We propose a simple Monte Carlo method to calculate the interfacial free energy between the substrate and the material. Using this method we investigate the interfacial free energys of the hard sphere fluid and solid phases near a smooth hard wall. According to the obtained interfacial free energys of the coexisting fluid and solid phases and the Young equation we are able to determine the contact angle with high accuracy, cos$θ$ = 1:010(31), which indicates that a smooth hard wall can be wetted completely by the hard sphere crystal at the interface between the wall and the hard sphere fluid.
We argue that for complete wetting at a curved substrate (wall) the wall-fluid surface tension is non-analytic in $R_i^{-1}$, the curvature of the wall and that the density profile of the fluid near the wall acquires a contribution proportional to the gas-liquid surface tension $\times R_i^{-1}$ plus higher-order contributions which are non-analytic in $R_i^{-1}$. These predictions are confirmed by results of density functional calculations for the square-well model of a liquid adsorbed on a hard sphere and on a hard cylinder where complete wetting by gas (drying) occurs. The implications of o…
Different computational techniques in combination with molecular dynamics computer simulation are used to to determine the wall-liquid and the wall-crystal interfacial free energies of a modified Lennard-Jones (LJ) system in contact with a solid wall. Two different kinds of solid walls are considered: a flat structureless wall and a structured wall consisting of an ideal crystal with the particles rigidly attached to fcc lattice sites. Interfacial free energies are determined by a thermodynamic integration scheme, the anisotropy of the pressure tensor, the non-equilibrium work method based on …
We study the adhesive contact between elastic solids with randomly rough, self affine fractal surfaces. We present molecular dynamics (MD) simulation results for the interfacial stress distribution and the wall-wall separation. We compare the MD results for the relative contact area and the average interfacial separation, with the prediction of the contact mechanics theory of Persson. We find good agreement between theory and the simulation results. We apply the theory to the system studied by Benz et al. involving polymer in contact with polymer, but in this case the adhesion gives only a sma…
We perform a study of the interfacial properties of a model suspension of hard sphere colloids with diameter $σ_c$ and non-adsorbing ideal polymer coils with diameter $σ_p$. For the mixture in contact with a planar hard wall, we obtain from simulations the wall-fluid interfacial free energy, $γ_{wf}$, for size ratios $q=σ_p/σ_c=0.6$ and 1, using thermodynamic integration, and study the (excess) adsorption of colloids, $Γ_c$, and of polymers, $Γ_p$, at the hard wall. The interfacial tension of the free liquid-gas interface, $γ_{lg}$, is obtained following three different routes in simulations: …
Using a dynamic Surface Force Apparatus, we demonstrate that the notion of slip length used to describe the boundary flow of simple liquids, is not appropriate for viscoelastic liquids. Rather, the appropriate description lies in the original Navier's partial slip boundary condition, formulated in terms of an interfacial friction coefficient. We establish an exact analytical expression to extract the interfacial friction coefficient from oscillatory drainage forces between a sphere and a plane, suitable for dynamic SFA or Atomic Force Microscopy non-contact measurements. We use this model to i…
We investigate the interfacial phase behavior of a binary fluid mixture composed of repulsive point Yukawa particles. Using a simple approximation for the Helmholtz free energy functional, which yields the random phase approximation (RPA) for the pair direct correlation functions, we calculate the equilibrium fluid density profiles of the two species of particles adsorbed at a planar wall. We show that for a particular choice (repulsive exponential) of the wall potentials and the fluid pair-potential parameters, the Euler-Lagrange equations for the equilibrium fluid density profiles may be tra…
We experimentally study the viscous fingering instability in a fluid-fluid phase separated colloid-polymer mixture by means of laser scanning confocal microscopy and microfluidics. We focus on three aspects of the instability. (i) The interface between the two demixed phases has an ultralow surface tension, such that we can address the role of thermal interface fluctuations. (ii) We image the interface in three dimensions allowing us to study the interplay between interface curvature and flow. (iii) The displacing fluid wets all walls completely, in contrast to traditional viscous fingering ex…
In this paper we revisit the derivation of a nonlocal interfacial Hamiltonian model for systems with short-ranged intermolecular forces. Starting from a microscopic Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian with a double parabola potential, we reformulate the derivation of the interfacial model using a rigorous boundary integral approach. This is done for three scenarios: a single fluid phase in contact with a nonplanar substrate (i.e., wall); a free interface separating coexisting fluid phases (say, liquid and gas); and finally a liquid-gas interface in contact with a nonplanar confining wall, as is…
Interfacial properties of colloid--polymer mixtures are examined within an effective one--component representation, where the polymer degrees of freedom are traced out, leaving a fluid of colloidal particles interacting via polymer--induced depletion forces. Restriction is made to zero, one and two--body effective potentials, and a free energy functional is used which treats colloid excluded volume correlations within Rosenfeld's Fundamental Measure Theory, and depletion--induced attraction within first--order perturbation theory. This functional allows a consistent treatment of both ideal and…
The effect of solvent quality on dilute and semi-dilute regimes of polymers in solution is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The equation of state, adsorptions near a hard wall, wall-polymer surface tension and effective depletion potentials are all calculated as a function of concentration and solvent quality. We find important differences between polymers in good and theta solvents. In the dilute regime, the physical properties for polymers in a theta solvent closely resemble those of ideal polymers. In the semi-dilute regime, however, significant differences are found.
We study the adsorption of a fluid in the grand canonical ensemble occurring at a planar heterogeneous wall which is decorated with a chemical stripe of width $L$. We suppose that the material of the stripe strongly preferentially adsorbs the liquid in contrast to the outer material which is only partially wet. This competition leads to the nucleation of a droplet of liquid on the stripe, the height $h_m$ and shape of which (at bulk two-phase coexistence) has been predicted previously using mesoscopic interfacial Hamiltonian theory. We test these predictions using a microscopic Fundamental Mea…
Combining analytic calculations, computer simulations, and classical density functional theory we determine the interfacial tension of orientable two-dimensional hard rectangles near a curved hard wall. Both a circular cavity holding the particles and a hard circular obstacle surrounded by particles are considered. We focus on moderate bulk densities (corresponding to area fractions up to 50 percent) where the bulk phase is isotropic and vary the aspect ratio of the rectangles and the curvature of the wall. The Tolman length, which gives the leading curvature correction of the interfacial tens…
In a preceding paper, we have presented a general lattice formulation of the dynamic self-consistent field (DSCF) theory for inhomogeneous, unentangled homopolymer fluids. Here we apply the DSCF theory to study both transient and steady-state interfacial structure, flow and rheology in a sheared planar channel containing either a one-component melt or a phase-separated, two-component blend. We focus here on the case that the solid-liquid and the liquid-liquid interfaces are parallel to the walls of the channel, and assume that the system has translational symmetry within planes parallel to the…
Several model fluids in contact with planar, spherical, and cylindrical walls are investigated for small number densities within density functional theory. The dependence of the solid-fluid interfacial tension on the curvature of spherical and cylindrical walls is examined and compared with the corresponding expression derived within the framework of morphometric thermodynamics. Particular attention is paid to the implications of the choice of the interface location, which underlies the definition of the interfacial tension. We find that morphometric thermodynamics is never exact for the consi…
The hard sphere crystal-liquid interfacial free energy, ($γ_{\rm cl}$), is determined from molecular dynamics simulations using a novel thermodynamic integration (TI) scheme. The advantage of this TI scheme compared to previous methods is to successfully circumvent hysteresis effects due to the movement of the crystal-liquid interface. This is accomplished by the use of extremely short-ranged and impenetrable Gaussian flat walls which prevent the drift of the interface while imposing a negligible free-energy penalty. We find that it is crucial to analyze finite-size effects in order to obtain …
We consider the phase equilibria of a fluid confined in a deep capillary groove of width $L$ with identical side walls and a bottom made of a different material. All walls are completely wet by the liquid. Using density functional theory and interfacial models, we show that the meniscus separating liquid and gas phases at two phase capillary-coexistence meets the bottom capped end of the groove at a capillary contact angle $θ^{\rm cap}(L)$ which depends on the difference between the Hamaker constants. If the bottom wall has a weaker wall-fluid attraction than the side walls, then $θ^{\rm cap}>…
We investigate the solvation of a hard spherical cavity, of radius $R$, immersed in a fluid for which the interparticle forces are short ranged. For thermodynamic states lying close to the liquid binodal, where the chemical potential deviation $δμ\equiv μ- μ_{co}(T)$ is very small and positive, complete wetting by gas (drying) occurs and two regimes of interfacial behavior can be identified. These are characterized by the length scale $R_c=2 γ_{gl}^\infty/(Δρδμ)$, where $γ_{gl}^\infty$ is the planar gas-liquid surface tension and $Δρ$ is the difference in coexisting densities at temperature $T…
A novel thermodynamic integration (TI) scheme is presented to compute the crystal-liquid interfacial free energy ($γ_{\rm cl}$) from molecular dynamics simulation. The scheme is applied to a Lennard-Jones system. By using extremely short-ranged and impenetrable Gaussian flat walls to confine the liquid and crystal phases, we overcome hysteresis problems of previous TI schemes that stem from the translational movement of the crystal-liquid interface. Our technique is applied to compute $γ_{\rm cl}$ for the (100), (110) and (111) orientation of the crystalline phase at three temperatures under c…
We consider an interface between two demixed A and B phases, confined in a thin film between two antisymmetric walls, one of which prefers A and the other B. Above the wetting transition, the interface is stabilized in the center of the film. Based on a suitable extension of the Cahn-Hilliard gradient-square theory in combination with the capillary wave theory, we argue that the confinement influences the interfacial structure in two ways: It squeezes the intrinsic structure and cuts off the capillary wave spectrum. As a result, the interfacial width is proportional to the film thickness D in …
The results obtained from molecular dynamics simulations of the friction at an interface between polymer melts and weakly attractive crystalline surfaces are reported. We consider a coarse-grained bead-spring model of linear chains with adjustable intrinsic stiffness. The structure and relaxation dynamics of polymer chains near interfaces are quantified by the radius of gyration and decay of the time autocorrelation function of the first normal mode. We found that the friction coefficient at small slip velocities exhibits a distinct maximum which appears due to shear-induced alignment of semif…
We develop a methodology for the calculation of surface free energies based on the probability distribution of a wandering interface. Using a simple extension of the NpT sampling, we allow the interface area to randomly probe the available space and evaluate the surface free energy from histogram analysis and the corresponding average. The method is suitable for studying systems with either continuous or discontinuous potentials, as it does not require explicit evaluation of the virial. The proposed algorithm is compared with known results for the surface tension of Lennard--Jones and Square W…
We present a quantitative comparison between extensive Monte Carlo simulations and self-consistent field calculations on the phase diagram and wetting behavior of a symmetric, binary (AB) polymer blend confined into a film. The flat walls attract one component via a short range interaction. The critical point of the confined blend is shifted to lower temperatures and higher concentrations of the component with the lower surface free energy. The binodals close the the critical point are flattened compared to the bulk and exhibit a convex curvature at intermediate temperatures -- a signature of …
Combining three numerical methods (forward flux sampling, seeding of droplets, and finite size droplets), we probe the crystallization of hard spheres over the full range from close to coexistence to the spinodal regime. We show that all three methods allow to sample different regimes and agree perfectly in the ranges where they overlap. By combining the nucleation work calculated from forward flux sampling of small droplets and the nucleation theorem, we show how to compute the nucleation work spanning three orders of magnitude. Using a variation of the nucleation theorem, we show how to extr…
We investigate the kinetics and the free energy landscape of the crystallization of hard spheres from a supersaturated metastable liquid though direct simulations and forward flux sampling. In this first paper, we describe and test two different ways to reconstruct the free energy barriers from the sampled steady state probability distribution of cluster sizes without sampling the equilibrium distribution. The first method is based on mean first passage times, the second on splitting probabilities. We verify both methods for a single particle moving in a double-well potential. For the nucleati…
We present a model based on the lattice Boltzmann equation that is suitable for the simulation of dynamic wetting. The model is capable of exhibiting fundamental interfacial phenomena such as weak adsorption of fluid on the solid substrate and the presence of a thin surface film within which a disjoining pressure acts. Dynamics in this surface film, tightly coupled with hydrodynamics in the fluid bulk, determine macroscopic properties of primary interest: the hydrodynamic slip; the equilibrium contact angle; and the static and dynamic hysteresis of the contact angles. The pseudo- potentials em…
