We study the time optimal control problem for differential inclusions with a general closed target. We first give the representation of the proximal horizontal subgradients of the minimum time function $\mathcal{T}$ and then, together with the representation of the proximal subgradients, we obtain some relationships between the normal cones to the sublevel of $\mathcal{T}$ and the normal cones to its epigraph. The relationships allow us to get the propagation of the proximal subdifferential as well as of the proximal horizontal subdifferential of $\mathcal{T}$ along optimal trajectories. Finally, we show, under suitable assumptions, that the epigraph of $\mathcal{T}$ is $φ$-convex near the target. This is the first nonlinear $φ$-convexity result valid in any dimension.
This paper studies the regularity of the minimum time function, $T(\cdot)$, for a control system with a general closed target, taking the state equation in the form of a differential inclusion. Our first result is a sensitivity relation which guarantees the propagation of the proximal subdifferential of $T$ along any optimal trajectory. Then, we obtain the local $C^2$ regularity of the minimum time function along optimal trajectories by using such a relation to exclude the presence of conjugate times.
We consider the well-known following shape optimization problem: $$λ_1(Ω^*)=\min_{\stackrel{|Ω|=a} {Ω\subset{D}}} λ_1(Ω), $$ where $λ_1$ denotes the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, and $D$ is an open bounded set (a box). It is well-known that the solution of this problem is the ball of volume $a$ if such a ball exists in the box $D$ (Faber-Krahn's theorem). In this paper, we prove regularity properties of the boundary of the optimal shapes $Ω^*$ in any case and in any dimension. Full regularity is obtained in dimension 2.
We study the time optimal control problem with a general target $\mathcal S$ for a class of differential inclusions that satisfy mild smoothness and controllability assumptions. In particular, we do not require Petrov's condition at the boundary of $\mathcal S$. Consequently, the minimum time function $T(\cdot)$ fails to be locally Lipschitz---never mind semiconcave---near $\mathcal S$. Instead of such a regularity, we use an exterior sphere condition for the hypograph of $T(\cdot)$ to develop the analysis. In this way, we obtain dual arc inclusions which we apply to show the constancy of the …
The regularity theory for variational inequalities over polyhedral sets developed in a series of papers by Robinson, Ralph and Dontchev-Rockafellar in the 90s has long become classics of variational analysis. But in the available proofs of almost all main results, fairly nontrivial as they are, techniques of variational analysis do not play a significant part. In the paper we develop a new approach that allows to obtain some generalizations of the the mentioned results without invoking anything beyond elementary geometry of convex polyhedra and some basic facts of the theory of metric regulari…
This paper concerns state constrained optimal control problems, in which the dynamic constraint takes the form of a differential inclusion. If the differential inclusion does not depend on time, then the Hamiltonian, evaluated along the optimal state trajectory and the co-state trajectory, is independent of time. If the differential inclusion is Lipschitz continuous, then the Hamitonian, evaluated along the optimal state trajectory and the co-state trajectory, is Lipschitz continuous. These two well-known results are examples of the following principle: the Hamiltonian, evaluated along the opt…
We obtain regularity conditions of a new type of problems of the calculus of variations with second-order derivatives. As a corollary, we get non-occurrence of the Lavrentiev phenomenon. Our main result asserts that autonomous integral functionals of the calculus of variations with a Lagrangian having superlinearity partial derivatives with respect to the higher-order derivatives admit only minimizers with essentially bounded derivatives.
Viscosity Iterative algorithm for solving Variational Inclusion and Fixed point problems involving Multivalued Quasi-Nonexpansive and Demicontractive Operators in real Hilbert Space
We investigate variational problems with recursive integral functionals governed by infinite-dimensional differential inclusions with an infinite horizon and present an existence result in the setting of nonreflexive Banach spaces. We find an optimal solution in a Sobolev space taking values in a Banach space under the Cesari type condition. We also investigate sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions to the initial value problem for the differential inclusion.
The minimum time function $T(\cdot)$ of smooth control systems is known to be locally semiconcave provided Petrov's controllability condition is satisfied. Moreover, such a regularity holds up to the boundary of the target under an inner ball assumption. We generalize this analysis to differential inclusions, replacing the above hypotheses with the continuity of $T(\cdot)$ near the target, and an inner ball property for the multifunction associated with the dynamics. In such a weakened set-up, we prove that the hypograph of $T(\cdot)$ satisfies, locally, an exterior sphere condition. As is wel…
Existence and regularity of minimizers for a geometric variational problem is shown. The variational integral models an energy contribution of the interface between two immiscible fluids in the presence of surfactants and includes a Helfrich type contribution, a Frank type contribution and a coupling term between the orientation of the surfactants and the curvature of the interface. Analytical results are proven in a one--dimensional situation for curves.
The paper is mainly devoted to systematic developments and applications of geometric aspects of second-order variational analysis that are revolved around the concept of parabolic regularity of sets. This concept has been known in variational analysis for more than two decades while being largely underinvestigated. We discover here that parabolic regularity is the key to derive new calculus rules and computation formulas for major second-order generalized differential constructions of variational analysis in connection with some properties of sets that go back to classical differential geometr…
In this article we show the crucial role of elliptic regularity theory for the development of efficient numerical methods for the solution of some variational problems. Here we focus to a class of elliptic multiobjective optimal control problems that can be formulated as jointly convex generalized Nash equilibrium problems and to nonsmooth boundary value problems that stem from contact mechanics leading to elliptic variational inequalities.
The aim of this survey is to present the main important techniques and tools from variational analysis used for first and second order dynamical systems of implicit type for solving monotone inclusions and non-smooth optimization problems. The differential equations are expressed by means of the resolvent (in case of a maximally monotone set valued operator) or the proximal operator for non-smooth functions. The asymptotic analysis of the trajectories generated relies on Lyapunov theory, where the appropriate energy functional plays a decisive role. While the most part of the paper is related …
Understanding the role that subgradients play in various second-order variational analysis constructions can help us uncover new properties of important classes of functions in variational analysis. Focusing mainly on the behavior of the second subderivative and subgradient proto-derivative of polyhedral functions, functions with polyhedral epigraphs, we demonstrate that choosing the underlying subgradient, utilized in the definitions of these concepts, from the relative interior of the subdifferential of polyhedral functions ensures stronger second-order variational properties such as strict …
Variational relation problems allow a general approach for variational inequalities, equilibrium problems, optimization problems, variational inclusions. In this paper we consider a system of quasi-variational relations and determine some conditions in which the solvability of the independent problems imply the existence of a solution for the system. We particularize then the result for a system of variational inequalities and for a constrained Nash equilibrium problem.
In this paper, we propose necessary and sufficient conditions for a scalar function to be nonincreasing along solutions to general differential inclusions with state constraints. The problem of determining if a function is nonincreasing appears in the study of stability and safety, typically using Lyapunov and barrier functions, respectively. The results in this paper present infinitesimal conditions that do not require any knowledge about the solutions to the system. Results under different regularity properties of the considered scalar function are provided. This includes when the scalar fun…

We leverage the connections between nonexpansive maps, monotone Lipschitz operators, and proximal mappings to obtain near-optimal (i.e., optimal up to poly-log factors in terms of iteration complexity) and parameter-free methods for solving monotone inclusion problems. These results immediately translate into near-optimal guarantees for approximating strong solutions to variational inequality problems, approximating convex-concave min-max optimization problems, and minimizing the norm of the gradient in min-max optimization problems. Our analysis is based on a novel and simple potential-based …
Although the property of strong metric subregularity of set-valued mappings has been present in the literature under various names and with various definitions for more than two decades, it has attracted much less attention than its older "siblings", the metric regularity and the strong metric regularity. The purpose of this paper is to show that the strong metric subregularity shares the main features of these two most popular regularity properties and is not less instrumental in applications. We show that the strong metric subregularity of a mapping F acting between metric spaces is stable u…
In this paper we aim to present two general results regarding, on one hand, the openness stability of set-valued maps and, on the other hand, the metric regularity behavior of the implicit multifunction related to a generalized variational system. Then, these results are applied in order to obtain, in a natural way, and in a widely studied case, several relations between the metric regularity moduli of the field maps defining the variational system and the solution map. Our approach allows us to complete and extend several very recent results in literature.
We present a way to study a wide class of optimal design problems with a perimeter penalization. More precisely, we address existence and regularity properties of saddle points of energies of the form $$ (u,A) \quad \mapsto \quad \int_Ω2fu \; \text{d}x \; - \int_{Ω\cap A} σ_1 \mathscr A u \cdot \mathscr A u \; \text{d}x \; - \int_{Ω\setminus A} σ_2\mathscr A u\cdot \mathscr A u \; \text{d}x \; + \; \text{Per}(A;\overline Ω),$$ where $Ω$ is a bounded Lipschitz domain, $A\subset \mathbb R^N$ is a Borel set, $u:Ω\subset \mathbb R^N \to \mathbb R^d$, $\mathscr A$ is an operator of gradient form, a…
We consider variational Mean Field Games endowed with a constraint on the maximal density of the distribution of players. Minimizers of the variational formulation are equilibria for a game where both the running cost and the final cost of each player is augmented by a pressure effect, i.e. a positive cost concentrated on the set where the density saturates the constraint. Yet, this pressure is a priori only a measure and regularity is needed to give a precise meaning to its integral on trajectories. We improve, in the limited case where the Hamiltonian is quadratic, which allows to use optima…
We study a class of variational problems involving both bulk and interface energies. The bulk energy is of Dirichlet type albeit of very general form allowing the dependence from the unknown variable $u$ and the position $x$. We employ the regularity theory of $Λ$-minimizers to study the regularity of the free interface. The hallmark of the paper is the mild regularity assumption concerning the dependence of the coefficients with respect to $x$ and $u$ that is of Hölder type.
