We develop a Hamiltonian formalism of brane-world gravity, which singles out two preferred, mutually orthogonal directions. One is a unit twist-free field of spatial vectors with integral lines intersecting perpendicularly the brane. The other is a temporal vector field with respect to which we perform the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner decomposition of the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian. The gravitational variables arise from the projections of the spatial metric and their canonically conjugated momenta as tensorial, vectorial and scalar quantities defined on the family of hypersurfaces containing the brane. They represent the gravitons, a gravi-photon and a gravi-scalar, respectively. From the action we derive the canonical evolution equations and the constraints for these gravitational degrees of freedom both on the brane and outside it. By integrating across the brane, the dynamics also generates the tensorial and scalar projection of the Lanczos equation. The vectorial projection of the Lanczos equation arises in a similar way from the diffeomorphism constraint. Both the graviton and the gravi-scalar are continuous across the brane, however the momentum of the gravi-vector has a jump, related to the energy transport (heat flow) on the brane.
A Hamiltonian linearization of the rest-frame instant form of tetrad gravity (gr-qc/0302084), where the Hamiltonian is the weak ADM energy ${\hat E}_{ADM}$, in a completely fixed (non harmonic) 3-orthogonal Hamiltonian gauge is defined. For the first time this allows to find an explicit solution of all the Hamiltonian constraints and an associated linearized solution of Einstein's equations. It corresponds to background-independent gravitational waves in a well defined post-Minkowskian Christodoulou-Klainermann space-time.
This short note is devoted to the Hamiltonian formulation of the conformal decomposition of the gravitational field that was performed in [gr-qc/0501092]. We also analyze the gauge fixed form of the theory when we fix the conformal symmetry by imposing the condition det g=1.
We have proposed previously a method for constructing self-conjugate Hamiltonians H_eta in the eta-representation with a flat scalar product to describe the dynamics of Dirac particles in arbitrary gravitational fields. In this paper, we prove that, for block-diagonal metrics, the Hamiltonians H_eta can be obtained, in particular, using "reduced" parts of Dirac Hamiltonians, i.e. expressions for Dirac Hamiltonians derived using tetrad vectors in the Schwinger gauge without or with a few summands with bispinor connectivities. Based on these results, we propose a modified method for constructing…
It is shown that Einstein gravitational equations and canonical equations following from the Dirac-Schwinger Hamiltonian in the Faddeev variables coincide. For proving of this at first, the Einstein equations has been rewritten in canonical variables, and after this, the time derivative of the generalized momenta of the gravitational field in Faddeev form has been calculated using canonical Poisson brackets. The results coincide.
In the framework of the rest-frame instant form of tetrad gravity, where the Hamiltonian is the weak ADM energy ${\hat E}_{ADM}$, we define a special completely fixed 3-orthogonal Hamiltonian gauge, corresponding to a choice of {\it non-harmonic} 4-coordinates, in which the independent degrees of freedom of the gravitational field are described by two pairs of canonically conjugate Dirac observables (DO) $r_{\bar a}(τ,\vec σ)$, $π_{\bar a}(τ,\vec σ)$, $\bar a = 1,2$. We define a Hamiltonian linearization of the theory, i.e. gravitational waves, {\it without introducing any background 4-metric}…
A construction of the Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian for a pair of fermions, considered as a quantum two-body system, immersed in an arbitrary background gravitational field described by Einstein's General Relativity is presented. Working with Fermi normal coordinates for a freely falling observer in a spacetime region where there are no background sources and ignoring the gravitational back-reaction of the system, the effective Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian is obtained starting from the S-matrix element corresponding to the one-photon exchange between the charged fermionic currents. The contributions …
This chapter of the proceedings for the Ninth Meeting on CPT and Lorentz Symmetry is dedicated to the Hamiltonian formulation of the minimal gravitational Standard-Model Extension. Some theoretical questions associated with the latter shall be reviewed. First, we recall the properties of the Hamiltonian, which was computed elsewhere, and discuss how it is linked to the modified Einstein equations. Second, we describe how the covariant and Hamiltonian formulations are shown to be consistent with each other.
We provide a Hamiltonian derivation of recently discovered dual BMS charges. In order to do so, we work in the first order formalism and add to the usual Palatini action, the Holst term, which does not contribute to the equations of motion. We give a method for finding the leading order integrable dual charges à la Wald-Zoupas and construct the corresponding charge algebra. We argue that in the presence of fermions, the relevant term that leads to dual charges is the topological Nieh-Yan term.
Using a Hamiltonian formulation of the spherically symmetric gravity-scalar field theory adapted to flat spatial slicing, we give a construction of the reduced Hamiltonian operator. This Hamiltonian, together with the null expansion operators presented in an earlier work, form a framework for studying gravitational collapse in quantum gravity. We describe a setting for its numerical implementation, and discuss some conceptual issues associated with quantum dynamics in a partial gauge fixing.
Cosmological tensor perturbations equations are derived for Hamiltonian cosmology based on Ashtekar's formulation of general relativity, including typical quantum gravity effects in the Hamiltonian constraint as they are expected from loop quantum gravity. This translates to corrections of the dispersion relation for gravitational waves. The main application here is the preservation of causality which is shown to be realized due to the absence of anomalies in the effective constraint algebra used.
Proofs of two statements are provided in this paper. First, the authors prove that the formalism of the pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics allows describing the Dirac particles motion in arbitrary stationary gravitational fields. Second, it is proved that using the Parker weight operator and the subsequent transition to the η-representation gives the transformation of the Schroedinger equation for nonstationary metric, when the evolution operator becomes self-conjugate. The scalar products in the η-representation are flat, which makes possible the use of a standard apparatus for the Hermitian …
The model of cylindrical gravitational waves is employed to work out and check a recent proposal in Ref. [11] how a diffeomorphism-invariant Hamiltonian dynamics is to be constructed. The starting point is the action by Ashtekar and Pierri because it contains the boundary term that makes it differentiable for non-trivial variations at infinity. With the help of parametrization at infinity, the notion of gauge transformation is clearly separated from that of asymptotic symmetry. The symplectic geometry of asymptotic symmetries and asymptotic time is described and the role of the asymptotic stru…
We impose in the nonsymmetric gravitational theory, by means of Lagrange multiplier fields in the action, a set of covariant constraints on the antisymmetric tensor field. The canonical Hamiltonian constraints in the weak field approximation for the antisymmetric sector yield a Hamiltonian energy bounded from below. An analysis of the Cauchy evolution, in terms of an expansion of the antisymmetric sector about a symmetric Einstein background, shows that arbitrarily small antisymmetric Cauchy data can lead to smooth evolution.
The authors prove that the dynamics of spin 1/2 particles in stationary gravitational fields can be described using an approach, which builds upon the formalism of pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians. The proof consists in the analysis of three expressions for Hamiltonians, which are derived from the Dirac equation and describe the dynamics of spin 1/2 particles in the gravitational field of the Kerr solution. The Hamiltonians correspond to different choices of tetrad vectors and differ from each other. The differences between the Hamiltonians confirm the conclusion known from many studies that the …
It is shown by a straightforward argument that the Hamiltonian generating the time evolution of the Dirac wave function in relativistic quantum mechanics is not hermitian with respect to the covariantly defined inner product whenever the background metric is time dependent. An alternative, hermitian, Hamiltonian is found and is shown to be directly related to the canonical field Hamiltonian used in quantum field theory.
We develop the analysis of the asymptotic properties of gravity in higher spacetime dimensions $D$, with a particular emphasis on the case $D=5$. Our approach deals with spatial infinity and is Hamiltonian throughout. It is shown that the asymptotic symmetry algebra BMS$_5$, which is realized non linearly, contains a four-fold family of angle-dependent supertranslations. The structure of this non-linear algebra is investigated and a presentation in which the Poincaré subalgebra is linearly realized is constructed. Invariance of the energy is studied. Concluding comments on higher dimensions $D…
The surface Hamiltonian corresponding to the surface part of a gravitational action has $xp$ structure where $p$ is conjugate momentum of $x$. Moreover, it leads to $TS$ on the horizon of a black hole. Here $T$ and $S$ are temperature and entropy of the horizon. Imposing the hermiticity condition we quantize this Hamiltonian. This leads to an equidistant spectrum of its eigenvalues. Using this we show that the entropy of the horizon is quantized. This analysis holds for any order of Lanczos-Lovelock gravity. For general relativity, the area spectrum is consistent with Bekenstein's observation.…
We investigate the nonrelativistic limit of the gravitationally coupled Dirac Equation via a Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. The relativistic correction terms have immediate and obvious physical interpretations in terms of a gravitational zitterbewegung, and a gravitational spin-orbit coupling. We find no direct coupling of the spin vector to the gravitational force, which would otherwise violate parity. The particle-antiparticle symmetry described recently by one of us in [Phys.Rev.A 87 (2013) 032101] is verified on the level of the perturbative corrections accessed by the Foldy-Wouthuysen t…
We utilize generalized unitarity and recursion relations combined with effective field theory(EFT) techniques to compute spin dependent interaction terms for inspiralling binary systems in the post newtonian(PN) approximation. Using these methods offers great computational advantage over traditional techniques involving feynman diagrams, especially at higher orders in the PN expansion. As a specific example, we reproduce the spin-orbit interaction up to 2.5 PN order as also the leading order $S^2$(3PN) hamiltonian for an arbitrary massive object. We also obtain the unknown $S^3$(3.5PN) spin ha…
We consider the issue of attaining a consistent Hamiltonian formulation, after a 3+1 splitting, of a well defined action principle for asymptotically flat gravity. More precisely, our starting point is the gravitational first order Holst action with surface terms and fall-off conditions that make the variational principle and the covariant phase space formulation well defined for asymptotically flat spacetimes. Keeping all surface terms and paying due attention to subtleties that arise from the different cut-offs at infinity, we give a derivation of the gravitational Hamiltonian starting from …
The transformation properties of the gravitational energy-momentum in the teleparallel gravity are analyzed. It is proved that the gravitational energy-momentum in the teleparallel gravity can be expressed in terms of the Lorentz gauge potential, and therefore is not covariant under local Lorentz transformations. On the other hand, it can also be expressed in terms of the translation gauge field strength, and therefore is covariant under general coordinate transformations. A simplified Hamiltonian formulation of the teleparallel gravity is given. Its constraint algebra has the same structure a…
Goncalves et al. derived a non-relativistic limit of the generalised Dirac Hamiltonian in the presence of a gravitational wave, using the exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. This gave rise to the intriguing notion that spin-precession may occur even in the absence of a magnetic field. We argue that this effect is not physical as it is the result of a gauge-variant term that was an artefact of a flawed application of the exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. In this paper we derive the correct non-relativistic limit of the generalised Dirac Hamiltonian in the presence of a gravitational wav…
In the paper, for the Kerr field, we prove that Chandrasekhar's Dirac Hamiltonian and the self-adjoint Hamiltonian H_η with a flat scalar product of the wave functions are physically equivalent. Operators of transformation of Chandrasekhar's Hamiltonian and wave functions to the η-representation with a flat scalar product are defined explicitly. If the domain of the wave functions of Dirac's equation in the Kerr field is bounded by two-dimensional surfaces of revolution around the z axis, Chandrasekhar's Hamiltonian and the self-adjoint Hamiltonian in the η-representation are Hermitian with eq…
Based on recent developments by the authors a next-to-leading order spin(1)-spin(2) Hamiltonian is derived for the first time. The result is obtained within the canonical formalism of Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner (ADM) utilizing their generalized isotropic coordinates. A comparison with other methods is given.
This paper generalizes earlier work on Hamiltonian boundary terms by omitting the requirement that the spacelike hypersurfaces $Σ_t$ intersect the timelike boundary $\cal B$ orthogonally. The expressions for the action and Hamiltonian are calculated and the required subtraction of a background contribution is discussed. The new features of a Hamiltonian formulation with non-orthogonal boundaries are then illustrated in two examples.
Particles interacting with a prescribed quasimonochromatic gravitational wave (GW) exhibit secular (average) nonlinear dynamics that can be described by Hamilton's equations. We derive the Hamiltonian of this "ponderomotive" dynamics to the second order in the GW amplitude for a general background metric. For the special case of vacuum GWs, we show that our Hamiltonian is equivalent to that of a free particle in an effective metric, which we calculate explicitly. We also show that already a linear plane GW pulse displaces a particle from its unperturbed trajectory by a finite distance that is …
We show the appearance of geometric phase in a Dirac particle traversing in non-relativistic limit in a time-independent gravitational field. This turns out to be similar to the one originally described as a geometric phase in magnetic fields. We explore the geometric phase in the Kerr and Schwarzschild geometries, which have significant astrophysical implications. Nevertheless, the work can be extended to any spacetime background including that of time-dependent. In the Kerr background, i.e. around a rotating black hole, geometric phase reveals both the Aharonov-Bohm effect and Pancharatnam-B…
The static, i.e., linear momentum independent, part of the next-to-leading order (NLO) gravitational spin(1)-spin(1) interaction Hamiltonian within the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation is calculated from a 3-dim. covariant ansatz for the Hamilton constraint. All coefficients in this ansatz can be uniquely fixed for black holes. The resulting Hamiltonian fits into the canonical formalism of Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner (ADM) and is given in their transverse-traceless (ADMTT) gauge. This completes the recent result for the momentum dependent part of the NLO spin(1)-spin(1) ADM Hamiltonian for bi…
Gauge invariant, Hamiltonian formulation of field dynamics within a compact region $Σ$ with boundary $\partial Σ$ is given for the gravitational field linearized over a Kottler metric. The boundary conditions which make the system autonomous are discussed and the corresponding Hamiltonian functional $\mathcal{H}_\text{Invariant}$ is calculated. It is shown that, under specific boundary conditions, the quasi-local Geroch--Hawking mass $\mathcal{H}_\text{Hawking}$ reduces to $\mathcal{H}_\text{Invariant}$ in the weak field approximation. This observation is a quasi-local version of the classical…
We present a method to calculate the nonrelativistic hamiltonian for the minimal Standard-Model Extension matter sector in a uniform gravitational field. The resulting hamiltonian coincides with earlier results in the corresponding limits but it also includes spin-dependent terms that were previously unknown. The phenomenology associated with this hamiltonian is briefly discussed.
We construct Hamiltonian dynamics of the generalized spherically symmetric gravitational model in extended phase space. We start from the Faddeev - Popov effective action with gauge-fixing and ghost terms, making use of gauge conditions in differential form. It enables us to introduce missing velocities into the Lagrangian and then construct a Hamiltonian function according a usual rule which is applied for systems without constraints. The main feature of Hamiltonian dynamics in extended phase space is that it can be proved to be completely equivalent to Lagrangian dynamics derived from the ef…
The Hamiltonian for a system of relativistic bodies interacting by their gravitational field is found in the post-Minkowskian approximation, including all terms linear in the gravitational constant. It is given in a surprisingly simple closed form as a function of canonical variables describing the bodies only. The field is eliminated by solving inhomogeneous wave equations, applying transverse-traceless projections, and using the Routh functional. By including all special relativistic effects our Hamiltonian extends the results described in classical textbooks of theoretical physics. As an ap…
Motivated by situations with temporal evolution and spatial symmetries both singled out, we develop a new 2+1+1 decomposition of spacetime, based on a nonorthogonal double foliation. Time evolution proceeds along the leaves of the spatial foliation. We identify the gravitational variables in the velocity phase-space as the 2-metric (induced on the intersection $Σ_{tχ}$ of the hypersurfaces of the foliations), the 2+1 components of the spatial shift vector, together with the extrinsic curvature, normal fundamental form and normal fundamental scalar of $Σ_{tχ}$, all constructed with the normal t…
The Hamiltonian for physical systems and dynamic geometry generates the evolution of a spatial region along a vector field. It includes a boundary term which not only determines the value of the Hamiltonian, but also, via the boundary term in the variation of the Hamiltonian, the boundary conditions. The value of the Hamiltonian comes from its boundary term; it gives the quasi-local quantities: energy-momentum and angular-momentum/center-of-mass. This boundary term depends not only on the dynamical variables but also on their reference values; these reference values determine the ground state-…
In order to detect high frequency gravitational waves, we need a new detection method. In this paper, we develop a formalism for a gravitational wave detector using magnons in a cavity. Using Fermi normal coordinates and taking the non-relativistic limit, we obtain a Hamiltonian for magnons in gravitational wave backgrounds. Given the Hamiltonian, we show how to use the magnons for detecting high frequency gravitational waves. Furthermore, as a demonstration of the magnon gravitational wave detector, we give upper limits on GHz gravitational waves by utilizing known results of magnon experimen…
The behavior of spin-1/2 particle in a weak static gravitational field is considered. The Dirac Hamiltonian is diagonalized by the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation providing also the simple form for the momentum and spin polarization operators. The operator equations of momentum and spin motion are derived for a first time. Their semiclassical limit is analyzed. The dipole spin-gravity coupling in the previously found (another) Hamiltonian does not lead to any observable effects. The general agreement between the quantum and classical analysis is established, contrary to several recent claims. …
Recently, we have suggested some semi-quantitative Hamiltonian for an electron in a hydrogen atom in a weak gravitational field, which takes into account quantum effects of electron motion in the atom. We have shown that this Hamiltonian predicts breakdown of the equivalence between passive electron gravitational mass and its energy. Moreover, as has been shown by us, the latter phenomenon can be experimentally observed as unusual emission of radiation from an ensemble of the atoms, provided that they are moved in the Earth's gravitational field with constant velocity by some spacecraft. In th…
A summary is given of some results and perspectives of the hamiltonian ADM approach to 2+1 dimensional gravity. After recalling the classical results for closed universes in absence of matter we go over the the case in which matter is present in the form of point spinless particles. Here the maximally slicing gauge proves most effective by relating 2+1 dimensional gravity to the Riemann- Hilbert problem. It is possible to solve the gravitational field in terms of the particle degrees of freedom thus reaching a reduced dynamics which involves only the particle positions and momenta. Such a dyna…
A Hamiltonian formulation is given for the gravitational dynamics of two spinning compact bodies to next-to-leading order ($G/c^4$ and $G^2/c^4$) in the spin-orbit interaction. We use a novel approach (valid to linear order in the spins), which starts from the second-post-Newtonian metric (in ADM coordinates) generated by two spinless bodies, and computes the next-to-leading order precession, in this metric, of suitably redefined ``constant-magnitude'' 3-dimensional spin vectors ${\bf S}_1$, ${\bf S}_2$. We prove the Poincaré invariance of our Hamiltonian by explicitly constructing ten phase-s…
We extend the systematic calculation of an approximately relativistic Hamiltonian for centre of mass and internal dynamics of an electromagnetically bound two-particle system by Sonnleitner and Barnett [1] to the case including a weak post-Newtonian gravitational background field, described by the Eddington--Robertson parametrised post-Newtonian metric. Starting from a proper relativistic description of the situation, this approach allows to systematically derive the coupling of the model system to gravity, instead of `guessing' it by means of classical notions of relativistic effects. We embe…
Our topic concerns a long standing puzzle: the energy of gravitating systems. More precisely we want to consider, for gravitating systems, how to best describe energy-momentum and angular momentum/center-of-mass momentum (CoMM). It is known that these quantities cannot be given by a local density. The modern understanding is that (i) they are quasi-local (associated with a closed 2-surface), (ii) they have no unique formula, (iii) they have no reference frame independent description. In the first part of this work we review some early history, much of it not so well known, on the subject of gr…
The Hamiltonian of the metric General Relativity derived in our earlier study (Gravitation, {\bf 17}, 314 - 323 (2011)) is analyzed by the methods of Matrix Quantum Mechanics. This Hamiltonian is a quadratic function of the momenta $π^{mn}$ conjugate to the spatial components $g_{mn}$ of the metric tensor $g_{αβ}$. The Hamiltonian is reduced to the new form which is more convenient to derive the Schrödinger equation for the free gravitational field. In turn, this Schrödinger equation is used to study possible motions of the free gravitational field(s). In particular, it is shown that harmonic …
Expression for the Witten-Nester 4-spinor 3-form of the Hamiltonian density of gravitational field in the asymptotically flat space-time in terms of the Sommers-Sen spinors, direct with a certain orthonormal three-frame connect, is obtained. A direct connection between the one and the ADM Hamiltonian density in the Sen-Witten frame is established on this basis.
We find the Hamiltonian expression in the York basis of canonical ADM tetrad gravity of the 4-Weyl tensor of the asymptotically Minkowskian space-time. Like for the 4-Riemann tensor we find a radar tensor (whose components are 4-scalars due to the use of radar 4-coordinates), which coincides with the 4-Weyl tensor on-shell on the solutions of Einstein's equations. Then, by using the Hamiltonian null tetrads, we find the Hamiltonian expression of the Weyl scalars of the Newman-Perose approach and of the four eigenvalues of the 4-Weyl tensor. After having introduced the Dirac observables of cano…
We investigate the spin-1/2 relativistic quantum dynamics in the curved space-time generated by a central massive charged object (black hole). This necessitates a study of the coupling of a Dirac particle to the Reissner-Nordstrom space-time geometry and the simultaneous covariant coupling to the central electrostatic field. The relativistic Dirac Hamiltonian for the Reissner-Nordstrom geometry is derived. A Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation reveals the presence of gravitational, and electro-gravitational spin-orbit coupling terms which generalize the Fokker precession terms found for the Dirac-…
Starting from an interpretation of the classical-quantum correspondence, we derive the Dirac equation by factorizing the algebraic relation satisfied by the classical Hamiltonian, before applying the correspondence. This derivation applies in the same form to a free particle, to one in an electromagnetic field, and to one subjected to geodesic motion in a static metric, and leads to the same, usual form of the Dirac equation--in special coordinates. To use the equation in the static-gravitational case, we need to rewrite it in more general coordinates. This can be done only if the usual, spino…

It is well known that Einstein's equations assume a simple polynomial form in the Hamiltonian framework based on a Yang-Mills phase space. We re-examine the gravitational dynamics in this framework and show that {\em time} evolution of the gravitational field can be re-expressed as (a gauge covariant generalization of) the Lie derivative along a novel shift vector field in {\em spatial} directions. Thus, the canonical transformation generated by the Hamiltonian constraint acquires a geometrical interpretation on the Yang-Mills phase space, similar to that generated by the diffeomorphism constr…
A technique for translating the classical scattering function of two gravitationally interacting bodies into a corresponding (effective one-body) Hamiltonian description has been recently introduced [Phys.\ Rev.\ D {\bf 94}, 104015 (2016)]. Using this technique, we derive, for the first time, to second-order in Newton's constant (i.e. one classical loop) the Hamiltonian of two point masses having an arbitrary (possibly relativistic) relative velocity. The resulting (second post-Minkowskian) Hamiltonian is found to have a tame high-energy structure which we relate both to gravitational self-for…
The barotropic ideal fluid with step and delta-function discontinuities coupled to Einstein's gravity is studied. The discontinuities represent star surfaces and thin shells; only non-intersecting discontinuity hypersurfaces are considered. No symmetry (like eg. the spherical symmetry) is assumed. The symplectic structure as well as the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian variational principles for the system are written down. The dynamics is described completely by the fluid variables and the metric on the fixed background manifold. The Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian are given in two forms: the vo…
The importance of the first-class constraint algebra of general relativity is not limited just by its self-contained description of the gauge nature of spacetime, but it also provides conditions to properly evolve the geometry by selecting a gauge only once throughout the whole evolution of a gravitational system. This must be a property of all background independent theories. In this paper we consider gravitational theories which arise from deformations of the fundamental canonical variables of general relativity where the proposed deformations are inspired by modifications of gravity. These …
