A proposed ground state for the Kagome Lattice Heisenberg Model (KLHM) consists of a Valence Bond Crystal (VBC) with a 36-site unit cell. We calculate the low-lying triplet and singlet excitations in the VBC phase for the infinite-lattice model and for the 36-site cluster. For the infinite lattice, the lowest triplet excitation is found to have a spin gap of approximately $0.08 \pm 0.02 J$ and a bandwidth of only about $0.01 J$. For the 36-site cluster, consisting of a single unit cell with periodic boundary conditions, there are substantial finite-size effects: the spin gap there is estimated to be approximately $0.2 J$, close to the exact diagonalization result of $0.164 J$. The triplet excitations attract one another and form many bound states in the spin-singlet channel. We find a large number of such bound states for the 36-site cluster, many of which appear to lie below the spin gap, again in agreement with the results from exact diagonalization.
Recent evidence from magnetic torque, electron spin resonance, and second harmonic generation indicate that the prototypical quantum spin liquid candidate, herbertsmithite, has a symmetry lower than its x-ray refined trigonal space group. Here, we consider known and possible distortions of this mineral class, along with related copper kagome oxides and fluorides, relate these to possible valence bond patterns, and comment on their relevance to the physics of these interesting materials.
General conditions in which disordered, spin liquid, and valence-bond ordered phases occur in quantum Ising antiferromagnets are studied using the prototype Kagome lattice spin models. A range of quantum dynamical processes in the Ising model, with and without total Ising spin conserved, are analytically shown to yield all three characteristic quantum paramagnetic phases in the Kagome system. Special emphasis is given to the XXZ model that can be sensibly compared to the Kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. It is explicitly demonstrated that the total-spin-conserving dynamics can yield a…
Motivated by a recent experiment on Rb2Cu3SnF12, where spin-1/2 Cu2+ moments reside on the layers of Kagome-like lattices, we investigate quantum ground states of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a series of deformed Kagome lattices. The deformation is characterized by a weaker exchange coupling (alpha*J) on certain lattice links appropriate for Rb2Cu3SnF12 with alpha=1 corresponding to the ideal Kagome lattice. In particular, we study possible valence bond solid phases using the perturbation theory around isolated dimer limits, dimer series expansion, and self-consistent bond operato…
We present a theory for site dilution in the Valence Bond Crystal Phase of the Kagome Lattice Heisenberg Model. The presence of an empty site leads to strong singlet bond across the impurity. It also creates a free spin, which delocalizes inside the unit cell. Finite concentration of quenched impurities leads to a Valence Bond Glass phase. This phase has short-range Valence Bond order, no spin-gap, large spin susceptibilities, linear specific heat due to two-level systems, as well as singlet and triplet excitations that decompose into kink-antikink pairs delocalized over a few lattice constant…
We explore the phase diagram and the low-energy physics of three Heisenberg antiferromagnets which, like the kagome lattice, are networks of corner-sharing triangles but contain two sets of inequivalent short-distance resonance loops. We use a combination of exact diagonalization, analytical strong-coupling theories, and resonating valence bond approaches, and scan through the ratio of the two inequivalent exchange couplings. In one limit, the lattices effectively become bipartite, while at the opposite limit heavily frustrated nets emerge. In between, competing tunneling processes result in s…
Recently, neutron scattering data on powder samples of Zn-paratacamite, Zn$_x$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_6$Cl$_{2}$, with small Zn concentration has been interpreted as evidence for valence bond solid and Néel ordering [1]. We study the classical and quantum Heisenberg models on the distorted kagome lattice appropriate for Zn-paratacamite at low Zn doping. Our theory naturally leads to the emergence of the valence bond solid and collinear magnetic order at zero temperature. Implications of our results to the existing experiments are discussed. We also suggest future inelastic neutron and X-ray scattering…
One of the most promising candidate ground states for the quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the Kagome lattice is the valence bond solid (VBS) with a 36-site unit cell. We present a theory of triplet excitation spectra about this ground state using bond operator formalism. In particular we obtain dispersions of all 18 triplet modes in the reduced Brillouin zone. In the bond operator mean-field theory, it is found that a large number of triplet modes are non-dispersive. In particular, the lowest triplet excitation is non-dispersive and degenerate with a dispersive mode at the zone c…
Unconventional ferromagnetism and superconductivity in the imbalanced kagome-lattice Hubbard model are investigated by the mean-field theory and determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. Due to the asymmetric band structure of kagome lattice, the spin-$z$ ferromagnetic order intrinsically exists in the system, which is first enhanced by the interaction, and then continuously destructed after reaching a maximum at a moderate interaction strength. In contrast, the $xy$-plane ferromagnetism develops only above a critical interaction, which is estimated to be $U_c/t=3.65 \pm 0.05$ by finite-size sca…

The singlet dynamics which plays a major role in the physics of the spin-1/2 Quantum Heisenberg Antiferromagnet (QHAF) on the Kagome lattice can be approximately described by projecting onto the nearest-neighbor valence bond (NNVB) singlet subspace. We re-visit here the effective Quantum Dimer Model which originates from the latter NNVB-projected Heisenberg model via a non-perturbative Rokhsar-Kivelson-like scheme. By using Lanczos exact diagonalisation on a 108-site cluster supplemented by a careful symmetry analysis, it is shown that a previously-found 36-site Valence Bond Crystal (VBC) in f…
We investigate the ground state properties of a spin-1 kagome antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model using tensor-network (TN) methods. We obtain the energy per site {$e_0=-1.41090(2)$ with $D^*=8$ multiplets retained (i.e., a bond dimension of $D=24$), and $e_0=-1.4116(4)$ from large-$D$ extrapolation,} by accurate TN calculations directly in the thermodynamic limit. The symmetry between the two kinds of triangles is spontaneously broken, with a relative energy difference of $δ\approx$ 19\%, i.e, there is a trimerization (simplex) valence-bond order in the ground state. The spin-spin, dimer-dimer…
Zn-Paratacamite is a rare spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic insulator with an ideal kagome lattice structure in part of its phase diagram. As a function of Zn doping, this material undergoes a structural distortion which relieves the frustration and introduces magnetic order in the ground state, though the precise nature of the order is not clear at this point. In this paper, we present strong evidence for Neel ordering in the strongly distorted phase of Zn-Paratacamite through the application of quantum Monte-Carlo techniques. These numerical results support a recent Schwinger-boson mean field theor…
We present numerical evidence for the emergence of an extended valence bond solid (VBS) phase at $T=0$ in the kagome $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet with ferromagnetic further-neighbor interactions. The VBS is located at the boundary between two magnetically ordered regions and extends close to the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg point. It exhibits a diamond-like singlet covering pattern with a $12$-site unit-cell. Our results suggest the possibility of a direct, possibly continuous, quantum phase transition from the neighboring $\mathbf{q}=0$ coplanar magnetically ordered phase into the VBS ph…
We study the low-energy properties of Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 and spin-1 systems on various clusters made up of triangles. Some of the clusters have a geometry similar to representative pieces of the Kagome lattice, while others have the geometry of a sawtooth chain. While the ground state always has the lowest possible spin (0 or 1/2), the nature of the low-energy excitations depends on the geometry and the site spin. For the Kagome clusters with spin-1 sites, the lowest excitations are gapped, with singlet and triplet excitations having similar gaps. This is in contrast to Kago…
Determining ground states of correlated electron systems is fundamental to understanding novel phenomena in condensed matter physics. A difficulty, however, arises in a geometrically frustrated system in which the incompatibility between the global topology of an underlying lattice and local spin interactions gives rise to macroscopically degenerate ground states, potentially prompting the emergence of quantum spin states, such as resonating valence bond (RVB) and valence bond solid (VBS). Although theoretically proposed to exist in a kagome lattice -- one of the most highly frustrated lattice…
The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome antiferromagnet is considered an ideal host for a quantum spin liquid ground state. We find that when the bonds of the kagome lattice are modulated with a periodic pattern, new quantum ground states emerge. Newly synthesized crystalline barlowite (Cu$_4$(OH)$_6$FBr) and Zn-substituted barlowite demonstrate the delicate interplay between singlet states and spin order on the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome lattice. Comprehensive structural measurements demonstrate that our new variant of barlowite maintains hexagonal symmetry at low temperatures with an arrangement of dis…
The spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice, which is closely realized in layered Mott insulators such as ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, is one of the oldest and most enigmatic spin-1/2 lattice model. While the numerical evidence has accumulated in favor of a quantum spin liquid, the debate is still open as to whether it is a $Z_2$ spin liquid with very short-range correlations (some kind of Resonating Valence Bond spin liquid), or an algebraic spin-liquid with power-law correlations. To address this issue, we have pushed the program started by Rokhsar and Kivelson in their derivation of the …
The highly-frustrated spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg model with both nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) neighbor exchange interactions is revisited by using an extended variational space of projected wave functions that are optimized with state-of-the-art methods. Competition between modulated valence-bond crystals (VBCs) proposed in the literature and the Dirac spin liquid (DSL) is investigated. We find that the addition of a {\it small} ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange coupling $|J_2|>0.09 J_1$ leads to stabilization of a 36-site unit cell VBC, although the DSL remains a local…
We investigate the Kagome lattice Hubbard model at half-filling by variational Monte-Carlo with testing the U(1)-Dirac spin liquid, uniform and valence bond crystal states. Even for the large-$U$ case the U(1) Dirac state, being the optimal state in the Heisenberg model, cannot be recovered. While the finite $U$ Hubbard model allows the introduction of vacancies in a different manner compared to the $t-J$ model, the physics appears to have many similarities. In particular a valence bond crystal is formed in the intermediate-$U$ regime. We observe an impact of the formation of this valence bond…
We present an effective $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory that captures various competing phases in spin-1/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnets: the topological $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid (SL) phase, and the 12-site and 36-site valence bond solid (VBS) phases. Our effective theory is a generalization of the recent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory proposed for SL phases by Wan and Tchernyshyov. In particular, we investigate possible VBS phases that arise from vison condensations in the SL. In addition to the 12-site and 36-site VBS phases, there exists 6-site VBS that is closely related to the symmetry-break…
The discovery by Kane and Mele of a model of spinful electrons characterized by a $\mathcal{Z}_2$ topological invariant had a lasting effect on the study of electronic band structures. Given this, it is natural to ask whether similar topology can be found in the band-like excitations of magnetic insulators, and recently models supporting $\mathcal{Z}_2$ topological invariants have been proposed for both magnon [Kondo et al. Phys. Rev. B 99, 041110(R) (2019)] and triplet [D. G. Joshi and A. P. Schnyder, Phys. Rev. B 100, 020407 (2019)] excitations. In both cases, magnetic excitations form time-…
We revisit the description of the low-energy singlet sector of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on kagome in terms of an effective quantum dimer model. With the help of exact diagonalizations of appropriate finite-size clusters, we show that the embedding of a given process in its kagome environment leads to dramatic modifications of the amplitudes of the elementary loop processes, an effect not accessible to the standard approach based on the truncation of the Hamiltonian to the nearest-neighbour valence-bond basis. The resulting parameters are consistent with a Z$_2$ spin liquid rathe…
In this paper, we do a complete classification of valence-bond crystals (VBCs) on the kagome lattice based on general arguments of symmetry only and thus identify many new VBCs for different unit cell sizes. For the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet, we study the relative energetics of competing gapless spin liquids (SLs) and VBC phases within the class of Gutzwiller-projected fermionic wave functions using variational Monte Carlo techniques, hence implementing exactly the constraint of one fermion per site. By using a state-of-the-art optimization method, we conclusively show that the U(1) …
The excitonic insulator (EI) state is a strongly correlated many-body ground state, arising from an instability in the band structure towards exciton formation. We show that the flat valence and conduction bands of a semiconducting diatomic Kagome lattice, as exemplified in a superatomic graphene lattice, can possibly conspire to enable an interesting triplet EI state, based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with many-body GW and Bethe-Salpeter Equation(BSE). Our results indicate that massive carriers in flat bands with highly localized electron and hole wavefunctions si…
Using large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations and dual vortex theory we analyze the ground state phase diagram of hard-core bosons on the kagome lattice with nearest neighbor repulsion. In contrast to the case of a triangular lattice, no supersolid emerges for strong interactions. While a uniform superfluid prevails at half-filling, two novel solid phases emerge at densities $ρ=1/3$ and $ρ=2/3$. These solids exhibit an only partial ordering of the bosonic density, allowing for local resonances on a subset of hexagons of the kagome lattice. We provide evidence for a weakly first-order phase…
A class of local SU(2)-invariant spin-1/2 Hamiltonians is studied that has ground states within the space of nearest neighbor valence bond states on the kagome lattice. Cases include "generalized Klein'' models without obvious non-valence bond ground states, as well as a "resonating-valence-bond" Hamiltonian whose unique ground states within the nearest neighbor valence bond space are four topologically degenerate "Sutherland-Rokhsar-Kivelson'' (SRK) type wavefunctions, which are expected to describe a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid. The proof of this uniqueness is intimately related to the…
The Kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet is mapped onto an effective Hamiltonian on the star superlattice by Contractor Renormalization. Comparison of ground state energies on large lattices to Density Matrix Renormalization Group justifies truncation of effective interactions at range 3. Within our accuracy, magnetic and translational symmetries are not broken (i.e. a spin liquid ground state). However, we discover doublet spectral degeneracies which signal the onset of p6 - chirality symmetry breaking. This is understood by simple mean field analysis. Experimentally, the p6 chiral order paramet…
We show that the optical responses below the Mott gap can be used to probe the spin-triplet excitations in valence bond solid (VBS) phases in Mott insulators. The optical conductivity in this regime arises due to the electronic polarization mechanism via virtual electron hopping processes. We apply this mechanism to the Hubbard model with spin-orbit couplings and/or the corresponding spin model with significant Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions, and compute the optical conductivity of VBS states on both ideal and deformed Kagome lattices. In case of the deformed Kagome lattice, we study …
We study the ground state properties of a quantum antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice in the presence of a magnetic field, paying particular attention to the stability of the plateau at magnetization 1/3 of saturation and the nature of its ground state. We discuss fluctuations around classical ground states and argue that quantum and classical calculations at the harmonic level do not lead to the same result in contrast to the zero-field case. For spin S=1/2 we find a magnetic gap below which an exponential number of non-magnetic excitations are present. Moreover, such non-magnetic excitatio…
Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations on large systems (up to 3096 spins) indicate that the ground state of the Heisenberg model on a 3-chain Kagome strip is spontaneously dimerized. This system has degenerate ground states and a gap to triplet and singlet excitations. These results are in direct contradiction with recent results of Azaria et al (Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1694 (1998)) and suggest a need for a reexamination of the underlying field theory.
A small value of the spin gap in quantum antiferromagnets with strong frustration makes them susceptible to nominally small deviations from the ideal Heisenberg model. One of such perturbations, the anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, is an important perturbation for the $S=1/2$ kagome antiferromagnet, one of the current candidates for a quantum-disordered ground state. We study the influence of the DM term in a related one-dimensional system, the sawtooth chain that has valence-bond order in its ground state. Through a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we show that a…
We study the plaquette valence-bond solid phase of the spin-1/2 J_1-J_2 antiferromagnet Heisenberg model on the square lattice within the bond-operator theory. We start by considering four S = 1/2 spins on a single plaquette and determine the bond operator representation for the spin operators in terms of singlet, triplet, and quintet boson operators. The formalism is then applied to the J_1-J_2 model and an effective interacting boson model in terms of singlets and triplets is derived. The effective model is analyzed within the harmonic approximation and the previous results of Zhitomirsky an…
A three-dimensional system of interacting spins typically develops static long-range order when it is cooled. If the spins are quantum (S = 1/2), however, novel quantum paramagnetic states may appear. The most highly sought state among them is the resonating valence bond (RVB) state in which every pair of neighboring quantum spins form entangled spin singlets (valence bonds) and the singlets are quantum mechanically resonating amongst all the possible highly degenerate pairing states. Here we provide experimental evidence for such quantum paramagnetic states existing in frustrated antiferromag…
The complex iridium oxide Na3Ir3O8 with a B-site ordered spinel structure was synthesized in single crystalline form, where the chiral hyper-kagome lattice of Ir atoms, as observed in the spin-liquid candidate Na4Ir3O8, was identified. The average valence of Ir is 4.33+ and, therefore, Na3Ir3O8 can be viewed as a doped analogue of the hyper-kagome spin liquid with Ir4+. The transport measurements showed that Na3Ir3O8 is in fact a semi-metal. The electronic structure calculation demonstrated that the strong spin-orbit coupling of Ir yields the semi-metallic state out of an otherwise band insula…
We investigate the ground state properties of the Kagome lattice $t-J$ model at low doping. We propose a new state of matter. Our results suggest an interesting phase with a balance of spin-exchange and kinetic exchange through the building blocks of stars and their internal hexagons, being linked by triangles. The particles favor to hop in the hexagons, while the spin-exchange is taking place mainly on the stars. The combined effect leads to the formation of the "Star of David" valence bond crystal. We discuss our result in connection with static impurities, and show the likely relevance to t…
We show that the magnetic Raman response of a spin-liquid is independent of the polarizations of the light for triangular symmetries. In contrast, a ground-state that has a broken symmetry shows characteristic oscillations when the polarizations are rotated. This would allow to detect weak broken symmetries and emergent order-parameters. We focus on the Kagome antiferromagnet where no conventional long-range order has been found so far, and present the Raman cross-section of a spin-liquid and a valence bond crystal (VBC) using a random phase approximation.
We investigate the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions on the low temperature magnetic susceptibility for a system whose low energy physics is dominated by short-range valence bonds (singlets). Our general perturbative approach is applied to specific models expected to be in this class, including the Shastry-Sutherland model of the spin-dimer compound SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 and the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model of the recently discovered S=1/2 kagome compound ZnCu_3(OH)_6Cl_2. The central result is that a short-ranged valence bond phase, when perturbed with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interact…
It is well known that in quantum spin liquids and other magnetically disordered systems, the tunneling amplitudes between different nearest-neighbor valence bond (NNVB) configurations drop exponentially in the length L of the tunneling loops. Here we show that virtual excursions outside the NNVB basis can alter completely this fundamental quantum-mechanical notion even in extreme cases where the minimal NNVB truncation appears very robust. This paradigm shift is demonstrated for the quantum spin-1/2 square-kagome, where strong geometric frustration, similar to the two-dimensional kagome, preve…
We consider the effects of doping the S = 1/2 kagome lattice with static impurities. We demonstrate that impurities lower the number of low-lying singlet states, induce dimer-dimer correlations of considerable spatial extent, and do not generate free spin degrees of freedom. Most importantly, they experience a highly unconventional mutual repulsion as a direct consequence of the strong spin frustration. These properties are illustrated by exact diagonalization, and reproduced to semi-quantitative accuracy within a dimer resonating-valence-bond description which affords access to longer length …
{Extensive calculations in the short-range RVB (Resonating valence bond) subspace on both the trimerized and the regular (non-trimerized) Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice show that short-range dimer singlets capture the specific low-energy features of both models. In the trimerized case the singlet spectrum splits into bands in which the average number of dimers lying on one type of bonds is fixed. These results are in good agreement with the mean field solution of an effective model recently introduced. For the regular model one gets a continuous, gapless spectrum, in qualitative agreem…
We study doping on the Kagome lattice by exploring the $t-J$-model with variational Monte-Carlo. We use a number of Gutzwiller projected spin-liquid and valence bond-crystal states and compare their energies at several system-sizes. We find that introducing mobile holes drives the system away from the Spin-Liquid state proposed by Ran et al for the undoped system, towards a uniform state with zero-flux. On top of the uniform-state a VBC of the Hastings-type is formed for low doping. The results are compared to exact diagonalization on small clusters. This agrees well.
The low-energy singlet dynamics of the Quantum Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on the Kagome lattice is described by a quantitative Quantum Dimer Model. Using advanced numerical tools, the latter is shown to exhibit Valence Bond Crystal order with a large 36-site unit cell and hidden degeneracy between even and odd parities. Evidences are given that this groundstate lies in the vicinity of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ dimer liquid region separated by a Quantum Critical Point. Implications regarding numerical analysis and experiments are discussed.
The spin-$1/2$ $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice represents one of the simplest examples in which the effets of magnetic interactions may suppress magnetic order, eventually leading to a pure quantum phase with no local order parameters. This model has been extensively studied in the last three decades, with conflicting results. Here, by using Gutzwiller-projected wave functions and recently developed methods to assess the low-energy spectrum, we show the existence of a level crossing between the lowest-energy triplet and singlet excitations for $J_2/J_1 \approx 0.54$. This fact…
Starting from a modified version of the the S=1/2 Kagome antiferromagnet to emphasize the role of elementary triangles, an effective Hamiltonian involving spin and chirality variables is derived. A mean-field decoupling that retains the quantum nature of these variables is shown to yield a Hamiltonian that can be solved exactly, leading to the following predictions: i) The number of low lying singlet states increase with the number of sites N like 1.15 to the power N; ii) A singlet-triplet gap remains in the thermodynamic limit; iii) Spinons form boundstates with a small binding energy. By com…
We obtain the rich phase diagrams in the Hubbard model on the triangular Kagomé lattice as a function of interaction, temperature and asymmetry, by combining the cellular dynamical mean-field theory with the continuous time quantum Monte Carlo method. The phase diagrams show the asymmetry separates the critical points in Mott transition of two sublattices on the triangular Kagomé lattice and produces two novel phases called plaquette insulator with an obvious gap and a gapless Kondo metal. When the Coulomb interaction is stronger than the critical value Uc, a short range paramagnetic insulatin…
A central idea in strongly correlated systems is that doping a Mott insulator leads to a superconductor by transforming the resonating valence bonds (RVBs) into spin-singlet Cooper pairs. Here, we argue that a spin-triplet RVB (tRVB) state, driven by spatially, or orbitally anisotropic ferromagnetic interactions can provide the parent state for triplet superconductivity. We apply this idea to the iron-based superconductors, arguing that strong onsite Hund's interactions develop intra-atomic tRVBs between the t$_{2g}$ orbitals. On doping, the presence of two iron atoms per unit cell allows thes…
We numerically study the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagomé lattice using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. We find that the ground state is a magnetically disordered spin liquid, characterized by an exponential decay of spin-spin correlation function in real space and a magnetic structure factor showing system-size independent peaks at commersurate antiferromangetic wavevectors. We obtain a spin triplet excitation gap $ΔE(S=1)=0.055\pm 0.005$ by extrapolation based on the large size results, and confirm the presence of gapless singlet excitations. …
Entanglement renormalization techniques are applied to numerically investigate the ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a kagome lattice. Lattices of N={36,144,inf} sites with periodic boundary conditions are considered. For the infinite lattice, the best approximation to the ground state is found to be a valence bond crystal (VBC) with a 36-site unit cell, compatible with a previous proposal. Its energy per site, E=-0.43221, is an exact upper bound and is lower than the energy of any previous (gapped or algebraic) spin liquid candidate for the ground state.
We extended the Schwinger boson construction to obtain wave functions that are resonating valence bond (RVB) counterparts of the degenerate coplanar classical states on the Kagome lattice. We examined all 84 of them on the 36-site cluster and found that they form a narrow energy band. On the 12-site cluster, there are only four such states and their superpositions accurately account for the second through fourth exact diagonalization (ED) states, while the ED ground state is accurately reproduced by allowing a particular two-vison insertion on top of the q=0 RVB state. Thus, we have establishe…
We present a combined experimental and theoretical x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study of the new class of cobaltates YBaCo4O7 and YBaCo3MO7 (M= Al, Fe). The focus is on the local electronic and magnetic properties of the transition metal ions in these geometrically frustrated kagome compounds. For the mixed valence cobaltate YBaCo4O7, both the Co2+ and Co3+ are found to be in the high spin state. The stability of these high spin states in tetrahedral coordination is compared with those in the more studied case of octahedral coordination. For the new compound YBaCo3FeO7, we find exclusiv…
Quantum spin ice, modeled for magnetic rare-earth pyrochlores, has attracted great interest for hosting a U(1) quantum spin liquid, which involves spin-ice monopoles as gapped deconfined spinons, as well as gapless excitations analogous to photons. However, the global phase diagram under a [111] magnetic field remains open. Here we uncover by means of unbiased quantum Monte-Carlo simulations that a supersolid of monopoles, showing both a superfluidity and a partial ionization, intervenes the kagomé spin ice and a fully ionized monopole insulator, in contrast to classical spin ice where a direc…
The spin-1/2 Heisenberg kagome antiferromagnet is one of the paradigmatic playgrounds for frustrated quantum magnetism, with an extensive number of competing resonating valence bond (RVB) states emerging at low energies, including gapped and gapless spin liquids and valence bond crystals. Here we revisit the crossover from this quantum RVB phase to a semiclassical regime brought about by anisotropic Kitaev interactions, and focus on the precise mechanisms underpinning this crossover. To this end, we introduce a simple parametrization of the classical ground states (GSs) in terms of emergent Is…
The doping of quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the kagome lattice by non-magnetic impurities is investigated within the framework of a generalized quantum dimer model (QDM) describing a) the valence bond crystal (VBC), b) the dimer liquid and c) the critical region on equal footing. Following the approach by Ralko et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 117204 (2008)] for the square and triangular lattices, we introduce the (minimal) extension of the QDM on the Kagome lattice to account for spontaneous creation of mobile S=1/2 spinons at finite magnetic field. Modulations of the dimer density (at …
High intensity pulsed neutron scattering reveals a new set of magnetic excitations in the pinwheel valence bond solid state of the distorted kagome lattice antiferromagnet Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. The polarization of the dominant dispersive modes (2 meV $<\hbarω< $7 meV) is determined and found consistent with a dimer series expansion with strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions ($D/J=0.18$). A weakly dispersive mode near 5 meV and shifted "ghosts" of the main modes are attributed to the enlarged unit cell below a $T=215$ K structural transition. Continuum scattering between 8 meV and 10 meV …
Ce$_{3}$Al is an archetypal heavy-fermion compound with multiple crystalline phases. Here, we try to investigate its electronic structures in the hexagonal phase ($α$-Ce$_{3}$Al) and cubic phase ($β$-Ce$_{3}$Al) by means of a combination of density functional theory and single-site dynamical mean-field theory. We confirm that the 4$f$ valence electrons in both phases are itinerant, accompanied with strong valence state fluctuations. Their 4$f$ band structures are heavily renormalized by electronic correlations, resulting in large effective electron masses. The Kondo screening in Ce$_{3}$Al wou…
We study the ground state phase diagram of the quantum spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the kagomé lattice with first- ($J_1 < 0$), second- ($J_2 < 0$), and third-neighbor interactions ($J_d > 0$) by means of analytical low-energy field theory and numerical density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies. The results offer a consistent picture of the $J_d$-dominant regime in terms of three sets of spin chains weakly coupled by the ferromagnetic inter-chain interactions $J_{1,2}$. When either $J_1$ or $J_2$ is dominant, the model is found to support one of two cuboctohedral phases, cuboc1 and…
