The ability of metal adsorption to transfer charge to the surface of single molecular carbon sheets is explored in this paper. Though other metals are considered we basically will deal with Lithium We concentrate on fairly small sheets and examined the minimum threshold size of a molecular surface needed to separate metals. From our quantum chemical calculations we deduce that a molecular surface of six benzene rings is needed for Lithium dimers to be separated. We further observe symmetry breaking, when two lithium atoms are adsorbed right opposite to each other on the two sides of the sheet.

The adsorption characteristics of alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal adatoms on silicene, a graphene-like monolayer structure of silicon, are analyzed by means of first-principles calculations. In contrast to graphene, interaction between the metal atoms and the silicene surface is quite strong due to its highly reactive buckled hexagonal structure. In addition to structural properties, we also calculate the electronic band dispersion, net magnetic moment, charge transfer, workfunction and dipole moment of the metal adsorbed silicene sheets. Alkali metals, Li, Na and K, adsorb to holl…
In this letter, we address magnetization switching by oxygen adsorption in porous metal-organic framework systems. To this end, we construct a simple localized spin model combined with a Langmuir-type formula for oxygen adsorption and study its finite-temperature properties using Monte Carlo simulation. We successfully explain the main features of this phenomenon, such as the discontinuous changes in magnetic states, sensitivity of the magnetic transition temperatures to oxygen pressure, and absence of singularities in adsorbed oxygen. Based on this model, we also reproduce the observed magnet…
The interaction of water molecules with metal surfaces is typically weak and as a result van der Waals (vdW) forces can be expected to be of importance. Here we account for the systematic poor treatment of vdW forces in most popular density functional theory (DFT) exchange-correlation functionals by applying accurate non-local vdW density functionals. We have computed the adsorption of a variety of exemplar systems including water monomer adsorption on Al(111), Cu(111), Cu(110), Ru(0001), Rh(111), Pd(111), Ag(111), Pt(111), and unreconstructed Au(111), and small clusters (up to 6 waters) on Cu…
Surface adsorption, which is often coupled with surface dissolution, is generally unpredictable on alloys due to the complicated alloying and dissolution effects. Herein, we introduce the electronic gradient and cohesive properties of surface sites to characterize the effects of alloying and dissolution. This enables us to build a predictive model for the quantitative determination of the adsorption energy in dissolution, which holds well for transition metals, near-surface alloys, binary alloys, and high-entropy alloys. Furthermore, this model uncovers a synergistic mechanism between the d-ba…
The time-dependent, mean-field Newns-Anderson model for a spin-polarised adsorbate approaching a metallic surface is solved in the wide-band limit. Equations for the time-evolution of the electronic structure of the adsorbate-metal system are derived and the spectrum of electronic excitations is found. The behaviour of the model is demonstrated for a set of physically reasonable parameters.
Defect engineering has arisen as a promising approach to tune and optimise the adsorptive performance of metal-organic frameworks. However, the balance between enhanced adsorption and structural stability remains an open question. Here both CO2 adsorption capacity and mechanical stability are calculated for the zirconium-based UiO-66, which is subject to systematic variations of defect scenarios. Modulator-dependence, defect concentration and heterogeneity are explored in isolation. Mechanical stability is shown to be compromised at high pressures where uptake is enhanced with an increase in d…
The adsorption of 1,4-benzenediamine (BDA) on the Au(111) surface and azobenzene on the Ag(111) surface is investigated using density functional theory (DFT) with a non-local density functional (vdW-DF) and a semi-local Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional. For BDA on Au(111), the inclusion of London dispersion interactions not only dramatically enhances the molecule-substrate binding, resulting in adsorption energies consistent with experimental results, but also significantly alters the BDA binding geometry. For azobenzene on Ag(111), the vdW-DF produces superior adsorption energies compa…
The adsorption of rare gases on metal surfaces serve as the paradigm of weak adsorption where it is typically assumed that the adsorbate occupies maximally coordinated hollow sites. Density-functional theory calculations using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method for Xe adatoms on Mg(0001), Al(111), Ti(0001), Cu(111), Pd(111), and Pt(111), show, however, that Xe prefers low-coordination on-top sites in all cases. We identify the importance of polarization and a site-dependent Pauli repulsion in actuating the site preference and the principle nature of the rare-gas atom--me…
The influence of elastic strains on the adsorption of H, O, and OH on the (111) surfaces of 8 fcc (Ni, Cu, Pd, Ag, Pt, Au, Rh, Ir) and on the (0001) surfaces of 3 hcp (Co, Zn, Cd) transition metals was analyzed by means of density functional theory calculations. To this end, surface slabs were subjected to different strain states (uniaxial, biaxial, shear, and a combination of them) up to strains dictated by the mechanical stability limits indicated by phonon calculations. It was found that the adsorption energy followed the predictions of the d-band theory but -- surprisingly -- the variation…
The hydrogen adsorption sites in MOF5 were determined using neutron powder diffraction along with first-principles calculations. The metal-oxide cluster is primarily responsible for the adsorption while the organic linker plays only a secondary role. Equally important, at low temperatures and high-concentration, H2 molecules form unique interlinked high-symmetry nano-clusters with intermolecular distances as small as 3.0 Ang. and H2-uptake as high as 10-wt%. These results hold the key to optimizing MOF materials for hydrogen storage applications and also suggest that MOFs can be used as templa…
Metal nanoparticle surfaces comprise of multiple planes with various atomic arrangements that interact with gases differently1,2. Identification of gas adsorption properties on all facets is an essential prerequisite for rational design of metal nanoparticles for catalysis, energy storage and gas sensing. Adsorbed gas molecules alter the electron density at metal surfaces3, changing the energy of the surface plasmon resonance4,5. All-optical methods using light as the excitation source can identify, in situ, gas-metal interactions in an ensemble of metal nanoparticles by measuring energy shift…
Understanding how the local environment of a single-atom catalyst affects stability and reactivity remains a significant challenge. We present an in-depth study of Cu1, Ag1, Au1, Ni1, Pd1, Pt1, Rh1, and Ir1 species on Fe3O4(001); a model support where all metals occupy the same 2-fold coordinated adsorption site upon deposition at room temperature. Surface science techniques revealed that CO adsorption strength at single metal sites differs from the respective metal surfaces and supported clusters. Charge transfer into the support modifies the d-states of the metal atom and the strength of the…
We show that a simple first-principles correction based on the difference between the singlet-triplet CO excitation energy values obtained by DFT and high-level quantum chemistry methods yields accurate CO adsorption properties on a variety of metal surfaces. We demonstrate a linear relationship between the CO adsorption energy and the CO singlet-triplet splitting, similar to the linear dependence of CO adsorption energy on the energy of the CO 2$π$* orbital found recently {[Kresse {\em et al.}, Physical Review B {\bf 68}, 073401 (2003)]}. Converged DFT calculations underestimate the CO single…
We study the dipole layer formed at metal-organic interfaces by means of first-principles calculations. Interface dipoles are monitored by calculating the work function change of Au, Ag, Al, Mg and Ca surfaces upon adsorption of a monolayer of PTCDA (3,4,9,10-perylene-tetra-carboxylic-di-anhydride), perylene or benzene molecules. Adsorption of PTCDA leads to pinning of the work function for a range of metal substrates. It gives interface dipoles that compensate for the difference in the clean metal work functions, leading to a nearly constant work function. In contrast, adsorption of benzene a…
Highly accurate methods such as coupled cluster (CC) techniques can be used for periodic systems within the framework of the method of increments. Its extension to low-dimensional conducting system is considered. To demonstrate the presented approach a clean Mg (0001) surface is selected, where the CC treatment with single and double excitations and perturbative triples is used for calculation of the surface energy. Further example concerns the adsorption energy of Xe on the metal surface. The obtained results can be used to verify performance of the approximate methods. Along with the computa…
The large number of possible structures of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their limitless potential applications has motivated molecular modelers and researchers to develop methods and models to efficiently assess MOF performance. Some of the techniques include large-scale high-throughput molecular simulations and machine learning models. Despite those advances, the number of possible materials and the potential conditions that could be used still pose a formidable challenge for model development requiring large data sets. Therefore, there is a clear need for algorithms that can efficient…
In this letter we study the valley degeneracy splitting of the transition-metal dichalcogenides monolayer by first-principles calculations. The local magnetic moments are introduced into the system when the transition-metal atoms are adsorbed to the monolayer surface. Zeeman effect arising from the local magnetic moment at transition-metal atom sites lifts the valley degeneracy. Anomalous charge, spin and valley Hall Effects can be accessed due to valley splitting when we can only excite carriers of one valley. The valley splitting depends on the direction of magnetization and thus can be tune…
The step-by-step hydrogen-terminated (SSHT) model is proposed as a model for the surfaces of metal oxides. Using this model, it is found that the vibronic coupling density (VCD) can be employed as a reactivity index for surface reactions. As an example, the regioselectivity of CO$_2$ adsorption on the Ag-loaded Ga$_2$O$_3$ photocatalyst surface is investigated based on VCD analysis. The cluster model constructed by the SSHT approach reasonably reflects the electronic structures of the Ga$_2$O$_3$ surface. The geometry of CO$_2$ adsorbed on the Ag-loaded Ga$_2$O$_3$ cluster has a bent structure…
Adsorption of the molecule CO on metallic surfaces is an important unsolved problem in Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT). We present a detailed study of carbon monoxide adsorption on fcc (111) surfaces of 3d, 4d and 5d metals using nonempirical semilocal density functionals for the exchange-correlation energy: the local-density approximation (LDA), two generalized gradient approximations or GGAs (PBE and PBEsol), and a meta-GGA (SCAN). The typical error pattern (as found earlier for free molecules and for free transition metal surfaces), in which results improve from LDA to PBE or P…
Our ability to understand and tailor metal-organic interfaces is mandatory to functionalize organic complexes for next generation electronic and spintronic devices. For magnetic data storage applications, metal-carrying organic molecules, so called single molecular magnets (SMM) are of particular interest as they yield the possibility to store information on the molecular scale. In this work, we focus on the adsorption properties of the prototypical SMM Sc3N@C80 grown in a monolayer film on the Ag(111) substrate. We provide clear evidence of a pyramidal distortion of the otherwise planar Sc3N …
We use first-principles methods to investigate the adsorption of Cu, Pb, Ag, and Mg onto a H-terminated Si surface. We show that Cu and Pb can adsorb strongly while Ag and Mg are fairly inert. In addition, two types of adsorption states are seen to exist for Pb. We also study the clustering energetics of Cu and Pb on the surface and find that while Cu clusters eagerly, Pb may prefer to form only small clusters of a few atoms. This kind of behavior of impurities is incorporated in kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of wet etching of Si. The simulation results agree with experiments supporting the …

Density functional theory $(DFT)$ studies show that doping of $3d TM$ atoms into $Mg_4^{0,+} (TMMg_3^{0,+})$ can alter the endothermic nature of molecular hydrogen adsorption on bare $Mg_4^{0,+}$. $H_2$ adsorption on $TMMg_3^{0,+}$ clusters depends on the $TM(3d)$ orbital contribution to the frontier molecular orbitals of the clusters. In $H_2TMMg_3^{0,+}$ complexes, $H_2$ is adsorbed through donation and back donation of electronic charges with $TMMg_3^{0,+}$ clusters. $H_2$ binding energy is the maximum for $NiMg_3$ (-0.76 eV) and $FeMg_3^+$ (-0.48 eV) among the neutral and cationic $TMMg_3$…
This study explores atomic and molecular adsorption on a number of early transition-metal carbides (TMC's) by means of density-functional theory calculations. Trend studies are conducted with respect to both period and group in the periodic table, choosing the substrates ScC, TiC, VC, ZrC, NbC, delta-MoC, TaC, and WC and the adsorbates H, B, C, N, O, F, NH, NH2, and NH3. Trends in adsorption strength are explained in terms of surface electronic factors, by correlating the calculated adsorption energy values with the calculated surface electronic structures. The results are rationalized with us…
The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of 3$d$ transition metal (TM) atoms (Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) adsorbed germanene are addressed using density functional theory. Based on the adsorption energy, TM atoms prefer to occupy at the hollow site for all the cases. The obtained values of the total magnetic moment vary from 0.97 $μ_B$ to 4.95 $μ_B$ in case of Sc to Mn-adsorption, respectively. A gap of 74 meV with a strongly enhanced splitting of 67 meV is obtained in case of Sc-adsorption, whereas metallic states are obtained in case of Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co. Non-m…
Efficient adsorption and segregation of Xe & Kr gases is of high importance in commercial as well as nuclear industries. Systematic ab initio calculations reveal that transition metal (TM) decorated boron doped graphene (BDG-TM) sheet can act as an efficient substrate for adsorptive capture of Xe & Kr (adatoms). Substantial enhancement in the adsorption energy (E_ads) is obtained on BDG-TM substrates and it varies as BDG-Cu > BDG-Ni > BDG-Fe > BDG-Zn. The improvement is approximately four times of the pristine BDG and twice that of the conventional metallic substrates. Badar charge analysis an…
We present a detailed study of the adsorption of CO on Cu, Rh, and Pt (111) surfaces in top and hollow sites. The study has been performed using the local density approximation, the gradient corrected functional PBE, and the hybrid Hartree-Fock density functionals PBE0 and HSE03 within the framework of generalized Kohn-Sham density functional theory using a plane-wave basis set. As expected, the LDA and GGA functionals show a tendency to favor the hollow sites, at variance with experimental findings that give the top site as the most stable adsorption site. The PBE0 and HSE03 functionals reduc…
In order to estimate the reactivity of a large number of potentially complex heterogeneous catalysts while searching for novel and more efficient materials, physical as well as data-centric models have been developed for a faster evaluation of adsorption energies compared to first-principles calculations. However, global models designed to describe as many materials as possible might overlook the very few compounds that have the appropriate adsorption properties to be suitable for a given catalytic process. Here, the subgroup-discovery (SGD) local artificial-intelligence approach is used to id…
Exploring the role of van der Waals (vdW) forces on the adsorption of molecules on extended metal surfaces has become possible in recent years thanks to exciting developments in density functional theory (DFT). Among these newly developed vdW-inclusive methods, interatomic vdW approaches that account for the nonlocal screening within the bulk [V. G. Ruiz, W. Liu, E. Zojer, M. Scheffler, and A. Tkatchenko, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 146103 (2012)] and improved nonlocal functionals [J. Klimes, D. R. Bowler, and A. Michaelides, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 22, 022201(2010)] have emerged as promising cand…

Adsorption geometry and stability of organic molecules on surfaces are key parameters that determine the observable properties and functions of hybrid inorganic/organic systems (HIOSs). Despite many recent advances in precise experimental characterization and improvements in first-principles electronic structure methods, reliable databases of structures and energetics for large adsorbed molecules are largely amiss. In this review, we present such a database for a range of molecules adsorbed on metal single-crystal surfaces. The systems we analyze include noble-gas atoms, conjugated aromatic mo…
We present a systematic theoretical investigation of the surface properties, stability and reactivity, of rock-salt type alkaline-earth metal oxides including MgO, CaO, SrO, and BaO. The accuracy of commonly used exchange-correlation density functionals (LDA, PBE, RPBE, PBEsol, BEEF-vdW and hybrid HSE) and random-phase approximation (RPA) is evaluated and compared to existing experimental values. Calculated surface energies of the four most stable surface facets under vacuum conditions: the (100) surface, the metal and oxygen terminated octopolar (111), and the (110) surfaces exhibit a monoton…
We have studied the trends in CO adsorption on close-packed metal surfaces: Co, Ni, Cu from the 3d row, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag from the 4d row and Ir, Pt, Au from the 5d row using density functional theory. In particular, we were concerned with the trends in the adsorption energy, the geometry, the vibrational properties and other parameters derived from the electronic structure of the substrate. The influence of specific changes in our setup such as choice of the exchange correlation functional, the choice of pseudopotential and size of the basis set, substrate relaxation has been carefully evaluated…
In a world where capture and separation processes represent above 10% of global energy consumption, novel porous materials, such as Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) used in adsorption-based processes are a promising alternative to dethrone the high-energy-demanding distillation. Shape and size tailor-made pores in combination with Lewis acidic sites can enhance the adsorbate-adsorbent interactions. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of adsorption is essential to designing and optimizing capture and separation processes. Herein, we analyze the adsorption behaviour of light hydrocarbons (met…
Surface adsorption is one of the fundamental processes in numerous fields, including catalysis, environment, energy and medicine. The development of an adsorption model which provides an effective prediction of binding energy in minutes has been a long term goal in surface and interface science. The solution has been elusive as identifying the intrinsic determinants of the adsorption energy for various compositions, structures and environments is non-trivial. We introduce a new and flexible model for predicting adsorption energies to metal substrates. The model is based on easily computed, int…
The adsorption of hydrogen on the polar Zn-ended ZnO(0001) surface has been investigated by density functional {\it ab-initio} calculations. An on top H(1x1) ordered overlayer with genuine H-Zn chemical bonds is shown to be energetically favorable. The H covered surface is metallic and spin-polarized, with a noticeable magnetic moment at the surface region. Lower hydrogen coverages lead to strengthening of the H-Zn bonds, corrugation of the surface layer and to an insulating surface. Our results explain experimental observations of hydrogen adsorption on this surface, and not only predict a me…
The role of catalyst support and regioselectivity of molecular adsorption on a metal oxide surface is investigated for the NO reduction on a Cu/γ-alumina heterogeneous catalyst. For the solid surface, computational models of the γ-alumina surface are constructed based on the Step-by-Step Hydrogen Termination (SSHT) approach. Dangling bonds, which appear by cutting the crystal structure of a model, are terminated stepwise with H atoms until the model has an appropriate energy gap. The obtained SSHT models exhibit the realistic infrared (IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV/Vis) spectra. Vibronic cou…
Sodium, magnesium and aluminum adatoms, which, respectively, possess one, two and three valence electrons in terms of 3s, $3s^2$, and ($3s^2$, 3p) orbitals, are very suitable for helping us understand the adsorption-induced diverse phenomena. In this study, the revealing properties of metal (Na/Mg/Al)-adsorbed graphene systems are investigated by mean of the first-principles method. The single- and double-side chemisorption cases, the various adatom concentrations, the hollow/top/valley/bridge sites, and the buckled structures are taken into account. The hollow and valley adsorptions, which, r…
Alloys present the great potential in catalysis because of their adjustable compositions, structures and element distributions, which unfortunately also limit the fast screening of the potential alloy catalysts. Machine learning methods are able to tackle the multi-variable issues but still cannot yet predict the complex alloy catalysts from the properties of pure metals due to the lack of universal descriptors. Herein we propose a transferable machine-learning model based on the intrinsic properties of substrates and adsorbates, which can predict the adsorption energies of single-atom alloys …
DFT calculation of various atomic species on graphene sheet is investigated as prototypes for formation of nano-structures on carbon nanotube (CNT) wall. We investigate computationally adsorption energies and adsorption sites on graphene sheet for a lot of atomic species including transition metals, noble metals, nitrogen and oxygen, using the DFT calculation as a prototype for CNT. The suitable atomic species can be chosen as each application from those results. The calculated results show us that Mo and Ru are bounded strongly on graphene sheet with large diffusion barrier energy. On the oth…
We present an extensive set of surface and chemisorption energies calculated using state of the art many-body perturbation theory. In the first part of the paper we consider ten surface reactions in the low coverage regime where experimental data is available. Here the random phase approximation (RPA) is found to yield high accuracy for both adsorption and surface energies. In contrast all the considered density functionals fail to describe both quantities accurately. This establishes the RPA as a universally accurate method for surface science. In the second part, we use the RPA to construct …
Results of recent density functional theory calculations for alkali metal adsorbates on close-packed metal surfaces are discussed. Single adatoms on the (111) surface of Al and Cu are studied with the self-consistent surface Green-function method by which the pure adsorbate-substrate interaction may be analyzed. Higher coverage ordered adlayers of K on Al(111), Na on Al(111), and Na on Al(001) are treated using the <em>ab-initio</em> pseudopotential plane wave method which affords the prediction of coverage dependent stable and metastable adsorbate geometries and phase transitions of the adsor…
The reduction reaction of turning Cr(VI) into Cr(III) by appropriate oxidants together with nanoscale catalysts in contaminated soil and water received significant amount of attention for its environmental benefits. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), as an emergent new type of catalysts, show great potential for simultaneous adsorption for the Cr(VI) removal. In this work, we investigated the efficiency of 3d transitional metal (from Sc to Zn) SACs in adsorption for the Cr(VI) removal via a theoretical approach. DFT calculations were used to measure the structural and energetic of Cr(VI) (H2CrO4 an…
Halogenated aromatic molecules assemble on surfaces forming both hydrogen and halogen bonds. Even though these systems have been intensively studied on flat metal surfaces, high-index vicinal surfaces remain challenging, as they may induce complex adsorbate structures. The adsorption of 2,6-dibromoanthraquinone (2,6-DBAQ) on flat and stepped gold surfaces is studied by means of van der Waals corrected density functional theory. Equilibrium geometries and corresponding adsorption energies are systematically investigated for various different adsorption configurations.~It is shown that bridge si…
Layered transition metal trichalcogenides MPX$_3$ (M: transition metal; X: S, Se) demonstrate a wide spectrum of properties and are widely proposed as effective materials for the water splitting reactions. Among these materials, NiPX$_3$ are the most promising ones due to the match their electronic structures for the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions. Here, we present first steps of a detailed theoretical description on the adsorption of water molecules on pristine and defected (chalcogen vacancies) surfaces of NiPX$_3$ and show that in all cases a physisorption takes the place with adso…
The adsorption of pentacene on Cu(221), Cu(511) and Cu(911) is investigated using density functional theory (DFT) with the self-consistent inclusion of van der Waals (vdW) interactions. Cu(211) is a vicinal of Cu(111) while Cu(511) and (911) are vicinals of Cu(100). For all the three surfaces, we found pentacene to prefer to adsorb parallel to the surface and near the steps. The addition of vdW interactions resulted in an enhancement in adsorption energies, with reference to the PBE functional, of around 2 eV. With vdWs inclusion, the adsorption energies were found to be 2.98 eV, 3.20 eV and 3…
We investigate the vibrational properties of Pt- and Pd-phthalocyanine (PtPc and PdPc) molecules on Ag(111) with high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). In the monolayer regime, both molecules exhibit long range order. The vibrational spectra prove a flat adsorption geometry. The red shift of vibrational modes and the presence of asymmetric vibrational peaks suggest a moderate interaction of the molecules with the substrate, accompanied by a static charge transfer from the metal to the molecules. The appearance of a particular vibrational mode, which (i) belongs to the $\ma…
Breathing transitions represent recently discovered adsorption-induced structural transformations between large-pore and narrow-pore conformations in bistable metal-organic frameworks, such as MIL-53. We present a multiscale physical mechanism of the dynamics of breathing transitions. We show that due to interplay between host framework elasticity and guest molecule adsorption, these transformations on the crystal level occur via layer-by-layer shear. We construct a simple Hamiltonian that describes the physics of host-host and host-guest interactions on the level of unit cells and reduces to …
This study combines surface-sensitive photoemission experiments with density functional theory (DFT) to give a microscopic description of H adsorption-induced modifications of the ZnO(10${\overline{1}}$0) surface electronic structure. We find a complex adsorption behavior caused by a strong coverage dependence of the H adsorption energies: Initially, O--H bond formation is energetically favorable and H acting as an electron donor leads to the formation of a charge accumulation layer and to surface metallization. The increase of the number of O--H bonds leads to a reversal in adsorption energie…
Cooperative adsorption of gases by porous frameworks permits more efficient uptake and removal than does the more usual non-cooperative (Langmuir-type) adsorption. Cooperativity, signaled by a step-like isotherm, is usually attributed to a phase transition of the framework. However, the class of metal-organic frameworks mmen-M$_2$(dobpdc) exhibit cooperative adsorption of CO2 but show no evidence of a phase transition. Here we show how cooperativity emerges in these frameworks in the absence of a phase transition. We use a combination of quantum and statistical mechanics to show that cooperati…
Metal-organic framework (MOFs) are nanoporous materials that could be used to capture carbon dioxide from the exhaust gas of fossil fuel power plants to mitigate climate change. In this work, we design and train a message passing neural network (MPNN) to predict simulated CO$_2$ adsorption in MOFs. Towards providing insights into what substructures of the MOFs are important for the prediction, we introduce a soft attention mechanism into the readout function that quantifies the contributions of the node representations towards the graph representations. We investigate different mechanisms for …
