Using the Painleve analysis preceded by appropriate transformations of nonlinear systems under investigation, we discover two new cases in which the Pietrzyk-Kanattsikov-Bandelow vector short pulse equation must be integrable due to the results of the Painleve test. Those cases are technologically important because they correspond to the propagation of polarized ultra-short light pulses in usual isotropic silica optical fibers.
We obtain the bi-Hamiltonian structure for some of the two-component short pulse equations proposed in the literature to generalize the original short pulse equation when polarized pulses propagate in anisotropic media.
We show how the Yao-Zeng system of coupled short-pulse equations is related to the original short-pulse equation and obtain the correct zero-curvature representation of the Yao-Zeng system via this relationship.
We further generalize the generalized short pulse equation studied recently in [Commun. Nonlinear Sci. Numer. Simulat. 39 (2016) 21-28; arXiv:1510.08822], and find in this way two new integrable nonlinear wave equations which are transformable to linear Klein-Gordon equations.
By means of transformations to nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations, we show that a generalized short pulse equation is integrable in two (and, most probably, only two) distinct cases of its coefficients. The first case is the original short pulse equation (SPE). The second case, which we call the single-cycle pulse equation (SCPE), is a previously overlooked scalar reduction of a known integrable system of coupled SPEs. We get the Lax pair and bi-Hamiltonian structure for the SCPE and show that the smooth envelope soliton of the SCPE can be as short as only one cycle of its carrier frequency.
Integrable models of statistical mechanics play a prominent role in modern mathematical physics, especially in conformal field theory, knot theory, combinatorics, topology, etc. In this brief review, we discuss a program of constructing integrable lattice spin models with the nearest neighbor interaction using methods inspired by the supersymmetric gauge theory computations, called gauge/YBE correspondence. After a brief introduction to the topic, we review some recent examples of this correspondence and the role of special functions and symmetries. Finally, we discuss future directions of res…
We prove that the Schafer-Wayne short pulse equation (SPE) which describes the propagation of ultra-short optical pulses in nonlinear media is integrable. First, we discover a Lax pair of the SPE which turns out to be of the Wadati-Konno-Ichikawa type. Second, we construct a chain of transformations which relates the SPE with the sine-Gordon equation.
Sufficient conditions for wave breaking are found for the short-pulse equation describing wave packets of few cycles on the ultra-short pulse scale. The analysis relies on the method of characteristics and conserved quantities of the short-pulse equation and holds both on an infinite line and in a periodic domain. Numerical illustrations of the finite-time wave breaking are given in a periodic domain.
In this paper, we propose a complex short pulse equation of both focusing and defocusing types, which governs the propagation of ultra-short pulses in nonlinear optical fibers. It can be viewed as an analogue of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation in the ultra-short pulse regime. Furthermore, we construct the multi-dark soliton solution for the defocusing complex short pulse equation through the Darboux transformation and reciprocal (hodograph) transformation. One- and two-dark soliton solutions are given explicitly, whose properties and dynamics are analyzed and illustrated.
We prove global well-posedness of the short-pulse equation with small initial data in Sobolev space $H^2$. Our analysis relies on local well-posedness results of Schäfer & Wayne, the correspondence of the short-pulse equation to the sine-Gordon equation in characteristic coordinates, and a number of conserved quantities of the short-pulse equation. We also prove local and global well-posedness of the sine-Gordon equation in an appropriate function space.
We prove the integrability of the short pulse equation derived recently by Schäfer and Wayne from a hamiltonian point of view. We give its bi-hamiltonian structure and show how the recursion operator defined by the hamiltonian operators is connected with the one obtained by Sakovich and Sakovich. An alternative zero-curvature formulation is also given.
An exact nonsingular solitary wave solution of the Schafer-Wayne short pulse equation is derived from the breather solution of the sine-Gordon equation by means of a transformation between these two integrable equations.
We propose an integrable system of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations with cubic-quintic terms describing the effects of quintic nonlinearity on the ultra-short optical soliton pulse propagation in non-Kerr media. Lax pair, conserved quantities and exact soliton solutions for the proposed integrable model are given. Explicit form of two-solitons are used to study soliton interaction showing many intriguing features including inelastic (shape changing) scattering. Another novel system of coupled equations with fifth-degree nonlinearity is derived, which represents vector generalization of …
In this article we review the basic concepts regarding quantum integrability. Special emphasis is given on the algebraic content of integrable models. The associated algebras are essentially described by the Yang-Baxter and boundary Yang-Baxter equations depending on the choice of boundary conditions. The relation between the aforementioned equations and the braid group is briefly discussed. A short review on quantum groups as well as the quantum inverse scattering method (algebraic Bethe ansatz) is also presented.
We revisit recent results on integrable cases for higher-dimensional generalizations of the 2D pentagram map: short-diagonal, dented, deep-dented, and corrugated versions, and define a universal class of pentagram maps, which are proved to possess projective duality. We show that in many cases the pentagram map cannot be included into integrable flows as a time-one map, and discuss how the corresponding notion of discrete integrability can be extended to include jumps between invariant tori. We also present a numerical evidence that certain generalizations of the integrable 2D pentagram map ar…
We examine the integrability of two models used for the interaction of long and short waves in dispersive media. One is more classical but arguably cannot be derived from the underlying water wave equations, while the other one was recently derived. We use the method of Zakharov and Schulman to attempt to construct conserved quantities for these systems at different orders in the magnitude of the solutions. The coupled KdV-NLS model is shown to be nonintegrable, due to the presence of fourth-order resonances. A coupled real KdV - complex KdV system is shown to suffer the same fate, except for …
In the present paper, we propose a complex short pulse equation and a coupled complex short equation to describe ultra-short pulse propagation in optical fibers. They are shown to be integrable due to the existence of Lax pairs and infinite number of conservation laws. Furthermore, we construct their multi-soliton solutions in terms of pfaffians by virtue of Hirota bilinear method. One- and two-soliton solutions are investigated in details, showing favorable properties in modeling ultra-short pulses with a few optical cycles. Especially, same as the coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation, inte…
A higher grading affine algebraic construction of integrable hierarchies, containing the Wadati-Konno-Ichikawa (WKI) hierarchy as a particular case, is proposed. We show that a two-component generalization of the Sch\" afer-Wayne short pulse equation arises quite naturally from the first negative flow of the WKI hierarchy. Some novel integrable nonautonomous models are also proposed. The conserved charges, both local and nonlocal, are obtained from the Riccati form of the spectral problem. The loop-soliton solutions of the WKI hierarchy are systematically constructed through gauge followed by …
After a short review of the classical Lie theorem, a finite dimensional Lie algebra of vector fields is considered and the most general conditions under which the integral curves of one of the fields can be obtained by quadratures in a prescribed way will be discussed, determining also the number of quadratures needed to integrate the system. The theory will be illustrated with examples andbn an extension of the theorem where the Lie algebras are replaced by some distributions will also be presented.
In this article, a fully discrete short pulse (SP) equation is presented as an integrability condition of a linear system of difference equations (also known as discrete Lax pair). Additionally, two semi-discrete versions of the SP equation have also been obtained from fully discrete SP equation under continuum limits. Darboux transformation is employed to compute multi-soliton solutions of fully discrete and semi-discrete SP equations. Explicit expressions of first and second nontrivial soliton solutions are computed. We also derived explicit expression of breather solution for fully discrete…
Fiber guided optical signal propagating in a Erbium doped nonlinear resonant medium is known to produce cleaner solitonic pulse, described by the self induced transparency (SIT) coupled to nonlinear Schroedinger equation. We discover two new possibilities hidden in its integrable structure, for amplification and control of the optical pulse. Using the variable soliton width permitted by the integrability of this model, the broadening pulse can be regulated by adjusting the initial population inversion of the opant atoms. The effect can be enhanced by another innovative application of its const…
The paper presents hodograph transformation between nonlocal short pulse models and the first member in the AKNS negative hierarchy (AKNS($-1$)). We consider real and complex multi-component cases. It is shown that the independent variables of the short pulse models and AKNS($-1$) that are connected via hodograph transformation are covariant in nonlocal reductions.
We consider the evolution of ultra-short optical pulses in linear and nonlinear media. For the linear case, we first show that the initial-boundary value problem for Maxwell's equations in which a pulse is injected into a quiescent medium at the left endpoint can be approximated by a linear wave equation which can then be further reduced to the linear short-pulse equation. A rigorous proof is given that the solution of the short pulse equation stays close to the solutions of the original wave equation over the time scales expected from the multiple scales derivation of the short pulse equation…
From a super extension of the Wadati, Konno and Ichikawa scheme for integrable systems and using a $\mathrm{osp(1,2)}$ valued connection 1-form we obtain super generalizations for the Short Pulse equation as well for the Elastic Beam equation.
Using renormalization group techniques, we derive an extended short- pulse equation as approximation to a nonlinear wave equation. We investigate the new equation numerically and show that the new equation captures efficiently higher- order effects on pulse propagation in cubic nonlinear media. We illustrate our findings using one- and two-soliton solutions of the first-order short-pulse equation as initial conditions in the nonlinear wave equation.
Nonlinear Schrödinger equation, short pulse equation and complex short pulse equation have important application in nonlinear optics. They can be derived from the Maxwell equation. In this paper, we investigate a coupled focusing-defocusing complex short pulse equation. The bright-bright, bright-dark and dark-dark soliton solutions of the coupled focusing-defocusing complex short pulse equation are given. Then the breathers are derived from the dark soliton solution. The rogue wave solutions are also constructed. The dynamics and the asymptotic behavior of the soliton solutions are analyzed, w…
In the present paper, we mainly study the integrable semi-discretization of a multi-component short pulse equation. Firstly, we briefly review the bilinear equations for a multi-component short pulse equation proposed by Matsuno (J. Math. Phys. \textbf{52} 123705) and reaffirm its $N$-soliton solution in terms of pfaffians. Then by using a Bäcklund transformation of the bilinear equations and defining a discrete hodograph (reciprocal) transformation, an integrable semi-discrete multi-component short pulse equation is constructed. Meanwhile, its $N$-soliton solution in terms of pfaffians is als…
This paper considers the whole hierarchy of bi-Hamiltonian integrable equations associated to each of the Short-Pulse (SP) equation and the Sine-Gordon (SG) equation. We prove that the transformation that relates the SP equation with the SG equation also serves to establish the correspondence between their flows and Hamiltonian conservation laws in respective hierarchy.
We first derive an integrable deformed hierarchy of short pulse equation and their Lax representation. Then we concentrated on the solution of integrable deformed short pulse equation (IDSPE). By proposing a generalized reciprocal transformation, we find a new integrable deformed sine-Gordon equation (IDSGE) and its Lax representation. The multisoliton solutions, negaton solutions and positon solutions for the IDSGE and the N-loop soliton solutions, N-negaton and N-positon solutions for the IDSPE are presented. In the reduced case the new N-positon solutions and N-negaton solutions for short p…
The short pulse (SP) equation is a novel model equation describing the propagation of ultra-short optical pulses in nonlinear media. This article reviews some recent results about the SP equation. In particular, we focus our attention on its exact solutions. By using a newly developed method of solution, we derive multisoliton solutions as well as 1-and 2-phase periodic solutions and investigate their properties.
We study a new hierarchy of equations containing the Short Pulse equation, which describes the evolution of very short pulses in nonlinear media, and the Elastic Beam equation, which describes nonlinear transverse oscillations of elastic beams under tension. We show that the hierarchy of equations is integrable. We obtain the two compatible Hamiltonian structures. We construct an infinite series of both local and nonlocal conserved charges. A Lax description is presented for both systems. For the Elastic Beam equations we also obtain a nonstandard Lax representation.
The short pulse equation (SPE) is considered as an initial-boundary value problem. It is found that the solutions of the SPE must satisfy an integral relation otherwise the temporal derivative exhibits discontinuities. This integral relation is not necessary for a solution to exist. An infinite number of such constraints can be dynamically generated by the evolution equation.
We propose a multi-component generalization of the modified short pulse (SP) equation which was derived recently as a reduction of Feng's two-component SP equation. Above all, we address the two-component system in depth. We obtain the Lax pair, an infinite nember of conservation laws and multisoliton solutions for the system, demonstrating its integrability. Subsequently, we show that the two-component system exhibits cusp solitons and breathers for which the detailed analysis is performed. Specifically, we explore the interaction process of two cusp solitons and derive the formula for the ph…
We study the propagation of ultra-short pulses in a cubic nonlinear medium. Using multiple-scale technique, we derive a new wave equation that preserves the nonlocal dispersion present in Maxwell's equations. As a result, we are able to understand how ultra-short nonlinear shocks are stabilized by dispersive terms. A delicate balance between dispersion and nonlinearity leads to a new type of solitary waves. Their stability is confirmed by numerical simulations of full Maxwell's equations.
The distinctive features of passing the two-component extremely short pulses through the nonlinear media are discussed. The equations considered describe the propagation in the two-level anisotropic medium of the electromagnetic pulses consisting of ordinary and extraordinary components and an evolution of the transverse-longitudinal acoustic pulses in a crystal containing the paramagnetic impurities with effective spin S=1/2. The solutions decreasing exponentially and algebraically are studied.
In this paper we investigate the coupled focusing-defocusing complex short pulse equation, which describe the propagation of ultra-short optical pulses in cubic nonlinear media. Through the unified transform method, the initial-boundary value problem for the coupled focusing-defocusing complex short pulse equation with $4\times 4$ Lax pair on the half-line are to be analyzed. Assuming that the solution $\{q_1(x,t),q_2(x,t)\}$ of the coupled focusing-defocusing complex short pulse equation exists, we show that $\{q_{1,x}(x,t),q_{2,x}(x,t)\}$ can be expressed in terms of the unique solution of a…
We consider in the unidirectional approximation the propagation of an ultra short electromagnetic pulse in a resonant medium consisting of molecules characterized by a transition operator with both diagonal and non-diagonal matrix elements. We find the zero-curvature representation of the reduced Maxwell-Bloch equations in the sharp line limit. This can be used to develop the inverse scattering transform method to solve these equations. Finally we obtain two types of exact traveling pulse solutions, one with the usual exponential decay and another with an algebraic decay.
The propagation of extremely short pulses of electromagnetic field (electromagnetic spikes) is considered in the framework of a model where the material medium is represented by anharmonic oscillators with cubic nonlinearities (Duffing model) and waves can propagate only in the right direction. The system of reduced Maxwell-Duffing equations admits two families of exact analytical solutions in the form of solitary waves. These are bright spikes propagating on a zero background, and bright and dark spikes, propagating on a nonzero background. Direct simulations demonstrate that these pulses are…
