The static, i.e., linear momentum independent, part of the next-to-leading order (NLO) gravitational spin(1)-spin(1) interaction Hamiltonian within the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation is calculated from a 3-dim. covariant ansatz for the Hamilton constraint. All coefficients in this ansatz can be uniquely fixed for black holes. The resulting Hamiltonian fits into the canonical formalism of Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner (ADM) and is given in their transverse-traceless (ADMTT) gauge. This completes the recent result for the momentum dependent part of the NLO spin(1)-spin(1) ADM Hamiltonian for binary black holes (BBH). Thus, all PN NLO effects up to quadratic order in spin for BBH are now given in Hamiltonian form in the ADMTT gauge. The equations of motion resulting from this Hamiltonian are an important step toward more accurate calculations of templates for gravitational waves.
Within the post Newtonian framework the fully reduced Hamiltonian (i.e., with eliminated spin supplementary condition) for the next-to-leading order spin-squared dynamics of general compact binaries is presented. The Hamiltonian is applicable to the spin dynamics of all kinds of binaries with self-gravitating components like black holes and/or neutron stars taking into account spin-induced quadrupolar deformation effects in second post-Newtonian order perturbation theory of Einstein's field equations. The corresponding equations of motion for spin, position and momentum variables are given in …
A quasi-Keplerian parameterisation for the solutions of second post-Newtonian (PN) accurate equations of motion for spinning compact binaries is obtained including leading order spin-spin and next-to-leading order spin-orbit interactions. Rotational deformation of the compact objects is incorporated. For arbitrary mass ratios the spin orientations are taken to be parallel or anti-parallel to the orbital angular momentum vector. The emitted gravitational wave forms are given in analytic form up to 2PN point particle, 1.5PN spin orbit and 1PN spin-spin contributions, where the spins are counted …
It is argued that the tetrad in a recent paper by Porto and Rothstein on gravitational spin-spin coupling should not have the given form. The fixation of that tetrad was suggested by Steinhoff, Hergt, and Schaefer as a possible source for the disagreement found in the spin-squared dynamics. However, this inconsistency will only show up in the next-to-leading order spin-orbit dynamics and not in the spin-squared dynamics. Instead, the disagreement found at the next-to-leading order spin-squared level is due to a sign typo in the spin-squared paper by Porto and Rothstein.
The next-to-next-to-leading order spin-squared interaction potential for generic compact binaries is derived for the first time via the effective field theory for gravitating spinning objects in the post-Newtonian scheme. The spin-squared sector is an intricate one, as it requires the consideration of the point particle action beyond minimal coupling, and mainly involves the spin-squared worldline couplings, which are quite complex, compared to the worldline couplings from the minimal coupling part of the action. This sector also involves the linear in spin couplings, as we go up in the nonlin…
We derive the post-Newtonian next-to-leading order conservative spin-orbit and spin(a)-spin(b) gravitational interaction Hamiltonians for arbitrary many compact objects. The spin-orbit Hamiltonian completes the knowledge of Hamiltonians up to and including 2.5PN for the general relativistic three-body problem. The new Hamiltonians include highly nontrivial three-body interactions, in contrast to the leading order consisting of two-body interactions only. This may be important for the study of effects like Kozai resonances in mergers of black holes with binary black holes.
We present the next-to-next-to-leading order post-Newtonian (PN) spin(1)-spin(2) Hamiltonian for two self-gravitating spinning compact objects. If both objects are rapidly rotating, then the corresponding interaction is comparable in strength to a 4PN effect. The Hamiltonian is checked via the global Poincare algebra with the center-of-mass vector uniquely determined by an ansatz.
We present the next-to-next-to-leading order post-Newtonian (PN) spin-orbit Hamiltonian for two self-gravitating spinning compact objects. If at least one of the objects is rapidly rotating, then the corresponding interaction is comparable in strength to a 3.5PN effect. The result in the present paper in fact completes the knowledge of the post-Newtonian Hamiltonian for binary spinning black holes up to and including 3.5PN. The Hamiltonian is checked via known results for the test-spin case and via the global Poincare algebra with the center-of-mass vector uniquely determined by an ansatz.
Building on the recently computed next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) post-Newtonian (PN) spin-orbit Hamiltonian for spinning binaries \cite{Hartung:2011te} we extend the effective-one-body (EOB) description of the dynamics of two spinning black-holes to NNLO in the spin-orbit interaction. The calculation that is presented extends to NNLO the next-to-leading order (NLO) spin-orbit Hamiltonian computed in Ref. \cite{Damour:2008qf}. The present EOB Hamiltonian reproduces the spin-orbit coupling through NNLO in the test-particle limit case. In addition, in the case of spins parallel or antiparal…
In previous works, we obtained the leading, next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading (NNL) post-Newtonian (PN) corrections in the conservative tidal interactions between two compact non-spinning objects using a Lagrangian of effective field theory (EFT) in harmonic coordinates. In the present paper, we compute the corresponding NNL PN tidal effective Hamiltonian in ADM-like and isotropic coordinates, with contributions from mass quadrupole, current quadrupole and mass octupole tidal interactions, consistently included at that level. We also derive the NNL tidal Hamiltonian in Delaunay varia…
We analyze gravitational theories with quadratic curvature terms, including the case of conformally invariant Weyl gravity, motivated by the intention to find a renormalizable theory of gravity in the ultraviolet region, yet yielding general relativity at long distances. In the Hamiltonian formulation of Weyl gravity, the number of local constraints is equal to the number of unstable directions in phase space, which in principle could be sufficient for eliminating the unstable degrees of freedom in the full nonlinear theory. All the other theories of quadratic type are unstable -- a problem ap…
The next-to-next-to-leading order post-Newtonian spin-orbit and spin(1)-spin(2) Hamiltonians for binary compact objects in general relativity are derived. The Arnowitt-Deser-Misner canonical formalism and its generalization to spinning compact objects in general relativity are presented and a fully reduced matter-only Hamiltonian is obtained. Several simplifications using integrations by parts are discussed. Approximate solutions to the constraints and evolution equations of motion are provided. Technical details of the integration procedures are given including an analysis of the short-range …
The canonical Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) Hamiltonian with next-to-leading order spin-spin coupling [J. Steinhoff, S. Hergt, and G. Schäfer] is converted into the EOB formalism of T. Damour, P. Jaranowski, and G. Schäfer for the special case of spinning black hole binaries whose spins are aligned with the angular momentum. In particular, we propose to include the new terms by adding a dynamical term of next-to-leading order to the Kerr parameter squared entering the effective metric. The modified EOB Hamiltonian consistently reduces to the Kerr Hamiltonian as the mass ratio tends to zero; more…
We propose a way of including the next-to-leading (NLO) order spin-spin coupling into an effective-one-body (EOB) Hamiltonian. This work extends [S. Balmelli and P. Jetzer, Phys. Rev. D 87, 124036 (2013)], which is restricted to the case of equatorial orbits and aligned spins, to general orbits with arbitrary spin orientations. This is done applying appropriate canonical phase-space transformations to the NLO spin-spin Hamiltonian in Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) coordinates, and systematically adding "effectiv" quantities at NLO to all spin-squared terms appearing in the EOB Hamiltonian. As req…
The next-to-next-to-leading order spin1-spin2 potential for an inspiralling binary, that is essential for accuracy to fourth post-Newtonian order, if both components in the binary are spinning rapidly, has been recently derived independently via the ADM Hamiltonian and the Effective Field Theory approaches, using different gauges and variables. Here we show the complete physical equivalence of the two results, thereby we first prove the equivalence of the ADM Hamiltonian and the Effective Field Theory approaches at next-to-next-to-leading order with the inclusion of spins. The main difficulty …
We present a new effective-one-body (EOB) Hamiltonian with next-to-leading order (NLO) spin-spin coupling for black hole binaries endowed with arbitrarily oriented spins. The Hamiltonian is based on the model for parallel spins and equatorial orbits developed in [Physical Review D 90, 044018 (2014)], but differs from it in several ways. In particular, the NLO spin-spin coupling is not incorporated by a redefinition of the centrifugal radius $r_c$, but by separately modifying certain sectors of the Hamiltonian, which are identified according to their dependence on the momentum vector. The gauge…
In the effective-one-body (EOB) approach the dynamics of two compact objects of masses m1 and m2 and spins S1 and S2 is mapped into the dynamics of one test particle of mass mu = m1 m2/(m1+m2) and spin S* moving in a deformed Kerr metric with mass M = m1+m2 and spin Skerr. In a previous paper we computed an EOB Hamiltonian for spinning black-hole binaries that (i) when expanded in post-Newtonian orders, reproduces the leading order spin-spin coupling and the leading and next-to-leading order spin-orbit couplings for any mass ratio, and (iii) reproduces all spin-orbit couplings in the test-part…
Post-Newtonian secular dynamics of hierarchical triples II. Canonical derivation of the 1PN $\times$ quadrupole cross terms and of the quadrupole-squared term
In this work we complete the spin-dependent conservative dynamics of inspiralling compact binaries at the fourth post-Newtonian order, and in particular the derivation of the next-to-next-to-leading order spin-squared interaction potential. We derive the physical equations of motion of the position and the spin from a direct variation of the action. Further, we derive the quadratic-in-spin Hamiltonians, as well as their expressions in the center-of-mass frame. We construct the conserved integrals of motion, which form the Poincaré algebra. This construction provided a consistency check for the…
Based on a recent paper by Rothe and Schäfer on compact binary systems, explicit expressions for canonical center and relative coordinates in terms of standard canonical coordinates are derived for spinless objects up to second post-Newtonian approximation of Einstein's theory of gravity. The inverse relations, i.e. the dependence of the standard canonical coordinates on the canonical center and relative coordinates, are also given up to the second post-Newtonian approximation. The famous Pythagorean-theorem-type Lorentz-invariant relation between the system's total energy or Hamiltonian squar…
We derive the predictions of quantum gravity with fakeons on the amplitudes and spectral indices of the scalar and tensor fluctuations in inflationary cosmology. The action is $R+R^{2}$ plus the Weyl-squared term. The ghost is eliminated by turning it into a fakeon, that is to say a purely virtual particle. We work to the next-to-leading order of the expansion around the de Sitter background. The consistency of the approach puts a lower bound ($ m_{χ}>m_{ϕ}/4$) on the mass $m_{χ}$ of the fakeon with respect to the mass $m_{ϕ}$ of the inflaton. The tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ is predicted within…
In this article the quasi-Keplerian parameterisation for the case that spins and orbital angular momentum in a compact binary system are aligned or anti-aligned with the orbital angular momentum vector is extended to 3PN point-mass, next-to-next-to-leading order spin-orbit, next-to-next-to-leading order spin(1)-spin(2), and next-to-leading order spin-squared dynamics in the conservative regime. In a further step, we use the expressions for the radiative multipole moments with spin to leading order linear and quadratic in both spins to compute radiation losses of the orbital binding energy and …
We implement the effective field theory for gravitating spinning objects in the post-Newtonian scheme at the next-to-next-to-leading order level to derive the gravitational spin-orbit interaction potential at the third and a half post-Newtonian order for rapidly rotating compact objects. From the next-to-next-to-leading order interaction potential, which we obtain here in a Lagrangian form for the first time, we derive straightforwardly the corresponding Hamiltonian. The spin-orbit sector constitutes the most elaborate spin dependent sector at each order, and accordingly we encounter a prolife…
We use the recently proposed Kaluza-Klein (KK) reduction over the time dimension, within an effective field theory (EFT) approach, to calculate the next to leading order (NLO) gravitational spin1-spin2 interaction between two spinning compact objects. It is shown here that to NLO in the spin1-spin2 interaction, the reduced KK action within the stationary approximation is sufficient to describe the gravitational interaction, and that it simplifies calculation substantially. We also find here that the gravito-magnetic vector field defined within the KK decomposition of the metric mostly dominate…
We take into account the dynamics of a complete third post-Newtonian conservative Hamiltonian of two spinning black holes, where the orbital part arrives at the third post-Newtonian precision level and the spin-spin part with the spin-orbit part includes the leading-order and next-to-leading-order contributions. It is shown through numerical simulations that the next-to-leading order spin-spin couplings play an important role in chaos. A dynamical sensitivity to the variation of single parameter is also investigated. In particular, there are a number of \textit{observable} orbits whose initial…
In general relativity, systems of spinning classical particles are implemented into the canonical formalism of Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner [1]. The implementation is made with the aid of a symmetric stress-energy tensor and not a 4-dimensional covariant action functional. The formalism is valid to terms linear in the single spin variables and up to and including the next-to-leading order approximation in the gravitational spin-interaction part. The field-source terms for the spinning particles occurring in the Hamiltonian are obtained from their expressions in Minkowski space with canonical va…
We use an effective field theory (EFT) approach to calculate the next to leading order (NLO) gravitational spin-orbit interaction between two spinning compact objects. The NLO spin-orbit interaction provides the most computationally complex sector of the NLO spin effects, previously derived within the EFT approach. In particular, it requires the inclusion of non-stationary cubic self-gravitational interaction, as well as the implementation of a spin supplementary condition (SSC) at higher orders. The EFT calculation is carried out in terms of the non-relativistic gravitational field parametriz…
