In this article, we propose a Lyapunov stability approach to analyze the convergence of the density operator of a quantum system. In analog to the classical probability measure for Markovian processes, we show that the set of invariant density operators is both closed and convex. We then show how to analyze the stability of this set via a candidate Lyapunov operator. We complete our analysis of the set of invariant density operators by introducing an analog of the Barbashin-Krasovskii-La Salle theorem on the dynamics of quantum systems.
Forward invariance of a basin of attraction is often overlooked when using a Lyapunov stability theorem to prove local stability; even if the Lyapunov function decreases monotonically in a neighborhood of an equilibrium, the dynamic may escape from this neighborhood. In this note, we fix this gap by finding a smaller neighborhood that is forward invariant. This helps us to prove local stability more naturally without tracking each solution path. Similarly, we prove a transitivity theorem about basins of attractions without requiring forward invariance. Keywords: Lyapunov function, local stabil…
This paper presents an elementary proof of stochastic stability of a discrete-time reversible Markov chain starting from a Foster-Lyapunov drift condition. Besides its relative simplicity, there are two salient features of the proof: (i) it relies entirely on functional-analytic non-probabilistic arguments; and (ii) it makes explicit the connection between a Foster-Lyapunov function and Poincaré inequality. The proof is used to derive an explicit bound for the spectral gap. An extension to the non-reversible case is also presented.
We provide Lyapunov-like characterizations of boundedness and convergence of non-trivial solutions for a class of systems with unstable invariant sets. Examples of systems to which the results may apply include interconnections of stable subsystems with one-dimensional unstable dynamics or critically stable dynamics. Systems of this type arise in problems of nonlinear output regulation, parameter estimation and adaptive control. In addition to providing boundedness and convergence criteria the results allow to derive domains of initial conditions corresponding to solutions leaving a given neig…
We introduce the notion of non-oscillation, propose a constructive method for its robust verification, and study its application to biological interaction networks (also known as, chemical reaction networks). We begin by revisiting Muldowney's result on non-existence of periodic solutions based on the study of the variational system of the second additive compound of the Jacobian of a nonlinear system. We show that exponential stability of the latter rules out limit cycles, quasi-periodic solutions, and broad classes of oscillatory behavior. We focus then on nonlinear equations arising in biol…
This paper is devoted to two issues. One is to provide Lyapunov-based tools to establish integral input-to-state stability (iISS) and input-to-state stability (ISS) for some classes of nonlinear parabolic equations. The other is to provide a stability criterion for interconnections of iISS parabolic systems. The results addressing the former problem allow us to overcome obstacles arising in tackling the latter one. The results for the latter problem are a small-gain condition and a formula of Lyapunov functions which can be constructed for interconnections whenever the small-gain condition hol…
This paper demonstrates input-to-state stability (ISS) of the SIR model of infectious diseases with respect to the disease-free equilibrium and the endemic equilibrium. Lyapunov functions are constructed to verify that both equilibria are individually robust with respect to perturbation of newborn/immigration rate which determines the eventual state of populations in epidemics. The construction and analysis are geometric and global in the space of the populations. In addition to the establishment of ISS, this paper shows how explicitly the constructed level sets reflect the flow of trajectorie…
This paper presents a novel scalable framework to solve the optimization of a nonlinear system with differential algebraic equation (DAE) constraints that enforce the asymptotic stability of the underlying dynamic model with respect to certain disturbances. Existing solution approaches to analogous DAE-constrained problems are based on discretization of DAE system into a large set of nonlinear algebraic equations representing the time-marching schemes. These approaches are not scalable to large size models. The proposed framework, based on LaSalle's invariance principle, uses convex Lyapunov f…
Asymptotic output stability (AOS) is an interesting property when addressing control applications in which not all state variables are requested to converge to the origin. AOS is often established by invoking classical tools such as Barbashin-Krasovskii-LaSalle's invariance principle or Barbalat's lemma. Nevertheless, none of these tools allow to predict whether the output convergence is uniform on bounded sets of initial conditions, which may lead to practical issues related to convergence speed and robustness. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we provide a testable sufficient…
We study stability and input-state analysis of three dimensional (3D) incompressible, viscous flows with invariance in one direction. By taking advantage of this invariance property, we propose a class of Lyapunov and storage functionals. We then consider exponential stability, induced L2-norms, and input-to-state stability (ISS). For streamwise constant flows, we formulate conditions based on matrix inequalities. We show that in the case of polynomial laminar flow profiles the matrix inequalities can be checked via convex optimization. The proposed method is illustrated by an example of rotat…
