We investigate spin conductance in zigzag graphene nanoribbons and propose a spin injection mechanism based only on graphitic nanostructures. We find that nanoribbons with atomically straight, symmetric edges show zero spin conductance, but nonzero spin Hall conductance. Only nanoribbons with asymmetrically shaped edges give rise to a finite spin conductance and can be used for spin injection into graphene. Furthermore, nanoribbons with rough edges exhibit mesoscopic spin conductance fluctuations with a universal value of $\mathrm{rms} G_\mathrm{s}\approx 0.4 e/4π$.
In this work spin transport in corrugated armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNR) is studied. We survey combined effects of spin-orbit interaction and surface roughness, employing the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism and four orbitals tight-binding model. We modify hopping parameters regarding bending and distance of corrugated carbon atoms. The effects of surface roughness parameters, such as roughness amplitude and correlation length, on the spin transport of the graphene nanoribbons are studied. We show that increasing surface roughness amplitude breaks the AGNR symmetry and hybridiz…
The effects of substrate on the electronic properties of Graphene remains unclear. Many theoretical and experimental efforts have been done to clarify this discrepancy. In this work, we studied the electronic transport in armchair Graphene nanoribbons (AGNR) in the presence of substrate's disorder. The three main substrate's disorders -- surface roughness, charged impurity and surface optical phonon -- are investigated. Non-Equilibrium Green's function along with the tight-binding model is employed to investigate the electronic properties of Graphene Nanoribbons. The effects of these disorders…
We theoretically investigate the one-color injection currents and shift currents in zigzag graphene nanoribbons with applying a static electric field across the ribbon, which breaks the inversion symmetry to generate nonzero second order optical responses by dipole interaction. These two types of currents can be separately excited by specific light polarization, circularly polarized lights for injection currents and linearly polarized lights for shift currents. Based on a tight binding model formed by carbon 2p$_z$ orbitals, we numerically calculate the spectra of injection coefficients and sh…
The Kekule pattern of the (anti)ferromagnetic exchange field on monolayer MoS2 can be induced by proximity to the (111) surface of BiFeO3 on both sides. The three-band tight binding model of the MoS2 layer with Kekule patterned exchange field is applied to describe the heterostructures. The tight binding model is justified by the first principle calculations. The magnetization orientations of the substrates control the pattern of the exchange field, which then switches the band structures of the lowest zigzag edge states between being metallic and insulating. The lowest four zigzag edge bands …
We explore nanoribbons from topological two-dimensional stanene as channel material in tunnel field effect transistors. This novel technological option offers the possibility to build pure one-dimensional (1D) channel devices (comprised of a 1D chain of atoms) due to localized states in correspondence of the nanoribbon edges. The investigation is based on first-principle calculations and multi-scale transport simulations to assess devices performance against industry requirements and their robustness with respect to technological issues like line edge roughness, detrimental for nanoribbons. We…
The edge physics of graphene based systems is well known to be highly sensitive to the atomic structure at the boundary, with localized zero mode edge states found only on the zigzag type termination of the lattice. Here we demonstrate that the graphene twist bilayer supports an additional class of edge states, that (i) are found for all edge geometries and thus are robust against edge roughness, (ii) occur at energies coinciding with twist induced van Hove singularities in the bulk and (iii) possess an electron density strongly modulated by the moiré lattice. Interestingly, these "moiré edge …
We investigate the diffusive electron-transport properties of charge-doped graphene ribbons and nanoribbons with imperfect edges. We consider different regimes of edge scattering, ranging from wide graphene ribbons with (partially) diffusive edge scattering to ribbons with large width variations and nanoribbons with atomistic edge roughness. For the latter, we introduce an approach based on pseudopotentials, allowing for an atomistic treatment of the band structure and the scattering potential, on the self-consistent solution of the Boltzmann transport equation within the relaxation-time appro…
Understanding thermal transport through nanoscale van der Waals interfaces is vital for addressing thermal management challenges in nanoelectronic devices. In this work, the interfacial thermal conductance (GCA) between copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) nanoribbons is reported to be on the order of 10^5 Wm-2K-1 at 300 K, which is over two orders of magnitude lower than the value predicted by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for a perfectly smooth interface between two parallelly aligned CuPc nanoribbons. Further MD simulations and contact mechanics analysis reveal that surface roughness can sign…
Effects of phonon confinement on electron transport in Si nanowire and armchair-edge graphene nanoribbon transistors: A dissipative quantum-transport study
This paper studies the lubricating properties of graphene on randomly rough Au surfaces in sliding nanofriction using molecular dynamics. It is shown that the friction and the consequent heat dissipation decrease more than an order of magnitude in the presence of graphene. The performance of graphene nanoribbons as lubricants is, however, limited because of detachment and displacement at the interface. Sliding contacts lubricated with a stretched graphene sheet exhibit low friction, but possibly also low structural stability. This suggests that the graphene-substrate adherence could be crucial…

An intrinsic electron injection model for linear band two-dimensional (2D) materials, like graphene, is presented and its coupling to a recently developed quantum time-dependent Monte Carlo simulator for electron devices, based on the use of stochastic Bohmian conditional wave functions, is explained. The simulator is able to capture the full (DC, AC, transient and noise) performance of 2D electron devices. In particular, we demonstrate that the injection of electrons with positive and negative kinetic energies is mandatory when investigating high frequency performance of linear band materials…
