A recent study revealed the dynamics of the charge sector of a one-dimensional quarter-filled electronic system with extended Hubbard interactions to be that of an effective pseudospin transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) in the strong coupling limit. With the twin motivations of studying the co-existing charge and spin order found in strongly correlated chain systems and the effects of inter-chain couplings, we investigate the phase diagram of coupled effective (TFIM) systems. A bosonisation and RG analysis for a two-leg TFIM ladder yields a rich phase diagram showing Wigner/Peierls charge order and Neel/dimer spin order. In a broad parameter regime, the orbital antiferromagnetic phase is found to be stable. An intermediate gapless phase of finite width is found to lie in between two charge-ordered gapped phases. Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions are found to lead from the gapless phase to either of the charge-ordered phases. A detailed analysis is also carried out for the dimensional crossover physics when many such pseudospin systems are coupled to one another. Importantly, the analysis reveals the key role of critical quantum fluctuations in driving the strong dispersion in the transverse directions, as well as a T=0 deconfinement transition. Our work is potentially relevant for a unified description of a class of strongly correlated, quarter-filled chain and ladder systems.
Using the density-matrix renormalization group, we determine the phase diagram of the spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice with a nearest neighbor interaction J1 and a frustrating, next-neighbor exchange J2. As frustration increases, the ground state exhibits Neel, plaquette and dimer orders, with critical points at J2/J1 = 0.22 and 0.35. We observe that both the spin gap and the corresponding order parameters vanish continuously at both the critical points, indicating the presence of deconfined quantum criticality.
Recently it was argued that quantum phase transitions can be radically different from classical phase transitions with as a highlight the 'deconfined critical points' exhibiting fractionalization of quantum numbers due to Berry phase effects. Such transitions are supposed to occur in frustrated ('$J_1$-$J_2$') quantum magnets. We have developed a novel renormalization approach for such systems which is fully respecting the underlying lattice structure. According to our findings, another profound phenomenon is around the corner: a fluctuation induced (order-out-of-disorder) first order transiti…
Ca2Y2Cu5O10 is build up from edge-shared CuO4 plaquettes forming spin chains. From inelastic neutron scattering data we extract an in-chain nearest neighbor exchange J1 approximately -170 K and the frustrating next neighbor J2 approximately 32 K interactions, both significantly larger than previous estimates. The ratio alpha= J2/J1 approximately 0.19 places the system very close to the critical point alpha_c=0.25 of the J1-J2 chain, but in the ferromagnetic regime. We establish that the vicinity to criticality only marginally affects the dispersion and coherence of the elementary spin-wave-lik…
The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the two-leg ladder with exchange interactions along the chains, rungs, and diagonals is studied using the Jordan-Wigner transformation and bond-mean-field theory. The inclusion of all three couplings introduces frustration to the system and depending on their relative strengths the ladder can adopt one of three possible magnetically-disordered gapped states. The phase diagram found in this mean-field approach is in very good agreement with the one calculated by Weihong and colleagues using the Lanczos exact diagonalization method. By analyzing the grou…
We study the ground-state (gs) phase diagram of the frustrated spin-1/2 $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$-$J_{3}$ antiferromagnet with $J_{2} = J_{3} =κJ_1$ on the honeycomb lattice, using coupled-cluster theory and exact diagonalization methods. We present results for the gs energy, magnetic order parameter, spin-spin correlation function, and plaquette valence-bond crystal (PVBC) susceptibility. We find a Néel antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase for $κ< κ_{c_{1}} \approx 0.47$, a collinear striped AFM phase for $κ> κ_{c_{2}} \approx 0.60$, and a paramagnetic PVBC phase for $κ_{c_{1}} \lesssim κ\lesssim κ_{c_{2}}$. …
Antiferromagnetic quantum spin systems can exhibit a transition between collinear and spiral ground states, driven by frustration. Classically this is a smooth crossover and the crossover point is termed a Lifshitz point. Quantum fluctuations change the nature of the transition. In particular it has been argued previously that in the two-dimensional (2D) case a spin liquid (SL) state is developed in the vicinity of the Lifshitz point, termed a Lifshitz SL. In the present work, using a field theory approach, we solve the Lifshitz quantum phase transition problem for the 2D frustrated XY-model. …
When magnetic order is suppressed by frustrated interactions, spins form a highly correlated fluctuating "spin liquid" state down to low temperatures. Magnetic order of local moments can also be suppressed when they are fully screened by conduction electrons through the Kondo effect. Thus, the combination of strong geometrical frustration and Kondo screening may lead to novel types of quantum phase transitions. We report low-temperature thermodynamic measurements on the frustrated Kondo lattice Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, which displays a chiral spin liquid state below 1.5 K due to the frustrated inter…
We study a two-dimensional frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the windmill lattice consisting of triangular and dual honeycomb lattice sites. In the classical ground state the spins on different sublattices are decoupled, but quantum and thermal fluctuations drive the system into a coplanar state via an "order from disorder" mechanism. We obtain the finite temperature phase diagram using renormalization group approaches. In the coplanar regime, the relative U$(1)$ phase between the spins on the two sublattices decouples from the remaining degrees of freedom, and is described by a six-sta…
On the basis of an analysis of a 3/4-filled two-dimensional (2D) extended Hubbard model under the fluctuation-exchange approximation, we find Coulomb frustrated phase separation (PS) in a region of nonzero temperature, where the quantum critical phenomenon of charge ordering (CO) dominates. In quasi-2D organic conductors on the verge of CO, this frustrated PS provides a mechanism for generating spatial inhomogeneity, which is characterized by an extremely slow relaxation and an intermediate length scale.
We consider two partially frustrated S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic spin systems on the triangular and pentagonal lattices. In an elementary plaquette of the two lattices, one bond has exchange interaction strength $α$ ($α\leq 1$) whereas all other bonds have exchange interaction strength unity. We show that for $α$ less than a critical value $α_{c}$, collinear Néel-type ordering is possible in the ground state. The ground state energy and the excitation spectrum have been determined using linear spin wave theory based on the Holstein-Primakoff transformation.
We report detailed measurements of the low temperature magnetic phase diagram of Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. Heat capacity and time-of-flight neutron scattering studies of single crystals, subject to magnetic fields applied along the crystallographic [110] direction, reveal unconventional low energy states. Er$^{3+}$ magnetic ions reside on a pyrochlore lattice in Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, where local XY anisotropy and antiferromagnetic interactions give rise to a unique frustrated system. In zero field, the ground state exhibits coexisting short and long range order, accompanied by soft collective spin excit…
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we study the critical behavior of two models of frustrated XY antiferromagnets with a collinear spin ordering and with an additional twofold degeneracy of the ground state. We consider a classic antiferromagnet on a body-centered cubic lattice with an additional antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between next-nearest spins, and a ferromagnet with an extra antiferromagnetic intralayer exchange. In both models, a single first-order transition on the discrete and continuous order parameters is found. Observed critical pseudo-exponents are in agreement with expon…
Investigation of materials that exhibit quantum phase transition provides valuable insights into fundamental problems in physics. We present neutron scattering under pressure in a triangular-lattice antiferromagnet which has a quantum disorder in the low-pressure phase and a noncollinear structure in the high-pressure phase. The neutron spectrum continuously evolves through the critical pressure; a single mode in the disordered state becomes soft with the pressure, and it splits into gapless and gapped modes in the ordered phase. Extended spin-wave theory reveals that the longitudinal and tran…
We study the spin-1 honeycomb lattice magnets with frustrated exchange interactions. The proposed microscopic spin model contains first and second neighbor Heisenberg interactions as well as the single-ion anisotropy. We establish a rich phase diagram that includes a featureless quantum paramagnet and various spin spiral states induced by the mechanism of order by quantum disorder. Although the quantum paramagnet is dubbed featureless, it is shown that, the magnetic excitations develop a contour degeneracy in the reciprocal space at the band minima. These contour degenerate excitations are res…
Quantum phase transitions have captured the interest of a large community in condensed-matter and atom physics research. The common feature of these very different material classes lies in the fact that the competition between low-energy scales can be tuned by a nonthermal parameter, such as pressure, magnetic or electric field, and chemical composition for the condensed-matter systems. In heavy-fermion materials, the strong exchange J between f-electrons and conduction electrons can lead to quenching of the f-electron-derived (nearly) localized magnetic moments via the Kondo effect or, if J b…
We study the challenging thermal phase transition to stripe order in the frustrated square-lattice Ising model with couplings J1<0 (nearest-neighbor, ferromagnetic) and J2>0 (second-neighbor, antiferromagnetic) for g=J2/|J1|>1/2. Using Monte Carlo simulations and known analytical results, we demonstrate Ashkin-Teller criticality for g>= g*, i.e., the critical exponents vary continuously between those of the 4-state Potts model at g=g* and the Ising model for g -> infinity. Thus, stripe transitions offer a route to realizing a related class of conformal field theories with conformal charge c=1 …
We investigate a (semi-)metal to insulator transition (MIT) realized in geometrically frustrated electron systems on the basis of the Hubbard model on a three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice and a two-dimensional checkerboard lattice. Using the renormalization group method and mean field analysis, we show that in the half-filling case, MIT occurs as a result of the interplay between geometrical frustration and electron correlation. In the insulating phase, which has a spin gap, the spin rotational symmetry is not broken, while charge ordering exists. The charge ordered state is stabilized so as…
UNi4B exhibits unusual properties and, in particular, a unique antiferromagnetic arrangement involving only 2/3 of the U sites. Based on the low temperature behavior of this compound, we propose that the remaining 1/3 U sites are nonmagnetic due to the Kondo effect. We derive a model in which the coexistence of magnetic and nonmagnetic U sites is the consequence of the competition between frustration of the crystallographic structure and instability of the 5f moments.
Ordering of frustrated S=1/2 and 1 XY and Heisenberg spin chains with the competing nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings is studied by exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization-group methods. It is found that the S=1 XY chain exhibits both gapless and gapped `chiral' phases characterized by the spontaneous breaking of parity, in which the long-range order parameter is a chirality, $κ_i = S_i^xS_{i+1}^y-S_i^yS_{i+1}^x$, whereas the spin correlation decays either algebraically or exponentially. Such chiral phases are not realized in the S=1/2 XY chain nor…
We explore the magnetic phases in a Kondo lattice model on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice at metallic electron densities, searching for noncollinear and noncoplanar spin textures. Motivated by experimental observations in many rare-earth-based frustrated metallic magnets, we treat the local moments as classical spins and set the coupling between the itinerant electrons and local moments as the largest energy scale in the problem. Our results show that a noncollinear flux state is stabilized over an extended range of Hamiltonian parameters. These spin states can be quen…
Based on a model of a quasi-one dimensional spin-Peierls system doped with non-magnetic impurities, an effective two-dimensional Hamiltonian of randomly distributed S=1/2 spins interacting via long-range pair-wise interaction is studied using a stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo method. The susceptibility shows Curie-like behavior at the lowest temperatures reached although the staggered magnetisation is found to be finite for $T\to 0$. The doping dependance of the corresponding three-dimensional Neel temperature is also computed.
Structural and magnetic properties of the geometrically frustrated layered compound YBaCo4O7 have been studied by magnetization and neutron diffraction. A layered type crystal structure, with alternating tetrahedral layers of Kagomé and triangular types, along the c axis (hexagonal symmetry, space group P63mc) has been found. The oxygen content of the present compound was determined by iodometric titration to be 7.00{\pm}0.01. Presence of a short-range antiferromagnetic ordering (below TN ~ 110 K) has been concluded from the appearance of an addition broad magnetic peak (at Q ~ 1.35 Å-1) in th…
The ground state of the frustrated A-site magnetic spinel CoAl2O4 has been a controversial issue whether it is a collinear antiferromagnetic ordering or a spiral spin - liquid state, as the ratio of the two competing interactions, J2/J1 lies close to the boundary between these two ground states. Here, we address the magnetic ground state in CoAl2O4 with different amount of Co2+/Al3+ site disorder from the study of magnetoelectric effect and Monte Carlo simulations. CoAl2O4 with low site disorder exhibits linear magnetoelectric effect below the magnetic ordering temperature. With increasing dis…
We present neutron scattering measurements on powder samples of the spinel FeSc2S4 that reveal a previously unobserved magnetic ordering transition occurring at 11.8(2)~K. Magnetic ordering occurs subsequent to a subtle cubic-to-tetragonal structural transition which distorts Fe coordinating sulfur tetrahedra lifting the orbital degeneracy. The application of 1~GPa hydrostatic pressure appears to destabilize this Néel state, reducing the transition temperature to 8.6(8)~K and redistributing magnetic spectral weight to higher energies. The relative magnitudes of ordered $\langle m \rangle^2\!=\…
We discuss theoretically phase transitions in frustrated antiferromagnets with biaxial anisotropy or dipolar forces in magnetic field applied along the easy axis at $T=0$. There are well-known sequences of phase transitions upon the field increasing: the conventional spin-flop transition and the flop of the spiral plane at strong and weak easy-axis anisotropy, respectively. We argue that much less studied scenarios can appear at moderate anisotropy in which the magnetic field induces transitions of the first order from the collinear state to phases with spiral orderings. Critical fields of the…
The role of various magnetic inter-chain couplings has been investigated recently by numerical methods in doped frustrated quantum spin chains. A non-magnetic dopant introduced in a gapped spin chain releases a free spin-1/2 soliton. The formation of a local magnetic moment has been analyzed in term of soliton confinement. A four-spin coupling which might originate from cyclic exchange is shown to produce such a confinement. Dopants on different chains experience an effective space-extended non-frustrating pairwise spin interaction. This effective interaction between impurity-spins is long-ran…
We discuss ground state selection by quantum fluctuations in frustrated magnets in a strong magnetic field. We show that there exist dynamical symmetries -- one a generalisation of Henley's gauge-like symmetry for collinear spins, the other the quantum relict of non-collinear weathervane modes -- which ensure a partial survival of the classical degeneracies. We illustrate these for the case of the kagome magnet, where we find zero-point energy differences to be rather small everywhere except near the collinear `up-up-down` configurations, where there is rotational but not translational symmetr…
The role of the multiorbital effects on the emergence of frustrated electronic orders on the triangular lattice at half filling is investigated through an extended spinless fermion Hubbard model. By using two complementary approaches, unrestricted Hartree-Fock and exact diagonalizations, we unravel a very rich phase diagram controlled by the strength of both local and off-site Coulomb interactions and by the interorbital hopping anisotropy ratio $t'/t$. Three robust unconventional electronic phases, a pinball liquid, an inverse pinball liquid, and a large-unit-cell $\sqrt{12} \times \sqrt{12}$…
Low-temperature magnetization curves and thermodynamics of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer with the antiferromagnetic intradimer interaction and either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interdimer interaction are investigated in a highly frustrated parameter region, where localized many-magnon eigenstates provide the most dominant contribution to magnetothermodynamics. Low-energy states of the highly frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer can be accordingly found from a mapping correspondence with an effective triangular-lattice spin-1/2 Ising model in a field. …
Motivated by the proposal of topological quantum paramagnet in the diamond lattice antiferromagnet NiRh$_2$O$_4$, we propose a minimal model to describe the magnetic interaction and properties of the diamond material with the spin-one local moments. Our model includes the first and second neighbor Heisenberg interactions as well as a local single-ion spin anisotropy that is allowed by the spin-one nature of the local moment and the tetragonal symmetry of the system. We point out that there exists a quantum phase transition from a trivial quantum paramagnet when the single-ion spin anisotropy i…
Using the coupled-cluster method for infinite lattices and the exact diagonalization method for finite lattices, we study the influence of an exchange anisotropy Delta on the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 frustrated J1-J2 XXZ antiferromagnet on the square lattice. We find that increasing Delta>1 (i.e. an Ising type easy-axis anisotropy) as well as decreasing Delta<1 (i.e. an XY type easy-plane anisotropy) both lead to a monotonic shrinking of the parameter region of the magnetically disordered quantum phase. Finally, at Delta~1.9 this quantum phase disappears, whereas in pure XY l…
We report on a heat capacity study of high quality single crystal samples of \lcvo\ -- a frustrated spin $S=1/2$ chain system -- in magnetic field amounting to 3/4 of the saturation field. At low fields up to about 7~T, a linear temperature dependence of the specific heat, $C_p\propto T$, resulting from 1D magnetic correlations in the spin chains is followed upon cooling by a sharp lambda anomaly of the transition into a 3D helical phase with $C_p\propto T^3$ behavior at low temperature. The transition from a spin liquid into a spin-modulated (SM) phase at higher fields occurs via a hump-like …
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron diffaction (ND), x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on the frustrated A-site spinel CoAl2O4 compound reveal a collinear antiferromagnetic ordering below Tn = 9.8(2) K. A high quality powder sample characterized by x-ray diffraction that indicates a relatively low Co-Al inversion parameter x = 0.057(20) in (Co1-xAlx)[Al2-xCox]O4, shows a broad maximum around 15 K in magnetic susceptibility and a sharp peak at Tn in heat capacity. The average ordered magnetic moment of Co^2+ (S = 3/2) ions at the A-site is estimated…
We perform a general study of spin ordering on the pyrochlore lattice with a 3:1 proportionality of two spin polarizations. Equivalently, this describes valence bond solid conformations of a quantum dimer model on the diamond lattice. We determine the set of likely low temperature ordered phases, on the assumption that the ordering is weak, i.e the system is close to a ``U(1)'' quantum spin liquid in which the 3:1 proportionality is maintained but the spins are strongly fluctuating. The nature of the 9 ordered states we find is determined by a ``projective symmetry'' analysis. All the phases e…
This review article is devoted to the interplay between frustrated magnetism and quantum critical phenomena, covering both theoretical concepts and ideas as well as recent experimental developments in correlated-electron materials. The first part deals with local-moment magnetism in Mott insulators and the second part with frustration in metallic systems. In both cases, frustration can either induce exotic phases accompanied by exotic quantum critical points or lead to conventional ordering with unconventional crossover phenomena. In addition, the competition of multiple phases inherent to fru…
Frustrated magnets are one class of fascinating materials that host many intriguing phases such as spin ice, spin liquid and complex long-range magnetic orderings at low temperatures. In this work we use first-principles calculations to find that in a wide range of magnetically frustrated oxides, at zero temperature a number of non-collinear magnetic orderings are more stable than the type-I collinear ordering that is observed at finite temperatures. The emergence of non-collinear orderings in those complex oxides is due to higher-order exchange interactions that originate from second-row and …
In the light of recent interesting experimental work on MgV$_2$O$_4$ we employ the density functional theory to investigate the crucial role played by different interaction parameters in deciding its electronic and magnetic properties. The strong Coulomb correlation in presence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling is responsible for the insulating ground state. In the ground state the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals are ordered and intra-chain vanadium ions are antiferromagnetically coupled. The calculation gives small spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which provides a tilt of $\sim11.3^0$ to the magne…
We predict that an external field can induce a spin order in highly frustrated classical Heisenberg magnets. We find analytically stabilization of collinear states by thermal fluctuations at a one-third of the saturation field for kagome and garnet lattices and at a half of the saturation field for pyrochlore and frustrated square lattices. This effect is studied numerically for the frustrated square-lattice antiferromagnet by Monte Carlo simulations for classical spins and by exact diagonalization for $S=1/2$. The field induced collinear states have a spin gap and produce magnetization platea…
We report detailed dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, specific heat, and thermal conductivity measurements on the frustrated magnet ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$. At low temperatures, with increasing magnetic field, this spinel material goes through a series of spin state transitions from the helix spin state to the spiral spin state and then to the fully polarized state. Our results indicate a direct quantum phase transition from the spiral spin state to the fully polarized state. As the system approaches the quantum criticality, we find strong quantum fluctuations of the spins with the behaviors such as …
Magnetic excitations in the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (TLHA) CuCrO2 were studied using single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering. A diffusive quasielastic component that persisted without developing a correlation length over a wide temperature range both below and above the ordering temperature was observed. Furthermore, characteristic momentum dependence was observed that was reproduced using minimum spin clusters. The robust spin clusters contrast with conventional magnetic ordering and may be universal in TLHAs.
CePdAl with Ce $4f$ moments forming a distorted kagomé network is one of the scarce materials exhibiting Kondo physics and magnetic frustration simultaneously. As a result, antiferromagnetic (AF) order setting in at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 2.7$~K encompasses only two thirds of the Ce moments. We report measurements of the specific heat, $C$, and the magnetic Grüneisen parameter, $Γ_{\rm mag}$, on single crystals of CePd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$Al with $x\leq 0.16$ at temperatures down to 0.05~K and magnetic fields $B$ up to $8$~T. Field-induced quantum criticality for various concentrations is observed with th…
The crossover from localized- to itinerant-electron behavior is associated with many intriguing phenomena in condensed-matter physics. In this paper, we investigate the crossover from localized to itinerant regimes in the spinel system Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$V$_2$O$_4$. At low Co doping, orbital order (OO) of the localized electrons on the V3+ ions suppresses magnetic frustration by triggering a tetragonal distortion. With Co doping, electronic itinerancy melts the OO and suppresses the structural phase transition while the reduced spin-lattice coupling produces magnetic frustration. Neutron scatteri…
We investigate the interplay of quantum fluctuations and magnetic anisotropies in metallic ferromagnets. Our central result is that fluctuations close to a quantum critical point can drive the moments to point along a magnetic hard axis. As a proof of concept, we show this behavior explicitly for a generic two-band model with local Coulomb and Hund's interactions, and a spin-orbit-induced easy plane anisotropy. The phase diagram is calculated within the fermionic quantum order-by-disorder approach, which is based on a self-consistent free energy expansion around a magnetically ordered state wi…
FeF$_3$, with its half-filled Fe$^{3+}$ $3d$ orbital, hence zero orbital angular momentum and $S=5/2$, is often put forward as a prototypical highly-frustrated classical Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet. By employing {\it ab initio} density functional theory (DFT), we obtain an effective spin Hamiltonian for this material. This Hamiltonian contains nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg, bi-quadratic and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions as dominant terms and we use Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the nonzero temperature properties of this minimal model. We find that upon d…
Effects of geometrical frustration in low-dimensional charge ordering systems are theoretically studied, mainly focusing on dynamical properties. We treat extended Hubbard models at quarter-filling, where the frustration arises from competing charge ordered patterns favored by different intersite Coulomb interactions, which are effective models for various charge transfer-type molecular conductors and transition metal oxides. Two different lattice structures are considered: (a) one-dimensional chain with intersite Coulomb interaction of nearest neighbor V_1 and that of next-nearest neighbor V_…
We report a density-matrix renormalization group study of the $t$-$J$ model with nearest ($t_1$ & $J_1$) and next-nearest ($t_2$ & $J_2$) interactions on a 4-leg cylinder with concentration $δ=1/8$ of doped holes. We observe an astonishingly complex interplay between uniform $d$-wave superconductivity (SC) and strong spin and charge density wave ordering tendencies (SDW and CDW). Depending on parameters, the CDWs can be commensurate with period 4 or 8. By comparing the charge ordering vectors with $2 k_F$, we rule out Fermi surface nesting-induced density wave order in our model. Magnetic frus…
We study the dynamical response of frustrated, quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets at finite temperatures. We allow for the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We concentrate on a model of weakly coupled planes of anisotropic triangular lattices. Combining exact results for the dynamical response of one dimensional Heisenberg chains with a Random Phase Approximation (RPA) in the frustrated interchain couplings, we calculate the dynamical susceptibility in the disordered phase. We investigate the instability of the disordered phase to the formation of collect…
We present a quantum theory of frustrated diamond lattice antiferromagnets. Considering quantum fluctuations as the predominant mechanism relieving spin frustration, we find a rich phase diagram comprising of six phases with coplanar spiral ordering in addition to the Néel phase. By computing the specific heat of these ordered phases, we obtain a remarkable agreement between $(k,k,0)$-spiral ordering and the experimental specific heat data for the diamond lattice spinel compounds MnSc$_2$S$_4$, Co$_3$O$_4$ and CoRh$_2$O$_4$, i.e. specific heat data is a strong evidence for $(k,k,0)$-spiral ord…
Near quantum Lifshitz points the stiffness of the lifetime of the spin fluctuations is very small. This gives rise to a regime where the critical fluctuations are local in space but extended along the time directions. The Fermi liquid properties in this local quantum regime is governed by a single energy scale, the coherence temperature. These results are relevant for heavy fermions and frustrated systems whenever there is a competition between different instabilities in $q$-space.
The AR$_2$O$_4$ family (R = rare earth) have recently been attracting interest as a new series of frustrated magnets, with the magnetic R atoms forming zigzag chains running along the $c$-axis. We have investigated polycrystalline BaNd$_2$O$_4$ with a combination of magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) measurements. Magnetic Bragg peaks are observed below $T_N$ $=$ 1.7 K, and they can be indexed with a propagation vector of $\vec{k}$ $=$ (0 1/2 1/2). The signal from magnetic diffraction is well described by long-range ordering from only one of the two types of Nd …
The phase diagram of the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model of spinless fermions coupled to quantum phonons is determined by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. It differs significantly from previous work. In addition to Luttinger liquid and bond-order-wave (BOW) phases, we find an extended charge-density-wave (CDW) phase. Because of different broken symmetries, BOW and CDW phases are connected by a retardation-driven phase transition. Our results are consistent with the theory of the frustrated $XXZ$ chain, including unconventional power-law exponents at criticality, and an interpretatio…
We study the ground state ordering of quadrupolar ordered $S=1$ magnets as a function of spin dilution probability $p$ on the triangular lattice. In sharp contrast to the ordering of $S=1/2$ dipolar Néel magnets on percolating clusters, we find that the quadrupolar magnets are quantum disordered at the percolation threshold, $p=p^*$. Further we find that long-range quadrupolar order is present for all $p<p^*$ and vanishes first exactly at $p^*$. Strong evidence for scaling behavior close to $p^*$ points to an unusual quantum criticality without fine tuning that arises from an interplay of quan…
We report comprehensive studies of the crystallographic, magnetic, and thermal properties of a spinel-type magnetically frustrated compound, CoAl2O4, and a magnetically diluted system,Co1-xZnxAl2O4. These studies revealed the effects of dilution and disorder when the tetrahedral magnetic Co ion was replaced by the nonmagnetic Zn ion. Low-temperature anomalies were observed in magnetic susceptibility at x < 0.6. A multicritical point was apparent at T = 3.4 K and x = 0.12, where the antiferromagnetic, spin glass-like, and paramagnetic phases met. At that point, the quenched ferromagnetic compone…
Building on recent neutron and NMR experiments, we investigate the field-induced exotic criticality observed in the frustrated spin-1/2 dimer compound BaCuSi2O6 using a frustrated model with two types of bilayers. A semiclassical treatment of the effective hard-core boson model shows that perfect inter-layer frustration leads to a 2D-like critical exponent phi=1 without logarithmic corrections and to a 3D low temperature phase with different but non vanishing triplet populations in both types of bilayers. These results further suggest a simple phenomenology in terms of a field-dependent transv…
We investigate properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model with extended and biquadratic interactions, which captures crucial aspects of the low energy physics in FeSe. While we show that the model exhibits a rich phase diagram with four different magnetic ordering tendencies, we identify a parameter regime with strong competition between Nèel, staggered dimer, and stripe-like magnetic fluctuations, accounting for the physical properties of FeSe. Through the comparison of numerically evaluated spin and Raman response with experiments, we find evidence for enhanced magnetic frustration between Nèel…
