We introduce and study a class of exchangeable random graph ensembles. They can be used as statistical null models for empirical networks, and as a tool for theoretical investigations. We provide general theorems that carachterize the degree distribution of the ensemble graphs, together with some features that are important for applications, such as subgraph distributions and kernel of the adjacency matrix. These results are used to compare to other models of simple and complex networks. A particular case of directed networks with power-law out--degree is studied in more detail, as an example of the flexibility of the model in applications.
Let $(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ be an exchangeable random vector with distribution function $F$, and denote by $Y_1\leq \cdots\leq Y_n$ the corresponding order statistics. We show that the conditional distribution of $(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ given $(Y_1,\ldots,Y_n)$ does not depend on $F$.
Gibbs-type exchangeable random partitions, which is a class of multiplicative measures on the set of positive integer partitions, appear in various contexts, including Bayesian statistics, random combinatorial structures, and stochastic models of diversity in various phenomena. Some distributional results on ordered sizes in the Gibbs partition are established by introducing associated partial Bell polynomials and analysis of the generating functions. The combinatorial approach is applied to derive explicit results on asymptotic behavior of the extreme sizes in the Gibbs partition. Especially,…
In this work we analyze the concept of swap-invariance, which is a weaker variant of exchangeability. A random vector $ξ$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is called swap-invariant if $\,{\mathbf E}\,\big| \!\sum_j u_j ξ_j \big|\,$ is invariant under all permutations of $(ξ_1, \ldots, ξ_n)$ for each $u \in \mathbb{R}^n$. We extend this notion to random measures. For a swap-invariant random measure $ξ$ on a measure space $(S,\mathcal{S},μ)$ the vector $(ξ(A_1), \ldots, ξ(A_n))$ is swap-invariant for all disjoint $A_j \in \mathcal{S}$ with equal $μ$-measure. Various characterizations of swap-invariant random me…
We derive in this short report the exponential as well as power decreasing tail estimations for the sums of centered exchangeable random variables, alike ones for the sums of the centered independent ones.
We consider shifts $Π_{n,m}$ of a partially exchangeable random partition $Π_\infty$ of $\mathbb{N}$ obtained by restricting $Π_\infty$ to $\{n+1,n+2,\dots, n+m\}$ and then subtracting $n$ from each element to get a partition of $[m]:= \{1, \ldots, m \}$. We show that for each fixed $m$ the distribution of $Π_{n,m}$ converges to the distribution of the restriction to $[m]$ of the exchangeable random partition of $\mathbb{N}$ with the same ranked frequencies as $Π_\infty$. As a consequence, the partially exchangeable random partition $Π_\infty$ is exchangeable if and only if $Π_\infty$ is stati…
We study the independence structure of finitely exchangeable distributions over random vectors and random networks. In particular, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for an exchangeable vector so that its elements are completely independent or completely dependent. We also provide a sufficient condition for an exchangeable vector so that its elements are marginally independent. We then generalize these results and conditions for exchangeable random networks. In this case, it is demonstrated that the situation is more complex. We show that the independence structure of exchangeable …
This note attempts to understand graph limits as defined by Lovasz and Szegedy (2006)} in terms of harmonic analysis on semigroups. This is done by representing probability distributions of random exchangeable graphs as mixtures of characters on the semigroup of unlabeled graphs with node-disjoint union, thereby providing an alternative derivation of de Finetti's theorem for random exchangeable graphs.
We develop a theory of limits of finite posets in close analogy to the recent theory of graph limits. In particular, we study representations of the limits by functions of two variables on a probability space, and connections to exchangeable random infinite posets.
A central limit theorem for arrays of symmetric row-wise exchangeable random variables is presented. The result is valid for finite and infinite extendable and non-extendable sequences. Unlike most reported versions of the central limit theorem valid only for partial sums of finite non-extendable sequences, ours applies to the entire sum and mimics the classical theorem in this sense.
Kallenberg (2005) provided a necessary and sufficient condition for the local finiteness of a jointly exchangeable random measure on $\R_+^2$. Here we note an additional condition that was missing in Kallenberg's theorem, but was implicitly used in the proof. We also provide a counter-example when the additional condition does not hold.
Based on previous work of Paul Ressel and myself, I show that the space of all "continuous" exchangeable probability measures on a certain set of order processes is a Bauer simplex.
We develop a clear connection between deFinetti's theorem for exchangeable arrays (work of Aldous--Hoover--Kallenberg) and the emerging area of graph limits (work of Lovasz and many coauthors). Along the way, we translate the graph theory into more classical probability.
We introduce the notion of a restricted exchangeable partition of $\mathbb{N}$. We obtain integral representations, consider associated fragmentations, embeddings into continuum random trees and convergence to such limit trees. In particular, we deduce from the general theory developed here a limit result conjectured previously for Ford's alpha model and its extension, the alpha-gamma model, where restricted exchangeability arises naturally.
An exchangeable random matrix is a random matrix with distribution invariant under any permutation of the entries. For such random matrices, we show, as the dimension tends to infinity, that the empirical spectral distribution tends to the uniform law on the unit disc. This is an instance of the universality phenomenon known as the circular law, for a model of random matrices with dependent entries, rows, and columns. It is also a non-Hermitian counterpart of a result of Chatterjee on the semi-circular law for random Hermitian matrices with exchangeable entries. The proof relies in particular …
We obtain the analogue of the classical result by Erdös and Kac on the limiting distribution of the maximum of partial sums for exchangeable random variables with zero mean and variance one. We show that, if the conditions of the central limit theorem of Blum et al. hold, the limit coincides with the classical one. Under more general assumptions, the probability of the random variables having conditional negative drift appears in the limiting distribution.
The hitting partitions are random partitions that arise from the investigation of so-called hitting scenarios of max-infinitely-divisible (max-i.d.)~distributions. We study a class of max-i.d.~laws with exchangeable hitting partitions obtained by size-biased sampling from the jumps of a Lévy subordinator. We obtain explicit formulae for the distributions of these partitions in the case of the multivariate $α$-logistic and another family of exchangeable max-i.d.\ distributions. Specifically, the hitting partitions for these two cases are shown to coincide with the well-known Poisson--Dirichlet …
Let A be a standard Borel space, and consider the space A^{\bbN^{(k)}} of A-valued arrays indexed by all size-k subsets of \bbN. This paper concerns random measures on such a space whose laws are invariant under the natural action of permutations of \bbN. The main result is a representation theorem for such `exchangeable' random measures, obtained using the classical representation theorems for exchangeable arrays due to de Finetti, Hoover, Aldous and Kallenberg. After proving this representation, two applications of exchangeable random measures are given. The first is a short new proof of the…
In a recent paper by the authors, a new approach--called the "embedding method"--was introduced, which allows to make use of exchangeable pairs for normal and multivariate normal approximation with Stein's method in cases where the corresponding couplings do not satisfy a certain linearity condition. The key idea is to embed the problem into a higher dimensional space in such a way that the linearity condition is then satisfied. Here we apply the embedding to U-statistics as well as to subgraph counts in random graphs.
We propose a path transformation which applied to a cyclically exchangeable increment process conditions its minimum to belong to a given interval. This path transformation is then applied to processes with start and end at zero. It is seen that, under simple conditions, the weak limit as epsilon tends to zero of the process conditioned on remaining above minus epsilon exists and has the law of the Vervaat transformation of the process. We examine the consequences of this path transformation on processes with exchangeable increments, Lévy bridges, and the Brownian bridge.
We study a recent model for edge exchangeable random graphs introduced by Crane and Dempsey; in particular we study asymptotic properties of the random simple graph obtained by merging multiple edges. We study a number of examples, and show that the model can produce dense, sparse and extremely sparse random graphs. One example yields a power-law degree distribution. We give some examples where the random graph is dense and converges a.s. in the sense of graph limit theory, but also an example where a.s. every graph limit is the limit of some subsequence. Another example is sparse and yields c…
In this note, we show that the norm of an $n\times n$ random jointly exchangeable matrix with zero diagonal can be estimated in terms of the norm of its $n/2\times n/2$ submatrix located in the top right corner. As a consequence, we prove a relation between the second largest singular values of a random matrix with constant row and column sums and its top right $n/2\times n/2$ submatrix. The result has an application to estimating the spectral gap of random undirected $d$-regular graphs in terms of the second singular value of {\it directed} random graphs with predefined degree sequences.
We develop constructions for exchangeable sequences of point processes that are rendered conditionally-i.i.d. negative binomial processes by a (possibly unknown) random measure called the base measure. Negative binomial processes are useful in Bayesian nonparametrics as models for random multisets, and in applications we are often interested in cases when the base measure itself is difficult to construct (for example when it has countably infinite support). While a finitary construction for an important case (corresponding to a beta process base measure) has appeared in the literature, our con…
Let $K_n$ denote the number of distinct values among the first $n$ terms of an infinite exchangeable sequence of random variables $(X_1,X_2,\ldots)$. We prove for $n=3$ that the extreme points of the convex set of all possible laws of $K_3$ are those derived from i.i.d. sampling from discrete uniform distributions and the limit case with $P(K_3=3)=1$, and offer a conjecture for larger $n$. We also consider variants of the problem for finite exchangeable sequences and exchangeable random partitions.
We consider ensembles of real symmetric band matrices with entries drawn from an infinite sequence of exchangeable random variables, as far as the symmetry of the matrices permits. In general the entries of the upper triangular parts of these matrices are correlated and no smallness or sparseness of these correlations is assumed. It is shown that the eigenvalue distribution measures still converge to a semicircle but with random scaling. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of the corresponding $\ell_2$-operator norms. The key to our analysis is a generalisation of a classic result by d…

Gibbs-type random probability measures and the exchangeable random partitions they induce represent an important framework both from a theoretical and applied point of view. In the present paper, motivated by species sampling problems, we investigate some properties concerning the conditional distribution of the number of blocks with a certain frequency generated by Gibbs-type random partitions. The general results are then specialized to three noteworthy examples yielding completely explicit expressions of their distributions, moments and asymptotic behaviors. Such expressions can be interpre…
We consider a process of noncolliding $q$-exchangeable random walks on $\mathbb{Z}$ making steps $0$ (straight) and $-1$ (down). A single random walk is called $q$-exchangeable if under an elementary transposition of the neighboring steps (down, straight) $\to$ (straight, down) the probability of the trajectory is multiplied by a parameter $q\in(0,1)$. Our process of $m$ noncolliding $q$-exchangeable random walks is obtained from the independent $q$-exchangeable walks via the Doob's $h$-transform for a certain nonnegative eigenfunction $h$ with the eigenvalue less than $1$. The system of $m$ w…

For a class of random partitions of an infinite set a de Finetti-type representation is derived, and in one special case a central limit theorem for the number of blocks is shown.
Motivated by the problem of designing inference-friendly Bayesian nonparametric models in probabilistic programming languages, we introduce a general class of partially exchangeable random arrays which generalizes the notion of hierarchical exchangeability introduced in Austin and Panchenko (2014). We say that our partially exchangeable arrays are DAG-exchangeable since their partially exchangeable structure is governed by a collection of Directed Acyclic Graphs. More specifically, such a random array is indexed by $\mathbb{N}^{|V|}$ for some DAG $G=(V,E)$, and its exchangeability structure is…
Suppose $Π$ is an exchangeable random partition of the positive integers and $Π_n$ is its restriction to $\{1, ..., n\}$. Let $K_n$ denote the number of blocks of $Π_n$, and let $K_{n,r}$ denote the number of blocks of $Π_n$ containing $r$ integers. We show that if $0 < α< 1$ and $K_n/(n^α \ell(n))$ converges in probability to $Γ(1-α)$, where $\ell$ is a slowly varying function, then $K_{n,r}/(n^α \ell(n))$ converges in probability to $αΓ(r - α)/r!$. This result was previously known when the convergence of $K_n/(n^α \ell(n))$ holds almost surely, but the result under the hypothesis of converge…
We prove a long-standing conjecture which characterises the Ewens-Pitman two-parameter family of exchangeable random partitions, plus a short list of limit and exceptional cases, by the following property: for each $n = 2,3, >...$, if one of $n$ individuals is chosen uniformly at random, independently of the random partition $π_n$ of these individuals into various types, and all individuals of the same type as the chosen individual are deleted, then for each $r > 0$, given that $r$ individuals remain, these individuals are partitioned according to $π_r'$ for some sequence of random partitions …
Consider a population of individuals belonging to an infinity number of types, and assume that type proportions follow the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet distribution. A sample of size n is selected from the population. The total number of different types and the number of types appearing in the sample with a fixed frequency are important statistics. In this paper we establish the moderate deviation principles for these quantities. The corresponding rate functions are explicitly identified, which help revealing a critical scale and understanding the exact role of the parameters. Conditional, …
This paper derives exponential concentration inequalities and polynomial moment inequalities for the spectral norm of a random matrix. The analysis requires a matrix extension of the scalar concentration theory developed by Sourav Chatterjee using Stein's method of exchangeable pairs. When applied to a sum of independent random matrices, this approach yields matrix generalizations of the classical inequalities due to Hoeffding, Bernstein, Khintchine and Rosenthal. The same technique delivers bounds for sums of dependent random matrices and more general matrix-valued functions of dependent rand…
The problem of convergence in law of normed sums of exchangeable random variables is examined. First, the problem is studied w.r.t. arrays of exchangeable random variables, and the special role played by mixtures of products of stable laws - as limits in law of normed sums in different rows of the array - is emphasized. Necessary and sufficient conditions for convergence to a specific form in the above class of measures are then given. Moreover, sufficient conditions for convergence of sums in a single row are proved. Finally, a potentially useful variant of the formulation of the results just…
A hierarchy on a set $S$, also called a total partition of $S$, is a collection $\mathcal{H}$ of subsets of $S$ such that $S \in \mathcal{H}$, each singleton subset of $S$ belongs to $\mathcal{H}$, and if $A, B \in \mathcal{H}$ then $A \cap B$ equals either $A$ or $B$ or $\varnothing$. Every exchangeable random hierarchy of positive integers has the same distribution as a random hierarchy $\mathcal{H}$ associated as follows with a random real tree $\mathcal{T}$ equipped with root element $0$ and a random probability distribution $p$ on the Borel subsets of $\mathcal{T}$: given $(\mathcal{T},p)…
We present results concerning when the joint distribution of an exchangeable sequence is determined by the marginal distributions of its partial sums. The question of whether or not this determination occurs was posed by David Aldous. We then consider related uniqueness problems, including a continuous time analog to the Aldous problem and a randomized univariate moment problem.
Kingman derived the Ewens sampling formula for random partitions from the genealogy model defined by a Poisson process of mutations along lines of descent governed by a simple coalescent process. Möhle described the recursion which determines the generalization of the Ewens sampling formula when the lines of descent are governed by a coalescent with multiple collisions. In a recent work by Dong, Gnedin and Pitman, authors exploit an analogy with the theory of regenerative composition and partition structures, and provide various characterizations of the associated exchangeable random partition…
We study random relational structures that are \emph{relatively exchangeable}---that is, whose distributions are invariant under the automorphisms of a reference structure $\mathfrak{M}$. When $\mathfrak{M}$ has {\em trivial definable closure}, every relatively exchangeable structure satisfies a general Aldous--Hoover-type representation. If $\mathfrak{M}$ satisfies the stronger properties of {\em ultrahomogeneity} and {\em $n$-disjoint amalgamation property} ($n$-DAP) for every $n\geq1$, then relatively exchangeable structures have a more precise description whereby each component depends loc…
Let $S$ be a Polish space and $(X_n:n\geq1)$ an exchangeable sequence of $S$-valued random variables. Let $α_n(\cdot)=P(X_{n+1}\in \cdot\mid X_1,\...,X_n)$ be the predictive measure and $α$ a random probability measure on $S$ such that $α_n\stackrel{\mathrm{weak}}{\longrightarrow}α$ a.s. Two (related) problems are addressed. One is to give conditions for $α\llλ$ a.s., where $λ$ is a (nonrandom) $σ$-finite Borel measure on $S$. Such conditions should concern the finite dimensional distributions $\mathcal {L}(X_1,\...,X_n)$, $n\geq1$, only. The other problem is to investigate whether $\Vert\alp …
We combine the method of exchangeable pairs with Stein's method for functional approximation. As a result, we give a general linearity condition under which an abstract Gaussian approximation theorem for stochastic processes holds. We apply this approach to estimate the distance of a sum of random variables, chosen from an array according to a random permutation, from a Gaussian mixture process. This result lets us prove a functional combinatorial central limit theorem. We also consider a graph-valued process and bound the speed of convergence of the distribution of its rescaled edge counts to…
A length-$n$ random sequence $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ in a space $S$ is finitely exchangeable if its distribution is invariant under all $n!$ permutations of coordinates. Given $N > n$, we study the extendibility problem: when is it the case that there is a length-$N$ exchangeable random sequence $Y_1,\ldots, Y_N$ so that $(Y_1,\ldots,Y_n)$ has the same distribution as $(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$? In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition so that, for given $n$ and $N$, the extendibility problem admits a solution. This is done by employing functional-analytic and measure-theoretic arguments t…
Specify a randomized algorithm that, given a very large graph or network, extracts a random subgraph. What can we learn about the input graph from a single subsample? We derive laws of large numbers for the sampler output, by relating randomized subsampling to distributional invariance: Assuming an invariance holds is tantamount to assuming the sample has been generated by a specific algorithm. That in turn yields a notion of ergodicity. Sampling algorithms induce model classes---graphon models, sparse generalizations of exchangeable graphs, and random multigraphs with exchangeable edges can a…
We consider a random bistochastic matrix of size $n$ of the form $M Q$ where $M$ is a uniformly distributed permutation matrix and $Q$ is a given bistochastic matrix. Under mild sparsity and regularity assumptions on $Q$, we prove that the second largest eigenvalue of $MQ$ is essentially bounded by the normalized Hilbert-Schmidt norm of $Q$ when $n$ grows large. We apply this result to random walks on random regular digraphs and to shuffle-and-fold maps of the unit interval popularized in fluid mixing protocols.
