We investigate the interfacial phase behavior of a binary fluid mixture composed of repulsive point Yukawa particles. Using a simple approximation for the Helmholtz free energy functional, which yields the random phase approximation (RPA) for the pair direct correlation functions, we calculate the equilibrium fluid density profiles of the two species of particles adsorbed at a planar wall. We show that for a particular choice (repulsive exponential) of the wall potentials and the fluid pair-potential parameters, the Euler-Lagrange equations for the equilibrium fluid density profiles may be transformed into a single ordinary differential equation and the profiles obtained by a simple quadrature. For certain other choices of the fluid pair-potential parameters fluid-fluid phase separation of the bulk fluid is observed. We find that when such a mixture is exposed to a planar hard-wall, the fluid exhibits complete wetting on the species 2 poor side of the binodal, i.e. we observe a thick film of fluid rich in species 2 adsorbed at the hard-wall. The thickness of the wetting film grows logarithmically with the concentration difference between the fluid state-point and the binodal and is proportional to the bulk correlation length of the intruding (wetting) fluid phase. However, for state points on the binodal that are further from the critical point, we find there is no thick wetting film. We determine the accompanying line of first-order (pre-wetting) surface phase transitions which separate a thin and thick adsorbed film. We show that for some other choices of repulsive wall potentials the pre-wetting line is still present, but its location and extent in the phase diagram is strongly dependent on the wall-fluid interaction parameters.
Previous treatments of three-dimensional (3D) short-ranged wetting transitions have missed an entropic or low temperature Casimir contribution to the binding potential describing the interaction between the unbinding interface and wall. This we determine by exactly deriving the interfacial model for 3D wetting from a more microscopic Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian. The Casimir term changes the interpretation of fluctuation effects occurring at wetting transitions so that, for example, mean-field predictions are no longer obtained when interfacial fluctuations are ignored. While the Casimir…
Due to the slow dynamics of the wetting ridge, it is challenging to predict the wetting morphology of liquid drops on thin lubricant coated surfaces. It is hypothesized that when a drop sinks on a lubricated surface, quasi-static wetting morphology can be numerically computed only from the knowledge of interfacial energies, lubricant thickness, and drop volume. We used Surface Evolver software for the numerical computation of the interface profiles for a four-phase system. For the experiments, we used drops of 80 wt% formamide on silicone oil coated substrates with varying lubricant thickness,…
We introduce an accurate and efficient method for characterizing surface wetting and interfacial properties, such as the contact angle made by a liquid droplet on a solid surface, and the vapor-liquid surface tension of a fluid. The method makes use of molecular simulations in conjunction with the indirect umbrella sampling technique to systematically wet the surface and estimate the corresponding free energy. To illustrate the method, we study the wetting of a family of Lennard-Jones surfaces by water. We estimate contact angles for surfaces with a wide range of attractions for water by using…

In this paper we study the effects of dynamic wetting on the immiscible displacement of a high viscosity fluid subject to the radial injection of a less viscous fluid in a Hele-Shaw cell. The displaced fluid can leave behind a trailing film that coats the cell walls, dynamically affecting the pressure drop at the fluid interface. By considering the non-linear pressure drop in a boundary element formulation, we construct a Picard scheme to iteratively predict the interfacial velocity and subsequent displacement in finite mobility ratio flow regimes. Dynamic wetting delays the onset of finger bi…
In a powder bed fusion additive manufacturing (AM) process, the balling effect has a significant impact on the surface quality of the printing parts. Surface wetting helps the bonding between powder and substrate and the inter-particle fusion, whereas the balling effect forms large spheroidal beads around the laser beam and causes voids, discontinuities, and poor surface roughness during the printing process. To better understand the transient dynamics, a theoretical model with a simplified 2D configuration is developed to investigate the underlying fluid flow and heat transfer, phase transiti…
We experimentally investigate the nature of 2D phase transitions in a quasi-2D granular fluid. Using a surface decorated with periodically spaced dimples we observe interfacial tension between coexisting liquid and crystal phases. Measurements of the orientational and translational order parameters and associated susceptibilities indicate that the surface topography alters the order of the phase transition from a two-step continuous one to a first-order liquid-crystal one. The interplay of boundary inelasticity and geometry, either order-promoting or inhibiting, controls the wetting of the gra…

Gas-liquid phase separation in oppositely charged colloids: stability and interfacial tension
We report on the thinning of supported liquid films driven by thermocapillarity. The liquids are oil films, of initial thicknesses of a few tens of microns. A local and moderate heating of the glass substrate on which they are spread on induces a thermocapillary flow, which allows the formation of ultra-thin films. We show that, within a given time range, the thinning dynamics of submicron thick films is governed by the thermocapillary stress. It results in a simple dependency of the thickness profiles with time, which is evidenced by the collapse of the data onto a master curve. The master cu…
