We describe the Hopf algebraic structure of Feynman graphs for non-abelian gauge theories, and prove compatibility of the so-called Slavnov-Taylor identities with the coproduct. When these identities are taken into account, the coproduct closes on the Green's functions, which thus generate a Hopf subalgebra.
We briefly review the Hopf algebra structure arising in the renormalization of quantum field theories. We construct the Hopf algebra explicitly for a simple toy model and show how renormalization is achieved for this particular model.
This paper gives a review of Connes-Kreimer formulation of perturbative renormalization in Quantum Field Theory. We begin with the derivation of the Feynman calculus, the Hopf algebra structure on Feynman diagrams and we show the natural occurence of Birkhoff decomposition in perturbative renormalization. Most of proofs is added in the present paper.
In this paper we are going to find a rooted tree representation from universal Hopf algebra of renormalization (in Connes-Marcolli's approach in the study of renormalizable Quantum Field Theories under the scheme minimal subtraction in dimensional regularization). With attention to this new picture, interesting relations between this specific Hopf algebra and some important Hopf algebras of rooted trees and also Hopf algebra of (quasi-) symmetric functions are obtained. And moreover a new interpretation from universal singular frame, based on Hall rooted trees, is deduced such that it can be a…
In this talk, we show how the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra morphism can be extended when taking into account the wave-function renormalization. This leads us to a semi-direct product of invertible power series by formal diffeomorphisms.
In this paper we describe the right-sided combinatorial Hopf structure of three Hopf algebras appearing in the context of renormalization in quantum field theory: the non-commutative version of the Faà di Bruno Hopf algebra, the non-commutative version of the charge renormalization Hopf algebra on planar binary trees for quantum electrodynamics, and the non-commutative version of the Pinter renormalization Hopf algebra on any bosonic field. We also describe two general ways to define the associative product in such Hopf algebras, the first one by recursion, and the second one by grafting and s…
We study the structure of renormalization Hopf algebras of gauge theories. We identify certain Hopf subalgebras in them, whose character groups are semidirect products of invertible formal power series with formal diffeomorphisms. This can be understood physically as wave function renormalization and renormalization of the coupling constants, respectively. After taking into account the Slavnov-Taylor identities for the couplings as generators of a Hopf ideal, we find Hopf subalgebras in the corresponding quotient as well. In the second part of the paper, we explain the origin of these Hopf ide…
We study the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of renormalization in the case of gauge theories. We show that the Ward identities and the Slavnov-Taylor identities (in the abelian and non-abelian case respectively) are compatible with the Hopf algebra structure, in that they generate a Hopf ideal. Consequently, the quotient Hopf algebra is well-defined and has those identities built in. This provides a purely combinatorial and rigorous proof of compatibility of the Slavnov-Taylor identities with renormalization.
The structure of the Connes-Kreimer renormalization Hopf algebra is studied for gauge theories, with particular emphasis on the BRST-formalism. We work in the explicit example of quantum chromodynamics, the physical theory of quarks and gluons. A coaction of the renormalization Hopf algebra is defined on the coupling constants and the fields. In this context, BRST-invariance of the action implies the existence of certain Hopf ideals in the renormalization Hopf algebra, encoding the Slavnov-Taylor identities for the coupling constants.
We establish Sakakibara's differential equations in a matrix setting for the counter term (respectively renormalized character) in Connes-Kreimer's Birkhoff decomposition in any connected graded Hopf algebra, thus including Feynman rules in perturbative renormalization as a key example.
In 1999, A. Connes and D. Kreimer have discovered the Hopf algebra structure on the Feynman graphs of scalar field theory. They have found that the renormalization can be interpreted as a solving of some Riemann -- Hilbert problem. In this work a generalization of their scheme to the case of quantum electrodynamics is proposed. The action of the gauge group on the Hopf algebra of diagrams are defined and the proof that this action is consistent with the Hopf algebra structure is given.
In the context of massless quantum electrodynamics (QED) with a linear covariant gauge fixing, the connection between the counterterm and the Hopf-algebraic approach to renormalization is examined. The coproduct formula of Green's functions contains two invariant charges, which give rise to different renormalization group functions. All formulas are tested by explicit computations to third loop order. The possibility of a finite electron self-energy by fixing a generalized linear covariant gauge is discussed. An analysis of subdivergences leads to the conclusion that such a gauge only exists i…
These are the notes of five lectures given at the Summer School {\em Geometric and Topological Methods for Quantum Field Theory}, held in Villa de Leyva (Colombia), July 2--20, 2007. The lectures are meant for graduate or almost graduate students in physics or mathematics. They include references, many examples and some exercices. The content is the following. The first lecture is a short introduction to algebraic and proalgebraic groups, based on some examples of groups of matrices and groups of formal series, and their Hopf algebras of coordinate functions. The second lecture presents a very…
We show how the Hopf algebra of rooted trees encodes the combinatorics of Epstein-Glaser renormalization and coordinate space renormalization in general. In particular we prove that the Epstein-Glaser time-ordered products can be obtained from the Hopf algebra by suitable Feynman rules, mapping trees to operator-valued distributions. Twisting the antipode with a renormalization map formally solves the Epstein-Glaser recursion and provides local counterterms due to the Hochschild 1-closedness of the grafting operator $B_+$.
This masters thesis reviews the algebraic formulation of renormalization using Hopf algebras as pioneered by Dirk Kreimer and applies it to a toy model of quantum field theory given through iterated insertions of a single primitive divergence into itself. Using this example in a subtraction scheme, we exhibit the renormalized Feynman rules to yield Hopf algebra morphisms into the Hopf algebra of polynomials and as a consequence study the emergence of the renormalization group in connection with combinatorial Dyson-Schwinger equations. In particular we relate the perturbative expansion of the a…
We obtain the contributions to the renormalization group functions of all the diagrams containing the unique one-loop primitive divergence of a simple supersymmetric Wess--Zumino model, up to more than 200 loops. The asymptotic behavior of the coefficients in the expansion of the anomalous dimension is analyzed.
This paper is devoted to the study of renormalization of the quartic melonic tensor model in dimension (=rank) five. We review the perturbative renormalization and the computation of the one loop beta function, confirming the asymptotic freedom of the model. We then define the Connes-Kreimer-like Hopf algebra describing the combinatorics of the renormalization of this model and we analyze in detail, at one- and two-loop levels, the Hochschild cohomology allowing to write the combinatorial Dyson-Schwinger equations. Feynman tensor graph Hopf subalgebras are also exhibited.
It is well known that the mathematical structure underlying renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory is based on a Hopf algebra of Feynman diagrams. A precondition for this is locality of the field theory. Consequently, one might suspect that non-local field theories such as matrix or tensor field theories cannot benefit from a similar algebraic understanding. Here I show that, on the contrary, the renormalization and perturbative diagramatics of a broad class of such field theories is based in the same way on a Hopf algebra. These theories are characterized by interaction vertices…
This article aims to give a short introduction into Hopf-algebraic aspects of renormalization, enjoying growing attention for more than a decade by now. As most available literature is concerned with the minimal subtraction scheme, we like to point out properties of the kinematic subtraction scheme which is also widely used in physics (under the names of MOM or BPHZ). In particular we relate renormalized Feynman rules $ϕ_R$ in this scheme to the universal property of the Hopf algebra $H_R$ of rooted trees, exhibiting a refined renormalization group equation which is equivalent to $ϕ_R: H_R \ri…
We analyse the Dirichlet convolution ring of arithmetic number theoretic functions. It turns out to fail to be a Hopf algebra on the diagonal, due to the lack of complete multiplicativity of the product and coproduct. A related Hopf algebra can be established, which however overcounts the diagonal. We argue that the mechanism of renormalization in quantum field theory is modelled after the same principle. Singularities hence arise as a (now continuously indexed) overcounting on the diagonals. Renormalization is given by the map from the auxiliary Hopf algebra to the weaker multiplicative struc…
We give a natural monomorphism from the necklace Lie coalgebra, defined for any quiver, to Connes and Kreimer's Lie coalgebra of trees, and extend this to a map from a certain quiver-theoretic Hopf algebra to Connes and Kreimer's renormalization Hopf algebra, as well as to pre-Lie versions. These results are direct analogues of Turaev's results in 2004, by replacing algebras of loops on surfaces with algebras of paths on quivers. We also factor the morphism through an algebra of chord diagrams and explain the geometric version. We then explain how all of the Hopf algebras are uniquely determin…
In this work, we develop systematically the ``Dirichlet Hopf algebra of arithmetics'' by dualizing addition and multiplication maps. We study the additive and multiplicative antipodal convolutions which fail to give rise to Hopf algebra structures, obeying only a weakened (multiplicative) homomorphism axiom. The consequences of the weakened structure, called a Hopf gebra, e.g. on cohomology are explored. This features multiplicativity versus complete multiplicativity of number theoretic arithmetic functions. The deficiency of not being a Hopf algebra is then cured by introducing an `unrenormal…
We consider two interacting connected graded Hopf algebras, the former being a comodule-coalgebra on the latter. We show how to define analogues of Connes-Kreimer's renormalization group and Beta function, when the graduation operator is replaced by any biderivation coming from an infinitesimal character of the second Hopf algebra.
We introduce normal coordinates on the infinite dimensional group $G$ introduced by Connes and Kreimer in their analysis of the Hopf algebra of rooted trees. We study the primitive elements of the algebra and show that they are generated by a simple application of the inverse Poincaré lemma, given a closed left invariant 1-form on $G$. For the special case of the ladder primitives, we find a second description that relates them to the Hopf algebra of functionals on power series with the usual product. Either approach shows that the ladder primitives are given by the Schur polynomials. The rele…
We extend the results we obtained in an earlier work. The cocommutative case of rooted ladder trees is generalized to a full Hopf algebra of (decorated) rooted trees. For Hopf algebra characters with target space of Rota-Baxter type, the Birkhoff decomposition of renormalization theory is derived by using the Rota-Baxter double construction, respectively Atkinson's theorem. We also outline the extension to the Hopf algebra of Feynman graphs via decorated rooted trees.
We study infinitesimal gauge transformations of an equivariant noncommutative principal bundle as a braided Lie algebra of derivations. For this, we analyse general $K$-braided Hopf and Lie algebras, for $K$ a (quasi)triangular Hopf algebra of symmetries, and study their representations as braided derivations. We then study Drinfeld twist deformations of braided Hopf algebras and of Lie algebras of infinitesimal gauge transformations. We give examples coming from deformations of abelian and Jordanian type. In particular we explicitly describe the braided Lie algebra of gauge transformations of…
It was recently shown that the renormalization of quantum field theory is organized by the Hopf algebra of decorated rooted trees, whose coproduct identifies the divergences requiring subtraction and whose antipode achieves this. We automate this process in a few lines of recursive symbolic code, which deliver a finite renormalized expression for any Feynman diagram. We thus verify a representation of the operator product expansion, which generalizes Chen's lemma for iterated integrals. The subset of diagrams whose forest structure entails a unique primitive subdivergence provides a representa…
We study the perturbative renormalization of quantum gauge theories in the Hopf algebra setup of Connes and Kreimer. It was shown by van Suijlekom (2007) that the quantum counterparts of gauge symmetries -- the so-called Ward--Takahashi and Slavnov--Taylor identities -- correspond to Hopf ideals in the respective renormalization Hopf algebra. We generalize this correspondence to super- and non-renormalizable Quantum Field Theories, extend it to theories with multiple coupling constants and add a discussion on transversality. In particular, this allows us to apply our results to (effective) Qua…
We formulate the Hopf algebraic approach of Connes and Kreimer to renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory using triangular matrix representation. We give a Rota-Baxter anti-homomorphism from general regularized functionals on the Feynman graph Hopf algebra to triangular matrices with entries in a Rota-Baxter algebra. For characters mapping to the group of unipotent triangular matrices we derive the algebraic Birkhoff decomposition for matrices using Spitzer's identity. This simple matrix factorization is applied to characterize and calculate perturbative renormalization.
In the first purpose, we concentrate on the theory of quantum integrable systems underlying the Connes-Kreimer approach. We introduce a new family of Hamiltonian systems depended on the perturbative renormalization process in renormalizable theories. It is observed that the renormalization group can determine an infinite dimensional integrable system such that this fact provides a link between this proposed class of motion integrals and renormalization flow. Moreover, with help of the integral renormalization theorems, we study motion integrals underlying Bogoliubv character and BCH series to …
We propose a topological soliton or instanton solution with nonzero Hopf invariant to the 3+1D non-Abelian gauge theory coupled with scalar fields. This solution, which we call Hopf soliton, represents a spacetime event that makes a $2π$ rotation of the monopole. Although the action of this Hopf soliton is logarithmically divergent, it may still give relevant contributions in a finite-sized system. Since the Chern-Simons term for the unbroken $U(1)$ gauge field may appear in the low energy effective theory, the Hopf soliton may possibly generate fractional statistics for the monopoles.
We generalise gauge theory on a graph so that the gauge group becomes a finite-dimensional ribbon Hopf algebra, the graph becomes a ribbon graph, and gauge-theoretic concepts such as connections, gauge transformations and observables are replaced by linearised analogues. Starting from physical considerations, we derive an axiomatic definition of Hopf-algebra gauge theory, including locality conditions under which the theory for a general ribbon graph can be assembled from local data in the neighbourhood of each vertex. For a vertex neighbourhood with n incoming edge ends, the algebra of non-co…
The subject of this paper are two Hopf algebras which are the non-commutative analogues of two different groups of formal power series. The first group is the set of invertible series with the multiplication, while the second group is the set of formal diffeomorphisms with the composition. The motivation to introduce these Hopf algebras comes from the study of formal series with non-commutative coefficients. Invertible series with non-commutative coefficients still form a group, and we interpret the corresponding new non-commutative Hopf algebra as an alternative to the natural Hopf algebra gi…
Recently, the theory of renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory underwent some exciting new developments. Kreimer discovered an organization of Feynman graphs into combinatorial Hopf algebras. The process of renormalization is captured by a factorization theorem for regularized Hopf algebra characters. In this context the notion of Rota-Baxter algebras enters the scene. We review several aspects of Rota-Baxter algebras as they appear in other sectors also relevant to perturbative renormalization, for instance multiple-zeta-values and matrix differential equations.
``Bonsai'' Hopf algebras, introduced here, are generalizations of Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebras, which are motivated by Feynman diagrams and renormalization. We show that we can find operad structure on the set of bonsais. We introduce a new differential on these bonsai Hopf algebras, which is inspired by the tree differential. The cohomologies of these are computed here, and the relationship of this differential with the appending operation $*$ of Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebras is investigated.
We prove that Kitaev's lattice model for a finite-dimensional semisimple Hopf algebra H is equivalent to the combinatorial quantisation of Chern-Simons theory for the Drinfeld double D(H). This shows that Kitaev models are a special case of the older and more general combinatorial models. This equivalence is an analogue of the relation between Turaev-Viro and Reshetikhin-Turaev TQFTs and relates them to the quantisation of moduli spaces of flat connections. We show that the topological invariants of the two models, the algebra of operators acting on the protected space of the Kitaev model and …
In previous work, starting from the Moyal plane, we formulated interacting theories of matter and gauge fields with only the former fields twisted. In this approach, gauge theories, including the standard model, can be formulated without new gauge degrees of freedom. We show their underlying symmetry algebra to be Poincaré quasi-Hopf . The associated spacetime algebra is hence non-associative.
This paper gives a complete selfcontained proof of our result announced in hep-th/9909126 showing that renormalization in quantum field theory is a special instance of a general mathematical procedure of extraction of finite values based on the Riemann-Hilbert problem. We shall first show that for any quantum field theory, the combinatorics of Feynman graphs gives rise to a Hopf algebra $\Hc$ which is commutative as an algebra. It is the dual Hopf algebra of the envelopping algebra of a Lie algebra $\ud G$ whose basis is labelled by the one particle irreducible Feynman graphs. The Lie bracket …
Two coalgebra structures are used in quantum field theory. The first one is the coalgebra part of a Hopf algebra leading to deformation quantization. The second one is a co-module co-algebra over the first Hopf algebra and it is used to define connected chronological products and renormalization.
We demonstrate that the fundamental algebraic structure underlying the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra -- the insertion pre-Lie structure on graphs -- corresponds directly to the canonical pre-Lie structure of polynomial vector fields. Using this fact, we construct a Hopf algebra built from tensors that is isomorphic to a version of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra that first appeared in the perturbative renormalization of quantum field theories.
Moving beyond the classical additive and multiplicative approaches, we present an "exponential" method for perturbative renormalization. Using Dyson's identity for Green's functions as well as the link between the Faa di Bruno Hopf algebra and the Hopf algebras of Feynman graphs, its relation to the composition of formal power series is analyzed. Eventually, we argue that the new method has several attractive features and encompasses the BPHZ method. The latter can be seen as a special case of the new procedure for renormalization scheme maps with the Rota-Baxter property. To our best knowledg…
We study renormalization in a kinetic scheme using the Hopf algebraic framework, first summarizing and recovering known results in this setting. Then we give a direct combinatorial description of renormalized amplitudes in terms of Mellin transform coefficients, featuring the universal property of rooted trees H_R. In particular, a special class of automorphisms of H_R emerges from the action of changing Mellin transforms on the Hochschild cohomology of perturbation series. Furthermore, we show how the Hopf algebra of polynomials carries a refined renormalization group property, implying its c…
We study gauged Laplacian operators on line bundles on a quantum 2-dimensional sphere. Symmetry under the (co)-action of a quantum group allows for their complete diagonalization. These operators describe `excitations moving on the quantum sphere' in the field of a magnetic monopole. The energies are not invariant under the exchange monopole/antimonopole, that is under inverting the direction of the magnetic field. There are potential applications to models of quantum Hall effect.
Gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions whose gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken to a finite group enjoy a quantum group symmetry which includes the residual gauge symmetry. This symmetry provides a framework in which fundamental excitations (electric charges) and topological excitations (magnetic fluxes) can be treated on equal footing. In order to study symmetry breaking by both electric and magnetic condensates we develop a theory of symmetry breaking which is applicable to models whose symmetry is described by a quantum group (quasitriangular Hopf algebra). Using this general framework we inv…
This paper provides a primer in quantum field theory (QFT) based on Hopf algebra and describes new Hopf algebraic constructions inspired by QFT concepts. The following QFT concepts are introduced: chronological products, S-matrix, Feynman diagrams, connected diagrams, Green functions, renormalization. The use of Hopf algebra for their definition allows for simple recursive derivations and lead to a correspondence between Feynman diagrams and semi-standard Young tableaux. Reciprocally, these concepts are used as models to derive Hopf algebraic constructions such as a connected coregular action …
We give a simple presentation of the combinatorics of renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory in terms of triangular matrices. The prescription, that may be of calculational value, is derived from first principles, to wit, the ``Birkhoff decomposition'' in the Hopf-algebraic description of renormalization by Connes and Kreimer.
This paper aims at presenting the first steps towards a formulation of the Exact Renormalization Group Equation in the Hopf algebra setting of Connes and Kreimer. It mostly deals with some algebraic preliminaries allowing to formulate perturbative renormalization within the theory of differential equations. The relation between renormalization, formulated as a change of boundary condition for a differential equation, and an algebraic Birkhoff decomposition for rooted trees is explicited.
We study noncommutative principal bundles (Hopf-Galois extensions) in the context of coquasitriangular Hopf algebras and their monoidal category of comodule algebras. When the total space is quasi-commutative, and thus the base space subalgebra is central, we define the gauge group as the group of vertical automorphisms or equivalently as the group of equivariant algebra maps. We study Drinfeld twist (2-cocycle) deformations of Hopf-Galois extensions and show that the gauge group of the twisted extension is isomorphic to the gauge group of the initial extension. In particular, noncommutative p…
We study the perturbative quantization of gauge theories and gravity. Our investigations start with the geometry of spacetimes and particle fields. Then we discuss the various Lagrange densities of (effective) Quantum General Relativity coupled to the Standard Model. In addition, we study the corresponding BRST double complex of diffeomorphisms and gauge transformations. Next we apply Connes--Kreimer renormalization theory to the perturbative Feynman graph expansion: In this framework, subdivergences are organized via the coproduct of a Hopf algebra and the renormalization operation is describ…
The paper aims at investigating perturbative quantum field theory (pQFT) in the approach of Epstein and Glaser (EG) and, in particular, its formulation in the language of graphs and Hopf algebras (HAs). Various HAs are encountered, each one associated with a special combination of physical concepts such as normalization, localization, pseudo-unitarity, causality and an associated regularization, and renormalization. The algebraic structures, representing the perturbative expansion of the S-matrix, are imposed on the operator-valued distributions which are equipped with appropriate graph indice…
The gauge dependence problem of alternative flow equation for the functional renormalization group is studied. It is shown that the effective two-particle irreducible effective action depends on gauges at any value of IR parameter $k$. The situation with gauge dependence is similar to the standard formulation based on the effective one-particle irreducible effective action.
We discuss the prominence of Hopf algebras in recent progress in Quantum Field Theory. In particular, we will consider the Hopf algebra of renormalization, whose antipode turned out to be the key to a conceptual understanding of the subtraction procedure. We shall then describe several occurences of this or closely related Hopf algebras in other mathematical domains, such as foliations, Runge Kutta methods, iterated integrals and multiple zeta values. We emphasize the unifying role which the Butcher group, discovered in the study of numerical integration of ordinary differential equations, pla…
As a natural basis of the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, monomial quasisymmetric functions are formal power series defined from compositions. The same definition applies to left weak compositions, while leads to divergence for other weak compositions. We adapt the method of renormalization in quantum field theory, in the framework of Connes and Kreimer, to deal with such divergency. This approach defines monomial quasisymmetric functions for any weak composition as power series while extending the quasi-shuffle (stuffle) relation satisfied by the usual quasisymmetric functions. The …
The Hopf algebra and the Rota-Baxter algebra are the two algebraic structures underlying the algebraic approach of Connes and Kreimer to renormalization of perturbative quantum field theory. In particular the Hopf algebra of rooted trees serves as the "baby model" of Feynman graphs in their approach and can be characterized by certain universal properties involving a Hochschild 1-cocycle. Decorated rooted trees have also been applied to study Feynman graphs. We will continue the study of universal properties of various spaces of decorated rooted trees with such a 1-cocycle, leading to the conc…
