We present an algorithm to approximate the solutions to variational problems where set of admissible functions consists of convex functions. The main motivator behind this numerical method is estimating solutions to Adverse Selection problems within a Principal-Agent framework. Problems such as product lines design, optimal taxation, structured derivatives design, etc. can be studied through the scope of these models. We develop a method to estimate their optimal pricing schedules.
The paper is devoted to the study, characterizations, and applications of variational convexity of functions, the property that has been recently introduced by Rockafellar together with its strong counterpart. First we show that these variational properties of an extended-real-valued function are equivalent to, respectively, the conventional (local) convexity and strong convexity of its Moreau envelope. Then we derive new characterizations of both variational convexity and variational strong convexity of general functions via their second-order subdifferentials (generalized Hessians), which ar…
We prove existence of radially symmetric solutions and validity of Euler-Lagrange necessary conditions for a class of variational problems such that neither direct methods nor indirect methods of Calculus of Variations apply. We obtain existence and qualitative properties of the solutions by means of ad-hoc superlinear perturbations of the functional having the same minimizers of the original one.
According to a result due to B.T. Polyak, a mapping between Hilbert spaces, which is $C^{1,1}$ around a regular point, carries a ball centered at that point to a convex set, provided that the radius of the ball is small enough. The present paper considers the extension of such result to mappings defined on a certain subclass of uniformly convex Banach spaces. This enables one to extend to such setting a variational principle for constrained optimization problems, already observed in finite dimension, that establishes a convex behaviour for proper localizations of them. Further variational cons…
In this paper, we propose a general algorithmic framework for first-order methods in optimization in a broad sense, including minimization problems, saddle-point problems, and variational inequalities. This framework allows obtaining many known methods as a special case, the list including accelerated gradient method, composite optimization methods, level-set methods, Bregman proximal methods. The idea of the framework is based on constructing an inexact model of the main problem component, i.e. objective function in optimization or operator in variational inequalities. Besides reproducing kno…
The so-called l0 pseudonorm, or cardinality function, counts the number of nonzero components of a vector. In this paper, we analyze the l0 pseudonorm by means of so-called Capra (constant along primal rays) conjugacies, for which the underlying source norm and its dual norm are both orthant-strictly monotonic (a notion that we formally introduce and that encompasses the lp norms, but for the extreme ones). We obtain three main results. First, we show that the l0 pseudonorm is equal to its Capra-biconjugate, that is, is a Capra-convex function. Second, we deduce an unexpected consequence, that…
This work addresses the occupation measure relaxation of calculus of variations problems, which is an infinite-dimensional linear programming relaxation amenable to numerical approximation by a hierarchy of semidefinite optimization problems. We address the problem of equivalence of this relaxation to the original problem. Our main result provides sufficient conditions for this equivalence. These conditions, revolving around the convexity of the data, are simple and apply in very general settings that may be of arbitrary dimensions and may include pointwise and integral constraints, thereby co…
We study dynamic minimization problems of the calculus of variations with Lagrangian functionals containing Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals, classical and Caputo fractional derivatives. Under assumptions of regularity, coercivity and convexity, we prove existence of solutions.
In this paper, we consider interval-valued vector optimization problems $(IVOP)$ and derive their relationships to interval vector variational inequalities $(IVVI)$ of Minty and Stampacchia type in terms of convexificators and LU-efficient solution of $(IVOP)$ using LU-convexity assumption. Furthermore, we consider weak versions of $(IVVI)$ of Minty and Stampacchia type and find the relationships between weak versions of $(IVVI)$ of Minty and Stampacchia type and weakly LU-efficient solution of $(IVOP)$. The results presented in this paper extend and generalized some existing results in the li…
We study compressible and incompressible nonlinear elasticity variational problems in a general context. Our main result gives a sufficient condition for an equilibrium to be a global energy minimizer, in terms of convexity properties of the pressure in the deformed configuration. We also provide a convex relaxation of the problem together with its dual formulation, based on measure-valued mappings, which coincides with the original problem under our condition.
The support of a vector in R d is the set of indices with nonzero entries. Functions of the support have the property to be 0-homogeneous and, because of that, the Fenchel conjugacy fails to provide relevant analysis. In this paper, we define the coupling Capra between R d and itself by dividing the classic Fenchel scalar product coupling by a given (source) norm on R d. Our main result is that, when both the source norm and its dual norm are orthant-strictly monotonic, any nondecreasing finite-valued function of the support mapping is Capra-convex, that is, is equal to its Capra-biconjugate (…
Optimality conditions in the form of a variational inequality are proved for a class of constrained optimal control problems of stochastic differential equations. The cost function and the inequality constraints are functions of the probability distribution of the state variable at the final time. The analysis uses in an essential manner a convexity property of the set of reachable probability distributions. An augmented Lagrangian method based on the obtained optimality conditions is proposed and analyzed for solving iteratively the problem. At each iteration of the method, a standard stochas…
A variational model for learning convolutional image atoms from corrupted and/or incomplete data is introduced and analyzed both in function space and numerically. Building on lifting and relaxation strategies, the proposed approach is convex and allows for simultaneous image reconstruction and atom-learning in a general, inverse problems context. Further, motivated by an improved numerical performance, also a semi-convex variant is included in the analysis and the experiments of the paper. For both settings, fundamental analytical properties allowing in particular to ensure well-posedness and…
We study the time optimal control problem for differential inclusions with a general closed target. We first give the representation of the proximal horizontal subgradients of the minimum time function $\mathcal{T}$ and then, together with the representation of the proximal subgradients, we obtain some relationships between the normal cones to the sublevel of $\mathcal{T}$ and the normal cones to its epigraph. The relationships allow us to get the propagation of the proximal subdifferential as well as of the proximal horizontal subdifferential of $\mathcal{T}$ along optimal trajectories. Final…
The paper is devoted to a comprehensive second-order study of a remarkable class of convex extended-real-valued functions that is highly important in many aspects of nonlinear and variational analysis, specifically those related to optimization and stability. This class consists of lower semicontinuous functions with possibly infinite values on finite-dimensional spaces, which are labeled as piecewise linear ones and can be equivalently described via the convexity of their epigraphs. In this the paper we calculate the second-order subdifferentials (generalized Hessians) of arbitrary convex pie…
The problem of minimizing the least squares functional with a Fréchet differentiable, lower semi-continuous, convex penalizer $J$ is considered to be solved. The penalizer maps the functions of Banach space $\mathcal{V}$ into $\mathbb{R}_{+},$ $ J : \mathcal{V} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}_{+}.$ It is assumed that some given data $f^δ$ is defined on a compact domain $\mathcal{G} \subset \mathbb{R}_{+}$ and in the class of Hilbert space, $f^δ \in \mathcal{L}^{2}(\mathcal{G}).$ Then general Tikhonov functional associated with some given linear, compact and injective forward operator $\mathcal{T} : \ma…
Extremal problems are studied involving an objective function with values in (order) complete lattices of sets generated by so called set relations. Contrary to the popular paradigm in vector optimization, the solution concept for such problems, introduced by F. Heyde and A. Löhne, comprises the attainment of the infimum as well as a minimality property. The main result is a Minty type variational inequality for set optimization problems which provides a sufficient optimality condition under lower semicontinuity assumptions and a necessary condition under appropriate generalized convexity assu…
Whereas in a coordinate-dependent setting the Euler-Lagrange equations establish necessary conditions for solving variational problems in which both the integrands of functionals and the resulting paths are assumed to be sufficiently smooth, uniqueness and global optimality are generally hard to prove in the absence of convexity conditions, and often times they may not even exist. This is also true for variational problems on Lie groups, with the Euler-Poincaré equation establishing necessary conditions. The difficulties compound when integrands and/or the optimal paths are not sufficiently re…
This paper exemplifies that saturation is an indispensable structure on measure spaces to obtain the existence and characterization of solutions to nonconvex variational problems with integral constraints in Banach spaces and their dual spaces. We provide a characterization of optimality via the maximum principle for the Hamiltonian and an existence result without the purification of relaxed controls, in which the Lyapunov convexity theorem in infinite dimensions under the saturation hypothesis on the underlying measure space plays a crucial role. We also demonstrate that the existence of solu…
We study dynamic minimization problems of the calculus of variations with generalized Lagrangian functionals that depend on a general linear operator $K$ and defined on bounded-time intervals. Under assumptions of regularity, convexity and coercivity, we derive sufficient conditions ensuring the existence of a minimizer. Finally, we obtain necessary optimality conditions of Euler-Lagrange type. Main results are illustrated with special cases, when $K$ is a general kernel operator and, in particular, with $K$ the fractional integral of Riemann-Liouville and Hadamard. The application of our resu…
The main goal of this paper is to apply the machinery of variational analysis and generalized differentiation to study infinite horizon stochastic dynamic programming (DP) with discrete time in the Banach space setting without convexity assumptions. Unlike to standard stochastic DP with stationary Markov processes, we investigate here stochastic DP in $L^p$ spaces to deal with nonstationary stochastic processes, which describe a more flexible learning procedure for the decision-maker. Our main concern is to calculate generalized subgradients of the corresponding value function and to derive ne…
We employ a fuzzy optimality condition for the Frechet subdifferential and some advanced techniques of variational analysis such as formulae for the subdifferentials of an infinite family of nonsmooth functions and the coderivative scalarization to investigate robust optimality condition and robust duality for a nonsmooth/nonconvex multiobjective optimization problem dealing with uncertain constraints in arbitrary Asplund spaces. We establish necessary optimality conditions for weakly and properly robust efficient solutions of the problem in terms of the Mordukhovich subdifferentials of the re…
This paper is concerned with six variational problems and their mutual connections: The quadratic Monge-Kantorovich optimal transport, the Schrödinger problem, Brenier's relaxed model for incompressible fluids, the so-called Brödinger problem recently introduced by M. Arnaudon & al. [3], the multiphase Brenier model, and the multiphase Brödinger problem. All of them involve the minimization of a kinetic action and/or a relative entropy of some path measures with respect to the reversible Brownian motion. As the viscosity parameter $ν\to 0$ we establish Gamma-convergence relations between the c…
We formulate bang-bang, purification, and minimization principles in dual Banach spaces with Gelfand integrals and provide a complete characterization of the saturation property of finite measure spaces. We also present a new application of the relaxation technique to large economies with infinite-dimensional commodity spaces, where the space of agents is modeled as a finite measure space. We propose a "relaxation" of large economies, which is regarded as a reasonable convexification of original economies. Under the saturation hypothesis, the relaxation and purification techniques enable us to…
We consider a misspecified optimization problem that requires minimizing a function f(x;q*) over a closed and convex set X where q* is an unknown vector of parameters that may be learnt by a parallel learning process. In this context, We examine the development of coupled schemes that generate iterates {x_k,q_k} as k goes to infinity, then {x_k} converges x*, a minimizer of f(x;q*) over X and {q_k} converges to q*. In the first part of the paper, we consider the solution of problems where f is either smooth or nonsmooth under various convexity assumptions on function f. In addition, rate state…
We consider a stochastic transportation problem between two prescribed probability distributions (a source and a target) over processes with general drift dependence and with free end times. First, and in order to establish a dual principle, we associate two equivalent formulations of the primal problem in order to guarantee its convexity and lower semi-continuity with respect to the source and target distributions. We exhibit an equivalent Eulerian formulation, whose dual variational principle is given by Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman type variational inequalities. In the case where the dependence …
Non-locality is being intensively studied in various PDE-contexts and in variational problems. The numerical approximation also looks challenging, as well as the application of these models to Continuum Mechanics and Image Analysis, among other areas. Even though there is a growing body of deep and fundamental knowledge about non-locality, for variational principles there are still very basic questions that have not been addressed so far. Taking some of these as a motivation, we describe a general perspective on distinct classes of non-local variational principles setting a program for the ana…

We propose a new class of convex penalty functions, called \emph{variational Gram functions} (VGFs), that can promote pairwise relations, such as orthogonality, among a set of vectors in a vector space. These functions can serve as regularizers in convex optimization problems arising from hierarchical classification, multitask learning, and estimating vectors with disjoint supports, among other applications. We study convexity for VGFs, and give efficient characterizations for their convex conjugates, subdifferentials, and proximal operators. We discuss efficient optimization algorithms for re…
