Ion mixtures require an exclusion core to avoid collapse. The Debye Hueckel theory, where ions are point charges, is accurate only in the limit of infinite dilution. The MSA is the embedding of hard cores into DH, is valid for higher densities. In the MSA the properties of any ionic mixture can be represented by a single screening parameter $Γ$. For equal ionic size restricted model is obtained from the Debye parameter $κ$. This one parameter representation (BIMSA) is valid for complex and associating systems, such as the general n-polyelectrolytes. The BIMSA is the only theory that satisfies the infinite dilution limit of the DH theory for any chain length. The contact pair distribution function of hard ions mixture is a functional of $Γ$ and a small mean field parameter. This yields good agreement with the Monte Carlo (Bresme et al. Phys. Rev. E {\textbf 51} 289 (1995)) .
We report a mechanism which can lead to long range attractions between like-charged spherical macroions, stemming from the existence of metastable ionized states. We show that the ground state of a single highly charged colloid plus a few excess counterions is overcharged. For the case of two highly charged macroions in their neutralizing divalent counterion solution we demonstrate that, in the regime of strong Coulomb coupling, the counterion clouds are very likely to be unevenly distributed, leading to one overcharged and one undercharged macroion. This long-living metastable configuration i…
By using the Debye screened potential a generalized version of Newton's Shell Theorem is developed and analytical equations are derived to calculate i) the potential of a charged sphere surrounded by electrolyte, ii) the potential of two concentric charged spheres surrounded by electrolyte, and iii) the membrane potential of a charged lipid vesicle surrounded by electrolyte with high ion concentration. By numerical integration the potential of a lipid vesicle is calculated at any electrolyte concentration.
By using the recently generalized version of Newton Shell Theorem [3] analytical equations are derived to calculate the electric interaction energy between two charged spheres, a small one is located within a larger one, and each sphere is surrounded outside and inside by electrolyte. This electric interaction energy is calculated as a function of the electrolyte ion concentration, temperature, distance between the centers and size of the spheres. At the same distance between the centers of the spheres the absolute value of the interaction energy decreases with increasing electrolyte ion conce…
The glass transition is investigated in three dimensions for single and double Yukawa potentials for the full range of control parameters. For vanishing screening parameter, the limit of the one-component plasma is obtained; for large screening parameters and high coupling strengths, the glass-transition properties crossover to the hard-sphere system. Between the two limits, the entire transition diagram can be described by analytical functions. Different from other potentials, the glass-transition and melting lines for Yukawa potentials are found to follow shifted but otherwise identical curv…
By using the recently generalized version of Newton Shell Theorem analytical equations are derived to calculate the electric interaction energy between two separated charged spheres surrounded outside and inside by electrolyte. This electric interaction energy is calculated as a function of the electrolyte ion concentration, temperature, distance between the spheres and size of the spheres. At the same distance between the spheres the absolute value of the interaction energy decreases with increasing electrolyte ion concentration and increases with increasing temperature. At zero electrolyte i…
We simulate model systems of charged spherical particles in their counterion solution and measure the thermodynamic pressure and the pair distribution function from which we derive effective potentials of mean force. For a system with only electrostatic and hard core interactions, we investigate the effective potential between two like-charged spheres in divalent counterion solution as a function of concentration. We find a strong attractive interaction for high concentration and a global repulsive effective interaction for dilute systems. The results indicate a first order phase transition in…
We investigate the wrapping conformations of a strongly adsorbed polymer chain on an oppositely charged nano-sphere by employing a reduced (dimensionless) representation of a primitive chain-sphere model. This enables us to determine the global phase behavior of the chain conformation in a wide range of values for the system parameters including the chain contour length, its linear charge density and persistence length as well as the nano-sphere charge and radius, and also the salt concentration in the bathing solution. The phase behavior of a charged chain-sphere complex can be described in t…
By using the generalized version of the Shell Theorem analytical equations are derived to calculate the electric energy of a charged sphere and the field energy of the electrolyte inside and around the sphere. These electric energies are calculated as a function of the ion concentration of the electrolyte. The work needed to build up the charged sphere (i.e. the total charge-charge interaction energy) decreases with increasing ion concentration of the electrolyte because of the screening effect of the electrolyte on the charge-charge interaction. The energy needed to build up the charged spher…
We extend previous analysis of data for the melt-nucleus interfacial free energy, $γ$, gained from optical experiments on suspensions of charged colloidal spheres, which crystallize with body centred cubic (bcc) crystal structures. Compiling data from five pure species with different polydispersities and one binary mixture, we find the equilibrium melt-crystal interfacial energy to be considerably larger than the hard sphere reference value. Both this quantity and the entropy of freezing decrease with increasing polydispersity. Moreover, we give a first experimental determination of the Turnbu…
Colloidal glasses form from hard spheres, nearly hard spheres, ellipsoids and platelets or their attractive variants have been studied in detail. Complementing and checking theoretical approaches and simulations, the many different types of model systems have significantly advanced our understanding of the glass transition in general. Despite their early prediction, however, no experimental charged sphere glasses have been found at low density, where the competing process of crystallization prevails. We here report the formation of a transient amorphous solid formed from charged polymer sphere…
Determining the solvation free energies of single ions in water is one of the most fundamental problems in physical chemistry and yet many unresolved questions remain. In particular, the ability to decompose the solvation free energy into simple and intuitive contributions will have important implications for models of electrolyte solution. Here, we provide definitions of the various types of single ion solvation free energies based on different simulation protocols. We calculate solvation free energies of charged hard spheres using density functional theory interaction potentials with molecul…
We investigate the thermodynamics of complexation of functionalized charged nano-spheres with viral proteins. The physics of this problem is governed by electrostatic interaction between the proteins and the nano-sphere cores (screened by salt ions), but also by configurational degrees of freedom of the charged protein N-tails. We approach the problem by constructing an appropriate complexation free energy functional. On the basis of both numerical and analytical studies of this functional we construct the phase diagram for the assembly which contains the information on the assembled structure…
We study the stability of mixtures of highly screened repulsive charged spheres and non-adsorbing ideal polymer chains in a common solvent using free volume theory. The effective interaction between charged colloids in an aqueous salt solution is described by a screened-Coulomb pair potential, which supplements the pure hard-sphere interaction. The ideal polymer chains are treated as spheres that are excluded from the colloids by a hard-core interaction, whereas the interaction between two ideal chains is set to zero. In addition, we investigate the phase behaviour of charged colloid-polymer m…
Density functional theory is used to study binary colloidal fluids consisting of hard spheres and thin platelets in their bulk and near a planar hard wall. This system exhibits liquid-liquid coexistence of a phase that is rich in spheres (poor in platelets) and a phase that is poor in spheres (rich in platelets). For the mixture near a planar hard wall, we find that the phase rich in spheres wets the wall completely upon approaching the liquid demixing binodal from the sphere-poor phase, provided the concentration of the platelets is smaller than a threshold value which marks a first-order wet…
The interfacial free energy is a central quantity in crystallization from the meta-stable melt. In suspensions of charged colloidal spheres, nucleation and growth kinetics can be accurately measured from optical experiments. In previous work, from this data effective non-equilibrium values for the interfacial free energy between the emerging bcc-nuclei and the adjacent melt in dependence on the chemical potential difference between melt phase and crystal phase were derived using classical nucleation theory. A strictly linear increase of the interfacial free energy was observed as a function of…
It has been shown by Stell [J. Stat. Phys. 63, 1203 (1991)] that at low temperature monodisperse sticky spheres collapse to form coexisting close-packed solid and infinitely dilute gases. We show that polydisperse sticky spheres also collapse and calculate the collapse temperature. The polydisperse spheres separate into fractions with narrower polydispersities which can then solidify. This is the first example of a single-peaked polydisperse mixture phase separating. It implies that a mixture of polydisperse large hard spheres with much smaller hard spheres does not show fluid--fluid coexisten…
Polydisperse mixtures are those in which components with a whole range of sizes are present. It is shown that the fluid phase of polydisperse hard spheres is thermodynamically unstable unless the density of large spheres decreases at least exponentially as their size increases. The instability is with respect to the large spheres crystallising out into multiple solid phases.
By extending the nonequilibrium potential refinement algorithm and lattice switch method to the semigrand ensemble, the semigrand potentials of the fcc and hcp structures of polydisperse hard-sphere crystals are calculated with the bias sampling scheme. The result shows that the fcc structure is more stable than the hcp structure for polydisperse hard-sphere crystals below the terminal polydispersity.
Particle size polydispersity can help to inhibit crystallization of the hard-sphere fluid into close-packed structures at high packing fractions and thus is often employed to create model glass-forming systems. Nonetheless, it is known that hard-sphere mixtures with modest polydispersity still have ordered ground states. Here, we demonstrate by computer simulation that hard-sphere mixtures with increased polydispersity fractionate on the basis of particle size, and a bimodal subpopulation favors formation of topologically close-packed C14 and C15 Laves phases in coexistence with a disordered p…
Hard spheres with an attraction of range a tenth to a hundredth of the sphere diameter are constrained to remain fluid even at densities when monodisperse particles at equilibrium would have crystallised, in order to compare with experimental systems which remain fluid. They are found to have a fluid-fluid transition at high density. As the range of the attraction tends to zero, the density at the critical point tends towards the random-close-packing density of hard spheres.
We explore the equilibrium properties of a system composed of dipolar hard spheres. A new theory based on the ideas derived from the work of Debye and Hückel, Bjerrum, and Onsager is proposed to explain the absence of the anticipated critical point in this system.
We study the low-frequency dielectric response of highly charged spheres arranged in a cubic lattice and immersed in an electrolyte solution. We focus on the influence of the out-of-phase current in the regime where the ionic charge is neutral. We consider the case where the charged spheres have no surface conductance and no frequency-dependent surface capacitance. Hence, the frequency dispersion of the dielectric constant is dominated by the effect of neutral currents outside the electric double layer. In the thin double-layer limit, we use Fixman's boundary condition at the outer surface of …
The London ground-state energy formula as a function of number density $ρ$ for a system of boson hard spheres of diameter $c$ at zero temperature (corrected for the reduced mass of a pair of particles in a ``sphere-of-influence'' picture) generalized to describe fermion hard-sphere systems with four and two intrinsic degrees of freedom such as helium-three or neutron matter and symmetric nuclear matter, respectively, is proposed as the crystalline energy branch for hard-sphere systems. For the fluid branch we use the well-known, exact, low-density equation-of-state expansions for many-boson an…
The adsorption of highly \textit{oppositely} charged flexible polyelectrolytes onto a charged spherical surface is investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations in a fashion which resembles the layer-by-layer deposition technique introduced by Decher. Electroneutrality is insured at each step by the presence of monovalent counterions (anions and cations). We study in detail the structure of the \textit{equilibrium} complex. Our investigations of the first few layer formations strongly suggest that multilayering in spherical geometry is not possible as an equilibrium process with purely elec…
The effect of polydispersity on the phase behaviour of hard spheres is examined using a moment projection method. It is found that the Boublik-Mansoori-Carnahan-Starling-Leland equation of state shows a spinodal instability for a bimodal distribution if the large spheres are sufficiently polydisperse, and if there is sufficient disparity in mean size between the small and large spheres. The spinodal instability direction points to the appearance of a very dense phase of large spheres.
We review recent work on the phase behaviour of binary charged sphere mixtures as a function of particle concentration and composition. Both size ratios and charge ratios are varied over a wide range. By contrast to hard spheres the long ranged Coulomb interaction stabilizes the crystal phase at low particle concentrations and shifts the occurrence of amorphous solids to particle concentrations considerably larger than the freezing concentration. Depending on size- and charge ratios we observe upper azeotrope, spindle, lower azeotrope and eutectic types of phase diagrams, all known well from m…
Complexation of a long flexible polyelectrolyte (PE) molecule with oppositely charged spherical particles such as colloids, micelles, or globular proteins in a salty water solution is studied. PE binds spheres winding around them, while spheres repel each other and form almost periodic necklace. If the total charge of PE is larger than the total charge of spheres, repulsive correlations of PE turns on a sphere lead to inversion of the net charge of each sphere. In the opposite case, we predict another correlation effect: under-screened by PE spheres bind to PE in such a great number that they …
A possible approximate route to obtain the equation of state of the monodisperse hard-sphere system in the metastable fluid region from the knowledge of the equation of state of a hard-sphere mixture at high densities is discussed. The proposal is illustrated by using recent Monte Carlo simulation data for the pressure of a binary mixture. It is further shown to exhibit high internal consistency.
We report on calculations of the translational and rotational short-time self-diffusion coefficients $D^t_s$ and $D^r_s$ for suspensions of charge-stabilized colloidal spheres. These diffusion coefficients are affected by electrostatic forces and many-body hydrodynamic interactions (HI). Our computations account for both two-body and three-body HI. For strongly charged particles, we predict interesting nonlinear scaling relations $D^t_s\propto 1-a_tϕ^{4/3}$ and $D^r_s\propto 1-a_rϕ^2$ depending on volume fraction $ϕ$, with essentially charge-independent parameters $a_t$ and $a_r$. These scalin…
Very recently the effect of equisized charged hard sphere solutes in a mixture with core-softened fluid model on the structural and thermodynamic anomalies of the system has been explored in detail by using Monte Carlo simulations and integral equations theory [J. Chem. Phys., 2012, 137, 244502]. Our objective of the present short work is to complement this study by considering univalent ions of unequal diameters in a mixture with the same soft-core fluid model. Specifically, we are interested in the analysis of changes of the temperature of maximum density (TMD) lines with ion concentration f…
We report on calculations of the reduced sedimentation velocity $U/U_{0}$ in homogenous suspensions of strongly and weakly charged colloidal spheres as a function of particle volume fraction $ϕ$. For dilute suspensions of strongly charged spheres at low salinity, $U/U_{0}$ is well represented by the parametric form $1-pϕ^α$ with a fractional exponent $α=1/3$ and a parameter $p\simeq 1.8$, which is essentially independent from the macroion charge $Z$. This non-linear volume fraction dependence can be quantitatively understood in terms of a model of effective hard spheres with $ϕ$-dependent diam…
We determined bulk crystal nucleation rates in aqueous suspensions of charged spheres at low metastability. Experiments were performed in dependence on electrolyte concen-tration and for two different particle number densities. The time-dependent nucleation rate shows a pronounced initial peak, while post-solidification crystal size distributions are skewed towards larger crystallite sizes. At each concentration, the nucleation rate density initially drops exponentially with increasing salt concentration. The complete data set, however, shows an unexpected scaling of the nucleation rate densit…
Phase diagrams of binary mixtures of oppositely charged colloids are calculated theoretically. The proposed mean-field-like formalism interpolates between the limits of a hard-sphere system at high temperatures and the colloidal crystals which minimize Madelung-like energy sums at low temperatures. Comparison with computer simulations of an equimolar mixture of oppositely charged, equally sized spheres indicate semi-quantitative accuracy of the proposed formalism. We calculate global phase diagrams of binary mixtures of equally sized spheres with opposite charges and equal charge magnitude in …
The electrostatic interaction between metal spheres is an influential component in the assembly of many nanoscale materials in chemistry. Here we derive a method to calculate the energy and polarizations of metal spheres in arbitrary configurations to an arbitrary multipole order. This helps provide insight into the preferred configurations of charged metal particles and demonstrates the sensitivity of electrostatic interactions to configuration geometry.
We construct a non-perturbative fully analytical approximation for the thermodynamics and the structure of nonadditive hard-sphere fluid mixtures. The method essentially lies in a heuristic extension of the Percus-Yevick solution for additive hard spheres. Extensive comparison with Monte Carlo simulation data shows a generally good agreement, especially in the case of like-like radial distribution functions.
The conventional (Zwanzig-Mountain) expressions for instantaneous elastic moduli of simple fluids predict their divergence as the limit of hard sphere (HS) interaction is approached. However, elastic moduli of a true HS fluid are finite. Here we demonstrate that this paradox reveals the soft- to hard-sphere crossover in fluid excitations and thermodynamics. With extensive \emph{in-silico} study of fluids with repulsive power-law interactions ($\propto r^{-n}$), we locate the crossover at $n\simeq 10-20$ and develop a simple and accurate model for the HS regime. The results open novel prospects…
We study the cylinder to sphere morphological transition of diblock copolymers in aqueous solution with a hydrophobic block and a charged block. We find a metastable undulated cylinder configuration for a range of charge and salt concentrations which, nevertheless, occurs above the threshold where spheres are thermodynamically favorable. By modeling the shape of the cylinder ends, we find that the free energy barrier for the transition from cylinders to spheres is quite large and that this barrier falls significantly in the limit of high polymer charge and low solution salinity. This suggests …
In this short communication we present a possible scheme to study the radial distribution function of the quantum slightly polydisperse Baxter sticky hard sphere liquid at finite temperature thorugh a semi-analytical method devised by Chandler and Wolynes.
The energy route to the equation of state of hard-sphere fluids is ill-defined since the internal energy is just that of an ideal gas and thus it is independent of density. It is shown that this ambiguity can be avoided by considering a square-shoulder interaction and taking the limit of vanishing shoulder width. The resulting hard-sphere equation of state coincides exactly with the one obtained through the virial route. Therefore, the energy and virial routes to the equation of state of hard-sphere fluids can be considered as equivalent.
We present (asymptotically) exact expressions for the mobility and electrophoretic mobility of a weakly charged spherical particle in an $1:1$ electrolyte solution. This is done by analytically solving the electro and hydrodynamic equations governing the electric potential and fluid flow with respect to an electric field and a nonelectric force. The resulting formulae are cumbersome, but fully explicit and trivial for computation. In the case of a very small particle compared to the Debye screening length ($R \ll r_D$) our results reproduce proper limits of the classical Debye and Onsager theo…
We consider the complexation of highly charged semiflexible polyelectrolytes with oppositely charged macroions. On the basis of scaling arguments we discuss how the resulting complexes depend on the persistence length of the polyelectrolyte, the salt concentration, and the sizes and charges of the chain and the macroions. We study first the case of complexation with a single sphere and calculate the wrapping length of the chain. We then extend our considerations to complexes involving many wrapped spheres and study cooperative effects. The mechanical properties of such a complex under an exter…
The direct correlation function and the (static) structure factor for a seven-dimensional hard-sphere fluid are considered. Analytical results for these quantities are derived within the Percus-Yevick theory
The ionic composition and pair correlations in fluid phases of realistically salt-free charged colloidal sphere suspensions are calculated in the primitive model. We obtain the number densities of all ionic species in suspension, including low-molecular weight microions, and colloidal macroions with acidic surface groups, from a self-consistent solution of a coupled physicochemical set of nonlinear algebraic equations and non-mean-field liquid integral equations. Here, we study suspensions of colloidal spheres with sulfonate or silanol surface groups, suspended in demineralized water that is s…
We propose a simple Monte Carlo method to calculate the interfacial free energy between the substrate and the material. Using this method we investigate the interfacial free energys of the hard sphere fluid and solid phases near a smooth hard wall. According to the obtained interfacial free energys of the coexisting fluid and solid phases and the Young equation we are able to determine the contact angle with high accuracy, cos$θ$ = 1:010(31), which indicates that a smooth hard wall can be wetted completely by the hard sphere crystal at the interface between the wall and the hard sphere fluid.
Understanding the interplay between ordered structures and substrate curvature is an interesting problem with versatile applications, including functionalization of charged supramolecular surfaces and modern microfluidic technologies. In this work, we investigate the two-dimensional packing structures of charged particles confined on a pinched sphere. By continuously pinching the sphere, we observe cleavage of elongated scars into pleats, proliferation of disclinations, and subsequently, emergence of a depletion zone at the negatively curved waist that is completely void of particles. We syste…
We show that the dynamics of soft-sphere systems with purely repulsive interactions can be described by introducing an effective hard-sphere diameter determined using the Andersen-Weeks-Chandler approximation. We find that this approximation, known to describe static properties of liquids, also gives a good description of a dynamical quantity, the relaxation time, even in the vicinity of the glass transition.
We report a series of Lattice-Boltzmann simulations of the sedimentation velocity of charged disks. In these simulations, we explicitly account for the hydrodynamic and electrostatic forces on disks and on their electrical double layer. By comparing our results with those for spheres with equal surface and charge, we can clarify the effect of the particle shape on the sedimentation process. We find that disks and spheres exhibit a different dependence of the sedimentation velocity on the Debye screening length. An analysis of the behavior of highly charged disks (beyond the scope of the linear…
We provide exact expressions for the electrostatic energy of uniformly-charged prolate and oblate spheroidal shells. We find that uniformly-charged prolate spheroids of eccentricity greater than 0.9 have lower Coulomb energy than a sphere of the same area. For the volume-constrained case, we find that a sphere has the highest Coulomb energy among all spheroidal shells. Further, we derive the change in the Coulomb energy of a uniformly-charged shell due to small, area-conserving perturbations on the spherical shape. Our perturbation calculations show that buckling-type deformations on a sphere …
We have measured the phase behavior of a binary mixture of like-charged colloidal spheres with a size ratio of 0.9 and a charge ratio of 0.96 as a function of particle number density n and composition p. Under exhaustively deionized conditions the aqueous suspension forms solid solutions of body centered cubic structure for all compositions. The freezing and melting lines as a function of composition show opposite behavior and open a wide, spindle shaped coexistence region. Lacking more sophisticated treatments, we model the interaction in our mixtures as an effective one-component pair energy…
By using the Rosenfeld density functional we determine the number density profiles of both components of binary hard-sphere fluids close to a planar hard wall as well as the corresponding excess coverage and surface tension. The comparison with published simulation data demonstrates that the Rosenfeld functional, both its original version and sophistications thereof, is superior to previous approaches and exhibits the same excellent accuracy as known from studies of the corresponding one-component system.
From a reanalysis of the published literature, the low-shear viscosity of suspensions of hard spheres is shown to have a dynamic crossover in its concentration dependence, from a stretched exponential at lower concentrations to a power law at elevated concentrations. The crossover is sharp, with no transition region in which neither form applies, and occurs at a volume fraction (ca. 0.41) and relative viscosity (ca. 11) well below the sphere volume fraction and relative viscosity (0.494, 49, respectively) of the lower phase boundary of the hard sphere melting transition. For soft spheres -- ta…
A general Monte Carlo simulation method of calculating the elastic constants of polydisperse hard-sphere colloidal crystal was developed. The elastic constants of a size polydisperse hard sphere fcc crystal is calculated. The pressure and three elastic constants(C11, C12 and C44) increase significantly with the polydispersity. It was also found from extrapolation that there is a mechanical terminal polydispersity above which a fcc crystal will be mechanically unstable.
A versatile new approach for calculating the depletion potential in a hard sphere mixture is presented. This is valid for any number of components and for arbitrary densities. We describe two different routes to the depletion potential for the limit in which the density of one component goes to zero. Both routes can be implemented within density functional theory and simulation. We illustrate the approach by calculating the depletion potential for a big hard sphere in a fluid of small spheres near a planar hard wall. The density functional results are in excellent agreement with simulations.
We present a simple argument to account for crystallization of hard spheres under the action of a gravitational field. The paper attempts to bridge the gap between two communities of scientists, one working on granular materials and the other on inhomogeneous liquid state theory.
We report a molecular dynamics study of crystallization in highly asymmetric binary hard-sphere mixtures, in which the large spheres can form a crystal phase while the small ones remain disordered during the crystallization process of the large spheres. By taking advantage of assisting crystal nucleation with a patterned substrate, direct evidence is presented that there is a close link between the diffusive redistribution of the small spheres and the crystal formation of the large spheres. Although the addition of a second component with large size disparity will not alter the crystal structu…
