We study the behavior of metric perturbations in a recently proposed model of phantom dark energy with tachyonic instability at long wavelengths. We find that metric perturbations exponentially grow in time, starting from very small values determined by vacuum fluctuations, and may become sizeable at late times. This property may be of interest for phenomenology.
Using Darboux transformation one can construct infinite family of potentials which lead to the flat spectrum of scalar field fluctuations with arbitrary multiple precision, and, at the same time, with "essentially blue" spectrum of perturbations of metric. Besides, we describe reconstruction problem: find classical potential V(phi) starting from the known "one-loop potential" u(t) = d^2V(phi(t))/d phi(t)^2.
We consider tachyonic braneworld with a bulk cosmological constant and investigate a configurational entropy of various magnitudes of scale factor. It is found that for a bulk negative/zero cosmological constant, the configurational entropy has a global minimum when the magnitude of scale factor reaches the critical value. This result seems to have intriguing implications such that an accelerated rate of the universe and cosmological inflation rate for radiation/matter domination are able to be determined by such critical value. We also find that the configurational entropy almost monotonicall…
It was confirmed that the negative modes of the Euclidean section for asymptotically flat black holes reveal the thermodynamic instability of these black holes in the grand canonical ensemble (GCE). These include Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström, Kerr, and Kerr-Newman black holes. In this work, we develop the relation between thermodynamic instability in the GCE and tachyonic instability for asymptotically flat black holes, where the latter is the onset for obtaining black holes with scalar hair. This implies that the tachyonic instability of black holes when introducing scalar coupling to th…
Lattice Monte Carlo studies in SU(3) gauge theory have shown that the topological charge distribution in the vacuum is dominated by thin coherent membranes of codimension one arranged in a layered, alternating-sign sandwich. A similar lamination of topological charge occurs in the 2D $CP^{N-1}$ model. In holographic QCD, the observed topological charge sheets are naturally interpreted as $D6$ branes wrapped around an $S_4$.. With this interpretation, the laminated array of topological charge membranes observed on the lattice can be identified as a "tachyonic crystal", a regular, alternating-si…
Spontaneous symmetry breaking usually occurs due to the tachyonic (spinodal) instability of a scalar field near the top of its effective potential at $ϕ= 0$. Naively, one might expect the field $ϕ$ to fall from the top of the effective potential and then experience a long stage of oscillations with amplitude O(v) near the minimum of the effective potential at $ϕ= v$ until it gives its energy to particles produced during these oscillations. However, it was recently found that the tachyonic instability rapidly converts most of the potential energy V(0) into the energy of colliding classical wave…
I review the theory of preheating after inflation, focusing on the recently found tachyonic preheating in the theories with spontaneous symmetry breaking. This occurs due to the tachyonic instability of the scalar field near the top of its effective potential. Contrary to the common expectation, tachyonic instability converts most of the energy into that of colliding classical waves very rapidly, within a single oscillation. Efficient tachyonic preheating is typical for the hybrid inflationary scenario, including SUSY motivated and brane inflation models.
The running of the Higgs self coupling may lead to numerous phenomena in early universe cosmology. In this paper we introduce a scenario where the Higgs running induces turns in the trajectory passing a region with tachyonic mass, leading to a temporal tachyonic growth in the curvature power spectrum. This effect induced by the Higgs leaves phenomena in the form of primordial black holes and stochastic gravitational waves, where proposed GW observatories will be able to probe in the near future.
We demonstrate that string motivated inflation ending via tachyonic instability leaves a detectable imprint on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation by virtue of the excitation of non-Gaussian gravitational fluctuations. The present WMAP bound on non-Gaussianity is shown to constrain the string scale by $M_S/M_P\leq 10^{-4}$ for string coupling $g_{s}<0.1$, hence improving the existing bounds. If tachyon fluctuations during inflation are not negligible, we find the stringent constraint $g_s\sim 10^{-9}$ for $M_{S}/M_{P}<10^{-3}$. This case may soon be ruled out by the forthcoming CMB…
Dense enough compact objects were recently shown to lead to an exponentially fast increase of the vacuum energy density for some free scalar fields properly coupled to the spacetime curvature as a consequence of a tachyonic-like instability. Once the effect is triggered, the star energy density would be overwhelmed by the vacuum energy density in a few milliseconds. This demands that eventually geometry and field evolve to a new configuration to bring the vacuum back to a stationary regime. Here, we show that the vacuum fluctuations built up during the unstable epoch lead to particle creation …
We apply the holographic principle to a flat dark energy dominated Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime filled with a tachyon scalar field with constant equation of state $w=p/ρ$, both for $w>-1$ and $w<-1$. By using a geometrical covariant procedure, which allows the construction of holographic hypersurfaces, we have obtained for each case the position of the preferred screen and have then compared these with those obtained by using the holographic dark energy model with the future event horizon as the infrared cutoff. In the phantom scenario, one of the two obtained holographic screens is pl…
We show that scalar as well as vector and tensor metric perturbations in the Randall-Sundrum II braneworld allow normalizable tachyonic modes, i.e., possible instabilities. These instabilities require nonvanishing initial anisotropic stresses on the brane. We show with a specific example that within the Randall-Sundrum II model, even though the tachyonic modes are excited, no instability develops. We argue, however, that in the cosmological context instabilities might in principle be present. We conjecture that the tachyonic modes are due to the singularity of the orbifold construction. We ill…
Scalar perturbations can grow during a phantomic cosmological phase as the big rip is approached, in spite of the high accelerated expansion regime, if the equation of state is such that $\frac{p}ρ = α< - {5/3}$. It is shown that such result is independent of the spatial curvature. The perturbed equations are exactly solved for any value of the curvature parameter $k$ and of the equation of state parameter $α$. Growing modes are found asymptotically under the condition $α< - {5/3}$. Since the Hubble radius decreases in a phantom universe, such result indicates that a phantom scenario may not s…
We exhibit a tachyonic mode in a linearized analysis of perturbations of large anti-de Sitter Reissner-Nordstrom black holes in four dimensions. In the large black hole limit, and up to a 0.7% discrepancy which is probably round-off error in the numerical analysis, the tachyon appears precisely when the black hole becomes thermodynamically unstable.
Phantom fields with negative kinetic energy are often plagued by the vacuum quantum instability in the ultraviolet region. We present a Lorentz-violating dark energy model free from this problem and show that the crossing of the cosmological constant boundary w=-1 to the phantom equation of state is realized before reaching a de Sitter attractor. Another interesting feature is a peculiar time-dependence of the effective Newton's constant; the magnitude of this effect is naturally small but may be close to experimental limits. We also derive momentum scales of instabilities at which tachyons or…
It was recently shown that a scalar field suitably coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant $\mathcal{G}$ can undergo a spin-induced linear tachyonic instability near a Kerr black hole. This instability appears only once the dimensionless spin $j$ is sufficiently large, that is, $j \gtrsim 0.5$. A tachyonic instability is the hallmark of spontaneous scalarization. Focusing, for illustrative purposes, on a class of theories that do exhibit this instability, we show that stationary, rotating black hole solutions do indeed have scalar hair once the spin-induced instability threshold is exceeded, whi…
We show that a massless canonical scalar field minimally coupled to general relativity can become a tachyonic ghost at low energies around a background in which the scalar's gradient is spacelike. By performing a canonical transformation we demonstrate that this low energy ghost can be recast, at the level of the action, in a form of a fluid that undergoes a Jeans-like instability affecting only modes with large wavelength. This illustrates that low-energy tachyonic ghosts do not lead to a catastrophic quantum vacuum instability, unlike the usual high-energy ghost degrees of freedom.
We study massive scalar field perturbation on Kerr black holes in dynamical Chern-Simons gravity by performing a $(2+1)$-dimensional simulation. Object pictures of the wave dynamics in time domain are obtained. The tachyonic instability is found to always occur for any nonzero black hole spin and any scalar field mass as long as the coupling constant exceeds a critical value. The presence of the mass term suppresses or even quenches the instability. The quantitative dependence of the onset of the tachyonic instability on the coupling constant, the scalar field mass and the black hole spin is g…
Plateau inflation is an experimentally consistent framework in which the scale of inflation can be kept relatively low. Close to the edge of the plateau, scalar perturbations are subject to a strong tachyonic instability. Tachyonic preheating is realized when, after inflation, the oscillating inflaton repeatedly re-enters the plateau. We develop the analytic theory of this process and expand the linear approach by including backreaction between the coherent background and growing perturbations. For a family of plateau models, the analytic predictions are confronted with numerical estimates. Ou…
We study a metric cubic gravity theory considering odd-parity modes of linear inhomogeneous perturbations on a spatially homogeneous Bianchi type I manifold close to the isotropic de Sitter spacetime. We show that in the regime of small anisotropy, the theory possesses new degrees of freedom compared to General Relativity, whose kinetic energy vanishes in the limit of exact isotropy. From the mass dispersion relation we show that such theory always possesses at least one ghost mode as well as a very short-time-scale (compared to the Hubble time) classical tachyonic (or ghost-tachyonic) instabi…
Spontaneous scalarization is a mechanism that endows relativistic stars and black holes with a nontrivial configuration only when their spacetime curvature exceeds some threshold. The standard way to trigger spontaneous scalarization is via a tachyonic instability at the linear level, which is eventually quenched due to the effect of non-linear terms. In this paper, we identify all of the terms in the Horndeski action that contribute to the (effective) mass term in the linearized equations and, hence, can cause or contribute to the tachyonic instability that triggers scalarization.
We study the instability of a scalar field at the end of hybrid inflation, using both analytical techniques and numerical simulations. We improve previous studies by taking the inflaton field fully into account, and show that the range of unstable modes depends sensitively on the velocity of the inflaton field, and thereby on the Hubble rate, at the end of inflation. If topological defects are formed, their number density is determined by the shortest unstable wavelength. Finally, we show that the oscillations of the inflaton field amplify the inhomogeneities in the energy density, leading to …
The Standard Model Higgs becomes tachyonic at high energy scales according to current measurements. This unstable regime of the Higgs potential can be realized in the early Universe during high scale inflation, potentially with catastrophic consequences. This letter highlights a crucial inherent feature of such configurations that has so far remained ignored: Higgs particle production out of vacuum induced by the rapidly evolving Higgs field, which gets exponentially enhanced due to the tachyonic instability. Such explosive particle production can rapidly drain energy away from the Higgs field…
It has been suggested that a scalar field with negative kinetic energy, or ``ghost,'' could be the source of the observed late-time cosmological acceleration. Naively, such theories should be ruled out by the catastrophic quantum instability of the vacuum. We derive phenomenological bounds on the Lorentz-violating ultraviolet cutoff Lambda which must apply to low-energy effective theories of ghosts, in order to keep the instability at unobservable levels. Assuming only that ghosts interact at least gravitationally, we show that Lambda < 3 MeV for consistency with the cosmic gamma ray backgroun…
We show that in tilting perfect fluid cosmological models with an ultra-radiative equation of state, generically the tilt becomes extreme at late times and, as the tilt instability sets in, observers moving with the tilting fluid will experience singular behaviour in which infinite expansion is reached within a finite proper time, similar to that of phantom cosmology (but without the need for exotic forms of matter).
We consider ideal fluid and equivalent scalar field dark energy universes where all four known types of finite-time, future singularities occur at some parameter values. It is demonstrated that pressure/energy density of such quintessence/phantom dark energy diverges in spherically-symmetric spacetime at finite radius or at the center. This may cause the instability of the relativistic star or black hole in such universe. The resolution of the problem via the extra modification of the equation of state is briefly discussed.
In type IIB Fibre Inflation models the inflaton is a Kaehler modulus which is kinetically coupled to the corresponding axion. In this setup the curvature of the field space induces tachyonic isocurvature perturbations normal to the background inflationary trajectory. However we argue that the associated instability is unphysical since it is due to the use of ill-defined entropy variables. In fact, upon using the correct relative entropy perturbation, we show that in Fibre Inflation axionic isocurvature perturbations decay during inflation and the dynamics is essentially single-field.
We study the quantum stability of Type IIB orbifold and orientifold string models in various dimensions, including Melvin backgrounds, where supersymmetry (SUSY) is broken {\it à la} Scherk-Schwarz (SS) by twisting periodicity conditions along a circle of radius R. In particular, we compute the R-dependence of the one-loop induced vacuum energy density $ρ(R)$, or cosmological constant. For SS twists different from Z2 we always find, for both orbifolds and orientifolds, a monotonic $ρ(R)<0$, eventually driving the system to a tachyonic instability. For Z2 twists, orientifold models can have a d…
We study the stability of static as well as of rotating and charged black holes in (4+1)-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space-time which possess spherical horizon topology. We observe a non-linear instability related to the condensation of a charged, tachyonic scalar field and construct "hairy" black hole solutions of the full system of coupled Einstein, Maxwell and scalar field equations. We observe that the limiting solution for small horizon radius is either a hairy soliton solution or a singular solution that is not a regular extremal solution. Within the context of the gauge/gravity duality t…
Locally AdS$_{d-1}\times\mathbb{R}$ uniform black strings (UBS) in the presence of a massless scalar field are believed to avoid the onset of the Gregory-Laflamme (GL) instability in $d\ge4$ as no tachyonic modes exist in the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. We present analytic and numerical evidence of GL modes in the Lichnerowicz spectrum indicating that AdS$_{d-1}$ UBSs are classically and thermodynamically unstable at the linear level in $d>4$. In $d=4$, we confirm that uniform BTZ$_3$ strings are indeed stable as previously suggested. We propose that linear instabilities of blac…
We show that in hybrid inflation it is possible to generate large second-order perturbations in the cosmic microwave background due to the instability of the tachyonic field during preheating. We carefully calculate this effect from the tachyon contribution to the gauge-invariant curvature perturbation, clarifying some confusion in the literature concerning nonlocal terms in the tachyon curvature perturbation; we show explicitly that such terms are absent. We quantitatively compute the nongaussianity generated by the tachyon field during the preheating phase and translate the experimental cons…
We consider warped compactifications in (4+d)-dimensional theories, with four dimensional de Sitter dS_4 vacua (with Hubble parameter H) and with a compact internal space. After introducing a gauge-invariant formalism for the generic metric perturbations of these backgrounds, we focus on modes which are scalar with respect to dS_4. The physical eigenmasses of these modes acquire a large universal tachyonic contribution -12d/(d+2) H^2, independently of the stabilization mechanism for the compact space, in addition to the usual KK masses, which instead encode the effects of the stabilization. Ge…
It is well known that there are resonant states with complex energy for the supercritical Coulomb impurity in graphene. We show that opening of a quasiparticle gap decreases the imaginary part of energy, |ImE|, of these states and stabilizes the system. For gapless quasiparticles with strong Coulomb interaction in graphene, we solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the electron - hole bound state and show that it has a tachyonic solution for strong enough coupling α=e^2/κ\hbar v_F leading to instability of the system. In the random-phase approximation, the critical coupling is estimated to be α…
We consider cosmological models with a dynamical dark energy field, and study the presence of three types of commonly found instabilities, namely ghost (when fields have negative kinetic energy), gradient (negative momentum squared) and tachyon (negative mass squared). In particular, we study the linear scalar perturbations of theories with two interacting scalar fields as a proxy for a dark energy and matter fields, and explicitly show how canonical transformations relate these three types of instabilities with each other. We generically show that low-energy ghosts are equivalent to tachyonic…
A scale invariant spectrum of isocurvature perturbations is generated during collapse in the scaling solution in models where two or more fields have steep negative exponential potentials. The scale invariance of the spectrum is realised by a tachyonic instability in the isocurvature field. We show that this instability is due to the fact that the scaling solution is a saddle point in the phase space. The late time attractor is identified with a single field dominated ekpyrotic collapse in which a steep blue spectrum for isocurvature perturbations is found. Although quantum fluctuations do not…
It is proved that no wormholes can be formed in viable scalar-tensor models of dark energy admitting its phantom-like ($w < -1$) behaviour in cosmology, even in the presence of electric or magnetic fields, if the non-minimal coupling function $f(Φ)$ is everywhere positive and the scalar field $Φ$ itself is not a ghost. Some special static, spherically symmetric wormhole solutions may exist if $f(Φ)$ is allowed to reach zero or to become negative, so that the effective gravitational constant becomes negative in some region making the graviton a ghost. If $f$ remains non-negative, such solutions…
We investigate the possibility that the galactic dark matter exists in an scenario where the phantom field is responsible for the dark energy. We obtain the statically and spherically approximate solution for this kind of the galaxy system with a supermassive black hole at its center. The solution of the metric functions is satisfied with $g_{tt} = - g_{rr}^{-1}$. Constrained by the observation of the rotational stars moving in circular orbits with nearly constant tangential speed in a spiral galaxy, the background of the phantom field which is spatially inhomogeneous has an exponential potent…

A scale-invariant spectrum of isocurvature perturbations is generated during collapse in the ekpyrotic scaling solution in models where multiple fields have steep negative exponential potentials. The scale invariance of the spectrum is realized by a tachyonic instability in the isocurvature field. This instability drives the scaling solution to the late time attractor that is the old ekpyrotic collapse dominated by a single field. We show that the transition from the scaling solution to the single field dominated ekpyrotic collapse automatically converts the initial isocurvature perturbations …
We discuss the cosmological consequences of a model based on a non-local infrared modification of Einstein equations. We find that the model generates a dynamical dark energy that can account for the presently observed value of $Ω_{\rm DE}$, without introducing a cosmological constant. Tuning a free mass parameter $m$ to a value $m\simeq 0.67 H_0$ we reproduce the observed value $Ω_{\rm DE}\simeq 0.68$. This leaves us with no free parameter and we then get a pure prediction for the EOS parameter of dark energy. Writing $w_{\rm DE}(a)=w_0+(1-a) w_a$, we find $w_0\simeq-1.04$ and $w_a\simeq -0.0…
