We show that Z(N) string's BPS equations are equivalent to the Hitchin's equations (or self-duality equation) and also to the zero curvature condition. We construct a general form for BPS Z(N) string solutions for arbitrary simple gauge groups with non-trivial center. Depending on the vacuum solutions considered, the Z(N) string's BPS equations reduce to different two dimensional integrable field equations. For a particular vacuum we obtain the equation of affine Toda field theory.
We investigate BPS equations which determine the configuration of an M2-M5 bound state preserving half of the supersymmetries in the ABJM theory. We argue that the BPS equations are classically integrable, showing that they admit a Lax representation. The integrable structure of the BPS equations is closely related to that of the Nahm equations. Using this relation we formulate an efficient way of constructing solutions of the BPS equations from those of the Nahm equations. As an illustration of our method, we construct explicitly the most general solutions describing two M2-branes suspended b…
A generalized Hitchin equation was proposed as the BPS equation for a large class of four dimensional N=1 theories engineered using M5 branes. In this paper, we show how to write down the spectral curve for the moduli space of generalized Hitchin equations, and extract interesting N=1 dynamics out of it, such as deformed modui space, chiral ring relation, SUSY breaking, etc. Holomorphy plays a crucial role in our construction.
We consider BPS states in a large class of d=4, N=2 field theories, obtained by reducing six-dimensional (2,0) superconformal field theories on Riemann surfaces, with defect operators inserted at points of the Riemann surface. Further dimensional reduction on S^1 yields sigma models, whose target spaces are moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on Riemann surfaces with ramification. In the case where the Higgs bundles have rank 2, we construct canonical Darboux coordinate systems on their moduli spaces. These coordinate systems are related to one another by Poisson transformations associated to BPS s…
We construct BPS domain wall solutions of the effective action of type-IIA string theory compactified on a half-flat six-manifold. The flow equations for the vector and hypermultiplet scalars are shown to be equivalent to Hitchin's flow equations, implying that our domain walls can be lifted to solutions of ten-dimensional type-IIA supergravity. They take the form R^{1,2} x Y_7, where Y_7 is a G_2-holonomy manifold with boundaries.
This is the second article in the collection of reviews "Exact results on N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories", ed. J. Teschner. The space of vacua of class $\cal S$ theories on $R^3 \times S^1$ can be identified as the moduli space of solutions to the self-duality equations in two dimensions on Riemann surfaces studied by Hitchin. This fact plays a fundamental role for recent studies of the spectrum of BPS states in class $\cal S$ theories, and it is related to the integrable structure underlying Seiberg-Witten theory of theories of class $\cal S$. This article reviews important aspects of the …
We reconsider string and domain wall central charges in N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions in presence of the Omega background in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit. Existence of these charges entails presence of the corresponding topological defects in the theory - vortices and domain walls. In spirit of the 4d/2d duality we discuss the worldsheet low energy effective theory living on the BPS vortex in N=2 Supersymmetric Quantum Chromodynamics (SQCD). We discuss some aspects of the brane realization of the dualities between various quantum integrable models. A chain of such…
We present a sigma model field theoretic realization of Hitchin's generalized complex geometry, which recently has been shown to be relevant in compactifications of superstring theory with fluxes. Hitchin sigma model is closely related to the well known Poisson sigma model, of which it has the same field content. The construction shows a remarkable correspondence between the (twisted) integrability conditions of generalized almost complex structures and the restrictions on target space geometry implied by the Batalin--Vilkovisky classical master equation. Further, the (twisted) classical Batal…
The precise relation between Kodaira-Spencer path integral and a particular wave function in seven dimensional quadratic field theory is established. The special properties of three-forms in 6d, as well as Hitchin's action functional, play an important role. The latter defines a quantum field theory similar to Polyakov's formulation of 2d gravity; the curious analogy with world-sheet action of bosonic string is also pointed out.
A string theoretic framework is presented for the work of Hausel and Rodriguez-Vilegas as well as de Cataldo, Hausel and Migliorini on the cohomology of character varieties. The central element of this construction is an identification of the cohomology of the Hitchin moduli space with BPS states in a local Calabi-Yau threefold. This is a summary of several talks given during the Moduli Space Program 2011 at Isaac Newton Institute.
We localize the four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on a four-sphere to the two-dimensional constrained Hitchin/Higgs-Yang-Mills (cHYM) theory on a two-sphere S^2. We show that expectation values of certain 1/8 BPS supersymmetric Wilson loops on S^2 in the 4d N=4 SYM is captured by the 2d cHYM theory. We further argue that expectation values of Wilson loops in the cHYM theory agree with the prescription "two-dimensional bosonic Yang-Mills excluding instanton contributions". Hence, we support the recent conjecture by Drukker, Giombi, Ricci and Trancanelli on the 1/8 BPS Wilson loops on…
We consider a general ansatz for solving the 2-dimensional Hitchin's equations, which arise as dimensional reduction of the 4-dimensional self-dual Yang-Mills equations, with remarkable integrability properties. We focus on the case when the gauge group G is given by a real form of SL(2,C). For G=SO(2,1), the resulting field equations are shown to reduce to either the Liouville, elliptic sinh-Gordon or elliptic sine-Gordon equations. As opposed to the compact case, given by G=SU(2), the field equations associated with the noncompact group SO(2,1) are shown to have smooth real solutions with no…
The super Yang-Mills duals of open strings attached to maximal giant gravitons are studied in perturbation theory. It is shown that non-BPS baryonic excitations of the gauge theory can be studied within the paradigm of open quantum spin chains even beyond the leading order in perturbation theory. The open spin chain describing the two loop mixing of non-BPS giant gravitons charged under an su(2) of the so(6) R symmetry group is explicitly constructed. It is also shown that although the corresponding open spin chain is integrable at the one loop order, there is a potential breakdown of integrab…
We compute three-point functions between one large classical operator and two large BPS operators at weak coupling. We consider operators made out of the scalars of N=4 SYM, dual to strings moving in the sphere. The three-point function exponentiates and can be thought of as a classical tunneling process in which the classical string-like operator decays into two classical BPS states. From an Integrability/Condensed Matter point of view, we simplified inner products of spin chain Bethe states in a classical limit corresponding to long wavelength excitations above the ferromagnetic vacuum. As a…
We outline the construction of the Atiyah-Hitchin metric on the moduli space of SU(2) BPS monopoles with charge 2, first as an algebraic curve in C^3 following Donaldson and then as a solution of the Toda field equations in the continual large N limit. We adopt twistor methods to solve the underlying uniformization problem, which by the generalized Legendre transformation yield the Kahler coordinates and the Kahler potential of the metric. We also comment on the connection between twistors and the Seiberg-Witten construction of quantum moduli spaces, as they arise in three dimensional supersym…
We examine the Toda frame formulation of the SO(3)-invariant hyper-Kahler 4-metrics, namely Eguchi-Hanson, Taub-NUT and Atiyah-Hitchin. Our method exploits the presence of a rotational SO(2) isometry, leading to the explicit construction of all three complex structures as a singlet plus a doublet. The Atiyah-Hitchin metric on the moduli space of BPS SU(2) monopoles with magnetic charge 2 is purely rotational.
The integrability of N=(2,2) dilaton supergravity in two dimensions is studied by the use of the graded Poisson Sigma model approach. Though important differences compared to the purely bosonic models are found, the general analytic solutions are obtained. The latter include minimally gauged models as well as an ungauged version. BPS solutions are an especially interesting subclass.
With the general aim to classify BPS solutions in N=2, D=5 supergravities interacting with an arbitrary number of vector, tensor and hypermultiplets, here we begin considering the most general electrostatic, spherical-symmetric BPS solutions in the presence of hypermultiplet couplings. We discuss the properties of the BPS equations and the restrictions imposed by their integrability conditions. We exhibit explicit solutions for the case of static BPS black-holes coupled to one (the so called universal) hypermultiplet.
We re-examine the threshold bound state problem on the wrong sign Taub-Nut space; the metric on which describes the relative moduli space of well separated BPS monopoles. The quantum mechanics gives rise to a continuous family of threshold bound states, in distinction to the unique one found on the Atiyah-Hitchin metric.
In the first half of this note, after briefly motivating and reviewing membrane field theories, we consider their BPS funnel solutions. We discuss some aspects of embedding M-theory fuzzy funnels in these theories. In the second half, we focus on ABJM theory and explain a test of AdS4/CFT3 based on integrability. We discuss a numerical mismatch at one loop in worldsheet perturbation theory and its possible resolutions.
The half-BPS sector of Yang-Mills theory with 16 supercharges is integrable: there is a set of commuting conserved charges, whose eigenvalues can completely identify a state. We show that these charges can be measured in the dual gravitational description from asymptotic multipole moments of the spacetime. However, Planck scale measurements are required to separate the charges of different microstates. Thus, semiclassical observers making coarse-grained measurements necessarily lose information about the underlying quantum state.
We compute a set of correlation functions of operator insertions on the 1/8 BPS Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM by employing supersymmetric localization, OPE and the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization. These correlators exhibit a simple determinant structure, are position-independent and form a topological subsector, but depend nontrivially on the 't Hooft coupling and the rank of the gauge group. When applied to the 1/2 BPS circular (or straight) Wilson loop, our results provide an infinite family of exact defect CFT data, including the structure constants of protected defect primaries of arbi…
ABJM theory in the presence of a half-BPS domain wall is dual to the D2-D4 probe brane system with nonzero worldvolume flux. The ABJM domain wall was recently shown to be integrable to lowest order in perturbation theory and bond dimension. In the present paper we show that the string theory dual of this system is integrable, namely that the string boundary conditions on the probe D4-brane preserve the integrability of the Green-Schwarz sigma model. Our result suggests that the ABJM domain wall is integrable to all loop orders and for any value of the bond dimension.

We show that the $AdS_5 \times L^{a,b,c}$ solution in type IIB theory is non-integrable. To do so, we consider a string embedding and study its fluctuations which do not admit Liouville integrable solutions. We, also, perform a numerical analysis to study the time evolution of the string and compute the largest Lyapunov exponent. This analysis indicates that the string motion is chaotic. Finally, we consider the point-like limit of the string that corresponds to BPS mesons of the quiver theory.
We propose an integrability setup for the computation of correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at higher orders in the large $N_{\text{c}}$ genus expansion and at any order in the 't Hooft coupling $g_{\text{YM}}^2N_{\text{c}}$. In this multi-step proposal, one polygonizes the string worldsheet in all possible ways, hexagonalizes all resulting polygons, and sprinkles mirror particles over all hexagon junctions to obtain the full correlator. We test our integrability-based conjecture against a non-planar four-point correlator of l…
BPS monopoles which are periodic in one of the spatial directions correspond, via a generalized Nahm transform, to solutions of the Hitchin equations on a cylinder. A one-parameter family of solutions of these equations, representing a geodesic in the 2-monopole moduli space, is constructed numerically. It corresponds to a slow-motion dynamical evolution, in which two parallel monopole chains collide and scatter at right angles.
We study the dynamics of a pair of extremal (half-BPS) black holes in $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity, as a potentially solvable model of gravitational dynamics. As a diagnosis of hidden symmetries, we ask whether the perihelion of the orbits precesses over time. We consider black hole charge vectors with arbitrary misalignment. First, we use scattering amplitude methods to compute the leading post-Newtonian correction for general mass ratios. This computation is greatly simplified by introducing a suitable on-shell superspace. Second, we study the probe limit to all orders in velocity and Newton…

We study the integrability of geodesic flow in the background of some recently discovered charged rotating solutions of supergravity in four and five dimensions. Specifically, we work with the gauged multicharge Taub-NUT-Kerr-(Anti) de Sitter metric in four dimensions, and the $U(1)^3$ gauged charged-Kerr-(Anti) de Sitter black hole solution of N = 2 supergravity in five dimensions. We explicitly construct the Killing tensors that permit separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in these spacetimes. These results prove integrability for a large class of previously known supergravity solutions…
A prescription is given for computing anomalous dimensions of single trace operators in SYM at strong coupling and large $N$ using a reduced model of matrix quantum mechanics. The method involves treating some parts of the operators as "BPS condensates" which, in certain limit, have a dual description as null geodesics on the $S^5$. In the gauge theory, the condensate is similar to a representative of the chiral ring and it is described by a background of commuting matrices. Excitations around these condensates correspond to excitations around this background and take the form of "string bits"…
We systematically study the spectrum of open strings attached to half BPS giant gravitons in the N=4 SYM AdS/CFT setup. We find that some null trajectories along the giant graviton are actually null geodesics of AdS_5x S^5, so that we can study the problem in a plane wave limit setup. We also find the description of these states at weak 't Hooft coupling in the dual CFT. We show how the dual description is given by an open spin chain with variable number of sites. We analyze this system in detail and find numerical evidence for integrability. We also discover an interesting instability of long…
We analyze detailed properties of BPS coherent states and their connection to gravity. We interpret the group integral coherent state as a path integral over auxiliary variables coupled to the elementary letters of the theory. The eigenvalues of coherent state amplitudes can be viewed as collective coordinates of giant gravitons. Inspired by the above coherent states and by the integrability, we construct a new type of coherent states in the SL(2) sectors and their cousin PSU(1,1|2) sectors, analogous to the aforementioned coherent states. The large spin and small spin limits can be obtained b…
Four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory admits interfaces that preserve integrability of the theory. It was shown that addition of fundamental hypermultiplets living on a co-dimension one defect is an example of such an interface. We consider NS5 interface as a different example of half-BPS defect in this theory and prove that integrability is generically broken already at one loop. We show that one-loop dilatation operator acting on boundary local operators does not lead to an integrable spin chain. The same is true also for D5-like and NS5-like boundaries.
The equations governing anti-self-dual and Einstein-Weyl conformal geometries can be regarded as `master dispersionless systems' in four and three dimensions respectively. Their integrability by twistor methods has been established by Penrose and Hitchin. In this note we present, in specially adapted coordinate systems, explicit forms of the corresponding equations and their Lax pairs. In particular, we demonstrate that any Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl structure is locally given by a solution to the Manakov-Santini system, and we find a system of two coupled third-order scalar PDEs for a general a…
We introduce a new wall-crossing formula which combines and generalizes the Cecotti-Vafa and Kontsevich-Soibelman formulas for supersymmetric 2d and 4d systems respectively. This 2d-4d wall-crossing formula governs the wall-crossing of BPS states in an N=2 supersymmetric 4d gauge theory coupled to a supersymmetric surface defect. When the theory and defect are compactified on a circle, we get a 3d theory with a supersymmetric line operator, corresponding to a hyperholomorphic connection on a vector bundle over a hyperkahler space. The 2d-4d wall-crossing formula can be interpreted as a smoothn…
Four dimensional N=1 theories are engineered by compactifying six dimensional (2,0) theory on a Riemann surface with regular punctures. A generalized Hitchin's equation involving two Higgs fields is proposed as the BPS equation for N=1 compactification. The puncture is interpreted as the singular boundary condition of this equation, and regular puncture is shown to be labeled by a nilpotent commuting pair. In this paper, we focus on a subset of regular puncture which is described by rotating branes representing N=2 puncture. As an application, we show that the Seiberg duality of SU(N) SQCD wit…
Twisted compactification of the 6d N=(2,0) theories on a punctured Riemann surface give a large class of 4d N=1 and N=2 gauge theories, called class S. We argue that nonperturbative dynamics of class S theories are described by 5d maximal Super-Yang-Mills (SYM) twisted on the Riemann surface. In a sense, twisted 5d SYM might be regarded as a "Lagrangian" for class S theories on R^{1,2} times S^1. First, we show that twisted 5d SYM gives generalized Hitchin's equations which was proposed recently. Then, we discuss how to identify chiral operators with quantities in twisted 5d SYM. Mesons, or ho…
We give rigorous proofs for the existence of infinitely many (non-BPS) bound states for two linear operators associated with the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations at vanishing Higgs self-coupling and for gauge group SU(2): the operator obtained by linearising the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations around a charge one monopole and the Laplace operator on the Atiyah-Hitchin moduli space of centred charge two monopoles. For the linearised system we use the Riesz-Galerkin approximation to compute upper bounds on the lowest 20 eigenvalues. We discuss the similarities in the spectrum of the linearised system and t…
The class of five integrable vortex equations discussed recently by Manton is extended so it includes the relativistic BPS Chern-Simons vortices, yielding a total of nineteen vortex equations. Not all the nineteen vortex equations are integrable, but four new integrable equations are discovered and we generalize them to infinitely many sets of four integrable vortex equations, with each set denoted by its integer order $n$. Their integrability is similar to the known cases, but give rise to different (generalized) Baptista geometries, where the Baptista metric is a conformal rescaling of the b…
The four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory exhibits rich dynamics in the presence of codimension-one conformal defects. The new structure constants of the extended operator algebra consist of one-point functions of local operators which are nonvanishing due to the defect insertion and carry nontrivial coupling dependence. We study an important class of half-BPS superconformal defects engineered by D5 branes that share three common directions with the D3 branes and involve Nahm pole configurations for the SYM fields on the D3 brane worldvolume. In the planar large $N$ li…
We construct a generalized cusped Wilson loop operator in N = 6 super Chern-Simons-matter theories which is locally invariant under half of the supercharges. It depends on two parameters and interpolates smoothly between the 1/2 BPS line or circle and a pair of antiparallel lines, representing a natural generalization of the quark-antiquark potential in ABJ(M) theories. For particular choices of the parameters we obtain 1/6 BPS configurations that, mapped on S^2 by a conformal transformation, realize a three-dimensional analogue of the wedge DGRT Wilson loop of N = 4. The cusp couples, in addi…
By replacing the ordinary product with the so called $\star$-product, one can construct an analogue of the anti-self-dual Yang-Mills (ASDYM) equations on the noncommutative $\bbR^4$. Many properties of the ordinary ASDYM equations turn out to be inherited by the $\star$-product ASDYM equation. In particular, the twistorial interpretation of the ordinary ASDYM equations can be extended to the noncommutative $\bbR^4$, from which one can also derive the fundamental strutures for integrability such as a zero-curvature representation, an associated linear system, the Riemann-Hilbert problem, etc. T…
Using relativistic quantum mechanics, we study the spectrum of a non-BPS two-particle bound state in the massive phase of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills, in the limit when one of the particles is infinitely heavier than the other. We find that the spectrum shows the exact $n^2$ degeneracy for each principal quantum number $n$, just as in the strict non-relativistic limit. This is in line with the findings of Caron-Huot and Henn, who studied the same system in the large $N$ limit with the technique of integrability and the dual conformal symmetry.
The AdS/CFT correspondence provides a rich testing ground for many important topics in theoretical physics. The earliest and most striking example of the correspondence is the conjectured duality between the energy spectrum of type IIB superstring theory on AdS_5 x S^5 and the operator anomalous dimensions of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. While there is a substantial amount of evidence in support of this conjecture, direct tests have been elusive. The difficulty of quantizing superstring theory in a curved Ramond-Ramond background is compounded by the problem of comp…
We review our proposal to generalize the standard two-dimensional flatness construction of Lax-Zakharov-Shabat to relativistic field theories in d+1 dimensions. The fundamentals from the theory of connections on loop spaces are presented and clarified. These ideas are exposed using mathematical tools familiar to physicists. We exhibit recent and new results that relate the locality of the loop space curvature to the diffeomorphism invariance of the loop space holonomy. These result are used to show that the holonomy is abelian if the holonomy is diffeomorphism invariant. These results justify …
We study the classification of 2-dimensional scale-invariant rigid special Kahler (RSK) geometries, which potentially describe the Coulomb branches of N=2 supersymmetric field theories in four dimensions. We show that this classification is equivalent to the solution of a set of polynomial equations by using an integrability condition for the central charge, scale invariance, constraints coming from demanding single-valuedness of physical quantities on the Coulomb branch, and properties of massless BPS states at singularities. We find solutions corresponding to lagrangian scale invariant theor…
We consider N=1, D=4 superconformal U(N)^{pq} Yang-Mills theories dual to AdS_5xS^5/Z_pxZ_q orbifolds. We construct the dilatation operator of this superconformal gauge theory at one-loop planar level. We demonstrate that a specific sector of this dilatation operator can be thought of as the transfer matrix for a two-dimensional statistical mechanical system, related to an integrable SU(3) anti-ferromagnetic spin chain system, which in turn is equivalent to a 2+1-dimensional string theory where the spatial slices are discretized on a triangular lattice. This is an extension of the SO(6) spin c…
We study the thermodynamics of U(N) N=4 Super Yang-Mills (SYM) on RxS^3 with non-zero chemical potentials for the SU(4) R-symmetry. We find that when we are near a point with zero temperature and critical chemical potential, N=4 SYM on RxS^3 reduces to a quantum mechanical theory. We identify three such critical regions giving rise to three different quantum mechanical theories. Two of them have a Hilbert space given by the SU(2) and SU(2|3) sectors of N=4 SYM of recent interest in the study of integrability, while the third one is the half-BPS sector dual to bubbling AdS geometries. In the pl…
We continue the analysis of hep-th/0303060 in the one-loop sector and present the complete psu(2,2|4) dilatation operator of N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. This operator generates the matrix of one-loop anomalous dimensions for all local operators in the theory. Using an oscillator representation we show how to apply the dilatation generator to a generic state. By way of example, we determine the planar anomalous dimensions of all operators up to and including dimension 5.5, where we also find some evidence for integrability. Finally, we investigate a number of subsectors of N=4 SYM in which the…
We study classical dynamics of an open string tachyon $T$ of unstable D$p$-brane coupled to the gauge field $A_μ$. In the vacuum with vanishing potential, V=0, two fluid-like degrees of freedom, string fluid and tachyon matter, survive the tachyon condensation. We offer general analysis of the associated Hamiltonian dynamics in arbitrary background. The canonical field equations are organized into two sets, fluid equations of motion augmented by an integrability condition. We show that a large class of motionless and degenerate family of classical solutions exist and represent arbitrary transv…
We consider the strong coupling limit of 4-point functions of heavy operators in N=4 SYM dual to strings with no spin in AdS. We restrict our discussion for operators inserted on a line. The string computation factorizes into a state-dependent sphere part and a universal AdS contribution which depends only on the dimensions of the operators and the cross ratios. We use the integrability of the AdS string equations to compute the AdS part for operators of arbitrary conformal dimensions. The solution takes the form of TBA-like integral equations with the minimal AdS string-action computed by a c…
Planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (N=4 SYM) is a special quantum field theory. A few of its remarkable features are conformal symmetry at the quantum level, evidence of integrability and, moreover, it is a prime example of the AdS/CFT duality. Triggered by Witten's twistor string theory, the past 15 years have witnessed enormous progress in reformulating this theory to make as many of these special features manifest, from the choice of convenient variables to recursion relations that allowed new mathematical structures to appear, like the Grassmannian. These methods are collect…
