictions of how to retain metastably hydrogenous materials made at high pressure P on release to ambient. Ultracondensed metallic hydrogen has been made at 140 GPa at finite temperatures T in the fluid. The term metallic here means quantum mechanically degenerate. A single sample of ultracondensed hydrogen has been made at an estimated pressure of 495 GPa at 5.5 K. Whether that sample is solid or fluid remains to be determined. Those results imply the long quest for metallic hydrogen is likely to be concluded in the relatively ne…
We carried out high-pressure resistivity and Hall-effect measurements in single crystals of CdTe and ZnTe up to 12 GPa. Slight changes of transport parameters in the zincblende phase of CdTe are consitent with the shallow character of donor impurities. Drastic changes in all the transport parameters of CdTe were found around 4 GPa, i.e. close to the onset of the cinnabar to rock-salt transition. In particular, the carrier concentration increases by more than five orders of magnitude. Additionally, an abrupt decrease of the resistivity was detected around 10 GPa. These results are discussed in …
