We construct Hamiltonian dynamics of the generalized spherically symmetric gravitational model in extended phase space. We start from the Faddeev - Popov effective action with gauge-fixing and ghost terms, making use of gauge conditions in differential form. It enables us to introduce missing velocities into the Lagrangian and then construct a Hamiltonian function according a usual rule which is applied for systems without constraints. The main feature of Hamiltonian dynamics in extended phase space is that it can be proved to be completely equivalent to Lagrangian dynamics derived from the effective action. We find a BRST invariant form of the effective action by adding terms not affecting Lagrangian equations. After all, we construct the BRST charge according to the Noether theorem. Our algorithm differs from that by Batalin, Fradkin and Vilkovisky, but the resulting BRST charge generates correct transformations for all gravitational degrees of freedom including gauge ones. Generalized spherically symmetric model imitates the full gravitational theory much better then models with finite number of degrees of freedom, so that one can expect appropriate results in the case of the full theory.
Hamiltonian dynamics in extended phase space for gravity and its consistency with Lagrangian formalism: a generalized spherically symmetric model as an example
In the Batalin - Fradkin - Vilkovisky approach to quantization of gauge theories a principal role is given to the BRST charge which can be constructed as a series in Grassmannian (ghost) variables with coefficients given by generalized structure functions of constraints algebra. Alternatively, the BRST charge can be derived making use of the Noether theorem and global BRST invariance of the effective action. In the case of Yang - Mills fields the both methods lead to the same expression for the BRST charge, but it is not valid in the case of General Relativity. It is illustrated by examples of…
We investigate the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism for gauge theories on spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes, with or without a cosmological constant ($Λ\geq0$). This is illustrated through the example of scalar electrodynamics. We first demonstrate that the horizons contribute additional surface terms to the Gauss law constraint of the theory when gauge transformations are not required to vanish on the horizons. We then consider the BRST invariant path integral including these surface terms following the Hamiltonian BRST formalism. We fix a radiation-like gauge which involv…
We work out the description of the gauge symmetry of unimodular gravity in the constrained Hamiltonian formalism. In particular, we demonstrate how the transversality conditions restricting the diffeomorphism parameters emerge from the algebra of the Hamiltonian constraints. The alternative form is long known as parametrizing the volume preserving diffeomorphisms by unrestricted two-forms instead of the transverse vector fields. This gauge symmetry is reducible. We work out the Hamiltonian description of this form of unimodular gravity (UG) gauge symmetry. Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin--Batalin-Fr…
BRST quantization is an elegant and powerful method to quantize theories with local symmetries. In this article we study the Hamiltonian BRST quantization of cosmological perturbations in a universe dominated by a scalar field, along with the closely related quantization method of Dirac. We describe how both formalisms apply to the perturbations in a time-dependent background, and how expectation values of gauge-invariant operators can be calculated in the in-in formalism. Our analysis focuses mostly on the free theory. By appropriate canonical transformations we simplify and diagonalize the f…
Anomaly freedom has been one of the most important issues in canonical quantization of gravity. In a physically meaningful (anomaly free) theory, the constraint operators must be first class, and their commutator algebra is expected to resemble the corresponding classical Poisson-bracket algebra. In this paper, we review the "constructive" approach to obtaining a consistent set of constraints: start with a Hamiltonian constraint and generate the corresponding diffeomorphism constraint as a commutator of two Hamiltonians. Closure of the constraint operator algebra then requires that the diffeom…

In this paper we derive the inverse spatial Laplacian for static, spherically symmetric backgrounds by solving Poisson's equation for a point source. This is different from the electrostatic Green function, which is defined on the four dimensional static spacetime, while the equation we consider is defined on the spatial hypersurface of such spacetimes. This Green function is relevant in the Hamiltonian dynamics of theories defined on spherically symmetric backgrounds, and closed form expressions for the solutions we find are absent in the literature. We derive an expression in terms of elemen…
We develop an effective framework for the $\barμ$ scheme of holonomy corrections motivated by loop quantum gravity for vacuum spherically symmetric space-times. This is done by imposing the areal gauge in the classical theory, and then expressing the remaining components of the Ashtekar-Barbero connection in the Hamiltonian constraint in terms of holonomies of physical length $\ell_{\rm Pl}$. The stationary solutions to the effective Hamiltonian constraint can be found exactly, and we give the explicit form of the effective metric in Painlevé-Gullstrand coordinates. This solution has the corre…
We present new second derivative, generally covariant theories of gravity for spherically symmetric spacetimes (general covariance is in the $t-r$ plane) belonging to the class where the spherically symmetric Einstein-Hilbert theory is modified by the presence of $g_{θθ}$ dependent functions. In $3+1$ dimensional vacuum spacetimes there is three-fold infinity of freedom in constructing such theories as revealed by the presence of three arbitrary $g_{θθ}$ dependent functions in the Hamiltonian (matter Hamiltonian also has the corresponding freedom). This result is not a contradiction to the the…
Action-angle coordinates are a tool commonly used in celestial mechanics to systematically parametrize and store general solutions of the equations of motion of astrophysical bodies. I perturbatively construct action-angle coordinates for bound test particle motion in static, spherically symmetric space-times using a post-circular expansion. Then I specialise the expressions to the motion in the gravitational fields of Schwarzschild black holes and give explicit formulas for the Hamiltonian to the 10th power in the radial action (20th power in eccentricity), and the transformation to angle coo…
Based on a recent purely geometric construction of observables for the spatial diffeomorphism constraint, we propose two distinct quantum reductions to spherical symmetry within full 3+1-dimensional loop quantum gravity. The construction of observables corresponds to using the radial gauge for the spatial metric and allows to identify rotations around a central observer as unitary transformations in the quantum theory. Group averaging over these rotations yields our first proposal for spherical symmetry. Hamiltonians of the full theory with angle-independent lapse preserve this spherically sym…
We investigate the Michel-type accretion onto a static spherically symmetric black hole. Using a Hamiltonian dynamical approach, we show that the standard method employed for tackling the accretion problem has masked some properties of the fluid flow. We determine new analytical solutions that are neither transonic nor supersonic as the fluid approaches the horizon(s); rather, they remain subsonic for all values of the radial coordinate. Moreover, the three velocity vanishes and the pressure diverges on the horizon(s), resulting in a flowout of the fluid under the effect of its own pressure. T…
In this paper we consider the Dvali and Gómez assumption that the end state of a gravitational collapse is a Bose-Einstein condensate of gravitons. We then construct the two Gross-Pitaevskii equations for a static and spherically symmetric configuration of the condensate. These two equations correspond to the constrained minimisation of the gravitational Hamiltonian with respect to the redshift and the Newtonian potential, per given number of gravitons. We find that the effective geometry of the condensate is the one of a gravastar (a DeSitter star) with a sub-Planckian cosmological constant, …
