The problem of resource allocation is studied for two-sender two-receiver fading Gaussian interference channels (IFCs) and compound multiaccess channels (C-MACs). The senders in an IFC communicate with their own receiver (unicast) while those in a C-MAC communicate with both receivers (multicast). The instantaneous fading state between every transmit-receive pair in this network is assumed to be known at all transmitters and receivers. Under an average power constraint at each source, the sum-capacity of the C-MAC and the power policy that achieves this capacity is developed. The conditions defining the classes of strong and very strong ergodic IFCs are presented and the multicast sum-capacity is shown to be tight for both classes.
A modification is proposed for the formula known from the literature that characterizes the boundary of the capacity region of Gaussian multiaccess fading channels. The modified version takes into account potentially negative arguments of the cumulated density function that would affect the accuracy of the numerical capacity results.
The problem of optimal resource allocation is studied for ergodic fading orthogonal multiaccess relay channels (MARCs) in which the users (sources) communicate with a destination with the aid of a half-duplex relay that transmits on a channel orthogonal to that used by the transmitting sources. Under the assumption that the instantaneous fading state information is available at all nodes, the maximum sum-rate and the optimal user and relay power allocations (policies) are developed for a decode-and-forward (DF) relay. With the observation that a DF relay results in two multiaccess channels, on…
The problem of resource allocation is studied for a two-user fading orthogonal multiaccess relay channel (MARC) where both users (sources) communicate with a destination in the presence of a relay. A half-duplex relay is considered that transmits on a channel orthogonal to that used by the sources. The instantaneous fading state between every transmit-receive pair in this network is assumed to be known at both the transmitter and receiver. Under an average power constraint at each source and the relay, the sum-rate for the achievable strategy of decode-and-forward (DF) is maximized over all po…
A broadcast strategy for multiple access communication over slowly fading channels is introduced, in which the channel state information is known to only the receiver. In this strategy, the transmitters split their information streams into multiple independent information streams, each adapted to a specific actual channel realization. The major distinction between the proposed strategy and the existing ones is that in the existing approaches, each transmitter adapts its transmission strategy only to the fading process of its direct channel to the receiver, hence directly adopting a single-user…
The Dynamic Decode-and-Forward (DDF) protocol and the Hybrid DDF and Amplified-and-Forward (HDAF) protocol for the multiple-access relay channel (MARC) with quasi static fading are evaluated using the Zheng-Tse diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT). We assume that there are two users, one half-duplex relay, and a common destination, each equipped with single antenna. For the Rayleigh fading, the DDF protocol is well known and has been analyzed in terms of the DMT with infinite block length. By carefully dealing with properties specific to finite block length, we characterize the finite block l…
In a heterogeneous unreliable multiaccess network, wherein terminals share a common wireless channel with distinctive error probabilities, existing works have showed that a persistent round-robin (RR-P) scheduling policy (i.e., greedy policy) can be arbitrarily worse than the optimum in terms of Age of Information (AoI) under standard Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ), and one must resort to Whittle's index approach for optimal AoI. In this paper, practical Hybrid ARQ (HARQ) schemes which are widely-used in today's wireless networks are considered. We show that RR-P is very close to optimum with …
The ergodic capacity of underlay cognitive (secondary) dual-hop relaying systems is analytically investigated. Specifically, the amplify-and-forward transmission protocol is considered, while the received signals undergo multipath fading and shadowing with non-identical statistics. To efficiently describe this composite type of fading, the well-known generalized-$K$ fading model is used. New analytical expressions and quite accurate closed-form approximations regarding the ergodic capacity of the end-to-end communication are obtained, in terms of finite sum series of the Meijer's-$G$ function.…
The sum-capacity for specific sub-classes of ergodic fading Gaussian two-user interference channels (IFCs) is developed under the assumption of perfect channel state information at all transmitters and receivers. For the sub-classes of uniformly strong (every fading state is strong) and ergodic very strong two-sided IFCs (a mix of strong and weak fading states satisfying specific fading averaged conditions) the optimality of completely decoding the interference, i.e., converting the IFC to a compound multiple access channel (C-MAC), is proved. It is also shown that this capacity-achieving sche…
Sufficient conditions required to achieve the interference-free capacity region of ergodic fading K-user interference channels (IFCs) are obtained. In particular, this capacity region is shown to be achieved when every receiver decodes all K transmitted messages such that the channel statistics and the waterfilling power policies for all K (interference-free) links satisfy a set of K(K-1) ergodic very strong conditions. The result is also of independent interest in combinatorics.
This paper addresses point-to-point communication over block-fading channels with independent fading blocks. When both channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and receiver (CSIR) are available, most achievable schemes use separable coding, i.e., coding independently and in parallel over different fading states. Unfortunately, separable coding has drawbacks including large memory requirements at both communication ends. In this paper a lattice coding and decoding scheme is proposed that achieves the ergodic capacity without separable coding, with lattice codebooks and decoding decis…
We consider a fading AWGN 2-user 2-hop network where the channel coefficients are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) drawn from a continuous distribution and vary over time. For a broad class of channel distributions, we characterize the ergodic sum capacity to within a constant number of bits/sec/Hz, independent of signal-to-noise ratio. The achievability follows from the analysis of an interference neutralization scheme where the relays are partitioned into $M$ pairs, and interference is neutralized separately by each pair of relays. When $M=1$, the proposed ergodic interferenc…
The stability of scheduled multiaccess communication with random coding and independent decoding of messages is investigated. The number of messages that may be scheduled for simultaneous transmission is limited to a given maximum value, and the channels from transmitters to receiver are quasi-static, flat, and have independent fades. Requests for message transmissions are assumed to arrive according to an i.i.d. arrival process. Then, we show the following: (1) in the limit of large message alphabet size, the stability region has an interference limited information-theoretic capacity interpre…
In multi-(core/mode) optical fiber communication, the transmission channel can be modeled as a complex sub-matrix of the Haar-distributed unitary matrix (complex Jacobi unitary ensemble). In this letter, we present new analytical expressions of the upper and lower bounds for the ergodic capacity of multiple-input multiple-output Jacobi-fading channels. Recent results on the determinant of the Jacobi unitary ensemble are employed to derive a tight lower bound on the ergodic capacity. We use Jensen's inequality to provide an analytical closed-form upper bound to the ergodic capacity at any signa…
A new stochastic order between two fading distributions is introduced. A fading channel dominates another in the ergodic capacity ordering sense, if the Shannon transform of the first is greater than that of the second at all values of average signal to noise ratio. It is shown that some parametric fading models such as the Nakagami-m, Rician, and Hoyt are distributions that are monotonic in their line of sight parameters with respect to the ergodic capacity order. Some operations under which the ergodic capacity order is preserved are also discussed. Through these properties of the ergodic ca…
This paper determines the optimum secondary user power allocation and ergodic multicast rate of point-to-multipoint communication in a cognitive radio network in the presence of outage constraints for the primary users. Using tools from extreme value theory (EVT), it is first proved that the limiting distribution of the minimum of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) random variables (RVs) is a Weibull distribution, when the user signal and the interferer signals undergo independent and non-identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) $κ-μ$ shadowed fading.…
A relationship between the growth-rate of logoptimal portfolios and capacity of fading single-input multiple output (SIMO) channels are established. Using this relation, stock vector stochastic processes that model the investment environments are stochastically ordered using different criteria. The presence of side information (SI) is considered, and a bound on the gains in the growth-rate due to SI is derived along with data processing inequality and convexity properties. A statistical test on the usefulness of SI that does not require the computation of the optimal portfolio vector in the pr…
In this paper we introduce a novel performance analysis of the $η$-$μ$ generalized radio fading channels with integer value of the $μ$ fading parameter, i.e. with even number of multipath clusters. This fading model includes other fading models as special cases such as the Nakagami-m, the Hoyt, and the Rayleigh. We obtain novel unified and generic simple closed-form expressions for the average bit error rates and ergodic channel capacity in the additive white generalized Gaussian noise (AWGGN), which includes the additive Gaussian, the gamma, the Laplacian, and the impulsive noise as special c…
Effective capacity, which provides the maximum constant arrival rate that a given service process can support while satisfying statistical delay constraints, is analyzed in a multiuser scenario. In particular, we study the achievable effective capacity region of the users in multiaccess fading channels (MAC) in the presence of quality of service (QoS) constraints. We assume that channel side information (CSI) is available at both the transmitters and the receiver, and superposition coding technique with successive decoding is used. When the power is fixed at the transmitters, we show that vary…
The research analyzes the problem of capacity analysis of the multi-user massive multi-input multi-output systems with a banded correlation model. The presented study impacts the analytical statistical description with closed form expression of the ergodic sum-rate capacity of the system functioning in presence of multipath fading channel with complex Nakagami-m statistics of the complex transmission coefficients. Numerical verification of the derived expressions was performed and demonstrated excellent correspondence with simulation. The research demonstrated that the system correlation matri…
We study the ergodic capacity of a frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channel with correlated scattering, which finds application in the area of UWB. Under an average power constraint, we consider a single-user, single-antenna transmission. Coherent reception is assumed with full CSI at the receiver and no CSI at the transmitter. We distinguish between a continuous- and a discrete-time channel, modeled either as random process or random vector with generic covariance. As a practically relevant example, we examine an exponentially attenuated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process in detail. Finally, we gi…
This paper studies the information-theoretic limits of a secondary or cognitive radio (CR) network under spectrum sharing with an existing primary radio network. In particular, the fading cognitive multiple-access channel (C-MAC) is first studied, where multiple secondary users transmit to the secondary base station (BS) under both individual transmit-power constraints and a set of interference-power constraints each applied at one of the primary receivers. This paper considers the long-term (LT) or the short-term (ST) transmit-power constraint over the fading states at each secondary transmit…
In this paper, we consider a two-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying system, where the relay node is energy-constrained and harvests energy from the source node. In the literature, there are three main energy-harvesting (EH) protocols, namely, time-switching relaying (TSR), power-splitting (PS) relaying (PSR) and ideal relaying receiver (IRR). Unlike the existing studies, in this paper, we consider $α$-$μ$ fading channels. In this respect, we derive accurate unified analytical expressions for the ergodic capacity for the aforementioned protocols over independent but not identically distribut…
Fundamental capacity limits are studied for the two-user wireless ergodic fading IC with partial Channel State Information at the Transmitters (CSIT) where each transmitter is equipped with an arbitrary deterministic function of the channel state (this model yields a full control over how much state information is available). One of the main challenges in the analysis of fading networks, specifically multi-receiver networks including fading ICs, is to obtain efficient capacity outer bounds. In this paper, a novel capacity outer bound is established for the two-user ergodic fading IC. For this …
We consider power allocation algorithms for fixed-rate transmission over Nakagami-m non-ergodic block-fading channels with perfect transmitter and receiver channel state information and discrete input signal constellations under both short- and long-term power constraints. Optimal power allocation schemes are shown to be direct applications of previous results in the literature. We show that the SNR exponent of the optimal short-term scheme is given by the Singleton bound. We also illustrate the significant gains available by employing long-term power constraints. Due to the nature of the expr…
We identify the role of equal strength interference links as bottlenecks on the ergodic sum capacity of a $K$ user phase-fading interference network, i.e., an interference network where the fading process is restricted primarily to independent and uniform phase variations while the channel magnitudes are held fixed across time. It is shown that even though there are $K(K-1)$ cross-links, only about $K/2$ disjoint and equal strength interference links suffice to determine the capacity of the network regardless of the strengths of the rest of the cross channels. This scenario is called a \emph{m…
In this study, the product of two independent and non-identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) random variables (RVs) for \k{appa}-μ fading distribution and α-μ fading distribution is considered. The method of the product model of RVs has been widely applied in numerous of communications fields, such as cascaded fading channels, multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, radar communications and cognitive radio networks (CRs). The exact series expressions of the product of two i.n.i.d. RVs X for \k{appa}-μ variates and Y for α-μ variates are derived instead of Fox H-function to solve the problem…
This work studies the capacity region of a two-user ergodic interference channel with fading, where only one of the users is subject to interference from the other user, and the channel state information (CSI) is only available at the receivers. A layered erasure model with one-sided interference and with arbitrary fading statistics is studied first, whose capacity region is completely determined as a polygon. Each dominant rate pair can be regarded as the outcome of a trade-off between the rate gain of the interference-free user and the rate loss of the other user due to interference. Using i…
In this paper, the ergodic sum-rate of a fading cognitive multiple access channel (C-MAC) is studied, where a secondary network (SN) with multiple secondary users (SUs) transmitting to a secondary base station (SBS) shares the spectrum band with a primary user (PU). An interference power constraint (IPC) is imposed on the SN to protect the PU. Under such a constraint and the individual transmit power constraint (TPC) imposed on each SU, we investigate the power allocation strategies to maximize the ergodic sum-rate of a fading C-MAC without successive interference cancellation (SIC). In partic…
For ergodic fading, a lattice coding and decoding strategy is proposed and its performance is analyzed for the single-input single-output (SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) point-to-point channel as well as the multiple-access channel (MAC), with channel state information available only at the receiver (CSIR). At the decoder a novel strategy is proposed consisting of a time-varying equalization matrix followed by decision regions that depend only on channel statistics, not individual realizations. Our encoder has a similar structure to that of Erez and Zamir. For the SISO channel…
The two-user wireless ergodic fading Broadcast Channel (BC) with partial Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) is considered. The CSIT is given by an arbitrary deterministic function of the channel state. This characteristic yields a full control over how much state information is available, from perfect to no information. In literature, capacity derivations for wireless ergodic fading channels, specifically for fading BCs, mostly rely on the analysis of channels comprising of parallel sub-channels. This technique is usually suitable for the cases where perfect state information …
The prospect of base station (BS) cooperation leading to joint combining at widely separated antennas has led to increased interest in macrodiversity systems, where both sources and receive antennas are geographically distributed. In this scenario, little is known analytically about channel capacity since the channel matrices have a very general form where each path may have a different power. Hence, in this paper we consider the ergodic sum capacity of a macrodiversity MIMO system with arbitrary numbers of sources and receive antennas operating over Rayleigh fading channels. For this system, …
In this correspondence, we analyze the ergodic capacity of a large uplink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system over generalized-$K$ fading channels. In the considered scenario, multiple users transmit their information to a base station equipped with a very large number of antennas. Since the effect of fast fading asymptotically disappears in massive MIMO systems, large-scale fading becomes the most dominant factor for the ergodic capacity of massive MIMO systems. Regarding this fact, in our work we concentrate our attention on the effects of large-scale fading for massiv…
We study irregular binary turbo codes over non-ergodic block-fading channels. We first propose an extension of channel multiplexers initially designed for regular turbo codes. We then show that, using these multiplexers, irregular turbo codes that exhibit a small decoding threshold over the ergodic Gaussian-noise channel perform very close to the outage probability on block-fading channels, from both density evolution and finite-length perspectives.
In this paper, the ergodic sum-rate and outage probability of a downlink single-antenna channel with K users are analyzed in the presence of Rayleigh flat fading, where limited channel state information (CSI) feedback is assumed. Specifically, only 1-bit feedback per fading block per user is available at the base station. We first study the ergodic sum-rate of the 1-bit feedback scheme, and consider the impact of feedback delay on the system. A closed-form expression for the achievable ergodic sum-rate is presented as a function of the fading temporal correlation coefficient. It is proved that…
A cognitive radio network (CRN) is formed by either allowing the secondary users (SUs) in a secondary communication network (SCN) to opportunistically operate in the frequency bands originally allocated to a primary communication network (PCN) or by allowing SCN to coexist with the primary users (PUs) in PCN as long as the interference caused by SCN to each PU is properly regulated. In this paper, we consider the latter case, known as spectrum sharing, and study the optimal power allocation strategies to achieve the ergodic capacity and the outage capacity of the SU fading channel under differ…
A multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) version of the dirty paper channel is studied, where the channel input and the dirt experience the same fading process and the fading channel state is known at the receiver (CSIR). This represents settings where signal and interference sources are co-located, such as in the broadcast channel. First, a variant of Costa's dirty paper coding (DPC) is presented, whose achievable rates are within a constant gap to capacity for all signal and dirt powers. Additionally, a lattice coding and decoding scheme is proposed, whose decision regions are independent of …
Link adaptation in which the transmission data rate is dynamically adjusted according to channel variation is often used to deal with time-varying nature of wireless channel. When channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is delayed by more than channel coherence time due to feedback delay, however, the effect of link adaptation can possibly be taken away if this delay is not taken into account. One way to deal with such delay is to predict current channel quality given available observation, but this would inevitably result in prediction error. In this paper, an algorithm with diffe…
We consider stability of scheduled multiaccess message communication with random coding and joint maximum-likehood decoding of messages. The framework we consider here models both the random message arrivals and the subsequent reliable communication by suitably combining techniques from queueing theory and information theory. The number of messages that may be scheduled for simultaneous transmission is limited to a given maximum value, and the channels from transmitters to receiver are quasi-static, flat, and have independent fades. Requests for message transmissions are assumed to arrive acco…
We investigate the secrecy capacity of an ergodic fading wiretap channel in which the main channel is correlated with the eavesdropper channel. In this study, the full Channel State Information (CSI) is assumed, and thus the transmitter knows the channel gains of the legitimate receiver and the eavesdropper. By analyzing the resulting secrecy capacity we quantify the loss of the secrecy capacity due to the correlation. In addition, we study the asymptotic behavior of the secrecy capacity as Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) tends to infinity. The capacity of an ordinary fading channel logarithmicall…
This paper is concerned with spectrum sharing cognitive radio networks, where a secondary user (SU) or cognitive radio link communicates simultaneously over the same frequency band with an existing primary user (PU) link. It is assumed that the SU transmitter has the perfect channel state information (CSI) on the fading channels from SU transmitter to both PU and SU receivers (as usually assumed in the literature), as well as the fading channel from PU transmitter to PU receiver (a new assumption). With the additional PU CSI, we study the optimal power control for the SU over different fading …
This thesis considers infinite constellations in fading channels, without power constraint and with perfect channel state information available at the receiver. Infinite constellations are the framework, proposed by Poltyrev, for analyzing coded modulation codes. The Poltyrev's capacity, is the highest achievable normalized log density (NLD) of codewords per unit volume, at possibly large block length, that guarantees a vanishing error probability. For a given finite block length and a fixed error probability, there is a gap between the highest achievable NLD and Poltyrev's capacity. The dispe…
The capacity of peak-power limited, single-antenna, noncoherent, flat-fading channels with memory is considered. The emphasis is on the capacity pre-log, i.e., on the limiting ratio of channel capacity to the logarithm of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), as the SNR tends to infinity. It is shown that, among all stationary & ergodic fading processes of a given spectral distribution function and whose law has no mass point at zero, the Gaussian process gives rise to the smallest pre-log. The assumption that the law of the fading process has no mass point at zero is essential in the sense that th…
For delay-limited communication over block-fading channels, the difference between the ergodic capacity and the maximum achievable expected rate for coding over a finite number of coherent blocks represents a fundamental measure of the penalty incurred by the delay constraint. This paper introduces a notion of worst-case expected-capacity loss. Focusing on the slow-fading scenario (one-block delay), the worst-case additive and multiplicative expected-capacity losses are precisely characterized for the point-to-point fading channel. Extension to the problem of writing on fading paper is also co…
A cooperative full duplex (FD) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme over Rician fading channels is considered. To be practical, imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC) and residual hardware impairments (RHIs) at transceivers are taken into account. To evaluate the performance of the considered system, the analytical approximate expressions for the outage probability (OP) and the ergodic rate (ER) of the considered system are derived, and the asymptotic performance is also explored. Simulation results manifest that the FD cooperative NOMA can improve the ergodic sum rate …
We study the dynamic power splitting for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in the ergodic fading channel. Considering the nonlinearity of practical energy harvesting circuits, we adopt the realistic nonlinear energy harvesting (EH) model rather than the idealistic linear EH model. To characterize the optimal rate-energy (RE) tradeoff, we consider the problem of maximizing the R-E region, which is nonconvex. We solve this challenging problem for two different cases of the channel state information (CSI): (i) when the CSI is known only at the receiver (the CSIR case) a…
This paper studies optimal bandwidth and power allocation in a cognitive radio network where multiple secondary users (SUs) share the licensed spectrum of a primary user (PU) under fading channels using the frequency division multiple access scheme. The sum ergodic capacity of all the SUs is taken as the performance metric of the network. Besides all combinations of the peak/average transmit power constraints at the SUs and the peak/average interference power constraint imposed by the PU, total bandwidth constraint of the licensed spectrum is also taken into account. Optimal bandwidth allocati…
This paper considers a single-antenna wirelesspowered communication network (WPCN) over a flat-fading channel. We show that, by using our probabilistic harvestand-transmit (PHAT) strategy, which requires the knowledge of instantaneous full channel state information (CSI) and fading probability distribution, the ergodic throughput of this system may be greatly increased relative to that achieved by the harvestthen-transmit (HTT) protocol. To do so, instead of dividing every frame to the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL), the channel is allocated to the UL wireless information transmission (WIT) and…
This paper presents a quantified assessment of the physical layer security capabilities of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless systems under eavesdropping. Specifically, we derive a closed-form expression for the ergodic secrecy capacity (ESC) that is adaptable to different types of fading and RIS size. The channels between the transmitter (TX) and RIS, the RIS and legitimate receiver as well as the TX and eavesdropper are assumed to follow independent mixture Gamma (MG) distributions. Note that MG is capable of modeling a large variety of well-known distributions, includin…
A proof is provided of the operational achievability of $R_\mathrm{rt}$ by the recursive training scheme in \cite{zhang07:it}, for general wide-sense stationary and ergodic Rayleigh fading processes.
Multimode/multicore fibers are expected to provide an attractive solution to overcome the capacity limit of the current optical communication system. In the presence of high cross-talk between modes/cores, the squared singular values of the input/output transfer matrix follow the law of the Jacobi ensemble of random matrices. Assuming that the channel state information is only available at the receiver, we derive a new expression for the ergodic capacity of the MIMO Jacobi fading channel. This expression involves double integrals which can be evaluated easily and efficiently. Moreover, the met…
This paper considers the cooperative device-to-device (D2D) systems with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). We assume that the base station (BS) can communicate simultaneously with all users to satisfy the full information transmission. In order to characterize the impact of the weak channel and different decoding schemes, two kinds of decoding strategies are proposed: \emph{single signal decoding scheme} and \emph{MRC decoding scheme}, respectively. For the \emph{single signal decoding scheme}, the users immediately decode the received signals after receptions from the BS. Meanwhile, for …
We consider a fading wiretap channel model where the transmitter has only statistical channel state information, and the legitimate receiver and eavesdropper have perfect channel state information. We propose a sequence of non-random lattice codes which achieve strong secrecy and semantic security over ergodic fading channels. The construction is almost universal in the sense that it achieves the same constant gap to secrecy capacity over Gaussian and ergodic fading models.
In this paper, we consider a general multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system with channel state information (CSI) feedback over time-correlated Rayleigh block-fading channels. Specifically, we first derive the closed-form expression of the minimum differential feedback rate to achieve the maximum erdodic capacity in the presence of channel estimation errors and quantization distortion at the receiver. With the feedback-channel transmission rate constraint, in the periodic feedback system, we further investigate the relationship of the ergodic capacity and the differential feedback interva…
This work addresses the question of achieving capacity with lattice codes in multi-antenna block fading channels when the number of fading blocks tends to infinity. A design criterion based on the normalized minimum determinant is proposed for division algebra multiblock space-time codes over fading channels; this plays a similar role to the Hermite invariant for Gaussian channels. It is shown that this criterion is sufficient to guarantee transmission rates within a constant gap from capacity both for slow fading channels and ergodic fading channels. This performance is achieved both under ma…
The existing investigations on artificial noise (AN) security systems assumed that only null spaces is used to send AN signals, and all eigen-subchannels should be used to transmit messages. Our previous work proposed an AN scheme that allocates some of eigen-subchannels to transmit AN signals for improving secrecy rates. Nevertheless, our previous work considered only uncorrelated MIMO Rayleigh fading channels. In fact, the correlations among antennas exist in realistic scattering channel environments. In this paper, we extend our previous AN scheme to spatially correlated Rayleigh fading cha…
The capacity of peak-power limited, single-antenna, non-coherent, flat-fading channels with memory is considered. The emphasis is on the capacity pre-log, i.e., on the limiting ratio of channel capacity to the logarithm of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), as the SNR tends to infinity. It is shown that, among all stationary and ergodic fading processes of a given spectral distribution function whose law has no mass point at zero, the Gaussian process gives rise to the smallest pre-log.
This paper studies the performance of hybrid-ARQ (automatic repeat request) in Rayleigh block fading channels. The long-term average transmitted rate is analyzed in a fast-fading scenario where the transmitter only has knowledge of channel statistics, and, consistent with contemporary wireless systems, rate adaptation is performed such that a target outage probability (after a maximum number of H-ARQ rounds) is maintained. H-ARQ allows for early termination once decoding is possible, and thus is a coarse, and implicit, mechanism for rate adaptation to the instantaneous channel quality. Althoug…
Ergodic capacity is an important performance measure associated with reliable communication at the highest rate at which information can be sent over the channel with a negligible probability of error. In the shadow of this definition, diversity receivers (such as selection combining, equal-gain combining and maximal-ratio combining) and transmission techniques (such as cascaded fading channels, amplify-and-forward multihop transmission) are deployed in mitigating various performance impairing effects such as fading and shadowing in digital radio communication links. However, the exact analysi…
