We consider a vector bundle with integrable connection (\cE,\na) on an analytic domain U in the generic fiber \cX_η of a smooth formal p-adic scheme \cX, in the sense of Berkovich. We define the \emph{diameter} δ_{\cX}(ξ,U) of U at ξ\in U, the \emph{radius} ρ_{\cX}(ξ) of the point ξ\in\cX_η, the \emph{radius of convergence} of solutions of (\cE,\na) at ξ, R(ξ) = R_{\cX}(ξ, U,(\cE, \na)). We discuss (semi-) continuity of these functions with respect to the Berkovich topology. In particular, under we prove under certain assumptions that δ_{\cX}(ξ,U), ρ_{\cX}(ξ) and R_ξ(U,\cE,\na) are upper semicontinuous functions of ξ; for Laurent domains in the affine space, δ_{\cX}(-,U) is continuous. In the classical case of an affinoid domain U of the analytic affine line, R is a continuous function.
This paper reviews the equivalence between the category of taut adic spaces that are locally of finite type and the category of strictly analytic Berkovich spaces. An explicit construction of this functor is provided by using the terminology of valuative spaces.
We study the variation of the convergence Newton polygon of a differential equation along a smooth Berkovich curve over a non-archimedean complete valued field of characteristic 0. Relying on work of the second author who investigated its properties on affinoid domains of the affine line, we prove that its slopes give rise to continuous functions that factorize by the retraction through a locally finite subgraph of the curve.
We apply the theory of the radius of convergence of a p-adic connection to the special case of the direct image of the constant connection via a finite morphism of compact p-adic curves, smooth in the sense of rigid geometry. In the case of an etale covering of curves with good reduction, we get a lower bound for that radius and obtain a new geometric proof of a variant of the p-adic Rolle theorem of Robert and Berkovich. We take this opportunity to clarify the relation between our notion of radius of convergencand the more intrinsic one used by Kedlaya
We prove that the radii of convergence of the solutions of a $p$-adic differential equation $\mathcal{F}$ over an affinoid domain $X$ of the Berkovich affine line are continuous functions on $X$ that factorize through the retraction of $X\toΓ$ of $X$ onto a finite graph $Γ\subseteq X$. We also prove their super-harmonicity properties. Roughly speaking, this finiteness result means that the behavior of the radii as functions on $X$ is controlled by a finite family of data.
We construct a non-sheafy uniform Banach algebra such that a rational localisation of the Berkovich spectrum does not preserve the uniformity. We also construct uniform affinoid rings in the sense of Roland Huber such that rational localisations of the adic spectra do not preserve the uniformity. One of them is an example of a non-sheafy uniform affinoid ring. We introduce the notion of local uniformity instead, and prove that the local uniformity implies the sheaf condition.
We show that if a differential equations $\mathscr{F}$ over a quasi-smooth Berkovich curve $X$ has a certain compatibility condition with respect to an automorphism $σ$ of $X$, and if the automorphism is sufficiently close to the identity, then $\mathscr{F}$ acquires a semi-linear action of $σ$ (i.e. lifting that on $X$). This generalizes the previous works of Yves André, Lucia Di Vizio, and the author about $p$-adic $q$-difference equations. We also obtain an application to Morita's $p$-adic Gamma function, and to related values of $p$-adic $L$-functions.
In this paper, we introduce an algorithm for computing p-adic integrals on bad reduction hyperelliptic curves. For bad reduction curves, there are two notions of p-adic integration: Berkovich-Coleman integrals which can be performed locally; and abelian integrals with desirable number-theoretic properties. By covering a bad reduction hyperelliptic curve by annuli and basic wide open sets, we reduce the computation of Berkovich-Coleman integrals to the known algorithms on good reduction hyperelliptic curves. These are due to Balakrishnan, Bradshaw, and Kedlaya, and to Balakrishnan and Besser fo…
We introduce the $p$-adic particle-in-a-box as a free particle with periodic boundary conditions in the $p$-adic spatial domain. We compute its energy spectrum, and show that the spectrum of the Archimedean particle-in-a-box can be recovered from the $p$-adic spectrum via an Euler product formula. This product formula arises from a flow equation in Berkovich space, which we interpret as a space of theories connected by a kind of renormalization group flow. We propose that Berkovich spaces can be used to relate $p$-adic and Archimedean quantities generally.
We investigate the local properties of Berkovich spaces over Z. Using Weierstrass theorems, we prove that the local rings of those spaces are noetherian, regular in the case of affine spaces and excellent. We also show that the structure sheaf is coherent. Our methods work over other base rings (valued fields, discrete valuation rings, rings of integers of number fields, etc.) and provide a unified treatment of complex and p-adic spaces.
We study the radius of convergence of a differential equation on a smooth Berkovich curve over a non-archimedean complete valued field of characteristic 0. Several properties of this function are known: F. Baldassarri proved that it is continuous and the authors showed that it factorizes by the retraction through a locally finite graph. Here, assuming that the curve has no boundary or that the differential equation is overconvergent, we provide a shorter proof of both results by using potential theory on Berkovich curves.
We illustrate the theory of the radius of convergence of a connection on a p-adic curve X, by deducing from it a simple proof of a variant of Alain Robert's p-adic Rolle theorem. We need to carefully compare our global notion of radius of convergence, depending on the choice of a semistable formal model of X, and the local intrinsic notion of radius of convergence at a point x of Berkovich type 2 or 3, of Kedlaya. (Both notions go back to Dwork, Robba, Christol,...). The coincidence of the two notions when x is a point of the skeleton of the chosen semistable formal model of X, is crucial in t…
We study the functor of Weil restriction in the category of Huber's adic spaces and in the category of Berkovich spaces. We prove criteria for the representability of these functors in the respective categories. As an application of adic Weil restrictions, we prove that adic Néron models behave well with respect to tamely ramified base change.
We obtain an algorithm computing explicitly the values of the non solvable spectral radii of convergence of the solutions of a differential module over a point of type 2, 3 or 4 of the Berkovich affine line.
Let R be a perfect F_p-algebra, equipped with the trivial norm. Let W(R) be the ring of p-typical Witt vectors over R, equipped with the p-adic norm. At the level of nonarchimedean analytic spaces (in the sense of Berkovich), we demonstrate a close analogy between W(R) and the polynomial ring R[T] equipped with the Gauss norm, in which the role of the structure morphism from R to R[T] is played by the Teichmuller map. For instance, we show that the analytic space associated to R is a strong deformation retract of the space associated to W(R). We also show that each fibre forms a tree under the…
This paper deals with connections on $p$-adic analytic curves, in the sense of Berkovich. The curves must be compact but the connections are allowed to have a finite number of meromorphic singularities on them. For any choice of a semistable formal model of the curve, we define an intrinsic notion of normalized radius of convergence as a function on the curve, with values in $(0,1]$. For a sufficiently refined choice of the semistable model, we prove continuity and logarithmic concavity of that function. We characterize \emph{Robba connections}, that is connections whose sheaf of solutions is …
In this article, we give a full description of the topology of the one dimensional affine analytic space $\mathbb{A}_R^1$ over a complete valuation ring $R$ (i.e. a valuation ring with "real valued valuation" which is complete under the induced metric), when its field of fractions $K$ is algebraically closed. In particular, we show that $\mathbb{A}_R^1$ is both connected and locally path connected. Furthermore, $\mathbb{A}_R^1$ is the completion of $K\times (1,\infty)$ under a canonical uniform structure. As an application, we describe the Berkovich spectrum $\mathfrak{M}(\mathbb{Z}_p[G])$ of …
We revisit Huber's theory of continuous valuations, which give rise to the adic spectra used in his theory of adic spaces. We instead consider valuations which have been reified, i.e., whose value groups have been forced to contain the real numbers. This yields reified adic spectra which provide a framework for an analogue of Huber's theory compatible with Berkovich's construction of nonarchimedean analytic spaces. As an example, we extend the theory of perfectoid spaces to this setting.
Let $S$ be a noetherian scheme and $f\colon X\to S$ be a smooth morphism of relative dimension 1. For a locally constant sheaf on the complement of a divisor in $X$ at over $S$, Deligne and Laumon proved that the universal local acyclicity is equivalent to the local constancy of Swan conductors. In this article, assuming the universal local acyclicity, we show an analogous result of the continuity of local epsilon factors. We also give a generalization of this result to a family of isolated singularities.
For a complete valuation field k and a topological space X, we prove the universality of the underlying topological space of the Berkovich spectrum of the Banach k-algebra Cbd(X,k) of bounded continuous k-valued functions on X. This result yields three applications: a partial solution to an analogue of Kaplansky conjecture for the automatic continuity problem over a local field, comparison of two ground field extensions of Cbd(X,k), and non-Archimedean Gel'fand theory.
We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions of Frobenius equations defined over the ring of overconvergent series. As an application, we prove Chiarellotto-Tsuzuki's conjecture on the rationality and right continuity of Dwork's logarithmic growth filtrations associated to ordinary linear $p$-adic differential equations with Frobenius structures.
This paper originated as an appendix to the paper "Topology and Geometry of the Berkovich Ramification Locus for Rational Functions, II" by Xander Faber arXiv:1104.0943v2 [math.NT]. It may however be read independently. We prove a variant of Alain Robert's p-adic Rolle theorem, via the theory of the radius of convergence of p-adic connections and the theory of semistable reduction of p-adic curves. We carefully compare the present author's notion [Inv. Math. 182 (2010)] of radius of convergence, of a connection on a p-adic curve X, normalized by the choice of a semistable model of X, with Kedl…
Let k be a non archimedean field. If X is a k-algebraic variety and U a locally closed semi-algebraic subset of X^{an} -- the Berkovich space associated to X -- we show that for l \neq char(\tilde{k}), the cohomology groups H^i_c (\bar{U}, Q_l) behave like H^i_c(\bar{X}, Q_l), where \bar{U} = U \otimes \hat{\bar{k}}. In particular, they are finite-dimensional vector spaces. This result has been used by E. Hrushovski and F. Loeser. Moreover, we prove analogous finiteness properties concerning rigid semi-analytic subsets of compact Berkovich spaces (resp. adic spaces associated to quasi-compact …
Consider a vector bundle with connection on a p-adic analytic curve in the sense of Berkovich. We collect some improvements and refinements of recent results on the structure of such connections, and on the convergence of local horizontal sections. This builds on work from the author's 2010 book and on subsequent improvements by Baldassarri and Poineau-Pulita.
Let F be a finite extension of Q_p. We show that every Schwartz function on F, with values in an algebraic closure of Q_p, is the uniform limit of a sequence of Schwartz functions, whose Fourier transforms tend uniformly to 0. The proof uses the notion of q-binomial coefficients and some classical identities between them.
We study the asymptotic distribution of CM points on the moduli space of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{C}_p$, as the discriminant of the underlying endomorphism ring varies. In contrast with the complex case, we show that there is no uniform distribution. In this paper we characterize all the sequences of discriminants for which the corresponding CM points converge towards the Gauss point of the Berkovich affine line. We also give an analogous characterization for Hecke orbits. In the companion paper we characterize all the remaining limit measures of CM points and Hecke orbits.
Building on foundations introduced in a previous paper, we give several p-adic analytic descriptions of the categories of etale Zp-local systems and etale Qp-local systems on an affinoid algebra over a finite extension of Qp (or more generally, over the fraction field of the Witt vectors of a perfect field of characteristic p). These include generalizations of Fontaine's theory of (phi, Gamma)-modules, the refinement of Fontaine's construction introduced by Cherbonnier and Colmez, and a recent description by Fargues and Fontaine in terms of semistable vector bundles on a certain scheme. Our de…
We investigate the action of the Weil group on the compactly supported l-adic cohomology groups of rigid spaces over local fields. We prove that every eigenvalue of the action is a Weil number when either a rigid space is smooth or the characteristic of the base field is equal to 0. Since a smooth rigid space is locally isomorphic to the Raynaud generic fiber of an algebraizable formal scheme, we can use the techniques of alterations and monodromy spectral sequences in the smooth case. In the general case, we use the continuity theorem of Huber, which requires the restriction on the characteri…
We describe a new approach to relative p-adic Hodge theory based on systematic use of Witt vector constructions and nonarchimedean analytic geometry in the style of both Berkovich and Huber. We give a thorough development of phi-modules over a relative Robba ring associated to a perfect Banach ring of characteristic p, including the relationship between these objects and etale Z_p-local systems and Q_p-local systems on the algebraic and analytic spaces associated to the base ring, and the relationship between etale cohomology and phi-cohomology. We also make a critical link to mixed characteri…
The L-function of symmetric powers of classical Kloosterman sums is a polynomial whose degree is now known, as well as the complex absolute values of the roots. In this paper, we provide estimates for the p-adic absolute values of these roots. Our method is indirect. We first develop a Dwork-type p-adic cohomology theory for the two-variable infinite symmetric power L-function associated to the Kloosterman family, and then study p-adic estimates of the eigenvalues of Frobenius. A continuity argument then provides the desired p-adic estimates.
In this paper we compute the spectrum, in the sense of Berkovich, of an ultrametric linear differential equation with constant coefficients, defined over an affinoid domain of the analytic affine line $A_k^{1,an}$. We show that it is a finite union of either closed disks or topological closures of open disks and that it satisfies a continuity property.
We define and study a $p$-adic analogue of the incomplete gamma function related to Morita's $p$-adic gamma function. We also discuss a combinatorial identity related to the Artin-Hasse series, which is a special case of the exponential principle in combinatorics. From this we deduce a curious $p$-adic property of $|\mathrm{Hom} (G,S_n)|$ for a topologically finitely generated group $G$, using a characterization of $p$-adic continuity for certain functions $f \colon \mathbb Z_{>0} \to \mathbb Q_p$ due to O'Desky-Richman. In the end, we give an exposition of some standard properties of the Arti…
In this research oriented manuscript, foundational aspects of rigid geometry are discussed, putting emphasis on birational side of formal schemes and topological feature of rigid spaces. Besides the rigid geometry itself, topics include the general theory of formal schemes and formal algebraic spaces, based on a theory of complete rings which are not necessarily Noetherian (cf. introduction). The manuscript is encyclopedic and almost self-contained, and contains plenty of new results. A discussion on relationship with J. Tate's rigid analytic geometry, V. Berkovich's analytic geometry and R. H…
We introduce a $p$-adic analogue of the incomplete gamma function. We also introduce quantities ($m$-values) associated to a function on natural numbers and prove a new characterization of $p$-adic continuity for functions with $p$-integral $m$-values. Combinatorial interpretations for the integral values of the incomplete gamma function and functions with $m$-values zero or one are obtained, which show that these functions count derangements in generalized symmetric groups and permutations with restricted cycle lengths.
Study of stochastic differential equations on the field of p-adic numbers was initiated by the second author and has been developed by the first author, who proved several results for the p-adic case, similar to the theory of ordinary stochastic integral with respect to Levy processes on the Euclidean spaces. In this article, we present an improved definition of a stochastic integral on the field and prove the joint (time and space) continuity of the local time for p-adic stable processes. Then we use the method of random time change to obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of a weak …
