We introduce a geometric evolution equation of hyperbolic type, which governs the evolution of a hypersurface moving in the direction of its mean curvature vector. The flow stems from a geometrically natural action containing kinetic and internal energy terms. As the mean curvature of the hypersurface is the main driving factor, we refer to this model as the hyperbolic mean curvature flow (HMCF). The case that the initial velocity field is normal to the hypersurface is of particular interest: this property is preserved during the evolution and gives rise to a comparatively simpler evolution equation. We also consider the case where the manifold can be viewed as a graph over a fixed manifold. Our main results are as follows. First, we derive several balance laws satisfied by the hypersurface during the evolution. Second, we establish that the initial-value problem is locally well-posed in Sobolev spaces; this is achieved by exhibiting a convexity property satisfied by the energy density which is naturally associated with the flow. Third, we provide some criteria ensuring that the flow will blow-up in finite time. Fourth, in the case of graphs, we introduce a concept of weak solutions suitably restricted by an entropy inequality, and we prove that a classical solution is unique in the larger class of entropy solutions. In the special case of one-dimensional graphs, a global-in-time existence result is established.
In this paper, we establish a curvature estimate for semi-convex solutions of Hessian equations in hyperbolic space. We also obtain a curvature estimate for admissible solutions to prescribed curvature measure type problem in hyperbolic space. A crucial ingredient in both estimates is a concavity inequality for Hessian operator.
The problem of the prescribed curvature measure is one of the important problems in differential geometry and nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we consider prescribed curvature measure problem in hyperbolic space. We obtain the existence of star-shaped k-convex bodies with prescribed (n-k)-th curvature measures (k<n) by establishing crucial C^2 regularity estimates for solutions to the corresponding fully nonlinear PDE in the hyperbolic space.
We study inverse mean curvature flow with free boundary supported on geodesic spheres in hyperbolic space. Starting from any convex hypersurface inside a geodesic ball with a free boundary, the flow converges to a totally geodesic disk in finite time. Using the convergence result, we show a Willmore type inequality.
Given a constant $k>1$, let $Z$ be the family of round spheres of radius $\textrm{artanh}(k^{-1})$ in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$, so that any sphere in $Z$ has mean curvature $k$. We prove a crucial nondegeneracy result involving the manifold $Z$. As an application, we provide sufficient conditions on a prescribed function $ϕ$ on $\mathbb{H}^3$, which ensure the existence of a ${\cal C}^1$-curve, parametrized by $\varepsilon\approx 0$, of embedded spheres in $\mathbb{H}^3$ having mean curvature $k +\varepsilonϕ$ at each point.
We introduce the shifted inverse curvature flow in hyperbolic space. This is a family of hypersurfaces in hyperbolic space expanding by $F^{-p}$ with positive power $p$ for a smooth, symmetric, strictly increasing and $1$-homogeneous curvature function $f$ of the shifted principal curvatures with some concavity properties. We study the maximal existence and asymptotical behavior of the flow for horo-convex hypersurfaces. In particular, for $0<p\leq 1$ we show that the limiting shape of the solution is always round as the maximal existence time is approached. This is in contrast to the asymptot…
We consider the dynamic property of the volume preserving mean curvature flow. This flow was introduced by Huisken who also proved it converges to a round sphere of the same enclosed volume if the initial hypersurface is strictly convex in Euclidean space. We study the stability of this flow in hyperbolic space. In particular, we prove that if the initial hypersurface is hyperbolically mean convex and close to an umbilical sphere in the $L^2$-sense, then the flow exists for all time and converges exponentially to an umbilical sphere.
We prove the existence of a complete locally Lipschitz continuous hypersurface in weak sense with prescribed Weingarten curvature and asymptotic boundary at infinity in hyperbolic space under certain assumptions.
This survey introduces to the hyperbolic unfolding correspondence that links the geometric analysis of minimal hypersurfaces with that of Gromov hyperbolic spaces. Problems caused from hypersurface singularities oftentimes become solvable on associated Gromov hyperbolic spaces. Applied to scalar curvature geometry this yields smoothing schemes that eliminate such singularities.
