We present a systematic theoretical study of the five smallest oligoacenes (naphthalene, anthracene, tetracene, pentacene, and hexacene) in their anionic, neutral, cationic, and dicationic charge states. We used density functional theory (DFT) to obtain the ground-state optimised geometries, and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) to evaluate the electronic absorption spectra. Total-energy differences enabled us to evaluate the electron affinities and first and second ionisation energies, the quasiparticle correction to the HOMO-LUMO energy gap and an estimate of the excitonic effects in the neutral molecules. Electronic absorption spectra have been computed by combining two different implementations of TD-DFT: the frequency-space method to study general trends as a function of charge-state and molecular size for the lowest-lying in-plane long-polarised and short-polarised $π\toπ^\star$ electronic transitions, and the real-time propagation scheme to obtain the whole photo-absorption cross-section up to the far-UV. Doubly-ionised PAHs are found to display strong electronic transitions of $π\toπ^\star$ character in the near-IR, visible, and near-UV spectral ranges, like their singly-charged counterparts. While, as expected, the broad plasmon-like structure with its maximum at about 17-18 eV is relatively insensitive to the charge-state of the molecule, a systematic decrease with increasing positive charge of the absorption cross-section between about 6 and about 12 eV is observed for each member of the class.
Impact of environmentally induced fluctuations on quantum mechanically mixed electronic and vibrational pigment states in photosynthetic energy transfer and 2D electronic spectra
Chem.
Linear and nonlinear electronic spectra provide an important tool to probe the absorption and transfer of electronic energy. Here we introduce a pure state Ehrenfest approach to obtain accurate linear and nonlinear spectra that is applicable to systems with large numbers of excited states and complex chemical environments. We achieve this by representing the initial conditions as sums of pure states and unfolding multi-time correlation functions into the Schrödinger picture. By doing this we show that one can obtain significant improvements in accuracy over the previously used projected Ehrenf…
In this study, we explore the potential of machine learning for modeling molecular electronic spectral intensities as a continuous function in a given wavelength range. Since presently available chemical space datasets provide excitation energies and corresponding oscillator strengths for only a few valence transitions, here, we present a new dataset -- \bigqm -- with 12,880 molecules containing up to 7 CONF atoms and report ground state and excited state properties. A publicly accessible web-based data-mining platform is presented to facilitate on-the-fly screening of several molecular proper…

The ultrafast nonadiabatic internal conversion in azomethane is explored by the on-the-fly trajectory surface-hopping simulations of photoinduced dynamics and femtosecond transient absorption (TA) pump-probe (PP) spectra at three electronic-structure theory levels, OM2/MRCI, SA-CASSCF, and XMS-CASPT2. All these dynamics simulations predict ultrafast internal conversion. On the one hand, the OM2/MRCI and SA-CASSCF methods yield similar excited-state dynamics, while the XMS-CASPT2 method predicts a much slower population decay. On the other hand, the TA PP signals simulated at the SA-CASSCF and …
Within the well-established optical response function formalism, a new strategy with the central idea of employing the forward-backward stochastic Schrödinger equations in a segmented way to accurately obtain the two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectrum is presented in this paper. Based on the simple excitonically coupled dimer model system, the validity and efficiency of the proposed schemes are demonstrated in detail, along with the comparison against the deterministic hierarchy equations of motion and perturbative second order time-convolutionless quantum master equations. In addition, an i…
Molecular fragment or embedding methods are powerful techniques for overcoming scalability limitations in electronic structure theory by dividing large molecular systems into individual units that are small enough to be treated using standard techniques. Our group has developed a linear-scaling coupled-cluster based fragment effective field method, molecular cluster perturbation theory (MCPT), that provides a systematically improvable description of the electronic wavefunction and is scalable to thousands of atoms using the Aces4 massively parallel software package. We will present a systemati…
The presence of solvent tunes many properties of a molecule, such as its ground and excited state geometry, dipole moment, excitation energy, and absorption spectrum. Because the energy of the system will vary depending on the solvent configuration, explicit solute-solvent interactions are key to understanding solution-phase reactivity and spectroscopy, simulating accurate inhomogeneous broadening, and predicting absorption spectra. In this tutorial review, we give an overview of factors to consider when modeling excited states of molecules interacting with explicit solvent. We provide practic…
Vibrationally resolved electronic absorption spectra including the effect of vibrational pre-excitation are computed in order to interpret and predict vibronic transitions that are probed in the Vibrationally Promoted Electronic Resonance (VIPER) experiment [L. J. G. W. van Wilderen et al., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 53, 2667 (2014)]. To this end, we employ time-independent and time-dependent methods based on the evaluation of Franck-Condon overlap integrals and Fourier transformation of time-domain wavepacket autocorrelation functions, respectively. The time-independent approach uses a generalized…
Advances in time resolved spectroscopy have provided new insight into the energy transmission in natural photosynthetic complexes. Novel theoretical tools and models are being developed in order to explain the experimental results. We provide a model calculation for the two-dimensional electronic spectra of Cholorobaculum tepidum which correctly describes the main features and transfer time scales found in recent experiments. From our calculation one can infer the coupling of the antenna chlorosome with the environment and the coupling between the chlorosome and the Fenna-Matthews-Olson comple…
Electronic transitions involving core-level orbitals offer a localized, atomic-site and element specific peek window into statistical systems such as molecular liquids. Although formally understood, the complex relation between structure and spectrum -- and the effect of statistical averaging of highly differing spectra of individual structures -- render the analysis of an ensemble-averaged core-level spectrum complicated. We explore the applicability of machine learning for molecular structure -- core-level spectrum interpretation. We focus on the electronic Hamiltonian using the \ce{H2O} mol…
We introduce an almost analytical method to simulate 2D electronic spectra as a double Fourier transform of the the non-linear response function (NRF) corresponding to a particular optical pulse sequence. We employ a unitary transformation to represent the total system Hamiltonian in a stationary basis that allows us to separate contributions from decoherence and phonon-mediated population relaxation to the NRF. Previously, one of us demonstrated the use of an analytic, cumulant expansion approach to calculate the decoherence term. Here, we extend this idea to obtain an accurate expression for…
Fast and inexpensive characterization of materials properties is a key element to discover novel functional materials. In this work, we suggest an approach employing three classes of Bayesian machine learning (ML) models to correlate electronic absorption spectra of nanoaggregates with the strength of intermolecular electronic couplings in organic conducting and semiconducting materials. As a specific model system, we consider PEDOT:PSS, a cornerstone material for organic electronic applications, and so analyze the couplings between charged dimers of closely packed PEDOT oligomers that are at …
We introduce a heterodimer model in which multiple mechanisms of vibronic coupling and their impact on energy transfer can be explicitly studied. We consider vibronic coupling that arises through either Franck-Condon activity in which each site in the heterodimer has a local electron-phonon coupling and as Herzberg-Teller activity in which the transition dipole moment coupling the sites has an explicit vibrational mode-dependence. We have computed two-dimensional electronic-vibrational (2DEV) spectra for this model while varying the magnitude of these two effects and find that 2DEV spectra con…
Influences of quantum mechanically mixed electronic and vibrational pigment states in 2D electronic spectra of photosynthetic systems: Strong electronic coupling cases
We perform a beat-frequency-resolved analysis for two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy using a high-speed and stable 2D electronic spectrometer and few-cycle visible laser pulses to disentangle the vibrational coherences in an artificial fluorescent protein. We develop a highly stable ultrashort light source that generates 5.3-fs visible pulses with a pulse energy of 4.7 uJ at a repetition rate of 10 kHz using multi-plate pulse compression and laser filamentation in a gas cell. The above-5.3-fs laser pulses together with a high-speed multichannel detector enable us to measure a series of 2D…
Among polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pyrene is widely used as an optical probe thanks to peculiar ultraviolet absorption and infrared emission features. Interestingly, this molecule is also an abundant component of the interstellar medium, where it is detected via its unique spectral fingerprints. In this work, we present a comprehensive first-principles study on the electronic and vibrational response of pyrene and its cation to ultrafast, coherent pulses in resonance with their optically active excitations in the ultraviolet region. The analysis of molecular symmetries, electronic structu…
We present a methodology for simulating multi-dimensional electronic spectra of molecular aggregates with coupling of electronic excitation to a structured environment using the stochastic non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (NMQSD) method in combination with perturbation theory for the response functions. A crucial aspect of our approach is that we propagate the NMQSD equation in a doubled system Hilbert space, but with the same noise. We demonstrate that our approach shows fast convergence with respect to the number of stochastic trajectories, providing a promising technique for numerical …
Silicon mononitride ($^{28}$Si$^{14}$N, $^{29}$Si$^{14}$N, $^{30}$Si$^{14}$N, $^{28}$Si$^{15}$N) line lists covering infrared, visible and ultraviolet regions are presented. The \name\ line lists produced by ExoMol include rovibronic transitions between six electronic states: \XS, \AS, \BS, \DS, \asi, \bsi. The \ai\ potential energy and coupling curves, computed at the multireference configuration interaction (MRCI/aug-cc-pVQZ) level of theory, are refined for the observed states by fitting their analytical representations to 1052 experimentally derived SiN energy levels determined from rovibr…
The measured multi-dimensional spectral response of different light harvesting complexes exhibits oscillatory features which suggest an underlying coherent energy transfer. However, making this inference rigorous is challenging due to the difficulty of isolating excited state coherences in highly congested spectra. In this work, we provide a coherent control scheme that suppresses ground state coherences, thus making rephasing spectra dominated by excited state coherences. We provide a benchmark for the scheme using a model dimeric system and numerically exact methods to analyze the spectral r…
In solution, UV-vis spectroscopy is often used to investigate structural changes in biomolecules (i.e., nucleic acids), owing to changes in the environment of their chromophores (i.e., the nucleobases). Here we address whether action spectroscopy could achieve the same for gas-phase ions, while taking the advantage of additional spectrometric separation of complex mixtures. We therefore systematically studied the action spectroscopy of homo-base 6-mer DNA strands (dG6, dA6, dC6, dT6) and discuss the results in light of gas-phase structures validated by ion mobility spectrometry and infrared io…
Nanomaterials made of the cerium oxides CeO$_2$ and Ce$_2$O$_3$ have a broad range of applications, from catalysts in automotive, industrial or energy operations to promising materials to enhance hadrontherapy effectiveness in oncological treatments. To elucidate the physico-chemical mechanisms involved in these processes, it is of paramount importance to know the electronic excitation spectra of these oxides, which are obtained here through high-accuracy linear-response time-dependent density functional theory calculations. In particular, the macroscopic dielectric response functions $\barε$ …
