We describe the integral cohomology rings of the flag manifolds of types B_n, D_n, G_2 and F_4 in terms of their Schubert classes. The main tool is the divided difference operators of Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand and Demazure. As an application, we compute the Chow rings of the corresponding complex algebraic groups, recovering thereby the results of R. Marlin.
Let G be a compact connected Lie group with a maximal torus T\subsetG. In the context of Schubert calculus we obtain a canonical presentation for the integral cohomology ring H^{\ast}(G/T) of the complete flag manifold G/T. The result have been applied in [15] to construct the integral cohomology ring H^{\ast}(G) in terms of Schubert classes on G/T, and in [16] to determine the structure of the modp cohomology H^{\ast}(G;F_{p}) as a Hopf algebra over the Steenrod algebra.
We give an algorithm to compute the integer cohomology groups of any real partial flag manifold, by computing the incidence coefficients of the Schubert cells. For even flag manifolds we determine the integer cohomology groups, by proving that any torsion class has order 2 (generalizing a result of Ehresmann). We conjecture this to hold for any real flag manifold. We obtain results concerning which Schubert varieties represent integer cohomology classes, their structure constants and how to express them in terms of characteristic classes. For even flag manifolds and Grassmannians we also descr…
Let $G$ be a compact and $1$--connected Lie group with a maximal torus $T$. Based on Schubert calculus on the flag manifold $G/T$ [15] we construct the integral cohomology ring $H^{\ast}(G)$ uniformly for all $G$.
Hilbert's 15th problem called for a rigorous foundation of Schubert's calculus, in which a long standing and challenging part is Schubert's problem of characteristics. In the course of securing the foundation of algebraic geometry, Van der Waerden and André Weil attributed the problem to the determination of the intersection theory of flag manifolds. This article surveys the background, content, and resolution of the problem of characteristics. Our main results are a unified formula for the characteristics, and a system description for the intersection rings of flag manifolds. We illustrate th…
In this paper we study a relation between the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety and Schubert polynomials. To describe an explicit presentation of the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety, polynomials $f_{i,j}$ were introduced by Abe-Harada-Horiguchi-Masuda. We show that every polynomial $f_{i,j}$ is an alternating sum of certain Schubert polynomials.
We describe the torus-equivariant cohomology of weighted partial flag orbifolds ${\mathrm{w}}Σ$ of type $A$. We establish counterparts of several results known for the partial flag variety that collectively constitute what we refer to as ``Schubert Calculus on ${\mathrm{w}}Σ$''. For the weighed Schubert classes in ${\mathrm{w}}Σ$, we give the Chevalley's formula. In addition, we define the weighted analogue of double Schubert polynomials and give the corresponding Chevalley--Monk's formula.
We prove that the prime torsion in the local integral intersection cohomology of Schubert varieties in the flag variety of the general linear group grows exponentially in the rank. The idea of the proof is to find a highly singular point in a Schubert variety and calculate the Euler class of the normal bundle to the (miraculously smooth) fibre in a particular Bott-Samelson resolution. The result is a geometric version of an earlier result established using Soergel bimodule techniques.
The Schubert varieties on a flag manifold G/P give rise to a cell decomposition on G/P whose Kronecker duals, known as the Schubert classes on G/P, form an additive base of the integral cohomology of G/P. The Schubert's problem of characteristics asks to express a monomial in the Schubert classes as a linear combination in the Schubert basis. We present a unified formula expressing the characteristics of a flag manifold G/P as polynomials in the Cartan numbers of the group G. As application we develop a direct approach to our recent works on the Schubert presentation of the cohomology rings of…
In this paper, we prove a generalization of Kempf-Laksov formula for the degeneracy loci classes in even infinitesimal cohomology theories of the Grassmannian bundle and the Lagrangian Grassmannian bundle.
In this paper, we study the T_w-equivariant cohomology of the weighted Grassmannians wGr(d,n) introduced by Corti-Reid where T_w is the n-dimensional torus that naturally acts on wGr(d,n). We introduce the equivariant weighted Schubert classes and, after we show that they form a basis of the equivariant cohomology, we give an explicit formula for the structure constants with respect to this Schubert basis. We also find a linearly independent subset {wu_1,...,wu_n} of Lie(T_w)^* such that those structure constants are polynomials in wu_i's with non-negative coefficients, up to a permutation on …
We show a Z^2-filtered algebraic structure and a "quantum to classical" principle on the torus-equivariant quantum cohomology of a complete flag variety of general Lie type, generalizing earlier works of Leung and the second author. We also provide various applications on equivariant quantum Schubert calculus, including an equivariant quantum Pieri rule for any partial flag variety of Lie type A.
In this article, the comodule structure of Chow rings of Flag manifolds $\operatorname{CH}(G/B)$ is described by Schubert cells. Its equivariant version gives rise to a Hopf structure of the equivariant cohomology of flag manifolds $H^*_B(G/B)$. We get two identities of generalized Schubert polynomials as explanations of the geometric facts.
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be one of the ind-groups $GL(\infty)$, $O(\infty)$, $Sp(\infty)$ and $\mathbf{P}\subset \mathbf{G}$ be a splitting parabolic ind-subgroup. The ind-variety $\mathbf{G}/\mathbf{P}$ has been identified with an ind-variety of generalized flags in the paper "Ind-varieties of generalized flags as homogeneous spaces for classical ind-groups" (Int. Math. Res. Not. 2004, no. 55, 2935--2953) by I. Dimitrov and I. Penkov. In the present paper we define a Schubert cell on $\mathbf{G}/\mathbf{P}$ as a $\mathbf{B}$-orbit on $\mathbf{G}/\mathbf{P}$, where $\mathbf{B}$ is any Borel ind-subgro…
Let $G$ be a compact Lie group with a maximal torus $T$. Based on a presentation of the integral cohomology ring $H^{\ast}(G/T)$ of the flag manifold $G/T$ in \cite{DZ1}we have presented in \cite{DZ2}an explicit and unified construction of the integral cohomology rings $H^{\ast}(G)$ for the $1$--connected Lie groups $G$. In this paper we extend this construction to all compact Lie groups.
Divided difference operators are degree-reducing operators on the cohomology of flag varieties that are used to compute algebraic invariants of the ring (for instance, structure constants). We identify divided difference operators on the equivariant cohomology of G/P for arbitrary partial flag varieties of arbitrary Lie type, and show how to use them in the ordinary cohomology of G/P. We provide three applications. The first shows that all Schubert classes of partial flag varieties can be generated from a sequence of divided difference operators on the highest-degree Schubert class. The second…
The main result of this note is a Giambelli formula for the Peterson Schubert classes in the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of a type $A$ Peterson variety. Our results depend on the Monk formula for the equivariant structure constants for the Peterson Schubert classes derived by Harada and Tymoczko. In addition, we give proofs of two facts observed by H. Naruse: firstly, that some constants which appear in the multiplicative structure of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of Peterson varieties are Stirling numbers of the second kind, and secondly, that the Peterson Schubert classes satisfy a …
In this paper, we present a closed formula for the cohomology of real Grassmannians. To achieve this, we use a theory of stratified spaces to compute the differentials in a chain complex that computes the cohomology. Specifically, we organize Schubert cells as a conically smooth stratified space in the sense of Ayala, Francis, Tanaka; the links therein yield the sought differentials, using methods in differential topology. Further, we identify the isomorphism type of this chain complex and we use this result to provide a closed formula for the additive structure of the cohomology of real Grass…
Peterson varieties are a special class of Hessenberg varieties that have been extensively studied e.g. by Peterson, Kostant, and Rietsch, in connection with the quantum cohomology of the flag variety. In this manuscript, we develop a generalized Schubert calculus, and in particular a positive Chevalley-Monk formula, for the ordinary and Borel-equivariant cohomology of the Peterson variety $Y$ in type $A_{n-1}$, with respect to a natural $S^1$-action arising from the standard action of the maximal torus on flag varieties. As far as we know, this is the first example of positive Schubert calculu…
Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group and $T$ be its maximal torus. The homogeneous space $G/T$ is called the (complete) flag manifold. One of the main goals of the {\em equivariant Schubert calculus} is to study the $T$-equivariant cohomology $H^*_T(G/T)$ with regard to the $T$-action on $G/T$ by multiplication. There are three presentations known for $H^*_T(G/T)$; (1) the free $H^*(BT)$-module generated by the Schubert varieties (2) (with the rational coefficients) the {\em double coinvariant ring} of the Weyl group (3) the {\em GKM ring} associated to the Hasse graph of the Weyl group. E…
In this paper, we first discuss the topological properties of projective Stiefel manifolds, we compute their cohomology rings and classify their cohomology endomorphisms; Then by embedding the flag manifold of a classical Lie group into its corresponding infinite dimensional projective Stiefel manifold(which is homotopic to the product of infinite dimensional complex projective space $\mathbb{C}P^{\infty}$), we define the Schubert polynomials and dual Schubert polynomials. Finally we discuss the property and the computation of these polynomials.
