The discovery by Kane and Mele of a model of spinful electrons characterized by a $\mathcal{Z}_2$ topological invariant had a lasting effect on the study of electronic band structures. Given this, it is natural to ask whether similar topology can be found in the band-like excitations of magnetic insulators, and recently models supporting $\mathcal{Z}_2$ topological invariants have been proposed for both magnon [Kondo et al. Phys. Rev. B 99, 041110(R) (2019)] and triplet [D. G. Joshi and A. P. Schnyder, Phys. Rev. B 100, 020407 (2019)] excitations. In both cases, magnetic excitations form time--reversal (TR) partners, which mimic the Kramers pairs of electrons in the Kane-Mele model but do not enjoy the same type of symmetry protection. In this paper, we revisit this problem in the context of the triplet excitations of a spin model on the bilayer kagome lattice. Here the triplet excitations provide a faithful analog of the Kane-Mele model as long as the Hamiltonian preserves the TR$\times$U(1) symmetry. We find that exchange anisotropies, allowed by the point group and typical in realistic models, break the required TR$\times$U(1) symmetry and instantly destroy the $\mathcal{Z}_2$ band topology. We further consider the effects of TR breaking by an applied magnetic field. In this case, the lifting of spin-degeneracy leads to a triplet Chern insulator, which is stable against the breaking of TR$\times$U(1) symmetry. Kagome bands realize both a quadratic and a linear band touching, and we provide a thorough characterization of the Berry curvature associated with both cases. We also calculate the triplet-mediated spin Nernst and thermal Hall signals which could be measured in experiments. These results suggest that the $\mathcal{Z}_2$ topology of band-like excitations in magnets may be intrinsically fragile compared to their electronic counterparts.
Kagome Chern Magnets are lattices which host a Chern state when they are non-magnetic and a Chern Gap when they become magnetic. These Chern gaps can host fractional Chern Fermions. There has been extensive research in the RMn$_6$Sn$_6$ system which hosts a small Chern gap with many trivial bands surrounding them. RMn$_6$Ge$_6$ is studied theoretically in order to find a more insulating Kagome magnetic with fewer bands near the Chern gap.
RV6Sn6 (R=rare earth) compounds are appealing materials platforms for exploring the interplay between R-site magnetism and nontrivial band topology associated with the nonmagnetic vanadium-based kagome network. Here we present the synthesis and characterization of the kagome metal TbV6Sn6 via single-crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetization, transport, and heat capacity measurements. Magnetization measurements reveal strong, uniaxial magnetic anisotropy rooted in the alignment of Tb3Å moments in the interplane direction below 4.3(2) K. TbV6Sn6 exhibits multiband transport behavior with high mob…
Kagome materials often host exotic quantum phases, including spin liquids, Chern gap, charge order, and superconductivity. Existing scanning microscopy studies of the kagome charge order have been limited to non-kagome surface layers. Here we tunnel into the kagome lattice of FeGe to uncover features of the charge order. Our spectroscopic imaging identifes a 2x2 charge order in the magnetic kagome lattice, resembling that discovered in kagome superconductors. Spin-mapping across steps of unit-cell-height demonstrates that this charge order emerges from spin-polarized electrons with an antiferr…
In this Letter, we identify a noncoplanar chiral spin texture on the distorted kagomé-lattice antiferromagnets induced by the presence of a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the distorted kagomé plane. The noncoplanar chiral spin texture has a nonzero scalar spin chirality similar to a chiral quantum spin liquid with broken time-reversal symmetry. In the noncoplanar regime we observe nontrivial topological magnetic excitations and thermal Hall response through the emergent field-induced scalar spin chirality in contrast to collinear ferromagnets in which the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) sp…
Kagome magnet usually hosts nontrivial electronic or magnetic states drawing great interests in condensed matter physics. In this paper, we report a systematic study on transport properties of kagome magnet TmMn$_6$Sn$_6$. The prominent topological Hall effect (THE) has been observed in a wide temperature region spanning over several magnetic phases and exhibits strong temperature and field dependence. This novel phenomenon due to non-zero spin chirality indicates possible appearance of nontrival magnetic states accompanying with strong fluctuations. The planar applied field drives planar Hall…
The spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets are key prototype materials for studying frustrated magnetism. Three isostructural kagome antiferromagnets LnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$ (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy) have been successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method. LnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$ adopts space group $P\overline{3}m1$ and features the layered Cu-kagome lattice with lanthanide Ln$^{3+}$ cations sitting at the center of the hexagons. Although heavy lanthanides (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy) in LnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$ provide a large effective magnetic moment and ferromagnetic-like spin correlations compared to light-lant…
Kagome magnets provide a fascinating platform for a plethora of topological quantum phenomena. Here, utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we demonstrate Weyl lines with strong out-of-plane dispersion in an A-A stacked kagome magnet TbxGd1-xMn6Sn6. On the Gd rich side, the Weyl line remains nearly spin-orbit-gapless due to a remarkable cooperative interplay between Kane-Mele spin-orbit-coupling, low site symmetry and in-plane magnetic order. Under Tb substitution, the kagome Weyl line gaps due to a magnetic reorientation to out-of-plane order. Our results illustrate the magnetic…
Employing complementary torque magnetometry and electron spin resonance on single crystals of herbertsmithite, the closest realization to date of a quantum kagome antiferromagnet featuring a spin-liquid ground state, we provide novel insight into different contributions to its magnetism. At low temperatures, two distinct types of defects with different magnetic couplings to the kagome spins are found. Surprisingly, their magnetic response contradicts the three-fold symmetry of the ideal kagome lattice, suggesting the presence of a global structural distortion that may be related to the establi…
We consider the Kondo-lattice model on the kagome lattice and study its weak-coupling instabilities at band filling fractions for which the Fermi surface has singularities. These singularites include Dirac points, quadratic Fermi points in contact with a flat band, and Van Hove saddle points. By combining a controlled analytical approach with large-scale numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the weak-coupling instabilities of the Kondo-lattice model lead to exotic magnetic orderings. In particular, some of these magnetic orderings produce a spontaneous quantum anomalous Hall state.
Magnetic competition in topological kagome magnets is studied by incorporating the spin-orbit coupling, the anisotropic Hund coupling and spin exchange into the kagome lattice. Using the Bogoliubov variational principle we find the stable phases at zero and finite temperatures. At zero temperature and in the strong Ising-Hund coupling regime, a magnetic tunability from the out-of-plane ferromagnetism (FM) to the in-plane antiferromagnetism (AFM) is achieved by a universal property of the critical in-plane Hund coupling. At two-thirds filling the phase transition from the out-of-plane FM to the…
Neutron scattering measurements have been performed on deuterated powder samples of claringbullite and Zn-doped claringbullite (Zn$_x$Cu$_{4-x}$(OD)$_{6}$FCl). At low temperatures, claringbullite Cu$_4$(OD)$_{6}$FCl forms a distorted pyrochlore lattice with long-range magnetic order and spin-wave-like magnetic excitations. Partial Zn doping leads to the nominal ZnCu$_3$(OD)$_{6}$FCl compound, a geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet that shows no transition to magnetic order down to 1.5 K. The magnetic excitations form a gapless continuum, a signature of fractional excitation…
We present a systematic study of the structure, electronic, and magnetic properties of a new branch of intermetalllic compounds, $R$V$_6$Sn$_6$ ($R$ = Tb - Tm) by using X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, electrical transport, and heat-capacity measurements. These compounds feature a combination of a non-magnetic vanadium kagome sublattice and a magnetic rare-earth triangular sublattice that supports various spin anisotropies based on different $R$ ions. We find magnetic orders for the $R$ = Tb, Dy, and Ho compounds at 4.4, 3, 2.5 K, respectively, while no ordering is de…
At low temperatures, the thermal conductivity of spin excitations in a magnetic insulator can exceed that of phonons. However, because they are charge neutral, the spin waves are not expected to display a thermal Hall effect in a magnetic field. Recently, this semiclassical notion has been upended in quantum magnets in which the spin texture has a finite chirality. In the Kagome lattice, the chiral term generates a Berry curvature. This results in a thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{xy}$ that is topological in origin. Here we report observation of a large $κ_{xy}$ in the Kagome magnet Cu(1-3, bdc)…
In ordinary materials, electrons conduct both electricity and heat, where their charge-entropy relations observe the Mott formula and the Wiedemann-Franz law. In topological quantum materials, the transverse motion of relativistic electrons can be strongly affected by the quantum field arising around the topological fermions, where a simple model description of their charge-entropy relations remains elusive. Here we report the topological charge-entropy scaling in the kagome Chern magnet TbMn$_6$Sn$_6$, featuring pristine Mn kagome lattices with strong out-of-plane magnetization. Through both …
We explore the phase diagram and the low-energy physics of three Heisenberg antiferromagnets which, like the kagome lattice, are networks of corner-sharing triangles but contain two sets of inequivalent short-distance resonance loops. We use a combination of exact diagonalization, analytical strong-coupling theories, and resonating valence bond approaches, and scan through the ratio of the two inequivalent exchange couplings. In one limit, the lattices effectively become bipartite, while at the opposite limit heavily frustrated nets emerge. In between, competing tunneling processes result in s…
Owing to the unusual geometry of kagome lattices-lattices made of corner-sharing triangles-their electrons are useful for studying the physics of frustrated, correlated and topological quantum electronic states. In the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, the magnetic and electronic structures of kagome lattices are further entangled, which can lead to hitherto unknown spin-orbit phenomena. Here we use a combination of vector-magnetic-field capability and scanning tunnelling microscopy to elucidate the spin-orbit nature of the kagome ferromagnet Fe3Sn2 and explore the associated exotic corr…
The geometrical frustration nature of the kagome lattice makes it a great host to flat electronic band, non-trivial topological properties, and novel magnetisms. Metallic kagome antiferromagnet YMn$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$ exhibits the topological Hall effect (THE) when an in-plane magnetic field is applied. THE is typically associated with the nanometer-sized non-coplanar spin structure of skyrmions in non-centrosymmetric magnets with large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Here we use single crystal neutron diffraction to determine the field/temperature dependence of the magnetic structure in YMn$_{6}…
Rb2SnCu3F12 has been studied using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, powder neutron diffraction and single crystal X-ray diffraction at a range of temperatures (100 to 500 K). A broad but clear phase transition, possibly of re-entrant character, is found to occur in the powder form, whereas the corresponding transition is not seen in the single crystal.
We study kagome lattice antiferromagnets where the effects of easy axis single-ion anisotropy ($D$) dominates over the Heisenberg exchange $J$. For $S \ge 3/2$, virtual quantum fluctuations help lift the extensive classical degeneracy. We demonstrate the presence of a one-third magnetization plateau for a broad range of magnetic fields $J^3/D^2 \lesssim B \lesssim JS$ along the easy axis. The fully equilibriated system at low temperature on this plateau develops an unusual {\em nematic} order that breaks sublattice rotation symmetry but not translation symmetry--however, extremely slow dynamic…
Crystal geometry can greatly influence the emergent properties of quantum materials. As an example, the kagome lattice is an ideal platform to study the rich interplay between topology, magnetism, and electronic correlation. In this work, combining high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab-initio calculation, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of XMn6Sn6 (X = Dy, Tb, Gd, Y) family compounds. We observe the Dirac fermion and the flat band arising from the magnetic kagome lattice of Mn atoms. Interestingly, the flat band locates in the same energy regio…
In frustrated magnets the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction arising from spin-orbit coupling can induce a magnetic long-range order. Here, we report a theoretical prediction of thermal Hall effect in frustrated kagomé magnets such as KCr$_3$(OH)$_6$(SO4)$_2$ and KFe$_3$(OH)$_{6}$(SO$_{4}$)$_2$. The thermal Hall effects in these materials are induced by scalar spin chirality as opposed to DMI in previous studies. The scalar spin chirality originates from magnetic-field-induced chiral spin configuration due to non-coplanar spin textures, but in general it can be spontaneously developed as a macro…
Kagome lattices host flat bands due to their frustrated lattice geometry, which leads to destructive quantum interference of electron wave functions. Here, we report imaging of the kagome flat band localization in real-space using scanning tunneling microscopy. We identify both the Fe3Sn kagome lattice layer and the Sn2 honeycomb layer with atomic resolution in kagome antiferromagnet FeSn. On the Fe3Sn lattice, at the flat band energy determined by the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, tunneling spectroscopy detects an unusual state localized uniquely at the Fe kagome lattice network.…
Electronic properties of the single crystal of GdV6Sn6, where non-magnetic V-kagome layers are separated by magnetic Gd-triangular lattice, are investigated. GdV6Sn6 exhibits unique magnetotransport properties at low-temperature such as non-linear Hall resistivity and increase of resistance R in magnetic field H as R ~ H^0.75 up to 56 T with Shubnikov-De Haas oscillations. Investigation of the non-magnetic analogue YV6Sn6 and the first principles calculations reveal these properties are relevant to the bands arising from the V-kagome layer. A magnetic transition at 5 K in GdV6Sn6 modifies the …
Exploration of rare-earth (RE)-based Kagome lattice magnets with spin-orbital entangled jeff=1/2 moments will provide new platform for investigating the exotic magnetic phases. Here, we report a new family of RE3BWO9 (RE=Pr,Nd,Gd-Ho) boratotungstates with magnetic RE3+ ions arranged on Kagome lattice, and perform its structure and magnetic characterizations. This serial compounds crystallize in hexagonal coordinated structure with space group P63 (No.173), where magnetic RE3+ ions have distorted Kagomé lattice connections within the ab plane and stacked in a AB-type fashion along c axis. The i…
A kagome lattice naturally features Dirac fermions, flat bands and van Hove singularities in its electronic structure. The Dirac fermions encode topology, flat bands favour correlated phenomena such as magnetism, and van Hove singularities can lead to instabilities towards long-range many-body orders, altogether allowing for the realization and discovery of a series of topological kagome magnets and superconductors with exotic properties. Recent progress in exploring kagome materials has revealed rich emergent phenomena resulting from the quantum interactions between geometry, topology, spin a…
Strongly correlated Kagome magnets are promising candidates for achieving controllable topological devices owing to the rich interplay between inherent Dirac fermions and correlation-driven magnetism. Here we report tunable local magnetism and its intriguing control of topological electronic response near room temperature in the Kagome magnet Fe3Sn2 using small angle neutron scattering, muon spin rotation, and magnetoresistivity measurement techniques. The average bulk spin direction and magnetic domain texture can be tuned effectively by small magnetic fields. Magnetoresistivity, in response,…
We report on the observation of a large topological Hall effect (THE) over a wide temperature region in a geometrically frustrated Fe3Sn2 magnet with a kagome-bilayer structure. We found that the magnitude of the THE resistivity increases with temperature and reaches -0.875 μΩ.cm at 380 K. Moreover, the critical magnetic fields with the change of THE are consistent with the magnetic structure transformation, which indicates that the real-space fictitious magnetic field is proportional to the formation of magnetic skyrmions in Fe3Sn2. The results strongly suggest that the large THE originates f…
We report magnetic and electrical properties for single crystals of NdMn$_6$Sn$_6$ and SmMn$_6$Sn$_6$. They crystallize into a structure which has distorted, Mn-based kagome lattices, compared to the pristine kagome lattices in heavy-rare-earth-bearing RMn$_6$Sn$_6$ compounds. They are hightemperature ferromagnets of which the R moment is parallel with the Mn moment. We observed a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) that is comparable to the ferrimagnetic, heavy-R siblings in a wide range of temperature. We conclude that their intrinsic AHE is stemming from the Mn-based kagome lattice,…
Magnetic field effects on single-particle energy bands (Hofstadter butterfly), Hall conductance, flat-band ferromagnetism, and magnetoresistance of two-dimensional Kagome lattices are studied. The flat-band ferromagnetism is shown to be broken as the flat-band has finite dispersion in the magnetic field. A metal-insulator transition induced by the magnetic field (giant negative magnetoresistance) is predicted. In the half-filled flat band, the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition and the metal-insulator one occur simultaneously at a magnetic field for strongly interacting electrons. All of th…
A fractionally quantized Berry phase is examined numerically in an anisotropic spin-1/2 XXZ model on the Kagome lattice. It is shown that the Berry phase has a fractionally quantized and non-zero value when an anisotropy is increased, which is consistent with the emergence of the tripartite entangled plaquette phase discussed by J. Carrasquilla et al. [Phys. Rev. B96, 054405 (2017)].
We study S=1 kagome antiferromagnets with isotropic Heisenberg exchange $J$ and strong easy axis single-ion anisotropy $D$. For $D \gg J$, the low-energy physics can be described by an effective $S=1/2$ $XXZ$ model with antiferromagnetic $J_z \sim J$ and ferromagnetic $J_\perp \sim J^2/D$. Exploiting this connection, we argue that non-trivial ordering into a "spin-nematic" occurs whenever $D$ dominates over $J$, and discuss its experimental signatures. We also study a magnetic field induced transition to a magnetization plateau state at magnetization 1/3 which breaks lattice translation symmet…
Exploration of the topological quantum materials with electron correlation is at the frontier of physics, as the strong interaction may give rise to new topological phases and transitions. Here we report that a family of kagome magnets RMn$_6$Sn$_6$ manifest the quantum transport properties analogical to those in the quantum-limit Chern magnet TbMn$_6$Sn$_6$. The topological transport in the family, including quantum oscillations with nontrivial Berry phase and large anomalous Hall effect arising from Berry curvature field, points to the existence of massive Dirac fermions. Our observation dem…
The orbital magnetization and its effects on the two-dimensional kagomé lattice with spin anisotropies included in the general Hund's coupling region have been theoretically studied. The results show that the strength of the Hund's coupling, as well as the spin chirality, contributes to the orbital magnetization $\mathcal{M}$. Upon varying both these parameters, it is found that the two parts of $\mathcal{M}$, i.e., the conventional part $\mathbf{M}_{c}$ and the Berry-phase correction part $\mathbf{M}_Ω$, oppose each other. The anomalous Nernst conductivity is also calculated and a peak-valley…
We study the ground state and low-lying excitations of the S=1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice at magnetization one third of the saturation. An exponential number of non-magnetic states is found below a magnetic gap. The non-magnetic excitations also have a gap above the ground state, but it is much smaller than the magnetic gap. This ground state corresponds to an ordered pattern with resonances in one third of the hexagons. The spin-spin correlation function is short ranged, but there is long-range order of valence-bond crystal type.
Electronic flat band systems are a fertile platform to host correlation-induced quantum phenomena such as unconventional superconductivity, magnetism and topological orders. While flat band has been established in geometrically frustrated structures, such as the kagome lattice, flat band-induced correlation effects especially in those multi-orbital bulk systems are rarely seen. Here we report negative magnetoresistance and signature of ferromagnetic fluctuations in a prototypical kagome metal CoSn, which features a flat band in proximity to the Fermi level. We find that the magnetoresistance i…
Recently, kagome materials have become an engrossing platform to study the interplay among symmetry, magnetism, topology, and electron correlation. The latest works on RMn6Sn6 (R = rare earth metal) compounds have illustrated that this family could be intriguing to investigate various physical phenomena due to large spin-orbit coupling and strong magnetic ordering. However, combined transport and spectroscopic studies in RMn6Sn6 materials are still limited. Here, we report magnetic, magneto-transport, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of a kagome magnet ErMn6Sn6 that u…
The kagome lattice -- a two-dimensional (2D) arrangement of corner-sharing triangles -- is at the forefront of the search for exotic states generated by magnetic frustration. Such states have been observed experimentally for Heisenberg and planar spins. In contrast, frustration of Ising spins on the kagome lattice has previously been restricted to nano-fabricated systems and spin-ice materials under applied magnetic field. Here, we show that the layered Ising magnet Dy3Mg2Sb3O14 hosts an emergent order predicted theoretically for individual kagome layers of in-plane Ising spins. Neutron-scatte…
