X-ray photoelectron emission microscopy in combination with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism is used to investigate the influence of an applied magnetic field on Néel caps (i.e., surface terminations of asymmetric Bloch walls). Self-assembled micron-sized Fe(110) dots displaying a moderate distribution of size and aspect ratios serve as model objects. Investigations of remanent states after application of an applied field along the direction of Néel-cap magnetization give clear evidence for the magnetization reversal of the Néel caps around 120 mT, with a $\pm$20 mT dispersion. No clear correlation could be found between the value of the reversal field and geometrical features of the dots.
The half-metallic Heusler compound Co$_2$MnSi is a very attractive material for spintronic devices because it exhibits very high tunnelling magnetoresistance ratios. This work reports on a spectroscopic investigation of thin Co$_2$MnSi films as they are used as electrodes in magnetic tunnel junctions. The investigated films exhibit a remanent in-plane magnetisation with a magnetic moment of about 5~$μ_B$ when saturated, as expected. The low coercive field of only 4~mT indicates soft magnetic behaviour. Magnetic dichroism in emission and absorption was measured at the Co and Mn $2p$ core levels…

We performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of bulk 2H-WSe$_2$ for different crystal orientations linked to each other by time-reversal symmetry. We introduce a new observable called time-reversal dichroism in photoelectron angular distributions (TRDAD), which quantifies the modulation of the photoemission intensity upon effective time-reversal operation. We demonstrate that the hidden orbital pseudospin texture leaves its imprint onto TRDAD, due to multiple orbitals interference effects in photoemission. Our experimental results are in quantitative agreement with both tight…
We have investigated the effect of imperfect circular polarization on the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy signal, using graphene as a prototypical system that can be understood within tight-binding formalism. We found that perfect left- and right-circularly polarized lights give the same photoelectron intensity distribution around a constant energy contour of the graphene $π$ band. On the other hand, upon breaking the purity of the polarization, photoelectron intensity starts to show circular dichroism, which is enhanced with further increasing the imperfection. Our results predict t…
Using circularly polarised radiation and a combination of bulk-sensitive hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray-absorption spectroscopy (XAS) we studied the electronic and magnetic structure of epitaxial Mn$_{1.8}$Co$_{1.2}$Ga thin films. Spin resolved Bloch spectral functions, density of states as well as charge and magnetisation densities were investigated by a first-principles analysis of full potential, fully relativistic Korringa--Kohn--Rostoker calculations of the electronic structure. The valence states were experimentally investigated by using linear dichroism in the angular d…
Electronic structure and symmetry of valence states of epitaxial NiTiSn and NiZr$_{0.5}$Hf$_{0.5}$Sn thin films by hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
Observing signatures of light-induced Floquet topological states in materials has been shown to be very challenging. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is well suited for the investigation of Floquet physics, as it allows to directly probe the dressed electronic states of driven solids. Depending on the system, scattering and decoherence can play an important role, hampering the emergence of Floquet states. Another challenge is to disentangle Floquet side bands from laser-assisted photoemission (LAPE), since both lead to similar signatures in ARPES spectra. Here, we investigate …
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is the most powerful technique to investigate the electronic band structure of crystalline solids. To completely characterize the electronic structure of topological materials, one needs to go beyond band structure mapping and access information about the momentum-resolved Bloch wavefunction, namely orbitals, Berry curvature, and topological invariants. However, because phase information is lost in the process of measuring photoemission intensities, retrieving the complex-valued Bloch wavefunction from photoemission data has yet remained elusiv…
The spin and orbital magnetic moments of the Fe3O4 epitaxial ultrathin film synthesized by plasma assisted simultaneous oxidization on MgO(100) have been studied with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The ultrathin film retains a rather large total magnetic moment, i.e. (2.7+-0.15) uB/f.u., which is ~ 70% of that for the bulk-like Fe3O4. A significant unquenched orbital moment up to (0.54+-0.05) uB/f.u. was observed, which could come from the symmetry breaking at the Fe3O4/MgO interface. Such sizable orbital moment will add capacities to the Fe3O4-based spintronics devices in the magne…
Interdiffusion phenomena between adjacent materials are highly prevalent in semiconductor device architectures and can present a major reliability challenge for the industry. To fully capture and better understand these phenomena, experimental approaches must go beyond static and post-mortem studies to include in-situ and in-operando setups. Here, soft and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SXPS and HAXPES) is used to monitor diffusion in real-time across a proxy device. The device consists of a Si/SiO\textsubscript{2}/Ti$_x$W$_{1-x}$(300 nm)/Cu(25 nm) thin film material stack, with the Ti…
X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy using an X-ray free electron laser is demonstrated with spectra over the Fe L$_{3,2}$-edges. This new ultrafast time-resolved capability is then applied to a fluence-dependent study of all-optical magnetic switching dynamics of Fe and Gd magnetic sublattices in a GdFeCo thin film above its magnetization compensation temperature. At the magnetic switching fuence, we corroborate the existence of a transient ferromagnetic-like state. The timescales of the dynamics, however, are longer than previously observed below the magnetization compensation temp…
Experiments of time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (Tr-XMCD) and resonant x-ray scattering at a beamline BL07LSU in SPring-8 with a time-resolution of under 50 ps are presented. A micro-channel plate is utilized for the Tr-XMCD measurements at nearly normal incidence both in the partial electron and total fluorescence yield (PEY and TFY) modes at the L2,3 absorption edges of the 3d transition-metals in the soft x-ray region. The ultrafast photo-induced demagnetization within 50 ps is observed on the dynamics of a magnetic material of FePt thin film, having a distinct threshold of t…
V-doped (Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ has a ten times higher magnetic coercivity than its Cr-doped counterpart and therefore is believed to be a superior system for the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE). The QAHE requires the opening of a magnetic band gap at the Dirac point. We do not find this gap by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy down to 1 K. By x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) we directly probe the magnetism at the V site and in zerofield. Hysteresis curves of the XMCD signal show a strong dependence of the coercivity on the ramping velocity of the magnetic field. The XMCD signal…
We report a novel mechanism, consisting of redistribution of valence electrons near the Fermi level, during interactions of intense femtosecond X-ray pulses with a Co/Pd multilayer. The changes in Co 3d valence shell occupation were directly revealed by fluence-dependent changes of the Co L$_3$ X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra near the excitation threshold. The valence shell redistribution arises from inelastic scattering of high energy Auger electrons and photoelectrons that lead to transient holes below and electrons above the Fermi level on the femtosecond time scale…
Near Ambient Pressure Scanning Photoelectron Microscopy adds to the widely used photoemission spectroscopy and its chemically selective capability two key features: (i) the possibility to chemically analyse samples in a more realistic environmental, gas pressure condition, and (ii) the capability to investigate a system at the relevant spatial scale. To achieve these goals the approach developed at the ESCA Microscopy beamline at the Elettra Synchrotron facility combines the submicron lateral resolution of a Scanning Photoelectron Microscope with a custom designed Near Ambient Pressure Cell wh…
Ferrimagnetic alloys are extensively studied for their unique magnetic properties leading to possible applications in perpendicular magnetic recording, due to their deterministic ultrafast switching and heat assisted magnetic recording capabilities. On a prototype ferrimagnetic alloy we demonstrate fascinating properties that occur close to a critical temperature where the magnetization is vanishing, just as in an antiferromagnet. From the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements, an anomalous 'wing shape' hysteresis loop is observed slightly above the compensation temperature. This bear…
Photoelectron emission microscopy PEEM is a powerful tool to spectroscopically image dynamic surface processes at the nanoscale but is traditionally limited to ultra high or moderate vacuum conditions. Here, we develop a novel grapheme capped multichannel array sample platform that extends the capabilities of photoelectron spectromicroscopy to routine liquid and atmospheric pressure studies with standard PEEM setups. Using this platform, we show that graphene has only a minor influence on the electronic structure of water in the first few layers and thus will allow for the examination of minim…

Chirality in condensed matter is now a topic of the utmost importance because of its significant role in the understanding and mastering of a large variety of new fundamental physicals mechanisms. Versatile experimental approaches, capable to reveal easily the exact winding of order parameters are therefore essential. Here we report X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) as a straightforward tool to identify directly the properties of chiral magnetic systems. We show that it can straight-forwardly and unambiguously determine the main characteristics of chiral magnetic distributions: i.e. it…
