The non-standard Schwinger fermionic representation of the unitary group is studied by using $n$-fermion operators. One finds that the Schwinger fermionic representation of the U(n) group is not unique when $n\ge 3$. In general, based on $n$-fermion operators, the non-standard Schwinger fermionic representation of the U(n) group can be established in a uniform approach, where all the generators commute with the total number operators. The Schwinger fermionic representation of $U(C^{m}_{n})$ group is also discussed.
We introduce a self-consistent theoretical framework associated with the Schwinger unitary operators whose basic mathematical rules embrace a new uncertainty principle that generalizes and strengthens the Massar-Spindel inequality. Among other remarkable virtues, this quantum-algebraic approach exhibits a sound connection with the Wiener-Kinchin theorem for signal processing, which permits us to determine an effective tighter bound that not only imposes a new subtle set of restrictions upon the selective process of signals and wavelets bases, but also represents an important complement for pro…
We consider the Schwinger's method of angular momentum addition using the SU(2) algebra with both a fermionic and a bosonic oscillator. We show that the total spin states obtained are: one boson singlet state and an arbitrary number of spin-1/2 states, the later ones are energy degenerate. It means that we have in this case supersymmetric quantum mechanics and also the addition of angular momentum for massless particles. We review too the cases of two bosonic and fermionic oscillators.
We introduce a classification scheme for the generators of open fermionic Gaussian dynamics. We simultaneously partition the dynamics along the following four lines: (1) unitary versus non-unitary, (2) active versus passive, (3) state-dependent versus state-independent, and (4) single-mode versus multi-mode. We find that only nine of these 16 types of dynamics are possible. Using this partition we discuss the consequences of imposing complete positivity on fermionic Gaussian dynamics. In particular, we show that completely positive dynamics must be either unitary (and so can be implemented wit…
In 1960 Schwinger [J. Schwinger, Proc.Natl.Acad.Sci. 46 (1960) 570- 579] proposed the algorithm for factorization of unitary operators in the finite M dimensional Hilbert space according to a coprime decomposition of M. Using a special permutation operator A we generalize the Schwinger factorization to every decomposition of M. We obtain the factorized pairs of unitary operators and show that they obey the same commutation relations as Schwinger's. We apply the new factorization to two problems. First, we show how to generate two kq-like mutually unbiased bases for any composite dimension. The…
We review the way to analytically continue the Lippmann-Schwinger bras and kets into the complex plane. We will see that a naive analytic continuation leads to nonsensical results in resonance theory, and we will explain how the non-obvious but correct analytical continuation is done. We will see that the physical basis for the non-obvious but correct analytic continuation lies in the invariance of the Hamiltonian under anti-unitary symmetries such as time reversal or PT.
We investigate work extraction from non-interacting fermions under arbitrary unitary operations and the more restricted class of Gaussian unitary operations that can be feasibly implemented. We characterize general quantum states in fermionic systems according to their ability to yield work (or not) under such transformations and study the limit for which multiple copies of passive states in fermionic systems can be activated for work extraction. We find that a sufficient number of copies of non-thermal passive states can achieve this, yielding an upper bound on the number of copies needed.
In order to realize fault-tolerant quantum computation, tight evaluation of error threshold under practical noise models is essential. While non-Clifford noise is ubiquitous in experiments, the error threshold under non-Clifford noise cannot be efficiently treated with known approaches. We construct an efficient scheme for estimating the error threshold of one-dimensional quantum repetition code under non-Clifford noise. To this end, we employ non-unitary free-fermionic formalism for efficient simulation of the one-dimensional repetition code under coherent noise. This allows us to evaluate th…
Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad equation of Poisson-type for the density matrix is considered. The Poisson jumps are assumed to be unitary operators with generators, which are quadratic in fermionic creation and annihilation operators. The explicit dynamics of the density matrix moments and Markovian multi-time ordered correlation functions is obtained.
We introduce a scheme for efficiently describing pure states of strongly correlated fermions in higher dimensions using unitary circuits featuring a causal cone. A local way of computing local expectation values is presented. We formulate a dynamical reordering scheme, corresponding to time-adaptive Jordan-Wigner transformation, that avoids nonlocal string operators. Primitives of such a reordering scheme are highlighted. Fermionic unitary circuits can be contracted with the same complexity as in the spin case. The scheme gives rise to a variational description of fermionic models not sufferin…
The Schwinger oscillator operator representation of SU(3) is analysed with particular reference to the problem of multiplicity of irreducible representations. It is shown that with the use of an $Sp(2,R)$ unitary representation commuting with the SU(3) representation, the infinity of occurrences of each SU(3) irreducible representation can be handled in complete detail. A natural `generating representation' for SU(3), containing each irreducible representation exactly once, is identified within a subspace of the Schwinger construction; and this is shown to be equivalent to an induced represent…

A formal analysis is conducted on the exactness of various forms of unitary coupled cluster (UCC) theory based on particle-hole excitation and de-excitation operators. Both the conventional single exponential UCC parameterization and a disentangled (factorized) version are considered. We formulate a differential cluster analysis to determine the UCC amplitudes corresponding to a general quantum state. The exactness of conventional UCC (ability to represent any state) is explored numerically and it is formally shown to be determined by the structure of the critical points of the UCC exponential…
Decoherence-free subspaces (DFSs) provide a strategy for protecting the dynamics of an open system from decoherence induced by the system-environment interaction. So far, DFSs have been primarily studied in the framework of Markovian master equations. In this work, we study decoherence-free (DF) states in the general setting of a non-Markovian fermionic environment. We identify the DF states by diagonalizing the non-unitary evolution operator for a two-level fermionic system attached to an electron reservoir. By solving the exact master equation, we show that DF states can be stabilized dynami…
The concept of the Schwinger Representation of a finite or compact simple Lie group is set up as a multiplicity-free direct sum of all the unitary irreducible representations of the group. This is abstracted from the properties of the Schwinger oscillator construction for SU(2), and its relevance in several quantum mechanical contexts is highlighted. The Schwinger representations for $SU(2), SO(3)$ and SU(n) for all $n$ are constructed via specific carrier spaces and group actions. In the SU(2) case connections to the oscillator construction and to Majorana's theorem on pure states for any spi…
We prove that the boundaries of all non-trivial 1+1 dimensional intrinsically fermionic symmetry-protected-topological phases, protected by finite on-site symmetries (unitary or anti-unitary), are supersymmetric quantum mechanical systems. This supersymmetry does not require any fine-tuning of the underlying Hamiltonian, arises entirely as a consequence of the boundary 't Hooft anomaly that classifies the phase and is related to a `Bose-Fermi' degeneracy different in nature from other well known degeneracies such as Kramers doublets.
We show that an open fermionic system coupled to continuous environment with unitary system-environment evolution can be exactly mapped onto an auxiliary system consisting of the physical fermion system and a set of discrete fermionic modes subject to non-unitary Lindblad-type system-modes evolution in such a way that reduced dynamics of the fermionic system in the two cases are the same. Conditions for equivalence of reduced dynamics in the two systems are identified and a proof is presented. The study is extension of recent work on Bose systems [D. Tamascelli, A. Smirne, S. F. Huelga, and M.…
Schwinger's finite (D) dimensional periodic Hilbert space representations are studied on the toroidal lattice ${\ee Z}_{D} \times {\ee Z}_{D}$ with specific emphasis on the deformed oscillator subalgebras and the generalized representations of the Wigner function. These subalgebras are shown to be admissible endowed with the non-negative norm of Hilbert space vectors. Hence, they provide the desired canonical basis for the algebraic formulation of the quantum phase problem. Certain equivalence classes in the space of labels are identified within each subalgebra, and connections with area-prese…
Let $\mathcal{V}=\wedge^N V$ be the $N$-fermion Hilbert space with $M$-dimensional single particle space $V$ and $2N\le M$. We refer to the unitary group $G$ of $V$ as the local unitary (LU) group. We fix an orthonormal (o.n.) basis $\ket{v_1},...,\ket{v_M}$ of $V$. Then the Slater determinants $e_{i_1,...,i_N}:= \ket{v_{i_1}\we v_{i_2}\we...\we v_{i_N}}$ with $i_1<...<i_N$ form an o.n. basis of $\cV$. Let $\cS\subseteq\cV$ be the subspace spanned by all $e_{i_1,...,i_N}$ such that the set $\{i_1,...,i_N\}$ contains no pair $\{2k-1,2k\}$, $k$ an integer. We say that the $\ketψ\in\cS$ are singl…
Quantized vortices carry the angular momentum in rotating superfluids, and are key to the phenomenon of quantum turbulence. Advances in ultra-cold atom technology enable quantum turbulence to be studied in regimes with both experimental and theoretical control, unlike the original contexts of superfluid helium experiments. While much work has been performed with bosonic systems, detailed studies of fermionic quantum turbulence are nascent, despite wide applicability to other contexts such as rotating neutron stars. In this paper, we present the first large-scale study of quantum turbulence in …
We present a study of the properties of Bargmann Invariants (BI) and Null Phase Curves (NPC) in the theory of the geometric phase for finite dimensional systems. A recent suggestion to exploit the Majorana theorem on symmetric SU(2) multispinors is combined with the Schwinger oscillator operator construction to develop efficient operator based methods to handle these problems. The BI is described using intrinsic unitary invariant angle parameters, whose algebraic properties as functions of Hilbert space dimension are analysed using elegant group theoretic methods. The BI-geometric phase connec…
We show that randomly choosing the matrices in a completely positive map from the unitary group gives a quantum expander. We consider Hermitian and non-Hermitian cases, and we provide asymptotically tight bounds in the Hermitian case on the typical value of the second largest eigenvalue. The key idea is the use of Schwinger-Dyson equations from lattice gauge theory to efficiently compute averages over the unitary group.
The string-net approach by Levin and Wen, and the local unitary transformation approach by Chen, Gu, and Wen, provide ways to classify topological orders with gappable edge in 2D bosonic systems. The two approaches reveal that the mathematical framework for 2+1D bosonic topological order with gappable edge is closely related to unitary fusion category theory. In this paper, we generalize these systematic descriptions of topological orders to 2D fermion systems. We find a classification of 2+1D fermionic topological orders with gappable edge in terms of the following set of data $(N^{ij}_k, F^{…
We study the relative entropy, in the sense of Araki, for the representation of a self-dual CAR algebra $\mathfrak{A}_{SDC}(\mathcal{H},Γ)$. We notice, for a specific choice of $f \in \mathcal{H}$, that the associated element in $\mathfrak{A}_{SDC}(\mathcal{H},Γ)$ is unitary. As a consequence, we explicitly compute the relative entropy between a quasifree state over $\mathfrak{A}_{SDC}(\mathcal{H},Γ)$ and an excitation of it with respect to the abovely mentioned unitary element. The generality of the approach, allows us to consider $\mathcal{H}$ as the Hilbert space of solutions of the classic…
We study matrix product unitary operators (MPUs) for fermionic one-dimensional (1D) chains. In stark contrast with the case of 1D qudit systems, we show that (i) fermionic MPUs do not necessarily feature a strict causal cone and (ii) not all fermionic Quantum Cellular Automata (QCA) can be represented as fermionic MPUs. We then introduce a natural generalization of the latter, obtained by allowing for an additional operator acting on their auxiliary space. We characterize a family of such generalized MPUs that are locality-preserving, and show that, up to appending inert ancillary fermionic de…
