Local solutions for variational and quasi-variational inequalities are usually the best type of solutions that could practically be obtained when in case of lack of convexity or else when available numerical techniques are too limited for global solutions. Nevertheless, the analysis of such problems found in the literature seems to be very restricted to the global treatment. Motivated by this fact, in this work, we propose local solution concepts, study their interrelations and relations with global concepts and prove existence results as well as stability of local solution map of parametric variational inequalities. The key ingredient of our results is the new concept of local reproducibility of a set-valued map, which we introduce to explore such local solutions to quasi-variational inequality problems. As a by-product, we obtain local solutions to quasi-optimization problems, bilevel quasi-optimization problems and Single-Leader-Multi-Follower games.
We study nested variational inequalities, which are variational inequalities whose feasible set is the solution set of another variational inequality. We present a projected averaging Tikhonov algorithm requiring the weakest conditions in the literature to guarantee the convergence to solutions of the nested variational inequality. Specifically, we only need monotonicity of the upper- and the lower-level variational inequalities. Also, we provide the first complexity analysis for nested variational inequalities considering optimality of both the upper- and lower-level.
An adaptive proximal method for a special class of variational inequalities and related problems is proposed. For example, the so-called mixed variational inequalities and composite saddle problems are considered. Some estimates of the necessary number of iterations are obtained to achieve a given quality of the solution.
An adaptive analogue of the Yu. E. Nesterov method for variational inequalities with a strongly monotone operator is proposed. Some estimates are obtained for the parameters determining the quality of the solution of the variational inequality depending on the number of iterations.
Basing on some recently proposed methods for solving variational inequalities with non-smooth operators, we propose an analogue of the Mirror Prox method for the corresponding class of problems under the assumption of relative smoothness and relative strong monotonicity of the operator.
A new adaptive approach is proposed for variational inequalities with a Lipschitz-continuous field. Estimates of the necessary number of iterations are obtained to achieve a given quality of the variational inequality solution. A generalization of the method under consideration to the case of a Holder-continuous field is considered.
The paper starts with a concise description of the recently developed semismooth* Newton method for the solution of general inclusions. This method is then applied to a class of variational inequalities of the second kind. As a result, one obtains an implementable algorithm exhibiting a local superlinear convergence. Thereafter we suggest several globally convergent hybrid algorithms in which one combines the semismooth* Newton method with selected splitting algorithms for the solution of monotone variational inequalities. Their efficiency is documented by extensive numerical experiments.
This paper is devoted to present new error bounds of regularized gap functions for polynomial variational inequalities with exponents explicitly determined by the dimension of the underlying space and the number/degree of the involved polynomials. The developed techniques are largely based on variational analysis and semialgebraic geometry, which allow us to establish a nonsmooth extension of the seminal Łojasiewicz's gradient inequality to regularized gap functions with explicitly calculated exponents.
In this paper we propose a general algorithmic framework for first-order methods in optimization in a broad sense, including minimization problems, saddle-point problems and variational inequalities. This framework allows to obtain many known methods as a special case, the list including accelerated gradient method, composite optimization methods, level-set methods, proximal methods. The idea of the framework is based on constructing an inexact model of the main problem component, i.e. objective function in optimization or operator in variational inequalities. Besides reproducing known results…
The article is devoted to the development of numerical methods for solving variational inequalities with relatively strongly monotone operators. We consider two classes of variational inequalities related to some analogs of the Lipschitz condition of the operator that appeared several years ago. One of these classes is associated with the relative boundedness of the operator, and the other one with the analog of the Lipschitz condition (namely, relative smoothness). For variational inequalities with relatively bounded and relatively strongly monotone operators, we introduce a modification of t…
Weak convergence of inertial iterative method for solving variational inequalities is the focus of this paper. The cost function is assumed to be non-Lipschitz and monotone. We propose a projection-type method with inertial terms and give weak convergence analysis under appropriate conditions. Some test results are performed and compared with relevant methods in the literature to show the efficiency and advantages given by our proposed methods.
We present a new Progressive Hedging Algorithm to solve Stochastic Variational Inequalities in the formulation introduced by Rockafellar and Wets in 2017, allowing the generated subproblems to be approximately solved with an implementable tolerance condition. Our scheme is based on Inexact Proximal Point methods and generalizes the exact algorithm developed by Rockafellar and Sun in 2019, providing stronger convergence results. We also show some numerical experiments in two-stage Nash games.
The paper starts with a description of the SCD (subspace containing derivative) mappings and the SCD semismooth* Newton method for the solution of general inclusions. This method is then applied to a class of variational inequalities of the second kind. As a result, one obtains an implementable algorithm exhibiting a locally superlinear convergence. Thereafter we suggest several globally convergent hybrid algorithms in which one combines the SCD semismooth* Newton method with selected splitting algorithms for the solution of monotone variational inequalities. Finally we demonstrate the efficie…
Tseng's forward-backward-forward algorithm is a valuable alternative for Korpelevich's extragradient method when solving variational inequalities over a convex and closed set governed by monotone and Lipschitz continuous operators, as it requires in every step only one projection operation. However, it is well-known that Korpelevich's method converges and can therefore be used also for solving variational inequalities governed by pseudo-monotone and Lipschitz continuous operators. In this paper, we first associate to a pseudo-monotone variational inequality a forward-backward-forward dynamical…
In this paper, we investigate several properties of the solution maps of variational inequalities with polynomial data. First, we prove some facts on the $R_0$-property, the local boundedness, and the upper semicontinuity of the solution maps. Second, we establish results on the solution existence and the local upper-Hölder stability under the copositivity condition. Third, when the constraint set is semi-algebraic, we discuss the genericity of the $R_0$-property and the finite-valuedness of the solution maps.
In this paper, we generalize the classical extragradient algorithm for solving variational inequality problems by utilizing nonzero normal vectors of the feasible set. In particular, conceptual algorithms are proposed with two different linesearchs. We then establish convergence results for these algorithms under mild assumptions. Our study suggests that nonzero normal vectors may significantly improve convergence if chosen appropriately.
In this paper, we investigate optimal control problems governed by semilinear elliptic variational inequalities involving constraints on the state, and more precisely the obstacle problem. Since we adopt a numerical point of view, we first relax the feasible domain of the problem, then using both mathematical programming methods and penalization methods we get optimality conditions with smooth Lagrange multipliers. Some numerical experiments using IPOPT algorithm are presented to verify the efficiency of our approach.
In this paper, what we concern about is the weakly homogeneous variational inequality over a finite dimensional real Hilbert space. We achieve an existence result {under} copositivity of leading term of the involved map, norm-coercivity of the natural map and several additional conditions. These conditions we used are easier to check and cross each other with those utilized in the main result established by Gowda and Sossa (Math Program 177:149-171, 2019). As a corollary, we obtain a result on the solvability of nonlinear equations with weakly homogeneous maps involved. Our result enriches the…

Some adaptive analogue of the Mirror Prox method for variational inequalities is proposed. In this work we consider the adaptation not only to the value of the Lipschitz constant, but also to the magnitude of the oracle error. This approach, in particular, allows us to prove a complexity near $O\left(\frac{1}{\varepsilon}\log_2\frac{1}{\varepsilon}\right)$ for variational inequalities for a special class of monotone bounded operators. This estimate is optimal for variational inequalities with monotone Lipschitz-continuous operators. However, there exists some error, which may be insignificant.…
This paper continues earlier work and is concerned with the inverse problem of parameter identification in variational inequalities of the second kind that does not only treat the parameter linked to a bilinear form, but importantly also the parameter linked to a nonlinear non-smooth function. The optimization approach in the earlier work on the inverse problem using the output-least squares formulation involves the variational inequality of the second kind as constraint. Here we use regularization technics of nondifferentiable optimization, regularize the nonsmooth part in the variational ine…
We consider a quasi-variational inequality governed by a moving set. We employ the assumption that the movement of the set has a small Lipschitz constant. Under this requirement, we show that the quasi-variational inequality has a unique solution which depends Lipschitz-continuously on the source term. If the data of the problem is (directionally) differentiable, the solution map is directionally differentiable as well. We also study the optimal control of the quasi-variational inequality and provide necessary optimality conditions of strongly stationary type.
In this paper, we consider interval-valued vector optimization problems $(IVOP)$ and derive their relationships to interval vector variational inequalities $(IVVI)$ of Minty and Stampacchia type in terms of convexificators and LU-efficient solution of $(IVOP)$ using LU-convexity assumption. Furthermore, we consider weak versions of $(IVVI)$ of Minty and Stampacchia type and find the relationships between weak versions of $(IVVI)$ of Minty and Stampacchia type and weakly LU-efficient solution of $(IVOP)$. The results presented in this paper extend and generalized some existing results in the li…
In this paper, we introduce an inertial Tseng's extragradient method for solving multi-valued variational inequalits, in which only one projection is needed at each iterate. We also obtain the strong convergence results of the proposed algorithm, provided that the multi-valued mapping is continuous and pseudomonotone with nonempty compact convex values. Moreover, numerical simulation results illustrate the efficiency of our method when compared to existing methods.
