These are expanded notes from a four lecture mini-course given by the author at the Spring School on Non-archimedean geometry and Eigenvarieties, held at the University of Heidelberg in March 2023. The course discusses coherent sheaves, various properties of morphisms, as well as the links to formal geometry and Berkovich spaces.
In this paper, we study the anabelian geometry of hyperbolic polycurves of dimension 2 over sub-p-adic fields. In 1-dimensional case, Mochizuki proved the Hom version of the Grothendieck conjecture for hyperbolic curves over sub-p-adic fields and the pro-p version of this conjecture. In 2-dimensional case, a naive analogue of this conjecture does not hold for hyperbolic polycurves over general sub-p-adic fields. Moreover, the Isom version of the pro-p Grothendieck conjecture does not hold in general. We explain these two phenomena and prove the Hom version of the Grothendieck conjecture for hy…
This paper reviews the equivalence between the category of taut adic spaces that are locally of finite type and the category of strictly analytic Berkovich spaces. An explicit construction of this functor is provided by using the terminology of valuative spaces.
We transfer several elementary geometric properties of rigid-analytic spaces to the world of adic spaces, more precisely to the category of adic spaces which are locally of (weakly) finite type over a non-archimedean field. This includes normality, irreducibility (in particular irreducible components) and a Stein factorization theorem. Most notably we show that finite morphisms of adic spaces are open under mild assumptions on the base and target space.
We develop a theory of log adic spaces by combining the theories of adic spaces and log schemes, and study the Kummer étale and pro-Kummer étale topology for such spaces. We also establish the primitive comparison theorem in this context, and deduce from it some related cohomological finiteness or vanishing results.
We compute the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of Drinfeld symmetric spaces of any dimension. This refines the computation of the rational $p$-adic étale cohomology from Colmez-Dospinescu-Nizioł. The main tools are: the computation of the integral de Rham cohomology from CDN and the integral $p$-adic comparison theorems of Bhatt-Morrow-Scholze and Česnavičius-Koshikawa which replace the quasi-integral comparison theorem of Tsuji used in CDN.

We compute the $p$-adic étale and the pro-étale cohomologies of the Drinfeld half-space of any dimension. The main input is a new comparison theorem for the $p$-adic pro-étale cohomology of $p$-adic Stein spaces.
We prove the weight-monodromy conjecture for varieties which are p-adically uniformized by a product of the Drinfeld upper half spaces. It is an easy consequence of Dat's work on the cohomology complex of the Drinfeld upper half space.
We consider more general framework than the corresponding one considered in our previous work on the Hodge-Iwasawa theory. In our current consideration we consider the corresponding more general base spaces, namely the analytic adic spaces and analytic perfectoid spaces in Kedlaya's AWS Lecture notes. We hope our discussion will also shed some light on further generalization to even more general spaces such as those considered by Gabber-Ramero namely one just considers certain topological rings which satisfy the Fontaine-Wintenberger idempotent correspondence and calls them perfectoid generali…
In this paper we show that certain Shimura varieties, uniformized by the product of complex unit balls, can be p-adically uniformized by the product (of equivariant coverings) of Drinfeld upper half-spaces. We also extend a p-adic uniformization to automorphic vector bundles. It is a continuation of our previous work [V], and contains all cases (up to a central modification) of a uniformization by known p-adic symmetric spaces. The idea of the proof is to show that an arithmetic quotient of the product of Drinfeld upper half-spaces cannot be anything else than a certain unitary Shimura variety…
We investigate the action of the Weil group on the compactly supported l-adic cohomology groups of rigid spaces over local fields. We prove that every eigenvalue of the action is a Weil number when either a rigid space is smooth or the characteristic of the base field is equal to 0. Since a smooth rigid space is locally isomorphic to the Raynaud generic fiber of an algebraizable formal scheme, we can use the techniques of alterations and monodromy spectral sequences in the smooth case. In the general case, we use the continuity theorem of Huber, which requires the restriction on the characteri…
We prove the Topological Mirror Symmetry Conjecture by Hausel-Thaddeus for smooth moduli spaces of Higgs bundles of type $\operatorname{SL}_n$ and $\operatorname{PGL}_n$. More precisely, we establish an equality of stringy Hodge numbers for certain pairs of algebraic orbifolds generically fibred into dual abelian varieties. Our proof utilises p-adic integration relative to the fibres, and interprets canonical gerbes present on these moduli spaces as characters on the Hitchin fibres using Tate duality. Furthermore we prove for $d$ coprime to $n$, that the number of rank $n$ Higgs bundles of deg…
We interpolate the Gauss-Manin connection in p-adic families of nearly overconvergent modular forms. This gives a family of Maass-Shimura type differential operators from the space of nearly overconvergent modular forms of type r to the space of nearly overconvergent modular forms of type r + 1 with p-adic weight shifted by 2. Our construction is purely geometric, using Andreatta-Iovita-Stevens and Pilloni's geometric construction of eigencurves, and should thus generalize to higher rank groups.
We develop some of the foundations of affinoid pre-adic spaces without Noetherian or finiteness hypotheses. We give some explicit examples of non-adic affinoid pre-adic spaces (including a locally perfectoid one). On the positive side, we also show that if every affinoid subspace of an affinoid pre-adic space is uniform, then the structure presheaf is a sheaf; note in particular that we assume no finiteness hypotheses on our rings here. One can use our result to give a new proof that the spectrum of a perfectoid algebra is an adic space.
We study the functor of Weil restriction in the category of Huber's adic spaces and in the category of Berkovich spaces. We prove criteria for the representability of these functors in the respective categories. As an application of adic Weil restrictions, we prove that adic Néron models behave well with respect to tamely ramified base change.
The main objects of study are adic spaces with logarithmic structures. After establishing the basic definitions, we analyze the Kummer étale and pro-Kummer étale topologies on log adic spaces. In particular, we show that log adic spaces are locally "log affinoid perfectoid" in the pro-Kummer étale topology. As an application, we prove finiteness of cohomologies for Kummer étale $\mathbb{F}_p$-local systems on proper log smooth adic spaces.
We discuss recent developments in $p$-adic geometry, ranging from foundational results such as the degeneration of the Hodge-to-de Rham spectral sequence for "compact $p$-adic manifolds" over new period maps on moduli spaces of abelian varieties to applications to the local and global Langlands conjectures, and the construction of "universal" $p$-adic cohomology theories. We finish with some speculations on how a theory that combines all primes $p$, including the archimedean prime, might look like.
We compute the expectation of the number of linear spaces on a random complete intersection in $p$-adic projective space. Here "random" means that the coefficients of the polynomials defining the complete intersections are sampled uniformly form the $p$-adic integers. We show that as the prime $p$ tends to infinity the expected number of linear spaces on a random complete intersection tends to $1$. In the case of the number of lines on a random cubic in three-space and on the intersection of two random quadrics in four-space, we give an explicit formula for this expectation.
In this paper, we study the l-adic cohomology of the Rapoport-Zink tower for GSp(4). We prove that the smooth representation of GSp_4(Q_p) obtained as the i-th compactly supported l-adic cohomology of the Rapoport-Zink tower has no quasi-cuspidal subquotient unless i=2,3,4. Our proof is purely local and does not require global automorphic methods.
This is a review of several results related to distribution of powers and combination of powers modulo 1. We include a proof that given a sequence of real numbers $θ_n$, it is possible to get an $α$ (given $λ\ne 0$), or a $λ$ (given $α> 1$) such that $λα^n$ is close to $θ_n$ modulo 1. We also prove that in a number field, if a combination of powers $λ_1 α_1^n + \cdots + λ_m α_m^n$ has bounded $v$-adic absolute value (where $v$ is any non-Archimedian place) for $n \geq n_0$, then the $α_i$'s are algebraic integers. Finally we present several open problem and topics for further research.
We give a general expression of spherical functions on $p$-adic homogeneous spaces of $G$, based on data of $G$ and functional equations of spherical functions. Then, we show a unified method to obtain functional equations of spherical functions and relate them those of $p$-adic local zeta functions of small prehomogeneous vector spaces.
It is shown that the $p$-adic Banach spaces introduced by Emerton are isomorphic to the cohomology groups of the sheaf of continuous $\Q_{p}$-valued functions on a certain space. Some applications of this result are discussed.
For a local non-Archimedean field $K$ we construct ${\rm GL}_{d+1}(K)$-equivariant coherent sheaves ${\mathcal V}_{{\mathcal O}_K}$ on the formal ${\mathcal O}_K$-scheme ${\mathfrak X}$ underlying the symmetric space $X$ over $K$ of dimension $d$. These ${\mathcal V}_{{\mathcal O}_K}$ are ${\mathcal O}_K$-lattices in (the sheaf version of) the holomorphic discrete series representations (in $K$-vector spaces) of ${\rm GL}_{d+1}(K)$ as defined by P. Schneider \cite{schn}. We prove that the cohomology $H^t({\mathfrak X},{\mathcal V}_{{\mathcal O}_K})$ vanishes for $t>0$, for ${\mathcal V}_{{\mat…
We introduce the notion of p-adic magic contraction on p-adic Hilbert space. We derive p-adic Halmos dilation, p-adic Egervary N-dilation, p-adic von Neumann inequality and p-adic Sz.-Nagy dilation for p-adic magic contraction.
The purpose of the current paper is to introduce some new methods for studying the $p$-adic Banach spaces introduced by Emerton \cite{emerton}. We first relate these spaces to more familiar sheaf cohomology groups. As an application, we obtain a more general version of Emerton's spectral sequence. We also calculate the spaces in some easy cases. As a consequence, we obtain a number of vanishing theorems.
We generalize the surjectivity result of the $p$-adic monodromy for the ordinary locus of a Siegel moduli space by Faltings and Chai (independently by Ekedahl) to that for any $p$-rank stratum. We discuss irreducibility and connectedness of some $p$-rank strata of the moduli spaces with parahoric level structure. Finer results are obtained on the Siegel 3-fold with Iwahori level structure.
We revisit Huber's theory of continuous valuations, which give rise to the adic spectra used in his theory of adic spaces. We instead consider valuations which have been reified, i.e., whose value groups have been forced to contain the real numbers. This yields reified adic spectra which provide a framework for an analogue of Huber's theory compatible with Berkovich's construction of nonarchimedean analytic spaces. As an example, we extend the theory of perfectoid spaces to this setting.
This article gives a new proof of the fundamental lemma of the "weakly admissible implies admissible" theorem of Colmez-Fontaine that describes the semi-stable p-adic representations. To this end, we introduce the category of spectral Banach spaces, which are p-adic Banach spaces with a C_p-algebra of analytic functions, and the subcategory of effective Banach-Colmez spaces. The fundamental lemma states the surjectivity of certain analytic maps and describes their kernel. It is proven by an explicit count of solutions of the equations defining these maps. It is equivalent to the existence of f…
This paper generalizes work of Buzzard and Kilford to the case $p=3$, giving an explicit bound for the overconvergence of the quotient $E_κ/ V(E_κ)$ and using this bound to prove that the eigencurve is a union of countably many annuli over the boundary of weight space.
The notion of relative cuspidality for distinguished representations attached to $p$-adic symmetric spaces is introduced. A characterization of relative cuspidality in terms of Jacquet modules is given and a generalization of Jacquet's subrepresentation theorem to the relative case (symmetric space case) is established.
Nondegenerate quadratic forms over $p$-adic fields are classified by their dimension, discriminant, and Hasse invariant. This paper uses these three invariants, elementary facts about $p$-adic fields and the theory of quadratic forms to determine which types of quadratic spaces -- including degenerate cases -- can be embedded in the Euclidean $p$-adic space $(\mathbb{Q}_{p}^{n},x_{1}^{2}+\cdots+x_{n}^{2})$, and the Lorentzian space $(\mathbb{Q}_{p}^{n},x_{1}^{2}+\cdots+x_{n-1}^{2}+λx_{n}^{2})$, where $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ is the field of $p$-adic numbers, and $λ$ is a nonsquare in the finite field …
A symmetric space analogue of Casselman's criterion for square integrability of representations of a p-adic group is established. It is described in terms of exponents of Jacquet modules along parabolic subgroups associated to the symmetric space.
We prove the continuous non-Archimedean (resp. p-adic) Banach space and Hilbert space versions of non-Archimedean (resp. p-adic) Welch bounds proved by M. Krishna. We formulate continuous non-Archimedean and p-adic functional Zauner conjectures.
For an operator-differential equation of the form $y^{(m)}(z) = Ay(z)$, where $A$ is a closed linear operator on a Banach space over the the field of $p$-adic numbers, the necessary and sufficient conditions on initial data for the Cauchy problem to be well-posed in the class of locally analytic vector-valued functions are given. The result is illustrated by $p$-adic partial differential equations.
We introduce the $p$-adic particle-in-a-box as a free particle with periodic boundary conditions in the $p$-adic spatial domain. We compute its energy spectrum, and show that the spectrum of the Archimedean particle-in-a-box can be recovered from the $p$-adic spectrum via an Euler product formula. This product formula arises from a flow equation in Berkovich space, which we interpret as a space of theories connected by a kind of renormalization group flow. We propose that Berkovich spaces can be used to relate $p$-adic and Archimedean quantities generally.
For the Cauchy problem for an operator differential equation of the form $y'(z) = Ay(z)$, where $A$ is a closed linear operator on a Banach space over the completion of an algebraic closure of the field of $p$-adic numbers, a criterion of correct solvability in the class of locally analytic vector-functions is established. It is shown how the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem for $p$-adic partial differential equations may be obtained as a particular case from this criterion.
We introduce an automorphism $\mathcal{S}$ of the space $C(\mathbb{Z}_p,\mathbb{C}_p)$ of continuous functions $\mathbb{Z}_p \rightarrow \mathbb{C}_p$ and show that it can be used to give an alternative construction of the $p$-adic incomplete $Γ$-functions recently introduced by O'Desky and Richman (arXiv:2012.04615). We then describe various properties of the automorphism $\mathcal{S}$, showing that it is self-adjoint with respect to a certain non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form defined in terms of $p$-adic integration, and showing that its inverse plays a role in a $p$-adic integral-trans…
We investigate the space $X$ of unitary hermitian matrices over $\frp$-adic fields through spherical functions. First we consider Cartan decomposition of $X$, and give precise representatives for fields with odd residual characteristic, i.e., $2\notin \frp$. In the latter half we assume odd residual characteristic, and give explicit formulas of typical spherical functions on $X$, where Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials of type $C_n$ appear as a main term, parametrization of all the spherical functions. By spherical Fourier transform, we show the Schwartz space $\SKX$ is a free Hecke algebr…
We study in detail certain natural continuous representations of G = GL(n,K) in locally convex vector spaces over a locally compact, non-archimedean field K of characteristic zero. We construct boundary value maps, or integral transforms, between subquotients of the dual of a ``holomorphic'' representation coming from a p-adic symmetric space, and ``principal series'' representations constructed from locally analytic functions on G. We characterize the image of each of our integral transforms as a space of functions on $G$ having certain transformation properties and satisfying a system of par…
For p=2 and tame level N=1 we prove that the map from the (Coleman-Mazur) Eigencurve to weight space satisfies the valuative criterion of properness. More informally, we show that the Eigencurve has no "holes"; given a punctured disc of finite slope overconvergent eigenforms over weight space, the center can be "filled in" with a finite slope overconvergent eigenform.
We prove that the irreducible components of the space of framed deformations of the trivial 2-dimensional mod 2 representation of the absolute Galois group of Q_2 are in natural bijection with those of the trivial character, confirming a conjecture of Böckle. We deduce from this result that crystalline points are Zariski dense in that space: this provides the missing ingredient for the surjectivity of the p-adic local Langlands correspondence for GL_2(Q_p) in the case p=2 (the result was already known for p\geq 3).
In this article we will show how to compute $U_p$ acting on spaces of overconvergent $p$-adic modular forms when $X_0(p)$ has genus 1. We first give a construction of Banach bases for spaces of overconvergent $p$-adic modular forms, and then give an algorithm to approximate both the characteristic power series of the $U_p$ operator and eigenvectors of finite slope for $U_p$, and present some explicit examples. We will also relate this to the conjectures of Clay on the slopes of overconvergent modular forms.
