We consider the doped Rokhsar-Kivelson quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice with one mobile hole (monomer) at the Rokhsar-Kivelson point. The motion of the hole is described by two branches of excitations: the hole may either move with or without a trapped Z2 vortex (vison). We perform a study of the hole dispersion in the limit where the hole hopping amplitude is much smaller than the interdimer interaction. In this limit, the hole without vison moves freely and has a tight-binding spectrum. On the other hand, the hole with a trapped vison is strongly constrained due to interference effects and can only move via higher-order virtual processes.
With the classical Monte Carlo method, I find the energy gap in the Rokhsar-Kivelson dimer model on the triangular lattice. I identify the lowest excitations as visons, and compute their energy as a function of the momentum.
A platform for constructing microscopic Hamiltonians describing bosonic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states is presented. The Hamiltonians we consider are examples of frustration-free Rokhsar-Kivelson models, which are known to be in one-to-one correspondence with classical stochastic systems in the same spatial dimensionality. By exploring this classical-quantum mapping, we are able to construct a large class of microscopic models which, in a closed manifold, have a non-degenerate gapped symmetric ground state describing the universal properties of SPT states. Examples of one and two …
We explicitly show that the Rokhsar-Kivelson dimer model on the triangular lattice is a liquid with topological order. Using the Pfaffian technique, we prove that the difference in local properties between the two topologically degenerate ground states on the cylinders and on the tori decreases exponentially with the system size. We compute the relevant correlation length and show that it equals the correlation length of the vison operator.
We revisit the phase diagram of Rokhsar-Kivelson models, which are used in fields such as superconductivity, frustrated magnetism, cold bosons, and the physics of Josephson junction arrays. From an extended height effective theory, we show that one of two simple generic phase diagrams contains a mixed phase that interpolates continuously between columnar and plaquette states. For the square lattice quantum dimer model we present evidence from exact diagonalization and Green's function Monte Carlo techniques that this scenario is realised, by combining an analysis of the excitation gaps of diff…
For any classical statistical-mechanics model with a discrete state space, and endowed with a dynamics satisfying detailed balance, it is possible to generalize the Rokhsar-Kivelson point for the quantum dimer model. That is, a quantum Hamiltonian can be constructed (on the same state space), such that the ground state wavefunction coincides with the classical equilibrium distribution. Furthermore the excited eigenstates correspond to classical relaxation modes, which (in cases with a symmetry or conserved quantity) permits extraction of the dispersion law of long-wavelength excitations. The m…
We obtain a quantum dimer model (QDM) containing a Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point expressed by spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a diamond-like decorated square lattice. This lattice has macroscopically degenerated nonmagnetic ground states, which are equivalent to the Hilbert space of a square-lattice QDM. Then, a square-lattice QDM containing the RK point as a second-order effective Hamiltonian is obtained by introducing further neighbor couplings as perturbation. Our model can provide a new method for the experimental realization of a resonating valence bond state in the QDM.
We show that the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point in quantum dimer models (QDM) can emerge in realistic quantum Ising spin systems. Specifically, we investigate the $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ transverse field Ising model on the triangular lattice with large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the multicritical point in the phase diagram corresponds to the RK point of the QDM on the honeycomb lattice. We further measure the spectral functions and identify three branches of quadratic dispersions. In the phase diagram, we also find a sequence of incommensurate states, which meet the microscopic…
There is a class of quantum Hamiltonians known as Rokhsar-Kivelson(RK)-Hamiltonians for which static ground state properties can be obtained by evaluating thermal expectation values for classical models. The ground state of an RK-Hamiltonian is known explicitly, and its dynamical properties can be obtained by performing a classical Monte Carlo simulation. We discuss the details of a Diffusion Monte Carlo method that is a good tool for studying statics and dynamics of perturbed RK-Hamiltonians without time discretization errors. As a general result we point out that the relation between the qua…
We construct a family of many-body wave functions to study the many-body localization phase transition. The wave functions have a Rokhsar-Kivelson form, in which the weight for the configurations are chosen from the Gibbs weights of a classical spin glass model, known as the Random Energy Model, multiplied by a random sign structure to represent a highly excited state. These wave functions show a phase transition into an MBL phase. In addition, we see three regimes of entanglement scaling with subsystem size: scaling with entanglement corresponding to an infinite temperature thermal phase, con…
A class of local SU(2)-invariant spin-1/2 Hamiltonians is studied that has ground states within the space of nearest neighbor valence bond states on the kagome lattice. Cases include "generalized Klein'' models without obvious non-valence bond ground states, as well as a "resonating-valence-bond" Hamiltonian whose unique ground states within the nearest neighbor valence bond space are four topologically degenerate "Sutherland-Rokhsar-Kivelson'' (SRK) type wavefunctions, which are expected to describe a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid. The proof of this uniqueness is intimately related to the…
We study the $n=2$ R\' enyi entanglement entropy of the triangular quantum dimer model via Monte Carlo sampling of Rokhsar-Kivelson(RK)-like ground state wavefunctions. Using the construction proposed by Kitaev and Preskill [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 110404 (2006)] and an adaptation of the Monte Carlo algorithm described by Hastings \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 157201 (2010)], we compute the topological entanglement entropy (TEE) at the RK point $γ= (1.001 \pm 0.003) \ln 2$ confirming earlier results. Additionally, we compute the TEE of the ground state of a generalized RK-like Hamiltonian …
We study a vast family of continuum Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) states, which have their groundstate encoded by a local quantum field theory. These describe certain quantum magnets, and are also important in quantum information. We prove the separability of the reduced density matrix of two disconnected subsystems, implying the absence of entanglement between the two subsystems -- a stronger statement than the vanishing of logarithmic negativity. As a particular instance, we investigate the case where the groundstate is described by a relativistic boson, which is relevant for certain magnets or Lifs…
We determine the dynamical dimer correlation functions of quantum dimer models at the Rokhsar-Kivelson point on the bipartite square and cubic lattices and the non-bipartite triangular lattice. Based on an algorithmic idea by Henley, we simulate a stochastic process of classical dimer configurations in continuous time and perform a stochastic analytical continuation to obtain the dynamical correlations in momentum space and the frequency domain. This approach allows us to observe directly the dispersion relations and the evolution of the spectral intensity within the Brillouin zone beyond the …
The covariance matrix spectrum of correlated charge insulators reveals hidden connections to Coupled Cluster, Matrix Product, and Rokhsar-Kivelson states
Quantum Hamiltonians that are fine-tuned to their so-called Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) points, first presented in the context of quantum dimer models, are defined by their representations in preferred bases in which their ground state wave functions are intimately related to the partition functions of combinatorial problems of classical statistical physics. We show that all the known examples of quantum Hamiltonians, when fine-tuned to their RK points, belong to a larger class of real, symmetric, and irreducible matrices that admit what we dub a Stochastic Matrix Form (SMF) decomposition. Matrices …
Loop condensed phases are scale-invariant quantum liquid phases of matter. These phases include topologically ordered liquid phases such as the toric code as well as critical liquids such as the Rokhsar-Kivelson point of the quantum dimer model on the square lattice. To investigate the extent to which nonlocal geometric observables capture a signature of the nonlocal quantum order present in these phases, we compute geometric properties of such loop condensed states using directed loop Monte Carlo calculations. In particular, we investigate the loop condensed nature of ground state of the squa…
These lecture notes aim to provide a self-contained, pedagogical introduction to the physics of local constraints, fractionalisation and topological liquids organised around the Rokhsar-Kivelson quantum dimer model. Topics and phenomena covered include emergent photons, SU(2) invariant spin liquids, valence-bond solids and Cantor deconfinement, along with an elementary introduction to the underlying theoretical models and methods.
We propose a new quantum model interpolating between the fully frustrated spin-1/2 Ising model in a transverse field and a dimer model. This model contains a resonating-valence-bond phase, including a line with an exactly solvable ground state of the Rokhsar-Kivelson type. We discuss the phase diagrams of this model on the square and triangular (in terms of the dimer representation) lattices.
We study vison excitations in a quantum dimer model interpolating between the Rokhsar-Kivelson models on the square and triangular lattices. In the square-lattice case, the model is known to be critical and characterized by U(1) topological quantum numbers. Introducing diagonal dimers brings the model to a Z_2 resonating-valence-bond phase. We study variationally the emergence of vison excitations at low concentration of diagonal dimers, close to the critical point. We find that, in this regime, vison excitations are large in size and their structure resembles vortices in type-II superconducto…
We introduce a quantum dimer model on the kagome lattice with kinetic terms allowing from 3 to 6 dimers to resonate around hexagons. Unlike models studied previously, the different resonance loops appears with different signs (given by the parity of the number of dimers involved). These signs naturally appear when performing the lowest-order overlap expansion (Rokhsar and Kivelson 1988) of the Heisenberg model. We demonstrate that the quantum dimer model has an extensive zero-temperature entropy and has very short-range dimer-dimer correlations. We discuss the possible relevance of this new ki…
We present a certain class of two-dimensional frustrated quantum Heisenberg spin systems with multiple ring exchange interactions which are rigorously demonstrated to have quantum disordered ground states without magnetic long-range order. The systems considered in this paper are s=1/2 antiferromagnets on a honeycomb and square lattices, and an s=1 antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice. We find that for a particular set of parameter values, the ground state is a short-range resonating valence bond state or a valence bond crystal state. It is shown that these systems are closely related to th…
We extend the quantum dimer model (QDM) introduced by Rokhsar and Kivelson so as to construct a concrete example of the model which exhibits the first-order phase transition between different valence-bond solids suggested recently by Batista and Trugman and look for the possibility of other exotic dimer states. We show that our model contains three exotic valence-bond phases (herringbone, checkerboard and dimer smectic) in the ground-state phase diagram and that it realizes the phase transition from the staggered valence-bond solid to the herringbone one. The checkerboard phase has four-fold r…
Aiming to describe frustrated quantum magnets with non-magnetic singlet ground states, we have extended the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) loop-expansion to derive a generalized Quantum Dimer Model containing only connected terms up to arbitrary order. For the square lattice frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet (J1-J2-J3 model), an expansion up to 8th order shows that the leading correction to the original RK model comes from dimer moves on length-6 loops. This model free of the original sign problem is treated by advanced numerical techniques. The results suggest that a rotationally anisotropic plaqu…
We introduce a quantum dimer model on the hexagonal lattice that, in addition to the standard three-dimer kinetic and potential terms, includes a competing potential part counting dimer-free hexagons. The zero-temperature phase diagram is studied by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, supplemented by variational arguments. It reveals some new crystalline phases and a cascade of transitions with rapidly changing flux (tilt in the height language). We analyze perturbatively the vicinity of the Rokhsar-Kivelson point, showing that this model has the microscopic ingredients needed for the "d…
We show that the liquid-to-crystal quantum phase transition in the Rokhsar--Kivelson dimer model on the two-dimensional triangular lattice occurs as a condensation of vortex-like excitations called ``visons''. This conclusion is drawn from the numerical studies of the vison spectrum in the liquid phase by using the Green's function Monte Carlo method. We find that visons remain the lowest excitation throughout the liquid phase and that their gap decreases continuously to zero at the phase transition. The nature of the crystal phase and the second order of the phase transition are in agreement …
Using exact diagonalizations and Green's function Monte Carlo simulations, we have studied the zero-temperature properties of the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice on clusters with up to 588 sites. A detailed comparison of the properties in different topological sectors as a function of the cluster size and for different cluster shapes has allowed us to identify different phases, to show explicitly the presence of topological degeneracy in a phase close to the Rokhsar-Kivelson point, and to understand finite-size effects inside this phase. The nature of the various phases has been …
The plaquette phase of the square lattice quantum dimer model is studied using a continuous-time reptation quantum Monte Carlo method for lattices of sizes up to 48x48 sites. We determine the location of the phase transition between the columnar and plaquette phases to occur at V_c/J=0.60 +- 0.05 which is significantly larger than inferred from previous exact diagonalization studies on smaller lattices. Offdiagonal correlation functions are obtained. They exhibit long-range order in the plaquette phase but not at the Rokhsar-Kivelson point. We also observe significant finite-size corrections t…
We construct a generalized quantum dimer model on two-dimensional nonbipartite lattices including the triangular lattice, the star lattice and the kagome lattice. At the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point, we obtain its exact ground states that are shown to be a fully gapped quantum spin liquid with the double-semion topological order. The ground-state wave function of such a model at the RK point is a superposition of dimer configurations with a nonlocal sign structure determined by counting the number of loops in the transition graph. We explicitly demonstrate the double-semion topological order in…
We extend Quantum Dimer Model (QDM) introduced by Rokhsar and Kivelson in such a way that the model includes resonance processes on larger loops. The strategy is to first construct a pseudo spin Hamiltonian which is defined not by the S =1/2 but by the S=1 representation and then establish the correspondence between the pseudo-spin-1 configurations and those of dimers. The standard QDM keeps only the lowest resonance processes for pairs of parallel dimers and its validity in describing the realistic spin systems is not obvious. Our extended QDM (EQDM) improves this point and contains a novel r…
We consider a family of SU(2)-symmetric Projected Entangled Paired States (PEPS) on the square lattice, defining colored-Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) states, to describe the quantum disordered phase of the $J_1-J_2$ frustrated Heisenberg model. For $J_2/J_1\sim 0.55$ we show the emergence of critical (algebraic) dimer-dimer correlations -- typical of Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) points of quantum dimer models on bipartite lattices -- while, simultaneously, the spin-spin correlation length remains short. Our findings are consistent with a spin liquid or a weak Valence Bond Crystal in the neighborhood …
We study a model of close-packed dimers on the square lattice with a nearest neighbor interaction between parallel dimers. This model corresponds to the classical limit of quantum dimer models [D.S. Rokhsar and S.A. Kivelson, Phys. Rev. Lett.{\bf 61}, 2376 (1988)]. By means of Monte Carlo and Transfer Matrix calculations, we show that this system undergoes a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition separating a low temperature ordered phase where dimers are aligned in columns from a high temperature critical phase with continuously varying exponents. This is understood by constructing the corresponding …
Starting from the mean-field solution of a spin-orbital model of LiNiO$_2$, we derive an effective quantum dimer model (QDM) that lives on the triangular lattice and contains kinetic terms acting on 4-site plaquettes and 6-site loops. Using numerical exact diagonalizations and Green's function Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the competition between these kinetic terms leads to a resonating valence bond (RVB) state for a finite range of parameters. We also show that this RVB phase is connected to the RVB phase identified in the Rokhsar-Kivelson model on the same lattice in the context of …
A family of models is proposed to describe the motion of holes in a fluctuating quantum dimer background on the square lattice. Following Castelnovo et al. [Ann. Phys. (NY) 318, 316 (2005)], a generalized Rokhsar-Kivelson Hamiltonian at **finite doping** which can be mapped on a **doped** interacting classical dimer model is constructed. A simple physical extension of this model is also considered. Using numerical computations and simple considerations based on the above exact mapping, we determine the phase diagram of the model showing a number of quantum phases typical of a doped Mott insula…
The singlet dynamics which plays a major role in the physics of the spin-1/2 Quantum Heisenberg Antiferromagnet (QHAF) on the Kagome lattice can be approximately described by projecting onto the nearest-neighbor valence bond (NNVB) singlet subspace. We re-visit here the effective Quantum Dimer Model which originates from the latter NNVB-projected Heisenberg model via a non-perturbative Rokhsar-Kivelson-like scheme. By using Lanczos exact diagonalisation on a 108-site cluster supplemented by a careful symmetry analysis, it is shown that a previously-found 36-site Valence Bond Crystal (VBC) in f…
The quantum dimer model on the square lattice is equivalent to a $U(1)$ gauge theory. Quantum Monte Carlo calculations reveal that, for values of the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) coupling $λ< 1$, the theory exists in a confining columnar phase. The interfaces separating distinct columnar phases display plaquette order, which, however, is not realized as a bulk phase. Static "electric" charges are confined by flux tubes that consist of multiple strands, each carrying a fractionalized flux $\frac{1}{4}$. A soft pseudo-Goldstone mode emerges around $λ\approx 0$, long before one reaches the RK point at $…
We consider the spin-1/2 hamiltonians proposed by Cano and Fendley [J. Cano and P. Fendley, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 067205 (2010)] which were built to promote the well-known Rokshar-Kivelson (RK) point of quantum dimer models to spin-1/2 wavefunctions. We first show that these models, besides the exact degeneracy of RK point, support gapless spinless excitations as well as a spin gap in the thermodynamic limit, signatures of an unusual spin liquid. We then extend the original construction to create a continuous family of SU(2) invariant spin models that reproduces the phase diagram of the quantu…
Systems of strongly correlated fermions on certain geometrically frustrated lattices at particular filling factors support excitations with fractional charges $\pm e/2$. We calculate quantum mechanical ground states, low--lying excitations and spectral functions of finite lattices by means of numerical diagonalization. The ground state of the most thoroughfully studied case, the criss-crossed checkerboard lattice, is degenerate and shows long--range order. Static fractional charges are confined by a weak linear force, most probably leading to bound states of large spatial extent. Consequently,…
We construct a quantum extension of the (classical) three-coloring model introduced by Baxter [J.Math.Phys.11, 784 (1970)] for which the ground state can be computed exactly along a continuous line of Rokhsar-Kivelson solvable points. The quantum model, which admits a local spin representation, displays at least three different phases; an antiferromagnetic (AF) phase, a line of quantum critical points, and a ferromagnetic (F) phase. We argue that, in the ferromagnetic phase, the system cannot reach dynamically the quantum ground state when coupled to a bath through local interactions, and thus…
A highly efficient and simple to implement Monte Carlo algorithm is proposed for the evaluation of the Renyi entanglement entropy(REE) of quantum dimer model(QDM) at the Rokhsar-Kivelson(R-K) point. It makes possible the evaluation of REE at the R-K point to the thermodynamic limit for a general QDM. We apply the algorithm to QDM on both triangular and square lattice as demonstrations and find the REE on both lattices follow perfect linear scaling in the thermodynamic limit, apart from an even-odd oscillation in the latter case. We also evaluate the topological entanglement entropy(TEE) on bot…
We propose a height-conserving quantum dimer model (hQDM) such that the lattice sum of its associated height field is conserved, and that it admits a Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point. The hQDM with minimal interaction range on the square lattice exhibits Hilbert space fragmentation and maps exactly to the XXZ spin model on the square lattice in certain Krylov subspaces. We obtain the ground-state phase diagram of hQDM via quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and demonstrate that a large portion of it is within the Krylov subspaces which admit the exact mapping to the XXZ model, with dimer ordered phase…
We present a quantum Monte Carlo investigation of the finite-temperature phase diagram of the quantum dimer model on the square lattice. We use the sweeping cluster algorithm, which allows to implement exactly the dimer constraint, supplemented with a equal-time directed loop move that allows to sample winding sectors. We find a high-temperature critical phase with power-law correlations that extend down to the Rokshar-Kivelson point, in the vicinity of which a re-entrance effect in the lines of constant exponent is found. For small values of the kinetic energy strength, we find finite-tempera…
Employing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the extended $XXZ$ model on the kagome lattice. A $\mathbb Z_2$ quantum spin liquid phase with effective even Ising gauge field structure emerges from the delicate balance among three symmetry-breaking phases including stripe solid, staggered solid and ferromagnet. This $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid is stabilized by an extended interaction related to the Rokhsar-Kivelson potential in the quantum dimer model limit. The phase transitions from the staggered solid to a spin liquid or ferromagnet are found to be first order and so is the …
We consider fermionic fully-packed loop and quantum dimer models which serve as effective low-energy models for strongly correlated fermions on a checkerboard lattice at half and quarter filling, respectively. We identify a large number of fluctuationless states specific to each case, due to the fermionic statistics. We discuss the symmetries and conserved quantities of the system and show that for a class of fluctuating states in the half-filling case, the fermionic sign problem can be gauged away. This claim is supported by numerical evaluation of the low-lying states and can be understood b…
A continuous-time formulation of the Diffusion Monte Carlo method for lattice models is presented. In its simplest version, without the explicit use of trial wavefunctions for importance sampling, the method is an excellent tool for investigating quantum lattice models in parameter regions close to generalized Rokhsar-Kivelson points. This is illustrated by showing results for the quantum dimer model on both triangular and square lattices. The potential energy of two test monomers as a function of their separation is computed at zero temperature. The existence of deconfined monomers in the tri…
We present a model of classical hard-core dimers on the square lattice that contains an Ising nematic phase in its phase diagram. We consider a model with an attractive interaction for parallel dimers on a given plaquette of the square lattice and an attractive interaction for neighboring parallel dimers on the same row ({\it viz} column) of the lattice. By extensive Monte carlo simulations we find that with a finite density of holes the phase diagram has, with rising temperatures, a columnar crystalline phase, an Ising nematic liquid phase and a disordered fluid phase, separated by Ising cont…
We consider dimers on the star lattice (aka the 3-12, Fisher, expanded kagome or triangle-honeycomb lattice). We show that dimer coverings on this lattice have Z_2 arrow and pseudo-spin representations analogous to those for the kagome lattice, and use these to construct an exactly solvable quantum dimer model (QDM) with a Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) ground state. This QDM, first discussed by Moessner and Sondhi from a different point of view, is the star-lattice analogue of a kagome-lattice QDM analyzed by Misguich et al. We give a detailed analysis of various properties of the classical equal-weig…
We derive exact results for close-packed dimers on the triangular kagome lattice (TKL), formed by inserting triangles into the triangles of the kagome lattice. Because the TKL is a non-bipartite lattice, dimer-dimer correlations are short-ranged, so that the ground state at the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point of the corresponding quantum dimer model on the same lattice is a short-ranged spin liquid. Using the Pfaffian method, we derive an exact form for the free energy, and we find that the entropy is 1/3 ln2 per site, regardless of the weights of the bonds. The occupation probability of every bon…
We present detailed analytic calculations of finite-volume energy spectra, mean field theory, as well as a systematic low-energy effective field theory for the square lattice quantum dimer model. The analytic considerations explain why a string connecting two external static charges in the confining columnar phase fractionalizes into eight distinct strands with electric flux $\frac{1}{4}$. An emergent approximate spontaneously broken $SO(2)$ symmetry gives rise to a pseudo-Goldstone boson. Remarkably, this soft phonon-like excitation, which is massless at the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point, exist…
We study the entanglement properties of a quantum lattice-gas model for which we can find the exact ground state (of the Rokhsar-Kivelson type). The ground state can be expressed as a superposition of states, each of which is characterized by a particle configuration with nearest-neighbor exclusion. We show that the reduced density matrix of the model on a ladder is intimately related to the transfer matrix of the classical hard-square model. The entanglement spectra of the model on square and triangular ladders are critical when parameters are chosen so that the corresponding classical hard-s…
Quantum dimer models are believed to capture the essential physics of antiferromagnetic phases dominated by short-ranged valence bond configurations. We show that these models arise as particular limits of Ising (Z_2) gauge theories, but that in these limits the system develops a larger local U(1) invariance that has different consequences on different lattices. Conversely, we note that the standard Z_2 gauge theory is a generalised quantum dimer model, in which the particular relaxation of the hardcore constraint for the dimers breaks the U(1) down to Z_2. These mappings indicate that at leas…
The nature and the very existence of the resonant plaquette valence bond state that separates the classical columnar phase and the Rokhsar and Kivelson point in the quantum dimer model remains unsettled. Here we take a different line of attack on this model, and on the closely related six vertex model, by exploiting the global conservation law of the number of electric field lines. This allows us to study a single fluctuating electric field line which we show maps exactly onto a one dimensional spin chain. In the case of the six vertex model, the electric field line maps onto the celebrated sp…

The role of magnetic and electric perturbations to the quantum Lifshitz model in 2+1 dimensions are examined in this paper. The quantum Lifshitz model is an effective field theory for quantum multicritical systems, that include generalized 2D quantum dimer models in bipartite lattices and their generalizations. It describes a class of quantum phase transitions between ordered and topological phases in 2+1 dimensions. Magnetic perturbations break the dimer conservation law. Electric excitations, whose condensation lead to ordered phases, have been studied extensively both in the classical 3D mo…
We study a general class of easy-axis spin models on a lattice of corner sharing even-sided polygons with all-to-all interactions within a plaquette. The low energy description corresponds to a quantum dimer model on a dual lattice of even coordination number with a multi dimer constraint. At an appropriately constructed frustration-free Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point, the ground state wavefunction can be exactly mapped onto a classical vertex model on the dual lattice. When the dual lattice is bipartite, the vertex models are bonded and are self dual under Wegner's duality, with the self dual po…

We show that there are two types of RVB liquid phases present in three-dimensional quantum dimer models, corresponding to the deconfining phases of U(1) and Z_2 gauge theories in d=3+1. The former is found on the bipartite cubic lattice and is the generalization of the critical point in the square lattice quantum dimer model found originally by Rokhsar and Kivelson. The latter exists on the non-bipartite face-centred cubic lattice and generalizes the RVB phase found earlier by us on the triangular lattice. We discuss the excitation spectrum and the nature of the ordering in both cases. Both ph…
