We consider the dynamical behavior of Martin-Löf random points in dynamical systems over metric spaces with a computable dynamics and a computable invariant measure. We use computable partitions to define a sort of effective symbolic model for the dynamics. Through this construction we prove that such points have typical statistical behavior (the behavior which is typical in the Birkhoff ergodic theorem) and are recurrent. We introduce and compare some notions of complexity for orbits in dynamical systems and prove: (i) that the complexity of the orbits of random points equals the Kolmogorov-Sinaï entropy of the system, (ii) that the supremum of the complexity of orbits equals the topological entropy.
In this paper we derived a variational principle for the specific entropy on the context of symbolic dynamics of compact metric space alphabets and use this result to obtain the uniqueness of the equilibrium states associated to a Walters potential.
This paper concerns the restricted 3-body problem. By applying topological methods we give a computer assisted proof of the existence of some classes of periodic orbits, the existence of symbolic dynamics and we give a rigorous lower estimate for the topological entropy.
We consider shift spaces in which elements of the alphabet may overlap nontransitively. We define a notion of entropy for such spaces, give several techniques for computing lower bounds for it, and show that it is equal to a limit of entropies of (standard) full shifts. When a shift space with overlaps arises as a model for a discrete dynamical system with a finite set of overlapping neighborhoods, the entropy gives a lower bound for the topological entropy of the dynamical system.
We construct symbolic dynamics on sets of full measure (w.r.t. an ergodic measure of positive entropy) for $C^{1+ε}$ flows on compact smooth three-dimensional manifolds. One consequence is that the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of a compact $C^\infty$ surface has at least const $\times(e^{hT}/T)$ simple closed orbits of period less than $T$, whenever the topological entropy $h$ is positive -- and without further assumptions on the curvature.
Suppose f is a C^{1+ε} surface diffeomorphism with positive topological entropy. For every positive δstrictly smaller than the topological entropy of f we construct an invariant Borel set E such that (a) f|E has a countable Markov partition; and (b) E has full measure with respect to any ergodic invariant probability measure with entropy larger than δ. This allows us to prove the following conjecture of A. Katok: if f is C^\infty with topological entropy h>0, and if P_n(f)=#{x:f^n(x)=x}, then limsup P_n(f)/exp(nh)>0.
We survey the connections between entropy, chaos, and independence in topological dynamics. We present extensions of two classical results placing the following notions in the context of symbolic dynamics: 1. Equivalence of positive entropy and the existence of a large (in terms of asymptotic and Shnirelman densities) set of combinatorial independence for shift spaces. 2. Existence of a mixing shift space with a dense set of periodic points with topological entropy zero and without ergodic measure with full support, nor any distributionally chaotic pair. Our proofs are new and yield conclusion…
We numerically test the method of non-sequential recursive pair substitutions to estimate the entropy of an ergodic source. We compare its performance with other classical methods to estimate the entropy (empirical frequencies, return times, Lyapunov exponent). We considered as a benchmark for the methods several systems with different statistical properties: renewal processes, dynamical systems provided and not provided with a Markov partition, slow or fast decay of correlations. Most experiments are supported by rigorous mathematical results, which are explained in the paper.
A probability measure is a characteristic measure of a topological dynamical system if it is invariant to the automorphism group of the system. We show that zero entropy shifts always admit characteristic measures. We use similar techniques to show that automorphism groups of minimal zero entropy shifts are sofic.
Symbolic Extension Entropy Theorem (SEET) describes the possibility of a lossless digitalization of a dynamical system by extending it to a subshift. It gives an estimate on the entropy of symbolic extensions (and the necessary number of symbols). Unlike in the measure-theoretic case, where Kolmogorov--Sinai entropy is the estimate, in the topological setup the task reaches beyond the classical theory of entropy. Tools from an extended theory of entropy structures are needed. The main goal of this paper is to prove the SEET for actions of countable amenable groups: Let a countable amenable gro…
Let $G$ be a finitely generated amenable group. We study the space of shifts on $G$ over a given finite alphabet $A$. We show that the zero entropy shifts are generic in this space, and that more generally the shifts of entropy $c$ are generic in the space of shifts with entropy at least $c$. The same is shown to hold for the space of transitive shifts and for the space of weakly mixing shifts. As applications of this result, we show that for every entropy value $c \in [0,\log |A|]$ there is a weakly mixing subshift of $A^G$ with entropy $c$. We also show that the set of strongly irreducible s…
For a topological dynamical system $(X, T)$ we define a uniform generator as a finite measurable partition such that the symmetric cylinder sets in the generated process shrink in diameter uniformly to zero. The problem of existence and optimal cardinality of uniform generators has lead us to new challenges in the theory of symbolic extensions. At the beginning we show that uniform generators can be identified with so-called symbolic extensions with an embedding, i.e., symbolic extensions admitting an equivariant measurable selector from preimages. From here we focus on such extensions and we …
Let $G$ be the group $\mathbb{Z}^d$ or the monoid $\mathbb{N}^d$ where $d$ is a positive integer. Let $X$ be a subshift over $G$, i.e., a closed and shift-invariant subset of $A^G$ where $A$ is a finite alphabet. We prove that the topological entropy of $X$ is equal to the Hausdorff dimension of $X$ and has a sharp characterization in terms of the Kolmogorov complexity of finite pieces of the orbits of $X$. In the version of this paper that has been published in Theory of Computing Systems, the proof of Lemma 4.3 contains a confusing typographical error. This version of the paper corrects that…
In this paper, we mainly elucidate a close relationship between the topological entropy and mean dimension theory for actions of polynomial growth groups. We show that metric mean dimension and mean Hausdorff dimension of subshifts with respect to the lower rank subgroup are equal to its topological entropy multiplied by the growth rate of the subgroup. Meanwhile, we also prove the above result holds for the rate distortion dimension of subshifts with respect to the lower rank subgroup and measure entropy. Furthermore, some relevant examples are indicated.
We prove that every C1 diffeomorphism away from homoclinic tangencies is entropy expansive, with locally uniform expansivity constant. Consequently, such diffeomorphisms satisfy Shub's entropy conjecture: the entropy is bounded from below by the spectral radius in homology. Moreover, they admit principal symbolic extensions, and the topological entropy and metrical entropy vary continuously with the map. In contrast, generic diffeomorphisms with persistent tangencies are not entropy expansive and have no symbolic extensions.
We study the Hausdorff dimension of Gibbs measures with infinite entropy with respect to maps of the interval with countably many branches. We show that under simple conditions, such measures are symbolic-exact dimensional, and provide an almost sure value for the symbolic dimension. We also show that the lower local dimension dimension is almost surely equal to zero, while the upper local dimension is almost surely equal to the symbolic dimension. In particular, we prove that a large class of Gibbs measures with infinite entropy for the Gauss map have Hausdorff dimension zero and packing dime…
We afford the problem of counting the blocks of a given length made with symbols drawn from an alphabet and relate this number to Fibonacci-like recurrent relations. The recurrence polynomia allows to calculate the limit ratio of two adjacent terms and this information is used to determine the topological entropy of a discrete numbers of associate shift spaces. We then describe a scheme to build a shift space with a pre-selected entropy.
We introduce "puzzles of quasi-finite type" which are the counterparts of our subshifts of quasi-finite type (Invent. Math. 159 (2005)) in the setting of combinatorial puzzles as defined in complex dynamics. We are able to analyze these dynamics defined by entropy conditions rather completely, obtaining a complete classification with respect to large entropy measures and a description of their measures with maximum entropy and periodic orbits. These results can in particular be applied to entropy-expanding maps like (x,y)-->(1.8-x^2+sy,1.9-y^2+sx) for small s. We prove in particular the meromo…
We introduce and study the notion of a directional complexity and entropy for maps of degree 1 on the circle. For piecewise affine Markov maps we use symbolic dynamics to relate this complexity to the symbolic complexity. We apply a combinatorial machinery to obtain exact formulas for the directional entropy, to find the maximal directional entropy, and to show that it equals the topological entropy of the map. Keywords: Rotation interval, Space-time window, Directional complexity, Directional entropy;
In this note we study a class of one-dimensional Ising chain having a highly degenerated set of ground-state configurations. The model consists of spin chain having infinite-range pair interactions with a given structure. We show that the set of ground-state configurations of such a model can be fully characterized by means of symbolic dynamics. Particularly we found that the set ground- state configurations defines what in symbolic dynamics is called sofic shift space. Finally we prove that this system has a non-vanishing residual entropy (the topological entropy of the shift space), which ca…
Necessary and sufficient conditions for the symbolic dynamics of a Lorenz map to be fully embedded in the symbolic dynamics of a piecewise continuous interval map are given. As an application of this result, we describe a new algorithm for calculating the topological entropy of a Lorenz map.
The dynamics of symbolic systems, such as multidimensional subshifts of finite type or cellular automata, are known to be closely related to computability theory. In particular, the appropriate tools to describe and classify topological entropy for this kind of systems turned out to be of computational nature. Part of the great importance of these symbolic systems relies on the role they have played in understanding more general systems over non-symbolic spaces. The aim of this article is to investigate topological entropy from a computability point of view in this more general, not necessaril…
In this article, we introduce an entropy based on the formal power series expansion of the Ihara Zeta function. We find a number of inequalities based on the values of the Ihara zeta function. These new entropies are applicable in symbolic dynamics and the dynamics of billiards.
We construct countable Markov partitions for non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on compact manifolds of any dimension, extending earlier work of O. Sarig for surfaces. These partitions allow us to obtain symbolic coding on invariant sets of full measure for all hyperbolic measures whose Lyapunov exponents are bounded away from zero by a constant. Applications include counting results for hyperbolic periodic orbits, and structure of hyperbolic measures of maximal entropy.
The commonly used spatial entropy $h_{r}(\mathcal{U})$ of the multi-dimensional shift space $\mathcal{U}$ is the limit of growth rate of admissible local patterns on finite rectangular sublattices which expands to whole space $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$, $d\geq 2$. This work studies spatial entropy $h_Ω(\mathcal{U})$ of shift space $\mathcal{U}$ on general expanding system $Ω=\{Ω(n)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ where $Ω(n)$ is increasing finite sublattices and expands to $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$. $Ω$ is called genuinely $d$-dimensional if $Ω(n)$ contains no lower-dimensional part whose size is comparable to that of its $d$…

We consider the category of partially observable dynamical systems, to which the entropy theory of dynamical systems extends functorially. This leads us to introduce quotient-topological entropy. We discuss the structure that emerges. We show how quotient entropy can be explicitly computed by symbolic coding. To do so, we make use of the relationship between the category of dynamical systems and the category of graphs, a connection mediated by Markov partitions and topological Markov chains.
R. Burton and J. Steif developed a strategy to construct examples of strongly irreducible subshifts of finite type admitting several measures of maximal entropy. This strategy exploits a correspondence between equilibrium statistical mechanics and symbolic dynamics, correspondence which was later formalized by O. Häggström. In this paper, we revisit and discuss this correspondence with the aim of presenting a simplified version of it, and to expose some applications of rigorous results concerning the Potts model and the six-vertex model to symbolic dynamics, illustrating in this way of the pos…
We are concerned with sets of generic points for shift-invariant measures in the countable symbolic space. We measure the sizes of the sets by the Billingsley-Hausdorff dimensions defined by Gibbs measures. It is shown that the dimension of such a set is given by a variational principle involving the convergence exponent of the Gibbs measure and the relative entropy dimension of the Gibbs measure with respect to the invariant measure. This variational principle is different from that of the case of finite symbols, where the convergent exponent is zero and is not involved. An application is giv…
We prove that a $C^1-$generic symplectic diffeomorphism is either Anosov or the topological entropy is bounded from below by the supremum over the smallest positive Lyapunov exponent of the periodic points. We also prove that $C^1-$generic symplectic diffeomorphisms outside the Anosov ones do not admit symbolic extension and finally we give examples of volume preserving diffeomorphisms which are not point of upper semicontinuity of entropy function in $C^1-$topology.
This survey describes the recent advances in the construction of Markov partitions for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems. One important feature of this development comes from a finer theory of nonuniformly hyperbolic systems, which we also describe. The Markov partition defines a symbolic extension that is finite-to-one and onto a non-uniformly hyperbolic locus, and this provides dynamical and statistical consequences such as estimates on the number of closed orbits and properties of equilibrium measures. The class of systems includes diffeomorphisms, flows, and maps with singularities.
In the present work we investigate a new type of billiards defined inside n-simplex regions. We determine an invariant ergodic (SRB) measure of the dynamics for any dimension. In using symbolic dynamics the (KS or metric) entropy is computed and we find that the system is chaotic for all cases n > 2.
Extending work of Hochman, we study the almost-Borel structure, i.e., the nonatomic invariant probability measures, of symbolic systems and surface diffeomorphisms. We first classify Markov shifts and characterize them as strictly universal with respect to a natural family of classes of Borel systems. We then study their continuous factors showing that a low entropy part is almost-Borel isomorphic to a Markov shift but that the remaining part is much more diverse, even for finite-to-one factors. However, we exhibit a new condition which we call "Bowen type" which gives complete control of thos…
A `symbolic dynamical system' is a continuous transformation F:X-->X of a closed perfect subset X of A^V, where A is a finite set and V is countable. (Examples include subshifts, odometers, cellular automata, and automaton networks.) The function F induces a directed graph structure on V, whose geometry reveals information about the dynamical system (X,F). The `dimension' dim(V) is an exponent describing the growth rate of balls in the digraph as a function of their radius. We show: if X has positive entropy and dim(V)>1, and the system (A^V,X,F) satisfies minimal symmetry and mixing condition…
In this work we study the problem of positiveness of topological entropy for flows using pointwise dynamics. We show that the existence of a non-periodic nonwandering point of an expansive and non-singular flow with shadowing is a sufficient condition to to obtain positive topological entropy. Moreover, we can deal with flows with singularities, showing that the existence of a non-wandering, non-critical, strongly-shadowable, and uniform-expansive point implies the existence of a symbolic subshift. Finally, we discuss pointwise versions of some shadowing-type properties.

We show that in the category of effective $Z$ dynamical systems there is a universal system, i.e. one that factors onto every other effective system. In particular, for d $\geq 3$ there exist d-dimensional shifts of finite type which are universal for 1-dimensional subactions of SFTs. On the other hand, we show that there is no universal effective $Z^d$-system for $d>1$, and in particular SFTs cannot be universal for subactions of rank $d>1$. As a consequence, a decrease in entropy and Medvedev degree and periodic data are not sufficient for a factor map to exists between SFTs. We also discuss…
