Frustrated magnets are one class of fascinating materials that host many intriguing phases such as spin ice, spin liquid and complex long-range magnetic orderings at low temperatures. In this work we use first-principles calculations to find that in a wide range of magnetically frustrated oxides, at zero temperature a number of non-collinear magnetic orderings are more stable than the type-I collinear ordering that is observed at finite temperatures. The emergence of non-collinear orderings in those complex oxides is due to higher-order exchange interactions that originate from second-row and third-row transition metal elements. This implies a collinear-to-noncollinear spin transition at sufficiently low temperatures in those frustrated complex oxides. Furthermore, we find that in a particular oxide Ba$_2$YOsO$_6$, experimentally feasible uniaxial strain can tune the material between two different non-collinear magnetic orderings. Our work predicts new non-collinear magnetic orderings in frustrated complex oxides at very low temperatures and provides a mechanical route to tuning complex non-collinear magnetic orderings in those materials.
The correct stacking of hexagonal layers is used to obtain accurate estimates for the exchange and anisotropy parameters of the geometrically-frustrated antiferromagnet CuFeO$_2$. Those parameters are highly constrained by the stability of a collinear metamagnetic phase between fields of 13.5 and 20 T. Constrained fits of the spin-wave frequencies of the collinear $\uudd $ phase below 7 T are used to identify the magnetic unit cell of the metamagnetic $\uuudd $ phase, which contains two hexagonal layers and 10 Fe$^{3+}$ spins.
Magnetic frustration in three dimensions (3D) manifests itself in the spin-$\frac12$ insulator Li$_2$CuW$_2$O$_8$. Density-functional band-structure calculations reveal a peculiar spin lattice built of triangular planes with frustrated interplane couplings. The saturation field of 29 T contrasts with the susceptibility maximum at 8.5 K and a relatively low Néel temperature $T_N\simeq 3.9$ K. Magnetic order below $T_N$ is collinear with the propagation vector $(0,\frac12,0)$ and an ordered moment of 0.65(4) $μ_B$ according to neutron diffraction data. This reduced ordered moment together with t…
The interplay of non-local Coulomb repulsion and Hund's coupling in the d-orbital manifold in frustrated triangular lattices is analyzed by a mutliband extended Hubbard model. We find a rich phase diagram with several competing phases, including a robust pinball liquid phase, which is an unconventional metal characterized by threefold charge order, bad metallic behavior and the emergence of high spin local moments. Our results naturally explain the anomalous charge-ordered metallic state observed in the triangular layered compound AgNiO2. The potential relevance to other triangular transition …
A layered iron oxide \rfeo ($R$: rare-earth elements) is an exotic dielectric material with charge-order (CO) driven electric polarization and magnetoelectric effect caused by spin-charge coupling. In this paper, a theory of electronic structure and dielectric property in \rfeo is presented. Charge frustration in paired-triangular lattices allows a charge imbalance without inversion symmetry. Spin frustration induces reinforcement of this polar CO by a magnetic ordering. We also analyze an orbital model for the Fe ion which does not show a conventional long-range order.
Dielectric and magnetic phenomena in spin and charge frustrated system RFe2O4 (R is a rare-earth metal ion) are studied. An electronic model for charge, spin and orbital degrees in a pair of triangular-lattice planes is derived. We analyze this model by utilizing the mean-field approximation and the Monte-Carlo simulation in a finite size cluster. A three fold-type charge ordered structure with charge imbalance between the planes is stabilized in finite temperatures. This polar charge order is reinforced by spin ordering of Fe ions. This novel magneto-dielectric phenomenon is caused by spin fr…
Specific heat and magnetization measurements have been carried out under a range of magnetic fields on single crystals of Ca3Co2O6. This compound is composed of Ising magnetic chains that are arranged on a triangular lattice. The intrachain and interchain couplings are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively. This situation gives rise to geometrical frustration, that bears some similarity to the classical problem of a two-dimensional Ising triangular antiferromagnet. This paper reports on the ordering process at low-T and the possibility of one-dimensional features at high-T.
Specific heat measurements were carried out on the closely related spin-chain oxides Ca3Co2O6 and Ca3CoRhO6. Both compounds consist of Ising magnetic chains that are arranged on a triangular lattice. The spin coupling along and between the chains are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively. Geometrical frustration is expected from the combination of these magnetic features. The present study reports that the specific heat data of these compounds exhibit similarities in the spin-freezing process at low T, whereas striking differences exist in the antiferromagnetic interchain ordering …
The crystal and magnetic structures and underlying magnetic interactions of Bi4Fe5O13F, a model system for studying the physics of the Cairo pentagonal spin lattice, are investigated by transmission electron microscopy, low-temperature synchrotron x-ray and neutron powder diffraction, thermodynamic measurements, and density functional band-structure calculations. The crystal structure of Bi4Fe5O13F contains infinite rutile-like chains of edge-sharing FeO6 octahedra interconnected by the Fe2O7 groups of two corner-sharing FeO4 tetrahedra. The cavities between the chains are filled with the fluo…
A novel general method of describing the spin-lattice interactions in magnetic solids was proposed in terms of first principles calculations. The spin exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions as well as their derivatives with respect to atomic displacements can be evaluated efficiently on the basis of density functional calculations for four ordered spin states. By taking into consideration the spin-spin interactions, the phonons, and the coupling between them, we show that the ground state structure of a representative spin-frustrated spinel, MgCr2 O4, is tetragonally distorted, in agr…
We investigate the magnetic properties of Ru$_{2}$Mn$Z$ ($Z$ = Sn, Sb, Ge, Si) chemically ordered full Heusler compounds for zero as well as finite temperatures. Based on first principles calculations we derive the interatomic isotropic bilinear and biquadratic couplings between Mn atoms from the paramagnetic state. We find frustrated isotropic couplings for all compounds and in case of $Z$ = Si and Sb a nearest-neighbor biquadratic coupling that favors perpendicular alignment between the Mn spins. By using an extended classical Heisenberg model in combination with spin dynamics simulations we…
We present a model describing the lattice distortion and incommensurate magnetic order in the spinel CdCr2O4, a good realization of the Heisenberg "pyrochlore" antiferromagnet. The magnetic frustration is relieved through the spin-Peierls distortion of the lattice involving a phonon doublet with odd parity. The distortion stablizes a collinear magnetic order with the propagation wavevector q=2π(0,0,1). The lack of inversion symmetry makes the crystal structure chiral. The handedness is transferred to magnetic order by the relativistic spin-orbit coupling: the collinear state is twisted into a …
Interfaces between correlated complex oxides are promising avenues to realize new forms of magnetism that arise as a result of charge transfer, proximity effects and locally broken symmetries. We report upon the discovery of a non-collinear magnetic structure in superlattices of the ferromagnetic metallic oxide La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) and the correlated metal LaNiO3 (LNO). The exchange interaction between LSMO layers is mediated by the intervening LNO, such that the angle between the magnetization of neighboring LSMO layers varies in an oscillatory manner with the thickness of the LNO layer. The…
Towards next-generation spintronics devices, such as computer memories and logic chips, it is necessary to satisfy high thermal stability, low-power consumption and high spin-polarization simultaneously. Here, from first-principles, we investigate thermal stability (both structure and magnetization) and the electric field control of magnetic anisotropy on Co2FeAl (CFA)/MgO. A phase diagram of structural thermal stability of the CFA/MgO interface is illustrated. An interfacial perpendicular-anisotropy, coming from the Fe-O orbital hybridization, provides high magnetic thermal stability and a lo…
We study the $3d$ substitution in $4d$ transition metal oxides in the cases of $3d^3$ doping at either $3d^2$ or $4d^4$ sites which realize orbital dilution. We derive the effective $3d-4d$ (or $3d-3d$) superexchange in a Mott insulator with different ionic valencies, underlining the emerging structure of the spin-orbital coupling between the impurity and the host sites and demonstrate that it is qualitatively different from that encountered in the host itself. This derivation shows that the interaction between the host and the impurity depends in a crucial way on the type of doubly occupied $…
Collinear and non-collinear spin structures of wurtzite phase CoO often appearing in nano-sized samples are investigated using first-principles density functional theory calculations. We examined the total energy of several different spin configurations, electronic structure and the effective magnetic coupling strengths. It is shown that the AF3-type antiferromagnetic ordering is energetically most stable among possible collinear configurations. Further, we found that a novel spiral spin order can be stabilized by including the relativistic spin-orbit coupling and the non-collinearity of spin …
Magnetism in single-side hydrogenated (C$_2$H) and fluorinated (C$_2$F) graphene is analyzed in terms of the Heisenberg model with parameters determined from first principles. We predict a frustrated ground state for both systems, which means the instability of collinear spin structures and sheds light on the absence of a conventional magnetic ordering in defective graphene demonstrated in recent experiments. Moreover, our findings suggest a highly correlated magnetic behavior at low temperatures offering the possibility of a spin-liquid state.
This work examines the critical anisotropy required for the local stability of the collinear ground states of a geometrically-frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLA). Using a Holstein-Primakoff expansion, we calculate the spin-wave frequencies for the 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8-sublattice (SL) ground states of a TLA with up to third neighbor interactions. Local stability requires that all spin-wave frequencies are real and positive. The 2, 4, and 8-SL phases break up into several regions where the critical anisotropy is a different function of the exchange parameters. We find that the criti…
We investigate the frustrated magnetic interactions in cubic transition metal oxides with orbital degeneracy. The $e_g$ orbitals order easier and their ordering explains the $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase in KCuF$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$. In $t_{2g}$ systems the magnetic order changes at a transition from an orbital liquid to orbital ordered states. The fluctuations of $t_{2g}$ orbitals play a prominent role in LaVO$_3$ and YVO$_3$, where they compete with the Jahn-Teller effect and trigger the C-type antiferromagnetic order.
CuAl2O4 is a normal spinel oxide having quantum spin, S=1/2 for Cu2+. It is a rather unique feature that the Cu2+ ions of CuAl2O4 sit at a tetrahedral position, not like the usual octahedral position for many oxides. At low temperatures, it exhibits all the thermodynamic evidence of a quantum spin glass. For example, the polycrystalline CuAl2O4 shows a cusp centered at ~2 K in the low-field dc magnetization data and a clear frequency dependence in the ac magnetic susceptibility while it displays logarithmic relaxation behavior in a time dependence of the magnetization. At the same time, there …
We set forth the structural and magnetic properties of the frustrated spin-$5/2$ triangle lattice antiferromagnet Na$_3$Fe(PO$_4$)$_2$ examined via x-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction measurements on the polycrystalline sample. No structural distortion was detected from the temperature-dependant x-ray diffraction down to 12.5 K, except a systematic lattice contraction. The magnetic susceptibility at high temperatures agrees well with the high-temperature series expansion for a spin-$5/2$ isotropic triangular lattice antiferromagnet with an average exchange …
We review ground states and excitations of a quantum antiferromagnet on triangular and other frustrated lattices. We pay special attention to the combined effects of magnetic field h, spatial anisotropy R, and spin magnitude S. The focus of the review is on the novel collinear spin density wave and spin nematic states, which are characterized by fully gapped transverse spin excitations with $S^z = \pm 1$. We discuss extensively R-h phase diagram of the antiferromagnet, both in the large-S semiclassical limit and the quantum S=1/2 limit. When possible, we point out connections with experimental…

Birnessite compounds are stable across a wide range of compositions that produces a remarkable diversity in their physical, electrochemical and functional properties. These are hydrated analogues of the magnetically frustrated, mixed-valent manganese oxide structures, with general formula, NaxMnO2. Here we demonstrate that the direct hydration of layered rock-salt type a-NaMnO2, with the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice topology, yields the birnessite type oxide, Na0.36MnO2 0.2H2O, transforming its magnetic properties. This compound has a much-expanded interlayer spacing compared to…

In the spirit of searching for Gd-based, frustrated, rare earth magnets, we have found antiferomagnetism (AF) in GdPtPb which crystallizes in the ZrNiAl-type structure that has a distorted Kagomé lattice of Gd-triangles. Single crystals were grown and investigated using structural, magnetic, transport and thermodynamic measurements. GdPtPb orders antiferromagnetically at 15.5 K arguably with a planar, non-collinear structure. The high temperature magnetic susceptibility data reveal an "anti-frustration" behavior having a frustration parameter, $|f|$ = $|Θ|$/ $T_N$ = 0.25, which can be explaine…
A description of non-collinear magnetism in the framework of spin-density functional theory is presented for the exact exchange energy functional which depends explicitly on two-component spinor orbitals. The equations for the effective Kohn-Sham scalar potential and magnetic field are derived within the optimized effective potential (OEP) framework. With the example of a magnetically frustrated Cr monolayer it is shown that the resulting magnetization density exhibits much more non-collinear structure than standard calculations. Furthermore, a time-dependent generalization of the non-collinea…
The competing magnetic ground states of the itinerant magnet EuCuSb, which has a hexagonal layered structure, were studied via magnetization, resistivity, and neutron diffraction measurements on single-crystal samples. EuCuSb has a three-dimensional semimetallic band structure as confirmed by band calculation and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, consistent with the nearly isotropic metallic conductivity in the paramagnetic state. However, below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of TN1 (8.5 K), the resistivity, especially along the hexagonal axis, increases significantly. T…
Motivated by recent experimental results on GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ [Khanh, N.D., Nakajima, T., Yu, X. et al., \emph{Nat. Nanotechnol.} \textbf{15}, 444-449 (2020)], where nanometric square skyrmion lattice was observed, we propose simple analytical mean-field description of the high-temperature part of the phase diagram of centrosymmetric tetragonal frustrated antiferromagnets with dipolar interaction in the external magnetic field. In the reciprocal space dipolar forces provide momentum dependent biaxial anisotropy. It is shown that in tetragonal lattice in the large part of the Brillouin zone for mu…
Magnetic properties of an antiferromagnetic double perovskite oxide Ba2CaReO6, where Re6+ (5d1) ions with large spin-orbit coupling are arranged on the face-centered-cubic lattice, are investigated using pulsed high magnetic field up to 66 T. Magnetization and magnetostriction measurements have revealed a magnetic field induced phase transition at around 50 T. The phase transition accompanies a jump of magnetization and longitudinal magnetostriction of approximately 2 10^(-4) with the change of power law behavior, indicating sizable coupling between the electronic degrees of freedom and the la…
We have studied the Heisenberg antiferromagnets on two-dimensional frustrated lattices, triangular and kagome lattices using linear spin-wave theory. A collinear ground state ordering is possible if one of the three bonds in each triangular plaquette of the lattice becomes weaker or frustrated. We study spiral order in the Heisenberg model along with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and in the presence of a magnetic field. The quantum corrections to the ground state energy and sublattice magnetization are calculated analytically in the case of triangular lattice with nearesr-neighbour in…
We study the magnetic properties of small Mn ring shaped clusters on a Pt(111) surface in the framework of density functional theory. We find that the Mn atoms possess large magnetic moments, of the order of 4uB/atom, and have dominating antiferromagnetic interatomic exchange interactions. A quantum confinement effect within the ring like clusters was found, indicating that even very small clusters can be seen as quantum corrals. The antiferromagnetic exchange couplings lead to collinear magnetic arrangements in simple corrals, as well as complex non-collinear ordering, as vortex-like structur…
The $4d$ and $5d$ transition metal oxides have become important members of the emerging quantum materials family due to competition between onsite Coulomb repulsion ($U$) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Specifically, the systems with $d^5$ electronic configuration in an octahedral environment are found to be capable of posessing invariant semimetallic state and perturbations can lead to diverse magnetic phases. In this work, by formulating a multi-band Hubbard model and performing SOC tunable DFT+$U$ calculations on a prototype SrIrO$_3$ and extending the analysis to other iso-structural and is…
Double magnetic transition, complex field-induced phases, and large magnetocaloric effect in the frustrated garnet compound Mn$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$Ge$_{3}$O$_{12}$
We consider the superexchange in `frustrated' Jahn-Teller systems, such as the transition metal oxides NaNiO_2, LiNiO_2, and ZnMn_2O_4, in which transition metal ions with doubly degenerate orbitals form a triangular or pyrochlore lattice and are connected by the 90-degree metal-oxygen-metal bonds. We show that this interaction is much different from a more familiar exchange in systems with the 180-degree bonds, e.g. perovskites. In contrast to the strong interplay between the orbital and spin degrees of freedom in perovskites, in the 90-degree exchange systems spins and orbitals are decoupled…
A magneto-optical survey was conducted for HgCr$_2$O$_4$ powder samples under pulsed high magnetic fields of up to 55 T. Intensity changes in magnetic fields observed for the exciton-magnon-phonon optical transition spectra coincide well with those of magnetization, lattice distortion from X-ray diffraction, and electron-magnetic resonances. The last-ordered phase was detected prior to the fully polarized magnetic phase, similarly to the other chromium spinel oxide, ZnCr$_2$O$_4$ and CdCr$_2$O$_4$.
From the first-principles calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of compound Na$_2$Ti$_2$Pn$_2$O (Pn = As or Sb). We find that in the ground state Na$_2$Ti$_2$As$_2$O is a blocked checkerboard antiferromagnetic semiconductor with a small band gap of about 0.15 eV, in contrast, Na$_2$Ti$_2$Sb$_2$O is a bi-collinear antiferromagnetic semimetal, both with a small moment of about 0.5$μ_B$ around each Ti atom. We show that there is a strong Fermi surface nesting in Na$_2$Ti$_2$Pn$_2$O. And we verify that the blocked checkerboard and bi-collinear antiferromagnetic state…
Weyl semimetal is a topologically non-trivial phase of matter with pairs of Weyl nodes in the k-space, which act as monopole and anti-monopole pairs of Berry curvature. Two hallmarks of the Weyl metallic state are the topological surface state called the Fermi arc and the chiral anomaly. It is known that the chiral anomaly yields anomalous magneto-transport phenomena. In this study, we report the emergence of the type-II Weyl semimetallic state in the geometrically frustrated non-collinear antiferromagnetic Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) GdB4 crystal. When we apply magnetic fields perpendicu…
We have investigated magnetoelectric coupling in the single-molecule magnet $\mathrm{Mn}_{4}\mathrm{Te}_{4}(\mathrm{P}\mathrm{Et}_{3})_{4}$ with tetrahedral spin frustration. Our density functional studies found that an electric dipole moment can emerge with various non-collinear spin orderings. The forms of spin-dependent dipole are determined and consistent with that in non-centrosymmetric magnets driven by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Writing a parameterized spin Hamiltonian, after solving for eigenvalues and eigenstates we quantified the magnetoelectric coupling by calculating th…
Cupric oxide is multiferroic at unusual high temperatures. From density functional calculations we find that the low-T magnetic phase is paraelectric and the higher-T one ferroelectric, with a size and direction of polarization in good agreement with experiment. By mapping of the ab initio results on an effective spin model we find with Monte Carlo that in the high-T magnetic state non-collinearity and inversion symmetry breaking stabilize each other via the Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction. This leads to a novel mechanism for multiferroicity, with the particular property that non-magnetic im…
We point out that the existing experimental data of most manganese oxides show the {\sl frustrated} p-wave superconducting condensation in the ferromagnetic phase in the sense that the superconducting coherence is not long enough to cover the whole system. The superconducting state is similar to the $A_{1}$ state in superfluid He-3. The sharp drop of resistivity, the steep jump of specific heat, and the gap opening in tunneling are well understood in terms of the p-wave pairing. In addition, colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) is naturally explained by the superconducting fluctuations with increa…
We investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of the pyrochlore oxide Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ using the density-functional theory plus on-site repulsion ($U$) method, and depict the ground-state phase diagram with respect to $U$. We conclude that the all-in/all-out non-collinear magnetic order is stable in a wide range of $U$. We also show that the easy-axis anisotropy arising from the spin-orbit (SO) coupling plays a significant role in stabilizing the all-in/all-out magnetic order. A \textit{pseudo gap} was observed near the transition between the antiferromagnetic metallic and insulating…
The single crystal study of CaBaCo4O7, a non collinear ferrimagnet (TC=64K), with a polar orthorhombic space group (Pbn21) between 4 K and 293 K, shows the appearance below TC of a large electric polarization along its c axis, reaching 17mC.m-2 at 10K. At 62.5K, a magnetic field driven giant variation of polarization, P(9T)-P(0T)=8mC.m-2, is observed. Moreover, the present magnetoelectric measurements, are fully consistent with the m'm2' magnetic point group, strongly supporting that this oxide is also ferrotoroidic. This ferrimagnetic oxide, which belongs to the '114' structural family, opens…
The complex metal oxides Mn2ASbO6 (A=In, Sc) with a corundum-related structure A3BO6 have been prepared as polycrystalline powders by a solid state reaction route. The crystal structure and magnetic properties have been investigated using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron microscopy, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. At room temperature these compounds adopt a trigonal structure, space group R-3 with a = 8.9313(1) Å, c = 10.7071(2) Å (for In) and a = 8.8836(1) Å, c = 10.6168(2) Å (for Sc) which persists down to 1.6 K. The Mn and A cations were found to be ra…
We report a comprehensive investigation of the average and local structure of La$_{5.4}$WO$_{12-δ}$, which has excellent mixed proton, electron and oxide ion conduction suitable for device applications. Synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction show that a cubic fluorite supercell describes the average structure, with highly disordered lanthanum and oxide positions. On average the tungsten sites are six-fold coordinated, and we detect a trace (4.4(2) %) of anti-site disorder. In addition to sharp Bragg reflections, strong diffuse neutron scattering is observed, which hints at short-rang…
The effects of quantum fluctuations due to directional anisotropy and frustration between nearest neighbors and next-nearest neighbors of the quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice are investigated using spin-wave expansion. We have calculated the spin-wave energy dispersion in the entire Brillouin zone, renormalized spin-wave velocities, and the magnetization up to second order in 1/S expansion for the antiferromagnetic Neel and collinear antiferromagnetic stripe phases. It is shown that the second-order corrections become significant with increase in frustration. Wit…
In this paper we present results of our calculations of the non-collinear spin density distribution in the systems with frustrated triangular magnetic structure (Mn-based antiperovskite compounds, Mn_{3}AN (A=Ga, Zn)) in the ground state and under external mechanical strain. We show that the spin density in the (111)-plane of the unit cell forms a "domain" structure around each atomic site but it has a more complex structure than the uniform distribution of the rigid spin model, i.e. Mn atoms in the (111)-plane form non-uniform "spin clouds", with the shape and size of these "domains" being fu…
Complex magnetic order arises due to the competition of different interactions between the magnetic moments. Recently, there has been an increased interest in such states not only to unravel the fundamental physics involved, but also with regards to applications exploiting their unique interplay with moving electrons. Whereas it is the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) that has attracted much attention because of its nature to induce non-collinear magnetic order including magnetic-field stabilized skyrmions, it is the frustration of exchange interactions that can drive magnetic order dow…
