The CMS Silicon Strip tracker is a very large scale tracker entirely based on silicon strip detectors technology. The integration of modules, electronics, mechanics and services has been completed within the last eighteen months; first large standalone sub-structures (shells, disks, rods, petals depending on the tracker subdetector) have been integrated and verified; then they have been brought together into the final configuration. The CMS silicon tracker design and its construction is reviewed with particular emphasis on the procedures and quality checks deployed to successfully assembly several silicon strip modules and all ancillary components into these large sub-structures. An overview of the results and the lesson learned from the tracker integration are given, also in terms of failure and damage rates.
The Data Quality Monitoring (DQM) of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) silicon tracking detectors (Tracker) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is a software based system designed to monitor the detector and reconstruction performance, to identify problems and to certify the collected data for physics analysis. It uses the framework provided by the central CMS DQM as well as tools developed especially for the CMS Tracker DQM. During autumn 2008, the Silicon Strip Tracker was operated with the full CMS experiment in a comprehensive test, in the presence of the 3.8 T magnetic field produced by the CMS superconducting solenoid. The entire CMS silicon pixel detector will be replaced to operate at the High-Luminosity LHC. In this contribution, the new Tracker Endcap Pixel detector will be presented, focusing on a novel concept to provide both power and data connectivity to the modules through a disk-shaped PCB. As this part of the detector also features the longest serial powering chains in the CMS Phase-2 Inner Tracker, emphasis is put on serial powering results and the characterization of the signal integrity.

The production of silicon detector modules that will instrument the CMS Inner Tracker has nowadays reached 1300 units out of the approximately 3700 needed in total, with an overall yield close to 96%. The subsystems of the CMS silicon strip tracker were integrated and commissioned at the Tracker Integration Facility (TIF) in the period from November 2006 to July 2007. As part of the commissioning, large samples of cosmic ray data were recorded under various running conditions in the absence of a magnetic field. The feasibility of achieving faster data transmission using advanced digital modulation techniques over the current CMS Tracker analog optical link is explored. The spectral efficiency of Quadrature Amplitude Modulation -Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (QAM-OFDM) makes it an attractive option for a future implementation of the readout link. An analytical method for estimating the data-rate that can be achieved using OFDM over the current optical links is described and the first theoretical results are presented.

The pixel detector of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment consists of three barrel layers and two disks for each endcap. The detector was installed in summer 2008, commissioned with charge injections, and operated in the 3.8 T magnetic field during cosmic ray data taking. This paper reports on the first running experience and presents results on the pixel tracker performance, which are found to be in line with the design specifications of this detector. The transverse impact parameter resolution measured in a sample of high momentum muons is 18 microns.
The potential application of advanced digital communication schemes in a future upgrade of the CMS Tracker readout optical links is currently being investigated at CERN. We show experimentally that multi-Gbit/s data rates are possible over the current 40 MSamples/s analog optical links by employing techniques similar to those used in ADSL. The concept involves using one or more digitally-modulated sinusoidal carriers in order to make efficient use of the available bandwidth.

This report presents recent results on track reconstruction and alignment with the silicon tracker of the CMS experiment at the LHC, obtained with a full detector simulation. After an overview of the layout of the tracker and its material budget, the baseline algorithm for track reconstruction is discussed. The performance of the track reconstruction and its dependence on misalignment is shown. The concept for alignment of the CMS tracker, using a laser alignment system as well as three different track-based alignment algorithms, is presented.

The Front End Driver, FED, is a 9U 400mm VME64x card designed for reading out the Compact Muon Solenoid, CMS, silicon tracker signals transmitted by the APV25 analogue pipeline Application Specific Integrated Circuits. The FED receives the signals via 96 optical fibers at a total input rate of 3.4 GB/sec. The signals are digitized and processed by applying algorithms for pedestal and common mode noise subtraction. The strategies for and the performance of the CMS tracker alignment during the 2021-2022 LHC commissioning preceding the Run 3 data-taking period are described. The results of the very first tracker alignment after the pixel reinstallation, performed with cosmic ray muons recorded with the solenoid magnet off are presented. Also, the performance of the first alignment of the commissioning period with collision data events, collected at center-of-mass energy of 900 GeV, is presented. Finally, the tracker alignment effort during the final countdown to LHC Run 3 is discussed.

A Kalman Filter alignment algorithm has been applied to cosmic-ray data. We discuss the alignment algorithm and an experiment-independent implementation including outlier rejection and treatment of weakly determined parameters. Using this implementation, the algorithm has been applied to data recorded with one CMS silicon tracker endcap. Results are compared to both photogrammetry measurements and data obtained from a dedicated hardware alignment system, and good agreement is observed.

The CMS silicon tracker, consisting of 1440 silicon pixel and 15148 silicon strip detector modules, has been aligned using more than three million cosmic ray charged particles, with additional information from optical surveys. The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per layer is approximately 5 ns.
The strategies for and the performance of the CMS silicon tracking system alignment during the 2015-2018 data-taking period of the LHC are described. The alignment procedures during and after data taking are explained. Alignment scenarios are also derived for use in the simulation of the detector response. Systematic effects, related to intrinsic symmetries of the alignment task or to external constraints, are discussed and illustrated for different scenarios.
