We determine new bounds on the entries of Gorenstein Hilbert functions, both in any fixed codimension and asymptotically.
Our first main theorem is a lower bound for the degree $i+1$ entry of a Gorenstein $h$-vector, in terms of its entry in degree $i$. This result carries interesting applications concerning unimodality: indeed, an important consequence is that, given $r$ and $i$, all Gorenstein $h$-vectors of codimension $r$ and socle degree $e\geq e_0=e_0(r,i)$ (this function being explicitly computed) are unimodal up to degree $i+1$. This immediately gives a new proof of a theorem of Stanley that all Gorenstein $h$-vectors in codimension three are unimodal.
Our second main theorem is an asymptotic formula for the least value that the $i$-th entry of a Gorenstein $h$-vector may assume, in terms of codimension, $r$, and socle degree, $e$. This theorem broadly generalizes a recent result of ours, where we proved a conjecture of Stanley predicting that asymptotic value in the specific case $e=4$ and $i=2$, as well as a result of Kleinschmidt which concerned the logarithmic asymptotic behavior in degree $i= \lfloor \frac{e}{2} \rfloor $.
We prove that the Hilbert functions of codimension four graded Gorenstein Artin algebras R/I are unimodal provided I has a minimal generator in degree less than five. It is an open question whether all Gorenstein h-vectors in codimension four are unimodal. In this paper, we prove that Hilbert functions of all artinian codimension four Gorenstein algebras starting with (1,4,10, 20, h_4,...), where h_4\leq 34 are unimodal. Combining this with the previously known results, we obtain that all Gorenstein h-vectors (1, h_1, h_2,h_3, h_4, ....) are unimodal if h_4\leq 3.
We prove that a sequence $h$ of non-negative integers is the Hilbert function of some Artinian Gorenstein algebra with the strong Lefschetz property if and only if it is an SI-sequence. This generalizes the result by T. Harima which characterizes the Hilbert functions of Artinian Gorenstein algebras with the weak Lefschetz property. We also provide classes of Artinian Gorenstein algebras obtained from the ideal of points in $\mathbb{P}^n$ such that some of their higher Hessians have non-vanishing determinants. Consequently, we provide families of such algebras satisfying the SLP.
We prove upper and lower bounds for all the coefficients in the Hilbert Polynomial of a graded Gorenstein algebra $S=R/I$ with a quasi-pure resolution over $R$. The bounds are in terms of the minimal and the maximal shifts in the resolution of $R$ . These bounds are analogous to the bounds for the multiplicity found in \cite{S} and are stronger than the bounds for the Cohen Macaulay algebras found in \cite{HZ}.
The main goal of this paper is to characterize the Hilbert functions of all (artinian) codimension 4 Gorenstein algebras that have at least two independent relations of degree four. This includes all codimension 4 Gorenstein algebras whose initial relation is of degree at most 3. Our result shows that those Hilbert functions are exactly the so-called {\em SI-sequences} starting with (1,4,h_2,h_3,...), where $h_4 \leq 33$. In particular, these Hilbert functions are all unimodal. We also establish a more general unimodality result, which relies on the values of the Hilbert function not being too…
We describe the graded characters and Hilbert functions of certain graded artinian Gorenstein quotients of the polynomial ring which are also representations of the symmetric group. Specifically, we look at those algebras whose socles are trivial representations and whose principal apolar submodules are generated by the sum of the orbit of a power of a linear form.
In this paper we solve a problem posed by M.E. Rossi: {\it Is the Hilbert function of a Gorenstein local ring of dimension one not decreasing? } More precisely, for any integer $h>1$, $h \notin\{14+22k, \, 35+46k \ | \ k\in\mathbb{N} \}$, we construct infinitely many one-dimensional Gorenstein local rings, included integral domains, reduced and non-reduced rings, whose Hilbert function decreases at level $h$; moreover we prove that there are no bounds to the decrease of the Hilbert function. The key tools are numerical semigroup theory, especially some necessary conditions to obtain decreasing…
Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field and $M= \bigoplus_n M_n$ a finitely generated graded $R$-module, minimally generated by homogeneous elements of degree zero with a graded $R$-minimal free resolution $\mathbf{F}$. A Cohen-Macaulay module $M$ is Gorenstein when the graded resolution is symmetric. We give an upper bound for the first Hilbert coefficient, $e_1$ in terms of the shifts in the graded resolution of $M$. When $M = R/I$, a Gorenstein algebra, this bound agrees with the bound obtained in \cite{ES} in Gorenstein algebras with quasi-pure resolution. We conjecture a similar bound f…
In this paper we compute the Hilbert functions of irreducible (or smooth) and reduced arithmetically Gorenstein schemes that are twisted anti-canonical divisors on arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay schemes. We also prove some folklore results characterizing the Hilbert functions of irreducible standard determinantal schemes, and we use them to produce a new class of functions that occur as Hilbert functions of irreducible (or smooth) and reduced arithmetically Gorenstein schemes in any codimension.
Let R be a polynomial ring in r variables and D a dual ring upon which R acts as partial differential operators (classical apolarity). For a type two graded level Artinian algebras A=R/I, of socle degree j we consider the family of Artinian Gorenstein [AG] quotients of A having the same socle degree. By Macaulay duality, A corresponds to a unique 2-dimensional vector space W(A)=<F,G> of degree-j homogeneous elements (forms) in D, and each such AG quotient of A corresponds to an element $F_λ=F+λG$ in W(A), up to non-zero constant multiple. Our main result is a lower bound for the Hilbert functi…
In this paper, we extend the well-known Hilbert's syzygy theorem to the Gorenstein homological dimensions of rings. Also, we study the Gorenstein homological dimensions of direct product of rings, which gives examples of non-Noetherian rings of finite Gorenstein dimensions and infinite classical weak dimension.
In this paper, we extend the well-known Hilbert's syzygy theorem to the Gorenstein homological dimensions of rings. Also, we study the Gorenstein homological dimensions of direct products of rings. Our results generate examples of non-Noetherian rings of finite Gorenstein dimensions and infinite classical weak dimension.
Let $R = k[w, x_1,..., x_n]/I$ be a graded Gorenstein Artin algebra . Then $I = \ann F$ for some $F$ in the divided power algebra $k_{DP}[W, X_1,..., X_n]$. If $RI_2$ is a height one idealgenerated by $n$ quadrics, then $I_2 \subset (w)$ after a possible change of variables. Let $J = I \cap k[x_1,..., x_n]$. Then $μ(I) \le μ(J)+n+1$ and $I$ is said to be generic if $μ(I) = μ(J) + n+1$. In this article we prove necessary conditions, in terms of $F$, for an ideal to be generic. With some extra assumptions on the exponents of terms of $F$, we obtain a characterization for $I = \ann F$ to be gener…
We analyse the Gorenstein locus of the Hilbert scheme of $d$ points on $\mathbb{P}^n$ i.e. the open subscheme parameterising zero-dimensional Gorenstein subschemes of $\mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$. We give new sufficient criteria for smoothability and smoothness of points of the Gorenstein locus. In particular we prove that this locus is irreducible when $d\leq 13$ and find its components when $d = 14$. The proof is relatively self-contained and it does not rely on a computer algebra system. As a by--product, we give equations of the fourth secant variety to the $d$-th Veronese reembedding of $…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field and let $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$ be the open locus of the Hilbert scheme $\Hilb_{d}(\p{N})$ corresponding to Gorenstein subschemes. We prove that $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$ is irreducible for $d\le9$, we characterize geometrically its singularities for $d\le 8$ and we give some results about them when $d=9$ which give some evidence to a conjecture on the nature of the singular points in $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$.
We give an alternate proof for a theorem of Migliore and Nagel. In particular, we show that if $\mathcal H$ is an SI-sequence, then the collection of Betti diagrams for all Artinian Gorenstein $k$-algebras with the weak Lefschetz property and Hilbert function $\mathcal H$ has a unique largest element.
We prove upper bounds for the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of standard graded Gorenstein algebras. The main tool that we use is Boij-Söderberg theory to obtain a decomposition of the Betti table of a Gorenstein algebra as the sum of rational multiples of symmetrized pure tables. Our bound agrees with the one in the quasi-pure case obtained by Srinivasan [J. Algebra, vol.~208, no.~2, (1998)].
We study the minimal free resolution of the tangent cone of Gorenstein monomial curves in affine 4-space. We give the explicit minimal free resolution of the tangent cone of non-complete intersection Gorenstein monomial curve whose tangent cone has five minimal generators and show that the possible Betti sequences are $(1,5,6,2)$ and $(1,5,5,1)$. Also, we compute the Hilbert function of the tangent cone of these families as a result.
An SI-sequence is a finite sequence of positive integers which is symmetric, unimodal and satisfies a certain growth condition. These are known to correspond precisely to the possible Hilbert functions of Artinian Gorenstein algebras with the Weak Lefschetz Property, a property shared by most Artinian Gorenstein algebras. Starting with an arbitrary SI-sequence, we construct a reduced, arithmetically Gorenstein configuration $G$ of linear varieties of arbitrary dimension whose Artinian reduction has the given SI-sequence as Hilbert function and has the Weak Lefschetz Property. Furthermore, we s…
We conjecture that the set of all Hilbert functions of (artinian) level algebras enjoys a very natural form of regularity, which we call the {\em Interval Conjecture} (IC): If, for some positive integer $α$, $(1,h_1,...,h_i,...,h_e)$ and $(1,h_1,...,h_i+α,...,h_e)$ are both level $h$-vectors, then $(1,h_1,...,h_i+β,...,h_e)$ is also level for each integer $β=0,1,..., α.$ In the Gorenstein case, i.e. when $h_e=1$, we also supply the {\em Gorenstein Interval Conjecture} (GIC), which naturally generalizes the IC, and basically states that the same property simultaneously holds for any two symmetr…
The classification of local Artinian Gorenstein algebras is equivalent to the study of orbits of a certain non-reductive group action on a polynomial ring. We give an explicit formula for the orbits and their tangent spaces. We apply our technique to analyse when an algebra is isomorphic to its associated graded algebra. We classify algebras with Hilbert function (1, 3, 3, 3, 1), obtaining finitely many isomorphism types, and those with Hilbert function (1, 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1). We consider fields of arbitrary, large enough, characteristic.
In this note, we characterize the Hilbert regularity of the Stanley-Reisner ring $K[\bigtriangleup]$ in terms of the $f$-vector and the $h$-vector of a simplicial complex $\bigtriangleup$. We also compute the Hilbert regularity of a Gorenstein algebra.
In this paper, we explore a relationship between Hilbert functions and the irreducible decompositions of ideals in local rings. Applications are given to characterize the regularity, Gorensteinness, Cohen-Macaulayness and sequentially Cohen-Macaulayness of local rings.
We establish restrictions on the Hilbert function of standard graded Gorenstein algebras with only quadratic relations. Furthermore, we pose some intriguing conjectures and provide evidence for them by proving them in some cases using a number of different techniques, including liaison theory and generic initial ideals.
The Jordan type of an Artinian algebra is the Jordan block partition associated to multiplication by a generic element of the maximal ideal. We study the Jordan type for Artinian Gorenstein (AG) local algebras A, and the interaction of Jordan type with the symmetric decomposition of the Hilbert function H(A). We give examples of Gorenstein sequences H for which the family Gor(H) of AG algebras having Hilbert function H has several irreducible components, each corresponding to a symmetric decomposition of H. The component structure results from the intersection of two opposing filtrations of th…
In this article, by using the technique of gluing semigroups, we give infinitely many families of 1-dimensional local rings with non-decreasing Hilbert functions. More significantly, these are local rings whose associated graded rings are not necessarily Cohen-Macaulay. In this sense, we give an effective technique to construct large families of 1-dimensional Gorenstein local rings associated to monomial curves, which support Rossi's conjecture saying that every Gorenstein local ring has non-decreasing Hilbert function.
In this paper we study the isomorphism classes of local, Artinian, Gorenstein k-algebras A whose maximal ideal M satisfies dim_k(M^3/M^4)=1 by means of Macaulay's inverse system generalizing a recent result by J. Elias and M.E. Rossi. Then we use such results in order to complete the description of the singular locus of the Gorenstein locus of the punctual Hilbert scheme of degree 11.
By a theorem of R. Stanley, a graded Cohen-Macaulay domain $A$ is Gorenstein if and only if its Hilbert series satisfies the functional equation \[ \operatorname{Hilb}_A(t^{-1})=(-1)^d t^{-a}\operatorname{Hilb}_A(t), \] where $d$ is the Krull dimension and $a$ is the a-invariant of $A$. We reformulate this functional equation in terms of an infinite system of linear constraints on the Laurent coefficients of $\operatorname{Hilb}_A(t)$ at $t=1$. The main idea consists of examining the graded algebra $\mathcal F=\bigoplus_{r\in \mathbb{Z}}\mathcal F_r$ of formal power series in the variable $x$ …
Roughly ten years ago, the following "Gorenstein Interval Conjecture" (GIC) was proposed: Whenever $(1,h_1,\dots,h_i,\dots,h_{e-i},\dots,h_{e-1},1)$ and $(1,h_1,\dots,h_i+α,\dots,h_{e-i}+α,\dots,h_{e-1},1)$ are both Gorenstein Hilbert functions for some $α\geq 2$, then $(1,h_1,\dots,h_i+β,\dots,h_{e-i}+β,\dots,h_{e-1},1)$ is also Gorenstein, for all $β=1,2,\dots,α-1$. Since an explicit characterization of which Hilbert functions are Gorenstein is widely believed to be hopeless, the GIC, if true, would at least provide the existence of a strong, and very natural, structural property for such ba…
In this paper we study the isomorphism classes of Artinian Gorenstein local rings with socle degree three by means of Macaulay's inverse system. We prove that their classification is equivalent to the projective classification of the hypersurfaces of $\mathbb P ^{n }$ of degree three. This is an unexpected result because it reduces the study of this class of local rings to the homogeneous case. The result has applications in problems concerning the punctual Hilbert scheme $Hilb_d (\mathbb P^n)$ and in relation to the problem of the rationality of the Poincaré series of local rings.
Using Macaulay's correspondence we study the family of Artinian Gorenstein local algebras with fixed symmetric Hilbert function decomposition. As an application we give a new lower bound for cactus varieties of the third Veronese embedding. We discuss the case of cubic surfaces, where interesting phenomena occur.
Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional representation of the complex circle $\mathbb{C}^\times$ determined by a weight vector $\mathbf{a}\in\mathbb{Z}^n$. We study the Hilbert series $\operatorname{Hilb}_{\mathbf{a}}(t)$ of the graded algebra $\mathbb{C}[V]^{\mathbb{C}_{\mathbf{a}}^\times}$ of polynomial $\mathbb{C}^\times$-invariants in terms of the weight vector $\mathbf{a}$ of the $\mathbb{C}^\times$-action. In particular, we give explicit formulas for $\operatorname{Hilb}_{\mathbf{a}}(t)$ as well as the first four coefficients of the Laurent expansion of $\operatorname{Hilb}_{\mathbf{a}}(t)$ at $…
A Gorenstein A-algebra R of codimension 2 is a perfect finite A-algebra such that R=Ext^2(R,A) holds as R-modules, A being a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with dim(A)-dim_A(R)=2. I prove a structure theorem for these algebras improving on an old theorem of M. Grassi. Special attention is paid to the question how the ring structure of R is encoded in its Hilbert resolution. It is shown that R is automatically a ring once one imposes a weak depth condition on a determinantal ideal derived from a presentation matrix of R over A. The interplay of Gorenstein algebras and Koszul modules as introduced by…
In this paper we study the Hilbert function HR of one-dimensional semigroup rings R = k[[S]]. For some classes of semigroups, by means of the notion of support of the elements in S, we give conditions on the generators of S in order to have decreasing HR. When the embedding dimension v and the multiplicity e verify v + 3 ? e ? v + 4, the decrease of HR gives explicit description of the Apery set of S. In particular for e = v+3, we classify the semigroups with e = 13 and HR decreasing, further we show that HR is non-decreasing if e < 12. Finally we deduce that HR is non-decreasing for every Gor…
In this paper I investigate minimal surfaces of general type with p_g=5, q=0 for which the 1-canonical map is a birational morphism onto a surface in P^4 (so called canonical surfaces in P^4) via a structure theorem for the Hilbert resolutions of the canonical rings of the afore-mentioned surfaces, viewed as Gorenstein algebras of codimension 2 over the homogeneous coordinate ring of P^4. I discuss how the ring structure of such an algebra is encoded in its resolution. Among other things I show how this method can be applied to analyze the moduli space of canonical surfaces with p_g=5, q=0, K^…
We study the problem of whether an arbitrary codimension three graded artinian Gorenstein algebra has the Weak Lefschetz Property. We reduce this problem to checking whether it holds for all compressed Gorenstein algebras of odd socle degree. In the first open case, namely Hilbert function (1,3,6,6,3,1), we give a complete answer in every characteristic by translating the problem to one of studying geometric aspects of certain morphisms from $\mathbb P^2$ to $\mathbb P^3$, and Hesse configurations in $\mathbb P^2$.
Codimension two Artinian algebras $A$ have the strong and weak Lefschetz properties provided the characteristic is zero or greater than the socle degree. It is open to what extent such results might extend to codimension three AG algebras - the most promising results so far have concerned the weak Lefschetz property for such algebras. We here show that every standard-graded codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ having low maximum value of the Hilbert function - at most six - has the strong Lefschetz property, provided that the characteristic is zero. When the characteristic is grea…
This note is devoted to the study of the links between the Hilbert function of a subscheme X of the projective space, and its geometric properties. We will assume that X is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, which allows us to characterize its Hilbert function by a d integers, where d is the degree of X. We study in this context the geometric description of special linear systems of dimension maximal with respect to their degree on projective Gorenstein curves.
We study Hilbert functions of maximal Cohen-Macaulay(=CM) modules over CM local rings. We show that if $A$ is a hypersurface ring with dimension $d > 0$ then the Hilbert function of $M$ \wrt $\m$ is non-decreasing. If $A = Q/(f)$ for some regular local ring $Q$, we determine a lower bound for $e_0(M)$ and $e_1(M)$. We analyze the case when equality holds and prove that in this case $G(M)$ is CM. Furthermore in this case we also determine the Hilbert function of $M$. When $A$ is Gorenstein then $M$ is the first syzygy of $S^A(M) = (\Syz^{A}_{1}(M^*))^*$. A relation between the second Hilbert co…
The goal of this paper is to develop tools to study maximal families of Gorenstein quotients A of a polynomial ring R. We prove a very general Theorem on deformations of the homogeneous coordinate ring of a scheme Proj(A) which is defined as the degeneracy locus of a regular section of the dual of some sheaf M^~ of rank r supported on say an arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme Proj(B) of Proj(R). Under certain conditions (notably; M maximally Cohen-Macaulay and the top exterior power of M^~ a twist of the canonical sheaf), then A is Gorenstein, and under additional assumptions, we show the…
In this thesis we consider the geometry of the Hilbert scheme of points in P^n, concentrating on the locus of points corresponding to the Gorenstein subschemes of P^n. New results are given, most importantly we provide tools for constructing flat families and analysis of finite Gorenstein algebras and expose their efficiency by proving smoothability of certain families of algebras. Much of the existing theory and folklore is reviewed, providing a micro-encyclopaedic reference.
We study a number of conditions on the Hilbert function of a level artinian algebra which imply the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). Possibly the most important open case is whether a codimension 3 SI-sequence forces the WLP for level algebras. In other words, does every codimension 3 Gorenstein algebra have the WLP? We give some new partial answers to this old question: we prove an affirmative answer when the initial degree is 2, or when the Hilbert function is relatively small. Then we give a complete answer to the question of what is the largest socle degree forcing the WLP.
In the paper, by the singular Riemann-Roch theorem, it is proved that the class of the e-th Frobenius power can be described using the class of the canonical module for a normal local ring of positive characteristic. As a corollary, we prove that the coefficient of the second term of the Hilbert-Kunz function of a finitely generated A-module M vanishes if A is a Q-Gorenstein ring and M is of finite projective dimension. For a normal algebraic variety X over a perfect field of positive characteristic, it is proved that the first Chern class of the direct image of the structure sheaf via e-th Fr…
Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring with residue field k and assume that it is not Gorenstein. In the minimal injective resolution of R, the injective envelope E of the residue field appears as a summand in every degree starting from the depth of R. The number of copies of E in degree i equals the k-vector space dimension of the cohomology module Ext^i(k,R). These dimensions, known as Bass numbers, form an infinite sequence of invariants of R about which little is known. We prove that it is non-decreasing and grows exponentially if R is Golod, a non-trivial fiber product, or Teter, or…
Let $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ be a complete intersection ring of dimension $d$ and let $I$ be an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal. Let $M$ be a maximal \CM \ $A$-module. For $i = 0,1,\cdots,d$, let $e_i^I(M)$ denote the $i^{th}$ Hilbert -coefficient of $M$ with respect to $I$. We prove that for $i = 0, 1, 2$, the function $j \mapsto e_i^I(Syz_j^A(M))$ is of quasi-polynomial type with period $2$. Let $G_I(M)$ be the associated graded module of $M$ with respect to $I$. If $G_I(A)$ is Cohen-Macaulay and $\dim A \leq 2$ we also prove that the functions $j \mapsto depth \ G_I(Syz^A_{2j+i}(M))$ are eventually …
