To explain the acceleration of the cosmological expansion researchers have considered an unusual form of mass-energy generically called dark energy. Dark energy has a ratio of pressure over mass density which obeys $w=p/ρ<-1/3$. This form of mass-energy leads to accelerated expansion. An extreme form of dark energy, called phantom energy, has been proposed which has $w=p/ρ<-1$. This possibility is favored by the observational data. The simplest model for phantom energy involves the introduction of a scalar field with a negative kinetic energy term. Here we show that theories based on graded Lie algebras naturally have such a negative kinetic energy and thus give a model for phantom energy in a less ad hoc manner. We find that the model also contains ordinary scalar fields and anti-commuting (Grassmann) vector fields which act as a form of two component dark matter. Thus from a gauge theory based on a graded algebra we naturally obtained both phantom energy and dark matter.
I discuss the dark energy characterized by the violation of the null energy condition ($\varrho + p \geq 0$), dubbed phantom. Amazingly, it is admitted by the current astronomical data from supernovae. We discuss both classical and quantum cosmological models with phantom as a source of matter and present the phenomenon called phantom duality.
We construct a model of phantom energy using the graded Lie algebra SU(2/1). The negative kinetic energy of the phantom field emerges naturally from the graded Lie algebra, resulting in an equation of state with w<-1. The model also contains ordinary scalar fields and anti-commuting (Grassmann) vector fields which can be taken as two component dark matter. A potential term is generated for both the phantom fields and the ordinary scalar fields via a postulated condensate of the Grassmann vector fields. Since the phantom energy and dark matter arise from the same Lagrangian the phantom energy a…
Phantom cosmology allows to account for dynamics and matter content of the universe tracing back the evolution to the inflationary epoch, considering the transition to the non-phantom standard cosmology (radiation/matter dominated eras) and recovering the today observed dark energy epoch. We develop the unified phantom cosmology where the same scalar plays the role of early time (phantom) inflaton and late-time Dark Energy. The recent transition from decelerating to accelerating phase is described too by the same scalar field. The (dark) matter may be embedded in this scheme, giving the natura…
We investigate several varying-mass dark-matter particle models in the framework of phantom cosmology. We examine whether there exist late-time cosmological solutions, corresponding to an accelerating universe and possessing dark energy and dark matter densities of the same order. Imposing exponential or power-law potentials and exponential or power-law mass dependence, we conclude that the coincidence problem cannot be solved or even alleviated. Thus, if dark energy is attributed to the phantom paradigm, varying-mass dark matter models cannot fulfill the basic requirement that led to their co…
The $Λ$CDM model is a remarkably successful model which is consistent with the observations of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB), baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), and large scale structure of the Universe. However, the discrepancy in the value of $H_0$ between the local observations and PLANCK observation of CMB was recently pointed out. One of the way to ease the discrepancy is to introduce phantom dark energy instead of the cosmological constant. While, phantom dark energy often suffer from the instabilities. We will investigate the general solution to overcome the difficulty of …
We analyse the emergent cosmological dynamics corresponding to the mean field hydrodynamics of quantum gravity condensates, in the tensorial group field theory formalism. We focus in particular on the cosmological effects of fundamental interactions, and on the contributions from different quantum geometric modes. The general consequence of such interactions is to produce an accelerated expansion of the universe, which can happen both at early times, after the quantum bounce predicted by the model, and at late times. Our main result is that, while this fails to give a compelling inflationary s…
The solution of dark energy problem in the models without scalars is presented. It is shown that late-time accelerating cosmology may be generated by the ideal fluid with some implicit equation of state. The universe evolution within modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity is considered. It is demonstrated that such gravitational approach may predict the (quintessential, cosmological constant or transient phantom) acceleration of the late-time universe with natural transiton from deceleration to acceleration (or from non-phantom to phantom era in the last case).
I present a model in which dark energy interacts with matter. The former is represented by a variable equation of state. It is shown that the phantom crossing takes place at zero redshift, moreover, stable scaling solution of the Friedmann equations is obtained. I show that dark energy is most probably be either generalized phantom energy or the generalized Chaplygin gas.
We consider ideal fluid and equivalent scalar field dark energy universes where all four known types of finite-time, future singularities occur at some parameter values. It is demonstrated that pressure/energy density of such quintessence/phantom dark energy diverges in spherically-symmetric spacetime at finite radius or at the center. This may cause the instability of the relativistic star or black hole in such universe. The resolution of the problem via the extra modification of the equation of state is briefly discussed.
The unifying approach to early-time and late-time universe based on phantom cosmology is proposed. We consider gravity-scalar system which contains usual potential and scalar coupling function in front of kinetic term. As a result, the possibility of phantom-non-phantom transition appears in such a way that universe could have effectively phantom equation of state at early time as well as at late time. In fact, the oscillating universe may have several phantom and non-phantom phases. As a second model we suggest generalized holographic dark energy where infrared cutoff is identified with combi…
We aim at the construction of dark energy models without exotic matter but with a phantom-like equation of state (an effective phantom phase). The first model we consider is decaying vacuum cosmology where the fluctuations of the vacuum are taken into account. In this case, the phantom cosmology (with an effective, observational $ω$ being less than -1) emerges even for the case of a real dark energy with a physical equation of state parameter $ω$ larger than -1. The second proposal is a generalized holographic model, which is produced by the presence of an infrared cutoff. It also leads to an …
We present a novel dark energy candidate, based upon the existence and dynamics of Ghost D-branes in a warped compactification of type IIB string theory. Gp-branes cancel the combined BPS sectors of the Dp-branes, while they preserve the same supersymmetries. We show that this scenario can naturally lead to either quintessence or phantom-like behaviors, depending on the form of the involved potentials and brane tension.
A model of phantom scalar field dark energy under exponential potential coupling to barotropic dark matter fluid in loop quantum cosmology is addressed here. We derive a closed-autonomous system for cosmological dynamics in this scenario. The expansion in loop quantum universe has a bounce even in presence of the phantom field. The greater decaying from dark matter to dark phantom energy results in greater energy storing in the phantom field. This results in further turning point of the field. Greater coupling also delays bouncing time. In the case of phantom decaying, oscillation in phantom d…
We study the behavior of metric perturbations in a recently proposed model of phantom dark energy with tachyonic instability at long wavelengths. We find that metric perturbations exponentially grow in time, starting from very small values determined by vacuum fluctuations, and may become sizeable at late times. This property may be of interest for phenomenology.
Here, it is found that dark energy and dark matter emerge from the gravitational sector, if non-linear term of scalar curvature is added to Einstein-Hilbert lagrangian. An equation of state for dark energy, having the form $p_{\rm de} = - ρ_{\rm de} + f(a) (with $p_{\rm de}(ρ_{\rm de})$ being the pressure(density) for dark energy, $f(a)$ being a function of scale feactor $a(t)$ and $t$ being the cosmic time) is explored. Interestingly, this equation of state leads to a phantom barrier ${\rm w}_{\rm de} = p_{\rm de}/ρ_{\rm de} = - 1$ at $a = a_{\rm w}$. It is found that when $a < a_{\rm w}, {\r…
A class of braneworld models can lead to phantom-like acceleration of the late universe, but without the need for any phantom matter. In the simplest models, the universe contains only cold dark matter and a cosmological constant. We generalize these models by introducing a quintessence field. The new feature in our models is that quintessence leads to a crossing of the phantom divide, $w=-1$. This is a purely gravitational effect, and there is no phantom instability. Furthermore, the Hubble parameter is always decreasing, and there is no big rip singularity in the future.
We study a cosmological model in which phantom dark energy is coupled to dark matter by phenomenologically introducing a coupled term to the equations of motion of dark energy and dark matter. This term is parameterized by a dimensionless coupling function $δ$, Hubble parameter and the energy density of dark matter, and it describes an energy flow between the dark energy and dark matter. We discuss two cases: one is the case where the equation-of-state $ω_e$ of the dark energy is a constant; the other is that the dimensionless coupling function $δ$ is a constant. We investigate the effect of t…
Phantom dark energy models, with w < -1, are characterized by a future singularity and therefore a finite lifetime for the universe. Because the future singularity is triggered by the onset of dark-energy domination, the universe spends a significant fraction of its total lifetime in a state for which the dark energy and matter densities are roughly comparable. We calculate, as a function of w, the fraction of the total lifetime of the universe for which the dark energy and matter densities differ by less than the ratio r_0 in either direction. For r_0 = 10, this fraction varies from 1/3 to 1/…
A class of dynamical dark energy models is constructed through an extended version of fermion fields corresponding to phantom dark ghost spinors, which are spin one half with mass dimension one. We find that if these spinors interact with torsion fields in a homogeneous and isotropic universe, then it does not imply any future dark energy singularity or any abrupt event, though the fermion has a negative kinetic energy. In fact, the equation of state of this dark energy model will asymptotically approach the value $w=-1$ from above without crossing the phantom divide and inducing therefore a d…
In this paper we consider the holographic model of interacting dark energy in non-flat universe. With the choice of $c\leq 0.84$, the interacting holographic dark energy can be described by a phantom scalar field. Then we show this phantomic description of the holographic dark energy with $c\leq 0.84$ and reconstruct the potential of the phantom scalar field.
We consider late-time cosmology in a (phantom) scalar-tensor theory with an exponential potential, as a dark energy model with equation of state parameter close to -1 (a bit above or below this value). Scalar (and also other kinds of) matter can be easily taken into account. An exact spatially-flat FRW cosmology is constructed for such theory, which admits (eternal or transient) acceleration phases for the current universe, in correspondence with observational results. Some remarks on the possible origin of the phantom, starting from a more fundamental theory, are also made. It is shown that q…
Gravitational collapse of a shell of charged dust surrounded by the phantom dark energy is probed by the minimal area surface, which is dual to probe the thermalization in the boundary quantum field by expectation values of Wilson loop in the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We investigated mainly the effect of the phantom dark energy parameter and chemical potential on the thermalization. The result shows that the smaller the phantom dark energy parameter is, the easier the plasma thermalizes as the chemical potential is fixed, and the larger the chemical potential is, the harder the …
Recently a lot of attention has been given to building dark energy models in which the equation-of-state parameter $w$ can cross the phantom divide $w=-1$. However, to our knowledge, these models with crossing the phantom divide only provide the possibility that $w$ can cross -1. They do not answer another question: {\em why crossing phantom divide occurs recently?} Since in many existing models whose equation-of-state parameter can cross the phantom divide, $w$ undulates around -1 randomly, {\em why are we living in an epoch $w<-1$?} This can be regarded as the second cosmological coincidence…
We perform a detailed phase-space analysis of various phantom cosmological models, where the dark energy sector interacts with the dark matter one. We examine whether there exist late-time scaling attractors, corresponding to an accelerating universe and possessing dark energy and dark matter densities of the same order. We find that all the examined models, although accepting stable late-time accelerated solutions, cannot alleviate the coincidence problem, unless one imposes a form of fine-tuning in the model parameters. It seems that interacting phantom cosmology cannot fulfill the basic req…
In the present work, motivated by the work of Cai and Su [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 81}, 103514 (2010)], we propose a new type of interaction in dark sector, which can change its sign when our universe changes from deceleration to acceleration. We consider the cosmological evolution of quintessence and phantom with this type of interaction, and find that there are some scaling attractors which can help to alleviate the cosmological coincidence problem. Our results also show that this new type of interaction can bring new features to cosmology.
The properties of future singularities are investigated in the universe dominated by dark energy including the phantom-type fluid. We classify the finite-time singularities into four classes and explicitly present the models which give rise to these singularities by assuming the form of the equation of state of dark energy. We show the existence of a stable fixed point with an equation of state $w<-1$ and numerically confirm that this is actually a late-time attractor in the phantom-dominated universe. We also construct a phantom dark energy scenario coupled to dark matter that reproduces sing…
If the Hartle-Hawking wave function is the correct boundary condition of our universe, the history of our universe will be well approximated by an instanton. Although this instanton should be classicalized at infinity, as long as we are observing a process of each history, we may detect a non-classicalized part of field combinations. When we apply it to a dark energy model, this non-classicalized part of fields can be well embedded to a quintessence and a phantom model, i.e., a quintom model. Because of the property of complexified instantons, the phantomness will be naturally free from a big …
Applying the parametrization of dark energy density, we can construct directly independent-model potentials. In Born-Infeld type phantom dark energy model, we consider four special parametrization equation of state parameter. The evolutive behavior of dark energy density with respect to red-shift $z$, potentials with respect to $ϕ$ and $z$ are shown mathematically. Moreover, we investigate the effect of parameter $η$ upon the evolution of the constructed potential with respect to $z$. These results show that the evolutive behavior of constructed Born-Infeld type dark energy model is quite diff…
In order to study if the bulk viscosity may induce a big rip singularity on the flat FRW cosmologies, we investigate dissipative processes in the universe within the framework of the standard Eckart theory of relativistic irreversible thermodynamics, and in the full causal Israel–Stewart-Hiscock theory. We have found cosmological solutions which exhibit, under certain constraints, a big rip singularity. We show that the negative pressure generated by the bulk viscosity cannot avoid that the dark energy of the universe to be phantom energy.
In this letter, dark energy is obtained using dual roles of the Ricci scalar (as a physical field as well as geometry). Dark energy density, obtained here, mimics phantom and the derived Friedmann equation contains a term $ρ^2_{\rm de}/2 λ$ with $ρ_{\rm de}$ being the dark energy density and $λ$ being the cosmic tension. It is like brane-gravity inspired Friedmann equation, which arises without using the brane-gravity theory. It is found that acceleration is transient for $λ< 0$, but for $λ> 0$, expansion is found to encounter big-rip problem. It is shown that this problem can be avoided if da…
We study the time evolution of the test scalar and electromagnetic fields perturbations in configurations of phantom wormholes surrounded by dark energy with state parameter $ω< -1$. We observe obvious signals of echoes reflecting wormholes properties and disclose the physical reasons behind such phenomena. In particular, we find that the dark energy equation of state has a clear imprint in echoes in wave perturbations. When $ω$ approaches the phantom divide $ω=-1$ from below, the delay time of echoes becomes longer. The echo of gravitational wave is likely to be detected in the near future, t…
Infinitely cyclic cosmology is often frustrated by the black hole problem. It has been speculated that this obstacle in cyclic cosmology can be removed by taking into account a peculiar cyclic model derived from loop quantum cosmology or the braneworld scenario, in which phantom dark energy plays a crucial role. In this peculiar cyclic model, the mechanism of solving the black hole problem is through tearing up black holes by phantom. However, using the theory of fluid accretion onto black holes, we show in this paper that there exists another possibility: that black holes cannot be torn up by…
We investigate canonical, phantom and quintom models, with the various fields being non-minimally coupled to gravity, in the framework of holographic dark energy. We classify them and we discuss their cosmological implications. In particular, we examine the present value of the dark energy equation-of-state parameter and the crossing through the phantom divide, and we extract the conditions for a future cosmological singularity. The combined scenarios are in agreement with observations and reveal interesting cosmological behaviors.
We study a holographic model for the dark energy considered recently in the literature which postulates an energy density $ρ\sim R$, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar curvature. We obtain a cosmological scenario that comes from considering two non-interacting fluids along a reasonable Ansatz for the cosmic coincidence parameter. We adjust the involved parameters in the model according to the observational data and we show that the equation of state for the dark energy experience a cross through the -1 barrier. In addition, we find a disagreement in these parameters with respect to an approach from…
Motivated by our recent work \cite{set1}, we generalize this work to the interacting non-flat case. Therefore in this paper we deal with canonical, phantom and quintom models, with the various fields being non-minimally coupled to gravity, within the framework of interacting holographic dark energy. We employ the holographic model of interacting dark energy to obtain the equation of state for the holographic energy density in non-flat (closed) universe enclosed by the event horizon measured from the sphere of horizon named $L$.
We propose the Gauss-Bonnet dark energy model inspired by string/M-theory where standard gravity with scalar contains additional scalar-dependent coupling with Gauss-Bonnet invariant. It is demonstrated that effective phantom (or quintessence) phase of late universe may occur in the presence of such term when the scalar is phantom or for non-zero potential (for canonical scalar). However, with the increase of the curvature the GB term may become dominant so that phantom phase is transient and $w=-1$ barrier may be passed. Hence, the current acceleration of the universe may be caused by mixture…
We study the evolution of (phantom) dark energy universe by taking into account the higher-order string corrections to Einstein-Hilbert action with a fixed dilaton. While the presence of a cosmological constant gives stable de-Sitter fixed points in the cases of heterotic and bosonic strings, no stable de-Sitter solutions exist when a phantom fluid is present. We find that the universe can exhibit a Big Crunch singularity with a finite time for type II string, whereas it reaches a Big Rip singularity for heterotic and bosonic strings. Thus the fate of dark energy universe crucially depends upo…
We investigate the possibility that the galactic dark matter exists in an scenario where the phantom field is responsible for the dark energy. We obtain the statically and spherically approximate solution for this kind of the galaxy system with a supermassive black hole at its center. The solution of the metric functions is satisfied with $g_{tt} = - g_{rr}^{-1}$. Constrained by the observation of the rotational stars moving in circular orbits with nearly constant tangential speed in a spiral galaxy, the background of the phantom field which is spatially inhomogeneous has an exponential potent…
The role of the interaction in reaching and crossing the phantom divide line in the Chaplygin gas model is discussed. We obtain some necessary properties of the interaction that allow the model to arrive at or cross the phantom divide line. We show that these properties put some conditions on the ratio of dark matter to dark energy density in the present epoch.
In this paper we have investigated the cosmological dynamics of non-locally corrected gravity involving a function of the inverse d'Alembertian of the Ricci scalar, $f(\Box^{-1} R))$. Casting the dynamical equations into local form, we derive the fixed points of the dynamics and demonstrate the existence and stability of a one parameter family of dark energy solutions for a simple choice, $f(\Box^{-1} R)\sim \exp(α\Box^{-1} R)$. The effective EoS parameter is given by, $w_{\rm eff}=({α-1})/({3α-1})$ and the stability of the solutions is guaranteed provided that $1/3<α<2/3$. For $1/3<α<1/2$ and…
Two cosmological models with non-phantom matter having the same expansion of the universe as phantom cosmologies are constructed. The first model is characterized by the evolving gravitational "constant" $G$ and a dark energy component with a non-conserved energy-momentum tensor. The second model includes two interacting components, the dark energy component and the matter component. Closed form solutions are obtained for the constant values of model parameters and constraints on the parameters of each model from cosmological observations are outlined. For both models it is explicitly shown ho…
It is shown that phantom scalar models can be mapped into a mathematically equivalent, modified $F(R)$ gravity, which turns out to be complex, in general. Only for even scalar potentials is the ensuing modified gravity real. It is also demonstrated that, even in this case, modified gravity becomes complex at the region where the original phantom dark energy theory develops a Big Rip singularity. A number of explicit examples are presented which show that these two theories are not completely equivalent, from the physical viewpoint. This basically owes to the fact that the physical metric in bo…
Dark energy rapidly evolving from the dustlike state in the close past to the phantomlike state at present has been recently proposed as the best fit for the supernovae Ia data. Assuming that a dark energy component with an arbitrary scalar-field Lagrangian, which has a general dependence on the field itself and its first derivatives, dominates in the flat Friedmann universe, we analyze the possibility of a dynamical transition from the states with w>-1 to those with w<-1 or vice versa. We have found that generally such transitions are physically implausible because they are either realized by…
We consider the viability of dark energy (DE) models in the framework of the scalar-tensor theory of gravity, including the possibility to have a phantom DE at small redshifts $z$ as admitted by supernova luminosity-distance data. For small $z$, the generic solution for these models is constructed in the form of a power series in $z$ without any approximation. Necessary constraints for DE to be phantom today and to cross the phantom divide line $p=-ρ$ at small $z$ are presented. Considering the Solar System constraints, we find for the post-Newtonian parameters that $γ_{PN}<1$ and $γ_{PN,0}\ap…
As it follows from the classical analysis, the typical final state of the dark energy universe where dominant energy condition is violated is finite time, sudden future singularity (Big Rip). For a number of dark energy universes (including scalar phantom and effective phantom theories as well as specific quintessence model) we demonstrate that quantum effects play the dominant role near Big Rip, driving the universe out of future singularity (or, at least, making it milder). As a consequence, the entropy bounds with quantum corrections become well-defined near Big Rip. Similarly, black holes …
We investigate models of dark energy with purely kinetic multiple k-essence sources that allow for the crossing of the phantom divide line, without violating the conditions of stability. It is known that with more than one kinetic k-field one can possibly construct dark energy models whose equation of state parameter $\wx$ crosses -1 (the phantom barrier) at recent red-shifts, as indicated by the Supernova Ia and other observational probes. However, such models may suffer from cosmological instabilities, as the effective speed of propagation $\cx$ of the dark energy density perturbations may b…
Phantom fields with negative kinetic energy are often plagued by the vacuum quantum instability in the ultraviolet region. We present a Lorentz-violating dark energy model free from this problem and show that the crossing of the cosmological constant boundary w=-1 to the phantom equation of state is realized before reaching a de Sitter attractor. Another interesting feature is a peculiar time-dependence of the effective Newton's constant; the magnitude of this effect is naturally small but may be close to experimental limits. We also derive momentum scales of instabilities at which tachyons or…
The dark energy universe equation of state (EOS) with inhomogeneous,Hubble parameter dependent term is considered. The motivation to introduce such a term comes from time-dependent viscosity considerations and modifications of general relativity. For several explicit examples of such EOS it is demonstrated how the type of future singularity changes, how the phantom epoch emerges and how crossing of phantom barrier occurs. Similar cosmological regimes are considered for the universe with two interacting fluids and for universe with implicit EOS. For instance, the crossing of phantom barrier is …
In this work, we consider time-dependent dark energy star models, with an evolving parameter $ω$ crossing the phantom divide, $ω=-1$. Once in the phantom regime, the null energy condition is violated, which physically implies that the negative radial pressure exceeds the energy density. Therefore, an enormous negative pressure in the center may, in principle, imply a topology change, consequently opening up a tunnel and converting the dark energy star into a wormhole. The criteria for this topology change are discussed, in particular, we consider the Morse Index analysis and a Casimir energy a…
Unified generalized Chaplygin gas models assuming an interaction between dark energy and dark matter fluids have been previously proposed. Following these ideas, we consider a particular relation between dark densities, which allows the possibility of a time varying equation of state for dark energy that crosses the phantom divide at a recent epoch. Moreover, these densities decay during all the evolution of the Universe, avoiding a Big Rip. We find also a scaling solution, i.e. these densities are asymptotically proportional in the future, which contributes to the solution of the coincidence …
It is proved that no wormholes can be formed in viable scalar-tensor models of dark energy admitting its phantom-like ($w < -1$) behaviour in cosmology, even in the presence of electric or magnetic fields, if the non-minimal coupling function $f(Φ)$ is everywhere positive and the scalar field $Φ$ itself is not a ghost. Some special static, spherically symmetric wormhole solutions may exist if $f(Φ)$ is allowed to reach zero or to become negative, so that the effective gravitational constant becomes negative in some region making the graviton a ghost. If $f$ remains non-negative, such solutions…
Motivated by the exciting features and a recent proposed general form of the function of non-metricity scalar Q, we investigate the cosmological implications in $f(Q)$ gravity, through the resulting effective dark energy sector, extracting analytical expressions for the dark energy density, equation-of-state parameter and the deceleration parameters. We show that even in the absence of a cosmological constant, the universe exhibits the usual thermal history, with the sequence of matter and dark energy eras, and the dark-energy equation-of-state parameter always lie in the phantom regime. Addit…
Past analyses of the equation of state (EoS) of the Dark Energy (DE) were not incompatible with a phantom phase near our time. This has been the case in the years of WMAP observations, in combination with the remaining cosmological observables. Such situation did not completely disappear from the data collected from the Planck satellite mission. In it the EoS analysis may still be interpreted as suggesting w<-1, and so a mildly evolving DE cannot be discarded. In our opinion the usual ansatzs made on the structure of the EoS for dynamical DE models (e.g. quintessence and the like) are too simp…
We discuss a class of phantom ($p < - \varrho$) cosmological models. Except for phantom we admit various forms of standard types of matter and discuss the problem of singularities for these cosmologies. The singularities are different from those of standard matter cosmology since they appear for infinite values of the scale factor. We also find an interesting relation between the phantom models and standard matter models which is like the duality symmetry of string cosmology.
