Let E/F be a quadratic number (resp. p-adic) field extension, and F' an odd degree cyclic field extension of F. We establish a base-change functorial lifting of automorphic (resp. admissible) representations from the unitary group U(3,E/F) associated with E/F to the unitary group U(3,F'E/F'). As a consequence, we classify the invariant packets of U(3,F'E/F'), namely those which contain (irreducible) automorphic (resp. admissible) representations which are invariant under the action of the Galois group Gal(F'E/E). To do this we use the trace formula technique, and well-known results on the base-change lifting from U(3,E/F) to GL(3,E) and on the base-change lifting for the general linear groups. We also determine the invariance of individual representations, using Howe correspondence. This work is the first study of base change into an algebraic group whose packets are not all singletons, and which does not satisfy the "strong multiplicity one theorem." Novel phenomena are encountered: e.g. there are invariant packets where not every irreducible automorphic (resp. admissible) member is Galois-invariant. We also obtain local twisted character identities with respect to this base-change lifting.
We prove modularity lifting theorems for l-adic Galois representations of any dimension satisfying a unitary type condition and a Fontaine-Laffaille type condition at l. This extends the results of Clozel, Harris and Taylor, and the subsequent work by Taylor. The proof uses the Taylor-Wiles method, as improved by Diamond, Fujiwara, Kisin and Taylor, applied to Hecke algebras of unitary groups, and results of Labesse on stable base change and descent from unitary groups to GL_n.
We study the theta lifting for real unitary groups and completely determine the theta lifts of discrete series representations. In particular, we show that these theta lifts can be expressed as cohomologically induced representations in the weakly fair range. This extends a result of J.-S. Li in the case of discrete series representations with sufficiently regular infinitesimal character, whose theta lifts can be expressed as cohomologically induced representations in the good range.
We study the theta lifting for real unitary groups and completely determine the theta lifts of tempered representations. In particular, we show that the theta lifts of (limits of) discrete series representations can be expressed as cohomologically induced representations in the weakly fair range. This extends a result of J.-S. Li in the case of discrete series representations with sufficiently regular infinitesimal character, whose theta lifts can be expressed as cohomologically induced representations in the good range.
This article shows that for unitary dual reductive pairs the first occurrence of theta lift of an irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation is irreducible. It also proves a refined tower property for theta lifts and the involutive property for twisted theta lifts.
The local Oort conjecture states that, if G is cyclic and k is an algebraically closed field of characteristic p, then all G-extensions of k[[t]] should lift to characteristic zero. We prove a critical case of this conjecture. In particular, we show that the conjecture is always true when v_p(|G|) \leq 3, and is true for arbitrarily highly p-divisible cyclic groups G when a certain condition on the higher ramification filtration is satisfied.
In this paper, we give an explicit determination of the non-vanishing of the theta liftings for unitary dual pairs (U(p,q), U(r,s)). Assuming the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture, we determine when theta lifts of tempered representations are nonzero in terms of the local Langlands correspondence.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$. We consider the problem of lifting $p$-cyclic covers of $\Proj_k$ as $p$-cyclic covers of the projective line over some DVR under the condition that the wild monodromy is maximal. We answer positively the question for covers birational to $w^ p-w=tR(t)$ for some additive polynomial $R(t)$.
Let G be a locally analytic group. We use deformation theory and Emerton's 'augmented' Iwasawa modules to study the possible liftings of a given absolutely irreducible smooth modular representation of G to a unitary Banach space representation. Final version. Some minor items changed. Appears in Israel J. Math.
Let U(N) be the quasi-split unitary group in N variables for a quadratic unramified extension of p-adic fields. We compute the characters of simple supercuspidal representations of twisted GL(N) and U(N). Comparing them by the endoscopic character relation, we determine the liftings of simple supercuspidal representations of U(N) to GL(N), under the assumption that p is not equal to 2.
Let $F$ be a finite extension of $Q_p$, $p>2$. We construct admissible unitary completions of certain representations of $GL_2(F)$ on $L$-vector spaces, where $L$ is a finite extension of $F$. When $F=Q_p$ using the results of Berger, Breuil and Colmez we obtain some results about lifting 2-dimensional mod $p$ representations of the absolute Galois group of $Q_p$ to crystabelline representations with given Hodge-Tate weights.
We study finite groups of automorphisms of the $p$-adic open disk. In particular, we generalize results of Green, Matignon and Henrio from cyclic groups of order $p$ to arbitrary finite groups. As an application, we produce a counterexample to a question of Chinburg, Guralnick and Harbater, concerning the local lifting problem for generalized quaternion groups.
We give an explicit description of L-packets and quadratic base change for depth-zero representations of ramified unitary groups in two and three variables. We show that this base change lifting is compatible with a certain lifting of families of representations of finite groups. We conjecture that such a compatibility is valid in much greater generality.
The lifting problem that we consider asks: given a smooth curve in characteristic p and a group of automorphisms, can we lift the curve, along with the automorphisms, to characteristic zero? One can reduce this to a local question (the so-called local lifting problem) involving continuous group actions on formal power series rings. In this expository article, we overview much of the progress that has been made toward determining when the local lifting problem has a solution, and we give a taste of the work currently being undertaken. Of particular interest is the case when the group of automor…
We prove a companion forms theorem for ordinary n-dimensional automorphic Galois representations, by use of automorphy lifting theorems developed by the second author, and a technique for deducing companion forms theorems due to the first author. We deduce results about the possible Serre weights of mod l Galois representations corresponding to automorphic representations on unitary groups. We then use functoriality to prove similar results for automorphic representations of GSp4 over totally real fields.
We describe a special case of base change of certain supercuspidal representations from a ramified unitary group to a general linear group, both defined over a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic. Roughly speaking, we require the underlying stratum of a given supercuspidal representation to be skew maximal simple, and the field datum of this stratum to be of maximal degree, tamely ramified over the base field, and quadratic ramified over its subfield fixed by the Galois involution that defines the unitary group. The base change of this supercuspidal representation is described by a can…
We study the weight part of (a generalisation of) Serre's conjecture for mod l Galois representations associated to automorphic representations on rank two unitary groups for odd primes l. We propose a conjectural set of Serre weights, agreeing with all conjectures in the literature, and under a mild assumption on the image of the mod l Galois representation we are able to show that any modular representation is modular of each conjectured weight. We make no assumptions on the ramification or inertial degrees of l. Our main innovation is to make use of the lifting techniques introduced in our …
We provide a construction of the multiplicative Borcherds lift for unitary groups U(1,m), which takes weakly holomorphic elliptic modular forms and lifts them to meromorphic automorphic forms having infinite product expansions and taking their zeros and poles along Heegner divisors. The result is obtained through the transfer of Borcherds' theory to unitary groups via a suitable embedding of U(1,m) into O(2,2m). Further, we examine the values taken by the Borcherds products around the cusps of the symmetric domain of the unitary group. Finally, as an application of the lifting, we derive a mod…
We show that the finite part of the adjoint $L$ function (including contributions from all nonarchimedean places, including ramified places) is holomorphic in $\Re(s) \ge 1/2$ for a cuspidal automorphic representation of $GL_3$ over a number field. This improves the main result of [H16]. We obtain more general results for twisted adjoint $L$ functions of both $GL_3$ and quasisplit unitary groups. For unitary groups, we explicate the relationship between poles of twisted adjoint $L$ functions, endoscopy, and the structure of the stable base change lifting.
We show that the special unitary group associated to an involution of the second kind on a central division algebra of degree three does not contain hermitian or skew-hermitian elements. Especially, there are no reflections. For Albert's special cyclic presentation we show that the intersections of reasonable $S$-arithmetic subgroups with the two obvious maximal subfields consist of the trivial central elements.
The paper offers versions of Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem for the lifting of points in a cyclic subgroup of an algebraic group to a ramified cover. A version of Bertini Theorem in this context is also obtained.
In this article, we study the Chow group of the motive associated to a tempered global $L$-packet $π$ of unitary groups of even rank with respect to a CM extension, whose global root number is $-1$. We show that, under some restrictions on the ramification of $π$, if the central derivative $L'(1/2,π)$ is nonvanishing, then the $π$-nearly isotypic localization of the Chow group of a certain unitary Shimura variety over its reflex field does not vanish. This proves part of the Beilinson--Bloch conjecture for Chow groups and $L$-functions, which generalizes the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectur…
Let $E/F$ be a cyclic extension of $p$-adic fields and $n$ a positive integer. Arthur and Clozel constructed a base change process $π\mapsto π_E$ which associates to a smooth irreducible representation of $GL_n(F)$ a smooth irreducible representation of $GL_n(E)$, invariant under $Gal(E/F)$. When $π$ is tempered, $π_E$ is tempered and is characterized by an identity (the Shintani character relation) relating the character of $π$ to the character of $π_E$ twisted by the action of $Gal(E/F)$. In this paper we show that the Shintani relation also holds when $π$ is unitary or elliptic. We prove si…
I give an algorithm for computing the full space of automorphic forms for definite unitary groups over Q, and apply this to calculate the automorphic forms of level $G(Z-hat)$ and various small weights for an example of a rank 3 unitary group. This leads to some examples of various types of endoscopic lifting from automorphic forms for U_1 x U_1 x U_1 and U_1 x U_2, and to an example of a non-endoscopic form of weight (3,3) corresponding to a family of 3-dimensional irreducible l-adic Galois representations. I also compute the 2-adic slopes of some automorphic forms with level structure at 2, …
There is a finite number $h_{n,d}$ of tight frames of $n$ distinct vectors for $\mathbb{C}^d$ which are the orbit of a vector under a unitary action of the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_n$. These cyclic harmonic frames (or geometrically uniform tight frames) are used in signal analysis and quantum information theory, and provide many tight frames of particular interest. Here we investigate the conjecture that $h_{n,d}$ grows like $n^{d-1}$. By using a result of Laurent which describes the set of solutions of algebraic equations in roots of unity, we prove the asymptotic estimate $$ h_{n,d} \approx …
Let $π$ be the automorphic representation of $\GSp_4(\A)$ generated by a full level cuspidal Siegel eigenform that is not a Saito-Kurokawa lift, and $τ$ be an arbitrary cuspidal, automorphic representation of $\GL_2(\A)$. Using Furusawa's integral representation for $\GSp_4\times\GL_2$ combined with a pullback formula involving the unitary group $\GU(3,3)$, we prove that the $L$-functions $L(s,π\timesτ)$ are "nice". The converse theorem of Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro then implies that such representations $π$ have a functorial lifting to a cuspidal representation of $\GL_4(\A)$. Combined wit…
In the 1970's, Serre exploited congruences between $q$-expansion coefficients of Eisenstein series to produce $p$-adic families of Eisenstein series and, in turn, $p$-adic zeta functions. Partly through integration with more recent machinery, including Katz's approach to $p$-adic differential operators, his strategy has influenced four decades of developments. Prior papers employing Katz's and Serre's ideas exploiting differential operators and congruences to produce families of automorphic forms rely crucially on $q$-expansions of automorphic forms. The overarching goal of the present paper i…
