We give a number of new characterizations of the Jiang-Su algebra Z, both intrinsic and extrinsic, in terms of C*-algebraic, dynamical, topological and K-theoretic conditions. Along the way we study divisibility properties of C*-algebras, we give a precise characterization of those unital C*-algebras of stable rank one that admit a unital embedding of the dimension-drop C*-algebra Z_{n,n+1}, and we prove a cancellation theorem for the Cuntz semigroup of C*-algebras of stable rank one.
We give a shorter proof of the fact that the Jiang-Su algebra is strongly self-absorbing. This is achieved by introducing and studying so-called unitarily suspended endomorphisms of generalized dimension drop algebras. Along the way we prove uniqueness and existence results for maps between dimension drop algebras and UHF-algebras.
Let ${\cal Z}$ be the Jiang-Su algebra and ${\cal K}$ the C*-algebra of compact operators on an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space. We prove that the corona algebra $M({\cal Z}\otimes {\cal K})/{\cal Z}\otimes {\cal K}$ has real rank zero. We actually prove a more general result.
In this paper, we give a Fraïssé theoretic proof of the result of X. Jiang and H. Su that the Jiang--Su algebra is the unique monotracial simple C*-algebra among all inductive limits of prime dimension drop algebras. We also partially recover the fact that every unital endomorphism of the Jiang--Su algebra is approximately inner.
We construct spectral triples on a class of particular inductive limits of matrix-valued function algebras. In the special case of the Jiang-Su algebra we employ a particular $AF$-embedding.
In this paper, we give a self-contained and quite elementary proof that the class of all dimension drop algebras together with their distinguished faithful traces forms a Fraïssé class with the Jiang-Su algebra as its limit. We also show that the UHF algebras can be realized as Fraïssé limits of classes of C*-algebras of matrix-valued continuous functions on $[0, 1]$ with faithful traces.
We revisit Matui-Sato's notion of property (SI) for C*-algebras and C*-dynamics. More specifically, we generalize the known framework to the case of C*-algebras with possibly unbounded traces. The novelty of this approach lies in the equivariant context, where none of the previous work allows one to (directly) apply such methods to actions of amenable groups on highly non-unital C*-algebras, in particular to establish equivariant Jiang-Su stability. Our main result is an extension of an observation by Sato: For any countable amenable group $Γ$ and any non-elementary separable simple nuclear C*…
The principal aim of this paper is to give a dynamical presentation of the Jiang-Su algebra. Originally constructed as an inductive limit of prime dimension drop algebras, the Jiang-Su algebra has gone from being a poorly understood oddity to having a prominent positive role in George Elliott's classification programme for separable, nuclear C*-algebras. Here, we exhibit an etale equivalence relation whose groupoid C*-algebra is isomorphic to the Jiang-Su algebra. The main ingredient is the construction of minimal homeomorphisms on infinite, compact metric spaces, each having the same cohomolo…

In order to realize all possible KMS-bundles on the Jiang-Su algebra, we introduce a class of C*-algebras which we call rationally approximately finite dimensional (RAF). Using these, we show that for a given proper simplex bundle $(S, π)$ with a singleton $π^{-1}(\{0\})$ and a unital separable monotracial C*-algebra $A$ absorbing the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially (for instance, the irrational rotation algebra), there exists a flow on $A$ whose KMS-bundle is isomorphic to $(S, π)$.
It is shown that every Jiang-Su stable approximately subhomogeneous C*-algebra has finite decomposition rank. Previously, it was not even known that such algebras have finite nuclear dimension. A key step in the proof is that subhomogeneous C*-algebra are locally approximated by a certain class of more tractable subhomogeneous algebras, namely, a non-commutative generalization of the class of cell complexes. The result is applied to show that Jiang-Su stable minimal Z-crossed products have finite decomposition rank.
We study strongly outer actions of discrete groups on C*-algebras in relation to (non)amenability. In contrast to related results for amenable groups, where uniqueness of strongly outer actions on the Jiang-Su algebra is expected, we show that uniqueness fails for all nonamenable groups, and that the failure is drastic. Our main result implies that if $G$ contains a copy of the free group, then there exist uncountable many, non-cocycle conjugate strongly outer actions of $G$ on any Jiang-Su stable tracial C*-algebra. Similar conclusions apply for outer actions on McDuff tracial von Neumann alg…
We investigate C*-algebras whose central sequence algebra has no characters, and we raise the question if such C*-algebras necessarily must absorb the Jiang-Su algebra (provided that they also are separable). We relate this question to a question of Dadarlat and Toms if the Jiang-Su algebra always embeds into the infinite tensor power of any unital C*-algebra without characters. We show that absence of characters of the central sequence algebra implies that the C*-algebra has the so-called strong Corona Factorization Property, and we use this result to exhibit simple nuclear separable unital C…
Let $X$ be an infinite compact metrizable space, and let $σ: X\to X$ be a minimal homeomorphism. Suppose that $(X, σ)$ has zero mean topological dimension. The associated C*-algebra $A=\mathrm{C}(X)\rtimes_σ\mathbb Z$ is shown to absorb the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal Z$ tensorially, i.e., $A\cong A\otimes\mathcal Z$. This implies that $A$ is classifiable when $(X, σ)$ is uniquely ergodic. Moreover, without any assumption on the mean dimension, it is shown that $A\otimes A$ always absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra.
We show that there is a simple separable unital (non-nuclear) tracially AF algebra $A$ which does not absorb the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal Z$ tensorially, i.e., $A \ncong A\otimes\mathcal Z$.
We show that every separable C*-algebra of real rank zero that tensorially absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra contains a dense set of generators. It follows that in every classifiable, simple, nuclear C*-algebra, a generic element is a generator.
We study actions of countable discrete amenable groups on unital separable simple nuclear Z-absorbing C*-algebras. Under a certain assumption on tracial states, which is automatically satisfied in the case of a unique tracial state, the crossed product is shown to absorb the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially.
A triangular limit algebra A is isometrically isomorphic to the tensor algebra of a C*-correspondence if and only if its fundamental relation R(A) is a tree admitting a $Z^+_0$-valued continuous and coherent cocycle. For triangular limit algebras which are isomorphic to tensor algebras, we give a very concrete description for their defining C*-correspondence and we show that it forms a complete invariant for isometric isomorphisms between such algebras. A related class of operator algebras is also classified using a variant of the Aho-Hopcroft-Ullman algorithm from computer aided graph theory.
In 2014, we determine the precise form of a continuous orthogonal form on a commutative real C$^*$-algebra. We also describe the general form of a (not-necessarily continuous) orthogonality preserving linear map between commutative unital real C$^*$-algebras. Among the consequences, we show that every orthogonality preserving linear bijection between commutative unital real C$^*$-algebras is continuous. In this note we revisit these results and their proofs with the idea of filling a gap in the arguments, and to extend the original conclusions.
Let $A$ be a simple separable unital locally approximately subhomogeneous C*-algebra (locally ASH algebra). It is shown that $A\otimes Q$ can be tracially approximated by unital Elliott-Thomsen algebras with trivial $\textrm{K}_1$-group, where $Q$ is the universal UHF algebra. In particular, it follows that $A$ is classifiable by the Elliott invariant if $A$ is Jiang-Su stable.
We describe the subfactor planar algebra of an intermediate subfactor $N\subset Q \subset M$ of an extremal subfactor $N\subset M$ of finite Jones index which is not necessarily irreducible.
We construct a functor from the category of elliptic curves to a category of noncommutative tori. Our proof is based on an isomorphism between the Sklyanin algebras and dense sub-algebras of the noncommutative tori.
The parabolic algebra A_p is the weakly closed algebra on L^2(R) generated by the unitary semigroup of right translations and the unitary semigroup of multiplication by the analytic exponential functions e^{iλx}, λ\geq 0. This algebra is reflexive with an invariant subspace lattice, Lat A_p, which is naturally homeomorphic to the unit disc (Katavolos and Power, 1997). This identification is used here to classify strongly irreducible isometric representations of the partial Weyl commutation relations. The notion of a synthetic subspace lattice is extended from commutative to noncommutative latt…
Let $A$ be a unital simple separable C*-algebra satisfying the UCT. Assume that $\mathrm{dr}(A)<+\infty$, $A$ is Jiang-Su stable, and $\mathrm{K}_0(A)\otimes \mathbb{Q}\cong \mathbb{Q}$. Then $A$ is an ASH algebra (indeed, $A$ is a rationally AH algebra).
Simple, separable, unital, monotracial and nuclear C$^*$-algebras are shown to have finite nuclear dimension whenever they absorb the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal{Z}$ tensorially. This completes the proof of the Toms-Winter conjecture in the unique trace case.
Let $G$ be a finite group, $A$ a unital separable finite simple nuclear C*-algebra, and $α$ an action of $G$ on $A$. Assume that $A$ absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal{Z}$, the extremal boundary of the trace space of $A$ is compact and finite dimensional and that $α$ fixes any tracial state of $A$. Then tsr$(A \rtimes_αG) = 1$. In particular, when $A$ has a unique tracial state, we conclude it without above conditons on a tracial state space of $A$.
We realize the Jiang-Su algebra, all UHF algebras, and the hyperfinite II$_{1}$ factor as Fraïssé limits of suitable classes of structures. Moreover by means of Fraïssé theory we provide new examples of AF algebras with strong homogeneity properties. As a consequence of our analysis we deduce Ramsey-theoretic results about the class of full-matrix algebras.
We show that the Fraïssé limit of a category of unital separable $C^*$-algebras which is sufficiently closed under tensor products of its objects and morphisms is strongly self-absorbing, given that it has approximate inner half-flip. We use this connection between Fraïssé limits and strongly self-absorbing $C^*$-algebras to give a self-contained and rather elementary proof for the well known fact that the Jiang-Su algebra is strongly self-absorbing.
We prove that every 2-local derivation from the algebra $M_n(\mathcal{A})(n>2)$ into its bimodule $M_n(\mathcal{M})$ is a derivation, where $\mathcal{A}$ is a unital Banach algebra and $\mathcal{M}$ is a unital $\mathcal{A}$-bimodule such that each Jordan derivation from $\mathcal{A}$ into $\mathcal{M}$ is an inner derivation, and that every 2-local derivation on a C*-algebra with a faithful traceable representation is a derivation. We also characterize local and 2-local Lie derivations on some algebras such as von Neumann algebras, nest algebras, Jiang-Su algebra and UHF algebras.
A linear map between matrix algebras corresponds to the Choi matrix in the tensor product of two matrix algebras, whose definition depends on the matrix units. Paulsen and Shultz [J. Math. Phys. {\bf 54} (2013), 072201] considered the question if one can replace matrix units by another basis of matrix algebras in the definition of Choi matrix to retain the correspondence between complete positivity of maps and positivity of Choi matrices, and gave a sufficient condition on basis under which this is true. In this note, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions, to see that the Paulsen--Shu…
We study a class of stably projectionless simple C*-algebras which may be viewed as having generalized tracial rank one in analogy with the unital case. Some structural question concerning these simple C*-algebras are studied. The paper also serves as a technical support for the classification of separable stably projectionless simple amenable Jiang-Su stable C*-algebras.
In this paper, we prove a general version of Thomsen-Li's Theorem--a Krein-Milman type theorem for C*-algebras. To be precise, for a Markov operator on $C[0,1]$ which preserves certain subspace of $C[0,1]$, we approximate it by an average of homomorphisms on $C[0,1]$ in the strong operator topology, additionally we require that this average also preserves the same subspace. Such results could be useful for constructing homomorphisms for subhomogeneous C*-algebras.
Jordan operator algebras are norm-closed spaces of operators on a Hilbert space with a^2 in A for all a in A. In two recent papers by the authors and Neal, a theory for these spaces was developed. It was shown there that much of the theory of associative operator algebras, in particularly surprisingly much of the associative theory from several recent papers of the first author and coauthors, generalizes to Jordan operator algebras. In the present paper we complete this task, giving several results which generalize the associative case in these papers, relating to unitizations, real positivity…
In this paper, we explicitly work out the subfactor planar algebra $P^{(N \subset Q)}$ for an intermediate subfactor $N \subset Q \subset M$ of an irreducible subfactor $N \subset M$ of finite index. We do this in terms of the subfactor planar algebra $P^{(N \subset M)}$ by showing that if $T$ is any planar tangle, the associated operator $Z^{(N \subset Q)}_T$ can be read off from $Z^{(N \subset M)}_T$ by a formula involving the so-called {\em biprojection} corresponding to the intermediate subfactor $N \subset Q \subset M$ and a scalar $α(T)$ carefully chosen so as to ensure that the formula …
