We present a detailed analysis of the convergence properties of Lyapunov control for finite-dimensional quantum systems based on the application of the LaSalle invariance principle and stability analysis from dynamical systems and control theory. For a certain class of ideal Hamiltonians, convergence results are derived both pure-state and mixed-state control, and the effectiveness of the method for more realistic Hamiltonians is discussed.
As a hybrid of techniques from open-loop and feedback control, Lyapunov control has the advantage that it is free from the measurement-induced decoherence but it includes the system's instantaneous message in the control loop. Often, the Lyapunov control is confronted with time delay in the control fields and difficulty in practical implementations of the control. In this paper, we study the effect of time-delay on the Lyapunov control, and explore the possibility of replacing the control field with a pulse train or a bang-bang signal. The efficiency of the Lyapunov control is also presented t…
Quantum Lyapunov control was developed in order to transform a quantum system from arbitrary initial states to a target state. The idea is to find control fields that steer the Lyapunov function to zero as $t\rightarrow \infty$, meanwhile the quantum system is driven to the target state. In order to shorten the time required to reach the target state, we propose two designs to optimize Lyapunov control in this paper. The first design makes the Lyapunov function decrease as fast as possible with a constraint on the total power of control fields, and the second design has the same purpose but wi…
We show how to apply Lyapunov control design to the problem of entanglement creation between two atoms in distant cavities connected by optical fibers. The Lyapunov control design is optimal in the sense that the distance from the target state decreases monotonically and exponentially, and the concurrence increases accordingly. This method is far more robust than simple geometric schemes.
Lyapunov control (open-loop) is often confronted with uncertainties and errors in practical applications. In this paper, we analyze the robustness of Lyapunov control against the uncertainties and errors in quantum control systems. The analysis is carried out through examinations of uncertainties and errors, calculations of the control fidelity under influences of the certainties and errors, as well as discussions on the caused effects. Two examples, a closed control system and an open control system, are presented to illustrate the general formulism.
It was shown that quantum analysis constitutes the proper analytic basis for quantization of Lyapunov exponents in the Heisenberg picture. Differences among various quantizations of Lyapunov exponents are clarified.
Taking a two-level system as an example, we show that a strong control field may enhance the efficiency of optimal Lyapunov quantum control in [Hou et al., Phys. Rev. A \textbf{86}, 022321 (2012)] but could decrease its control fidelity. A relationship between the strength of the control field and the control fidelity is established. An extended technique, which combines free evolution and external control, is proposed to improve the control fidelity. We analytically demonstrate that the extended technique can be used to design a control law for steering a two-level system exactly to the targe…
We present detailed analysis of the convergence properties and effectiveness of Lyapunov control design for bilinear Hamiltonian quantum systems based on the application of LaSalle's invariance principle and stability analysis from dynamical systems and control theory. For a certain class of Hamiltonians, strong convergence results can be obtained for both pure and mixed state systems. The control Hamiltonians for realistic physical systems, however, generally do not fall in this class. It is shown that the effectiveness of Lyapunov control design in this case is significantly diminished.
We present a scheme to drive a finite-dimensional quantum system into the decoherence-free subspaces(DFS) by Lyapunov control. Control fields are established by Lyapunov function. This proposal works well for both closed and open quantum systems, with replacing the DFS by desired subspaces for closed systems. An example which consists of a four-level system with three degenerate states driven by three lasers is presented to gain further insight of the scheme, numerical simulations for the dynamics of the system are performed and the results are good.
A scheme to drive and manipulate a finite-dimensional quantum system in the decoherence-free subspaces(DFS) by Lyapunov control is proposed. Control fields are established by Lyapunov function. This proposal can drive the open quantum system into the DFS and manipulate it to any desired eigenstate of the free Hamiltonian. An example which consists of a four-level system with three long-lived states driven by two lasers is presented to exemplify the scheme. We have performed numerical simulations for the dynamics of the four-level system, which show that the scheme works good.
We generalize the definition of quantum Anosov properties and the related Lyapunov exponents to the case of quantum systems driven by a classical flow, i.e. skew-product systems. We show that the skew Anosov properties can be interpreted as regular Anosov properties in an enlarged Hilbert space, in the framework of a generalized Floquet theory. This extension allows us to describe the hyperbolicity properties of almost-periodic quantum parametric oscillators and we show that their upper Lyapunov exponents are positive and equal to the Lyapunov exponent of the corresponding classical parametric…
We propose a Lyapunov control design to achieve specific (or a family of) unitary time-evolution operators, i.e., quantum gates in the Schrödinger picture by tracking control. Two examples are presented. In the first, we illustrate how to realize the Hadamard gate in a single-qubit system, while in the second, the controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate is implemented in two-qubit systems with the Ising and Heisenberg interactions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the control can drive the time-evolution operator into the local equivalence class of the CNOT gate and the operator keeps in this class forever…
Based on Lyapunov control theory in closed and open systems, we propose a scheme to generate W state of many distant atoms in the cavity-fiber-cavity system. In the closed system, the W state is generated successfully even when the coupling strength between the cavity and fiber is extremely weak. In the presence of atomic spontaneous emission or cavity and fiber decay, the photon-measurement and quantum feedback approaches are proposed to improve the fidelity, which enable efficient generation of high-fidelity W state in the case of large dissipation. Furthermore, the time-optimal Lyapunov con…
A Lyapunov-based control design for natural trajectory-tracking problems is analyzed for quantum states where the analysis in the generic case is not applicable. Using dynamical systems tools we show almost global asymptotic stability for stationary target states subject to certain conditions on the Hamiltonians, and discuss effectiveness of the design when these conditions are not satisfied. For pseudo-pure target states the effectiveness of the design is studied further for both stationary and non-stationary states using alternative tools.
Classical chaos refers to the property of trajectories to diverge exponentially as time tends to infinity. It is characterized by a positive Lyapunov exponent. There are many different descriptions of quantum chaos. The one related to the notion of generalized (quantum) Lyapunov exponent is based either on qualitative physical considerations or on the so-called symplectic tomography map. The purpose of this note is to show how the definition of quantum Lyapunov exponent naturally arises in the framework of the Moyal phase space formulation of quantum mechanics and is based on the notions of qu…
The agenda of Dissipative Quantum Chaos is to create a toolbox which would allow us to categorize open quantum systems into "chaotic" and "regular" ones. Two approaches to this categorization have been proposed recently. One of them is based on spectral properties of generators of open quantum evolution. The other one utilizes the concept of Lyapunov exponents to analyze quantum trajectories obtained by unraveling this evolution. By using two quantum models, we relate the two approaches and try to understand whether there is an agreement between the corresponding categorizations. Our answer is…
Based on the Lyapunov control, we present a scheme to realize state transfer with high fidelity by only modulating the boundary spins in a quantum spin-1/2 chain. Recall that the conventional transmission protocols aim at nonstationary state (or information) transfer from the first spin to the end spin at a fixed time. The present scheme possesses the following advantages. First, the scheme does not require precise manipulations of the control time. Second, it is robust against uncertainties in the initial states and fluctuations in the control fields. Third, the controls are exerted only on t…
For a double quantum dot (DQD) system, here we propose alternative ultrafast manipulate approach: Lyapunov control method, to transfer the state from R to L on the picosecond scale, orders of magnitude faster and transfer probability higher than the previously measured electrically controlled charge- or spin-based quits. The control laws are composed of two-direction components, one is used to eliminate the dissipation in the system, another is used to transfer the state. The control theory's stability ensures the system can be transferred to the target state in high probability, and the coeff…
By Lyapunov control, we present a proposal to drive quasi-particles into a topological mode in quantum systems described by a quadratic Hamiltonian. The merit of this control is the individual manipulations on the boundary sites. We take the Kitaev's chain as an illustration for Fermi systems and show that an arbitrary excitation mode can be steered into the Majorana zero mode by manipulating the chemical potential of the boundary sites. For Bose systems, taking the noninteracting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model as an example, we illustrate how to drive the system into the edge mode. The sens…
We extend the concepts of quantum complete synchronization and phase synchronization, which are proposed firstly in [Phys. Rev. Lett, 111 103605 (2013)], to more widespread quantum generalized synchronization. The generalized synchronization can be considered as a necessary condition or a more flexible derivative of complete synchronization, and its criterion and synchronization measurement are further proposed and analyzed in this paper. As an example, we consider two typical generalized synchronizations in a designed optomechanical system. Unlike the effort to construct a special coupling sy…
This article provides a novel continuous-time state feedback control strategy to stabilize an eigenstate of the Hermitian measurement operator of a two-level quantum system. In open loop, such system converges stochastically to one of the eigenstates of the measurement operator. Previous work has proposed state feedback that destabilizes the undesired eigenstates and relies on a probabilistic analysis to prove convergence. In contrast, we here associate the state observer to an adaptive version of so-called Markovian feedback (essentially, proportional control) and we show that this leads to a…
Quantum state engineering is a central task in Lyapunov-based quantum control. Given different initial states, better performance may be achieved if the control parameters, such as the Lyapunov function, are individually optimized for each initial state, however, at the expense of computing resources. To tackle this issue, we propose an initial-state-adaptive Lyapunov control strategy with machine learning, specifically, artificial neural networks trained through supervised learning. Two designs are presented and illustrated where the feedforward neural network and the general regression neura…
This paper presents a detailed Lyapunov-based theory to control and stabilize continuously-measured quantum systems, which are driven by Stochastic Schrodinger Equation (SSE). Initially, equivalent classes of states of a quantum system are defined and their properties are presented. With the help of equivalence classes of states, we are able to consider global phase invariance of quantum states in our mathematical analysis. As the second mathematical modelling tool, the conventional Ito formula is further extended to non-differentiable complex functions. Based on this extended Ito formula, a d…
Quantum computers have been widely speculated to offer significant advantages in obtaining the ground state of difficult Hamiltonian in chemistry and physics. In this work, we first propose a Lyapunov control-inspired strategy to accelerate the well-established imaginary-time method for ground-state preparation. We also dig for the source of acceleration of the imaginary-time process under Lyapunov control with theoretical understanding and dynamic process visualization. To make the method accessible in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum era, we further propose a variational form of the algo…
A Lyapunov-based method is presented for stabilizing and controlling of closed quantum systems. The proposed method is constructed upon a novel quantum Lyapunov function of the system state trajectory tracking error. A positive-definite operator in the Lyapunov function provides additional degrees of freedom for the designer. The stabilization process is analyzed regarding two distinct cases for this operator in terms of its vanishing or non-vanishing commutation with the Hamiltonian operator of the undriven quantum system. To cope with the global phase invariance of quantum states as a result…
The control laws based on quantum Lyapunov control method are designed to prepare operators for two level open quantum systems in this paper. A novel Lyapunov function is proposed according to a matrix logarithm function. The higher accuracy and faster convergence of the novel Lyapunov function proposed are analyzed by comparing with the operator distance . We adopt three control fields, and design two types of control law forms. The first form is to use one control law to offset the influence of the dissipation, while the other one is to use all three control laws to offset the dissipation. M…
The Loschmidt echo -- also known as fidelity -- is a very useful tool to study irreversibility in quantum mechanics due to perturbations or imperfections. Many different regimes, as a function of time and strength of the perturbation, have been identified. For chaotic systems, there is a range of perturbation strengths where the decay of the Loschmidt echo is perturbation independent, and given by the classical Lyapunov exponent. But observation of the Lyapunov decay depends strongly on the type of initial state upon which an average is done. This dependence can be removed by averaging the fid…
We study, analytically and numerically, the stability of quantum motion for a classically chaotic system. We show the existence of different regimes of fidelity decay which deviate from Fermi Golden rule and Lyapunov decay.
We shortly review the progress in the domain of deterministic chaos for quantum dynamical systems. With the appropriately extended definition of quantum Lyapunov exponent we analyze various quantum dynamical maps. It is argued that, within Quantum Mechanics, irregular evolution for properly chosen observables can coexist with regular and predictable evolution of states.
We introduce a simple quantum generalization of the spectrum of classical Lyapunov exponents. We apply it to the SYK and XXZ models, and study the Lyapunov growth and entropy production. Our numerical results suggest that a black hole is not just the fastest scrambler, but also the fastest entropy generator. We also study the statistical features of the quantum Lyapunov spectrum and find universal random matrix behavior, which resembles the recently-found universality in classical chaos. The random matrix behavior is lost when the system is deformed away from chaos, towards integrability or a …
Using the symplectic tomography map, both for the probability distributions in classical phase space and for the Wigner functions of its quantum counterpart, we discuss a notion of Lyapunov exponent for quantum dynamics. Because the marginal distributions, obtained by the tomography map, are always well defined probabilities, the correspondence between classical and quantum notions is very clear. Then we also obtain the corresponding expressions in Hilbert space. Some examples are worked out. Classical and quantum exponents are seen to coincide for local and non-local time-dependent quadratic …

In this article, we propose a Lyapunov stability approach to analyze the convergence of the density operator of a quantum system. In analog to the classical probability measure for Markovian processes, we show that the set of invariant density operators is both closed and convex. We then show how to analyze the stability of this set via a candidate Lyapunov operator. We complete our analysis of the set of invariant density operators by introducing an analog of the Barbashin-Krasovskii-La Salle theorem on the dynamics of quantum systems.
The continuous-time differential Lyapunov equation is widely used in linear optimal control theory, a branch of mathematics and engineering. In quantum physics, it is known to appear in Markovian descriptions of linear (quadratic Hamiltonian, linear equations of motion) open quantum systems, typically from quantum master equations. Despite this, the Lyapunov equation is seldom considered a fundamental formalism for linear open quantum systems. In this work we aim to change that. We establish the Lyapunov equation as a fundamental and efficient formalism for linear open quantum systems that can…
