We introduce the two user finite state compound Gaussian interference channel and characterize its capacity region to within one bit. The main contributions involve both novel inner and outer bounds. The inner bound is multilevel superposition coding, but the decoding of the levels is opportunistic, depending on the channel state. The genie aided outer bound is motivated by the typical error events of the achievable scheme.
In a K-user Gaussian interference channel, it has been shown by Geng et al. that if for each user the desired signal strength is no less than the sum of the strengths of the strongest interference from this user and the strongest interference to this user (all values in dB scale), then power control and treating interference as noise (TIN) is optimal from the perspective of generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) and achieves the entire channel capacity region to within a constant gap. In this work, we generalize the optimality of TIN to compound networks. We show that for a K-user compound Gaus…
In this paper, we characterize the capacity region for the two-user linear Gaussian compound Multiple Access Channel with common message (MACC) and with intersymbol interference (ISI) under an input power constraint. The region is obtained by converting the channel to its equivalent memoryless one by defining an n-block memoryless circular Gaussian compound MACC model and applying the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to decompose the n-block channel into a set of independent parallel channels whose capacities can be found easily. Indeed, the capacity region of the original Gaussian compound MA…
The problem of resource allocation is studied for two-sender two-receiver fading Gaussian interference channels (IFCs) and compound multiaccess channels (C-MACs). The senders in an IFC communicate with their own receiver (unicast) while those in a C-MAC communicate with both receivers (multicast). The instantaneous fading state between every transmit-receive pair in this network is assumed to be known at all transmitters and receivers. Under an average power constraint at each source, the sum-capacity of the C-MAC and the power policy that achieves this capacity is developed. The conditions de…
This work investigates the general two-user Compound Broadcast Channel (BC) where an encoder wishes to transmit common and private messages to two receivers while being oblivious to two possible channel realizations controlling the communication. The focus is on the characterization of the largest achievable rate region by resorting to more evolved encoding and decoding techniques than the conventional coding for the standard BC. The role of the decoder is first explored, and an achievable rate region is derived based on the principle of "Interference Decoding" (ID) where each receiver decodes…
This paper presents a generalized closed-form beamforming technique that can achieve the maximum degrees of freedom in compounded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channels with mixed classes of multiple-antenna users. The contribution is firstly described within the context of a three-cell network and later extended to the general multi-cell scenario where we also show how to determine the conditions required to align the interference in a subspace that is orthogonal to the one reserved for the desired signals. This is then followed by an analysis of the impact of antenna correl…
A simple encoding scheme based on Sato's non-naïve frequency division is proposed for a class of Gaussian interference channels with mixed interference. The achievable region is shown to be equivalent to that of Costa's noiseberg region for the onesided Gaussian interference channel. This allows for an indirect proof that this simple achievable rate region is indeed equivalent to the Han-Kobayashi (HK) region with Gaussian input and with time sharing for this class of Gaussian interference channels with mixed interference.
An interference channel is said to have strong interference if for all input distributions, the receivers can fully decode the interference. This definition of strong interference applies to discrete memoryless, scalar and vector Gaussian interference channels. However, there exist vector Gaussian interference channels that may not satisfy the strong interference condition but for which the capacity can still be achieved by jointly decoding the signal and the interference. This kind of interference is called generally strong interference. Sufficient conditions for a vector Gaussian interferenc…
The capacity regions of vector, or multiple-input multiple-output, Gaussian interference channels are established for very strong interference and aligned strong interference. Furthermore, the sum-rate capacities are established for Z interference, noisy interference, and mixed (aligned weak/intermediate and aligned strong) interference. These results generalize known results for scalar Gaussian interference channels.
We study a wiretap channel model where the sender has $M$ transmit antennas and there are two groups consisting of $J_1$ and $J_2$ receivers respectively. Each receiver has a single antenna. We consider two scenarios. First we consider the compound wiretap model -- group 1 constitutes the set of legitimate receivers, all interested in a common message, whereas group 2 is the set of eavesdroppers. We establish new lower and upper bounds on the secure degrees of freedom. Our lower bound is based on the recently proposed \emph{real interference alignment} scheme. The upper bound provides the firs…
New upper bounds on the sum capacity of the two-user Gaussian interference channel are derived. Using these bounds, it is shown that treating interference as noise achieves the sum capacity if the interference levels are below certain thresholds.
New sufficient conditions for a vector Gaussian interference channel to achieve the sum-rate capacity by treating interference as noise are derived, which generalize the existing results. More concise conditions for multiple-input-single-output, and single-input-multiple-output scenarios are obtained.
Establishing the capacity region of a Gaussian interference network is an open problem in information theory. Recent progress on this problem has led to the characterization of the capacity region of a general two user Gaussian interference channel within one bit. In this paper, we develop new, improved outer bounds on the capacity region. Using these bounds, we show that treating interference as noise achieves the sum capacity of the two user Gaussian interference channel in a low interference regime, where the interference parameters are below certain thresholds. We then generalize our techn…
We consider the 3-user Gaussian interference channel and provide an outer bound on its capacity region. Under some conditions, which we call the mixed strong-very strong interference conditions, this outer bound is achievable. These conditions correspond to the case where at each receiver, one transmitter is causing strong interference and the other is causing very strong interference. Therefore, we characterize the capacity region of the 3-user interference channel with mixed strong-very strong interference.
The capacity region of the one-sided Gaussian interference channel is established in the weak interference regime. To characterize this region, a new representation of the Han-Kobayashi inner bound for the one-sided Gaussian interference channel is first given. Next, a new outer bound on the capacity region of this channel is introduced which is tight in the weak interference regime. This is the first capacity region for any variant of the interference channel in the weak interference regime.
The Han-Kobayashi (HK) scheme achieves the best known achievable rate region for the K user interference channel (IC). Simple HK schemes are HK schemes with Gaussian signaling, no time sharing, and no private-common power splitting. The class of simple HK schemes includes the treating interference as noise (TIN) scheme and schemes that involve various levels of interference decoding and cancellation at each receiver. We derive conditions under which simple HK schemes achieve sum capacity for general K user Gaussian ICs. These results generalize existing sum capacity results for the TIN scheme …
In this work, we prove that a positive secure degree of freedom is achievable for a large class of Gaussian channels as long as the channel is not degraded and the channel is fully connected. This class includes the MAC wire-tap channel, the 2-user interference channel with confidential messages, the 2-user interference channel with an external eavesdropper. Best known achievable schemes to date for these channels use Gaussian signaling. In this work, we show that structured codes outperform Gaussian random codes at high SNR when channel gains are real numbers.
A new outer bound on the capacity region of Gaussian interference channels is developed. The bound combines and improves existing genie-aided methods and is shown to give the sum-rate capacity for noisy interference as defined in this paper. Specifically, it is shown that if the channel coefficients and power constraints satisfy a simple condition then single-user detection at each receiver is sum-rate optimal, i.e., treating the interference as noise incurs no loss in performance. This is the first concrete (finite signal-to-noise ratio) capacity result for the Gaussian interference channel w…
The sum-rate capacity of the parallel Gaussian interference channel is shown to be achieved by independent transmission across sub-channels and treating interference as noise in each sub-channel if the channel coefficients and power constraints satisfy a certain condition. The condition requires the interference to be weak, a situation commonly encountered in, e.g., digital subscriber line transmission. The optimal power allocation is characterized by using the concavity of sum-rate capacity as a function of the power constraints.
We consider interference alignment (IA) over K-user Gaussian MIMO interference channel (MIMO-IC) when the SNR is not asymptotically high. We introduce a generalization of IA which enables receive diversity inside the interference-free subspace. We generalize the existence criterion of an IA solution proposed by Yetis et al. to this case, thereby establishing a multi-user diversity-multiplexing trade-off (DMT) for the interference channel. Furthermore, we derive a closed-form tight lower-bound for the ergodic mutual information achievable using IA over a Gaussian MIMO-IC with Gaussian i.i.d. ch…
This paper studies a symmetric K user Gaussian interference channel with K transmitters and K receivers. A "very strong" interference regime is derived for this channel setup. A "very strong" interference regime is one where the capacity region of the interference channel is the same as the capacity region of the channel with no interference. In this regime, the interference can be perfectly canceled by all the receivers without incurring any rate penalties. A "very strong" interference condition for an example symmetric K user deterministic interference channel is also presented.
Recent outer bounds on the capacity region of Gaussian interference channels are generalized to $m$-user channels with $m>2$ and asymmetric powers and crosstalk coefficients. The bounds are again shown to give the sum-rate capacity for Gaussian interference channels with low powers and crosstalk coefficients. The capacity is achieved by using single-user detection at each receiver, i.e., treating the interference as noise incurs no loss in performance.
A $K$-user cascade Gaussian Z-interference channel is a subclass of the general $K$-user Gaussian interference channel, where each user, except the first one, experiences interference only from the previous user. Under simple Han-Kobayashi schemes assuming Gaussian inputs and no time sharing, it is shown that the maximum sum rate is achieved by each user transmitting either common or private signals. For K=3, channel conditions under which the achieved sum rate is either equal to or within 0.5 bits to the sum capacity are identified.
This paper considers reliable communications over a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian channel, where the channel matrix is within a bounded channel uncertainty region around a nominal channel matrix, i.e., an instance of the compound MIMO Gaussian channel. We study the optimal transmit covariance matrix design to achieve the capacity of compound MIMO Gaussian channels, where the channel uncertainty region is characterized by the spectral norm. This design problem is a challenging non-convex optimization problem. However, in this paper, we reveal that this problem has a hidden conv…
This work proposes a novel outer bound for the Gaussian cognitive interference channel in strong interference at the primary receiver based on the capacity of a multi-antenna broadcast channel with degraded message set. It then shows that for the Z-channel, i.e., when the secondary receiver experiences no interference and the primary receiver experiences strong interference, the proposed outer bound not only is the tightest among known bounds but is actually achievable for sufficiently strong interference. The latter is a novel capacity result that from numerical evaluations appears to be gene…
The detection problem in the Gaussian interference channel is addressed, when transmitters employ non-Gaussian schemes designed for the single-user Gaussian channel. A structure consisting of a separate symbol-by-symbol detector and a hard decoder is considered. Given this structure, an optimal detector is presented that is compared to an interferenceunaware conventional detector, an interference-aware successive interference cancellation (SIC) detector, and a minimum-distance detector. It is demonstrated analytically and by simulation that the optimal detector outperforms both the conventiona…
Multiple-antenna broadcast channels with $M$ transmit antennas and $K$ single-antenna receivers is considered, where the channel of receiver $r$ takes one of the $J_r$ finite values. It is assumed that the channel states of each receiver are randomly selected from $\mathds{R}^{M\times 1}$ (or from $\mathds{C}^{M\times 1}$). It is shown that no matter what $J_r$ is, the degrees of freedom (DoF) of $\frac{MK}{M+K-1}$ is achievable. The achievable scheme relies on the idea of interference alignment at receivers, without exploiting the possibility of cooperation among transmit antennas. It is prov…
We study the interaction between two interfering Gaussian 2-user multiple access channels. The capacity region is characterized under mixed strong--extremely strong interference and individually very strong interference. Furthermore, the sum capacity is derived under a less restricting definition of very strong interference. Finally, a general upper bound on the sum capacity is provided, which is nearly tight for weak cross links.
We consider symmetric two-user Gaussian interference channel with common messages. We derive an upper bound on the sum capacity, and show that the upper bound is tight in the low interference regime, where the optimal transmission scheme is to send no common messages and each receiver treats interference as noise. Our result shows that although the availability of common messages provides a cooperation opportunity for transmitters, in the low interference regime the presence of common messages does not help increase the sum capacity.
The corner points of the capacity region of the two-user Gaussian interference channel under strong or weak interference are determined using the notions of almost Gaussian random vectors, almost lossless addition of random vectors, and almost linearly dependent random vectors. In particular, the "missing" corner point problem is solved in a manner that differs from previous works in that it avoids the use of integration over a continuum of SNR values or of Monge-Kantorovitch transportation problems.
Recently, Etkin, Tse, and Wang found the capacity region of the two-user Gaussian interference channel to within one bit/s/Hz. A natural goal is to apply this approach to the Gaussian interference channel with an arbitrary number of users. We make progress towards this goal by finding the capacity region of the many-to-one and one-to-many Gaussian interference channels to within a constant number of bits. The result makes use of a deterministic model to provide insight into the Gaussian channel. The deterministic model makes explicit the dimension of signal scale. A central theme emerges: the …
The aim of this paper is to study the achievable rates for a $K$ user Gaussian interference channels for any SNR using a combination of lattice and algebraic codes. Lattice codes are first used to transform the Gaussian interference channel (G-IFC) into a discrete input-output noiseless channel, and subsequently algebraic codes are developed to achieve good rates over this new alphabet. In this context, a quantity called efficiency is introduced which reflects the effectiveness of the algebraic coding strategy. The paper first addresses the problem of finding high efficiency algebraic codes. A…
The paper studies a class of three user Gaussian interference channels. A new layered lattice coding scheme is introduced as a transmission strategy. The use of lattice codes allows for an "alignment" of the interference observed at each receiver. The layered lattice coding is shown to achieve more than one degree of freedom for a class of interference channels and also achieves rates which are better than the rates obtained using the Han-Kobayashi coding scheme.
This work considers communication over Gaussian interference channels with processing energy cost, which explicitly takes into account the energy expended for processing when transmitters are on. In the presence of processing energy cost, transmitting all the time as in the conventional no-cost case is no longer optimal. For a two-user Gaussian interference channel with processing energy cost, assuming that the on-off states of transmitters are not utilized for signaling, several transmission schemes with varying complexities are proposed and their sum rates are compared with an interference-f…
The cognitive interference channel models cognitive overlay radio systems, where cognitive radios overhear the transmission of neighboring nodes. Capacity for this channel is not known in general. For the Gaussian case capacity is known in three regimes, usually denoted as the "weak interference", "very strong interference" and "primary decodes cognitive". This paper provides a new capacity result, based on rate-splitting of the primary user's message into a public and private part and that generalizes the capacity results in the "very strong interference" and "primary decodes cognitive" regim…
Strong secrecy capacity of compound wiretap channels is studied. The known lower bounds for the secrecy capacity of compound finite-state memoryless channels under discrete alphabets are extended to arbitrary uncertainty sets and continuous alphabets under the strong secrecy criterion. The conditions under which these bounds are tight are given. Under the saddle-point condition, the compound secrecy capacity is shown to be equal to that of the worst-case channel. Based on this, the compound Gaussian MIMO wiretap channel is studied under the spectral norm constraint and without the degradedness…
This paper is motivated by a sensor network on a correlated field where nearby sensors share information, and can thus assist rather than interfere with one another. We consider a special class of two-user Gaussian interference channels (IFCs) where one of the two transmitters knows both the messages to be conveyed to the two receivers. Both achievability and converse arguments are provided for a channel with Gaussian inputs and Gaussian noise when the interference is weaker than the direct link (a so called weak IFC). In general, this region serves as an outer bound on the capacity of weak IF…
This work considers a Gaussian interference channel with processing energy cost, which explicitly takes into account the energy expended for processing when each transmitter is on. With processing overhead, bursty transmission at each transmitter generally becomes more advantageous. Assuming on-off states do not carry information, for a two-user Z-interference channel, the new regime of very strong interference is identified and shown to be enlarged compared with the conventional one. With the interfered receiver listening when its own transmitter is silent, for a wide range of cross-link powe…
This paper studies the capacity region of a $K$-user cyclic Gaussian interference channel, where the $k$th user interferes with only the $(k-1)$th user (mod $K$) in the network. Inspired by the work of Etkin, Tse and Wang, which derived a capacity region outer bound for the two-user Gaussian interference channel and proved that a simple Han-Kobayashi power splitting scheme can achieve to within one bit of the capacity region for all values of channel parameters, this paper shows that a similar strategy also achieves the capacity region for the $K$-user cyclic interference channel to within a c…
The separability in parallel Gaussian interference channels (PGICs) is studied in this paper. We generalize the separability results in one-sided PGICs (OPGICs) by Sung \emph{et al.} to two-sided PGICs (TPGICs). Specifically, for strong and mixed TPGICs, we show necessary and sufficient conditions for the separability. For this, we show diagonal covariance matrices are sum-rate optimal for strong and mixed TPGICs.
Using Gaussian inputs and treating interference as noise at the receivers has recently been shown to be sum capacity achieving for the two-user single-input single-output (SISO) Gaussian interference channel in a low interference regime, where the interference levels are below certain thresholds. In this paper, such a low interference regime is characterized for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channels. Conditions are provided on the direct and cross channel gain matrices under which using Gaussian inputs and treating interference as noise at the receivers is sum ca…
This paper adds to the understanding of the capacity region of the Gaussian interference channel. To this end, the capacity region of the one-sided Gaussian interference channel is first fully characterized. This is accomplished by introducing a new representation of the Han-Kobayashi region and providing a new outer bound on the capacity region of this channel which is tight both in the weak and strong interference regimes. In light of this capacity result, the capacity region of the degraded Gaussian interference channel is established immediately. Next, by combining the capacity regions of …
We consider a dense $K$ user Gaussian interference network formed by paired transmitters and receivers placed independently at random in a fixed spatial region. Under natural conditions on the node position distributions and signal attenuation, we prove convergence in probability of the average per-user capacity $\csum/K$ to $\half \ep \log(1 + 2 \SNR)$. The achievability result follows directly from results based on an interference alignment scheme presented in recent work of Nazer et al. Our main contribution comes through an upper bound, motivated by ideas of `bottleneck capacity' developed…
This paper studies the achievable rates of Gaussian interference channels with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), when improper or circularly asymmetric complex Gaussian signaling is applied. For the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output interference channel (MIMO-IC) with the interference treated as Gaussian noise, we show that the user's achievable rate can be expressed as a summation of the rate achievable by the conventional proper or circularly symmetric complex Gaussian signaling in terms of the users' transmit covariance matrices, and an additional term, which is a function of both…
This paper studies a Gaussian Z-interference channel with a rate-limited digital relay link from one receiver to another. Achievable rate regions are derived based on a combination of Han-Kobayashi common-private information splitting technique and several different relay strategies including compress-and-forward and a partial decode-and-forward strategy, in which the interference is partially decoded then binned and forwarded through the digital link for subtraction at the other end. For the Gaussian Z-interference channel with a digital link from the interference-free receiver to the interfe…
We consider the information-theoretic optimality of treating inter-cell interference as noise in downlink cellular networks modeled as Gaussian interfering broadcast channels. Establishing a new uplink-downlink duality, we cast the problem in Gaussian interfering broadcast channels to that in Gaussian interfering multiple access channels, and characterize an achievable GDoF region under power control and treating inter-cell interference as (Gaussian) noise. We then identify conditions under which this achievable GDoF region is optimal.
This paper explores the two-user Gaussian interference channel through the lens of a natural deterministic channel model. The main result is that the deterministic channel uniformly approximates the Gaussian channel, the capacity regions differing by a universal constant. The problem of finding the capacity of the Gaussian channel to within a constant error is therefore reduced to that of finding the capacity of the far simpler deterministic channel. Thus, the paper provides an alternative derivation of the recent constant gap capacity characterization of Etkin, Tse, and Wang. Additionally, th…
In this paper we study a Gaussian relay-interference network, in which relay (helper) nodes are to facilitate competing information flows over a wireless network. We focus on a two-stage relay-interference network where there are weak cross-links, causing the networks to behave like a chain of Z Gaussian channels. For these Gaussian ZZ and ZS networks, we establish an approximate characterization of the rate region. The outer bounds to the capacity region are established using genie-aided techniques that yield bounds sharper than the traditional cut-set outer bounds. For the inner bound of the…
We consider a dense n-user Gaussian interference network formed by paired transmitters and receivers placed independently at random in Euclidean space. Under natural conditions on the node position distributions and signal attenuation, we prove convergence in probability of the average per-user capacity C_Sigma/n to 1/2 E log(1 + 2SNR). The achievability result follows directly from results based on an interference alignment scheme presented in recent work of Nazer et al. Our main contribution comes through the converse result, motivated by ideas of `bottleneck links' developed in recent work …
This paper considers a distributed interference avoidance problem employing frequency assignment in the Gaussian interference channel (IC). We divide the common channel into several subchannels and each user chooses the subchannel with less amount of interference from other users as the transmit channel. This mechanism named interference avoidance in this paper can be modeled as a competitive game model. And a completely autonomous distributed iterative algorithm called Tdistributed interference avoidance algorithm (DIA) is adopted to achieve the Nash equilibriumT (NE) of the game. Due to the …
This paper derives an outer bound on the capacity region of a general memoryless interference channel with an arbitrary number of users. The derivation follows from a generalization of the techniques developed by Kramer and by Etkin et al for the Gaussian two-user channel. The derived bound is the first known outer bound valid for any memoryless channel. In Gaussian noise, classes of channels for which the proposed bound gives the sum-rate capacity are identified, including degraded channels and a class of Z-channels.
We obtain new sum capacity results for the Gaussian many-to-one and one-to-many interference channels in channel parameter regimes where the sum capacity was known only up to a constant gap. Simple Han-Kobayashi (HK) schemes, i.e., HK schemes with Gaussian signaling, no time-sharing, and no common-private power splitting, achieve sum capacity under the channel conditions for which the new results are obtained. To obtain sum capacity results, we show that genie-aided upper bounds match the achievable sum rate of simple HK schemes under certain channel conditions.
We investigate how to exploit intermittent feedback for interference management by studying the two-user Gaussian interference channel (IC). We approximately characterize (within a universal constant) the capacity region for the Gaussian IC with intermittent feedback. We exactly characterize the the capacity region of the linear deterministic version of the problem, which gives us insight into the Gaussian problem. We find that the characterization only depends on the forward channel parameters and the marginal probability distribution of each feedback link. The result shows that passive and u…
It has been shown recently by Geng et al. that in a $K$ user Gaussian interference network, if for each user the desired signal strength is no less than the sum of the strengths of the strongest interference from this user and the strongest interference to this user (all signal strengths measured in dB scale), then power control and treating interference as noise (TIN) is sufficient to achieve the entire generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) region. Motivated by the intuition that the deterministic model of Avestimehr et al. (ADT deterministic model) is particularly suited for exploring the op…
The capacity regions of multiple-input multiple-output Gaussian Z-interference channels are established for the very strong interference and aligned strong interference cases. The sum-rate capacity of such channels is established under noisy interference. These results generalize known results for scalar Gaussian Z-interference channels.
This paper studies the capacity region of a $K$-user cyclic Gaussian interference channel, where the $k$th user interferes with only the $(k-1)$th user (mod $K$) in the network. Inspired by the work of Etkin, Tse and Wang, who derived a capacity region outer bound for the two-user Gaussian interference channel and proved that a simple Han-Kobayashi power splitting scheme can achieve to within one bit of the capacity region for all values of channel parameters, this paper shows that a similar strategy also achieves the capacity region of the $K$-user cyclic interference channel to within a cons…
This paper studies a family of genie-MAC (multiple access channel) outer bounds for K-user Gaussian interference channels. This family is inspired by existing genie-aided bounding mechanisms, but differs from current approaches in its optimization problem formulation and application. The fundamental idea behind these bounds is to create a group of genie receivers that form multiple access channels that can decode a subset of the original interference channel's messages. The MAC sum capacity of each of the genie receivers provides an outer bound on the sum of rates for this subset. The genie-MA…
We consider a secure communication scenario through the two-user Gaussian interference channel: each transmitter (user) has a confidential message to send reliably to its intended receiver while keeping it secret from the other receiver. Prior work investigated the performance of two different approaches for this scenario; i.i.d. Gaussian random codes and real alignment of structured codes. While the latter achieves the optimal sum secure degrees of freedom (s.d.o.f.), its extension to finite SNR regimes is challenging. In this paper, we propose a new achievability scheme for the weak and the …
In this paper, two-user Gaussian interference channel(GIC) is revisited with the objective of developing implementable (explicit) channel codes. Specifically, low density parity check (LDPC) codes are adopted for use over these channels, and their benefits are studied. Different scenarios on the level of interference are considered. In particular, for strong interference channel examples with binary phase shift keying (BPSK), it is demonstrated that rates better than those offered by single user codes with time sharing are achievable. Promising results are also observed with quadrature-shift-k…
