Vibrationally resolved electronic absorption spectra including the effect of vibrational pre-excitation are computed in order to interpret and predict vibronic transitions that are probed in the Vibrationally Promoted Electronic Resonance (VIPER) experiment [L. J. G. W. van Wilderen et al., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 53, 2667 (2014)]. To this end, we employ time-independent and time-dependent methods based on the evaluation of Franck-Condon overlap integrals and Fourier transformation of time-domain wavepacket autocorrelation functions, respectively. The time-independent approach uses a generalized version of the FCclasses method [F. Santoro et al., J. Chem. Phys. 126, 084509 (2007)]. In the time-dependent approach, autocorrelation functions are obtained by wavepacket propagation and by evaluation of analytic expressions, within the harmonic approximation including Duschinsky rotation effects. For several medium-sized polyatomic systems, it is shown that selective pre-excitation of particular vibrational modes leads to a red-shift of the low-frequency edge of the electronic absorption spectrum, which is a prerequisite for the VIPER experiment. This effect is typically most pronounced upon excitation of ring distortion modes within an aromatic pi-system. Theoretical predictions as to which modes show the strongest VIPER effect are found to be in excellent agreement with experiment.
Vibrationally resolved near-edge x-ray absorption spectra at the K-edge for a number of small molecules have been computed from anharmonic vibrational configuration interaction calculations of the Franck-Condon factors. The potential energy surfaces for ground and core-excited states were obtained at the core-valence separated CC2, CCSD, CCSDR(3), and CC3 levels of theory, employing the Adaptive Density-Guided Approach (ADGA) scheme to select the single points at which to perform the energy calculations. We put forward an initial attempt to include pair-mode coupling terms to describe the pote…
Coupling of nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom mediates energy flow in molecules after optical excitation. The associated coherent dynamics in polyatomic systems, however, remain experimentally unexplored. Here, we combined transient absorption spectroscopy with electronic population control to reveal nuclear wavepacket dynamics during the S2-S1 internal conversion in beta-carotene. We show that passage through a conical intersection is vibrationally coherent and thereby provides direct feedback on the role of different vibrational coordinates in the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer ap…
We report a time-dependent density functional based tight-binding (TD-DFTB) scheme for the calculation of UV/Vis spectra, explicitly taking into account the excitation of nuclear vibrations via the adiabatic Hessian Franck-Condon (AH|FC) method with a harmonic approximation for the nuclear wavefunction. The theory of vibrationally resolved UV/Vis spectroscopy is first summarized from the viewpoint of TD-DFTB. The method is benchmarked against time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations for strongly dipole allowed excitations in various aromatic and polar molecules. Using the…
In this work an analysis of the highly vibrationally excited states of thiophosgene (SCCl$_{2}$) is made in order to gain insights into some of the experimental observations and spectral features. The states analyzed herein lie in a spectrally complex region where strong mode mixings are expected due to the overlap of several strong anharmonic Fermi resonances. Two recent techniques, a semiclassical angle space representation of the eigenstates and the parametric variation of the eigenvalues (level-velocities) are used to identify eigenstate sequences exhibiting common localization characteris…
Leveraging MMW-MMW Double Resonance Spectroscopy to Understand the Pure Rotational Spectrum of Glycidaldehyde and 17 of Its Vibrationally Excited States
Resonant vibrational excitation cross sections and the corresponding rate coefficients for electron-N$_2$ collisions occurring through the N$_2^-(\textrm{X}\ ^2Π_g)$ resonant state are reviewed. New calculations are performed using accurate potential energies curves for the N$_2$ electronic ground state, taken from literature, and for the N$_2^-$ resonant state, obtained from $R$-matrix calculations. The calculations are extended also to the resonant excitation processes involving the N$_2$ ground state vibrational continuum, leading to dissociation. Electron impact dissociation is found to be…
Wave packet propagation succeeding electron transfer (ET) from alizarin dye molecules into the nanocrystalline TiO2 semiconductor has been studied by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. Due to the ultrafast time scale of the ET reaction of about 6 fs the system shows substantial differences to molecular ET systems. We show that the ET process is not mediated by molecular vibrations and therefore classical ET theories lose their applicability. Here the ET reaction itself prepares a vibrational wave packet and not the electromagnetic excitation by the laser pulse. Furthermore, the gener…
It is discussed how vibrationally excited molecules in their electronic ground state can transfer their vibrational energy to the electronic motion of neighbors and ionize them. Based on explicit examples of vibrationally excited molecules and anionic neighbors, it is demonstrated that the transfer can be extremely efficient at intermolecular distances much beyond distances at which the molecule and its neighbor can form a bond.
The rate, selectivity and efficiency of plasma-based conversion processes is strongly affected by nonequilibrium phenomena. High concentrations of vibrationally excited molecules are such a plasma-induced effect. It is frequently assumed that vibrationally excited molecules are important in plasma catalysis because their presence lowers the apparent activation energy of dissociative chemisorption reactions and thus increases the conversion rate. A detailed atomic-level understanding of vibrationally stimulated catalytic reactions in the context of plasma catalysis is however lacking. Here, we …
The role of vibrational excitation of a single mode in the scattering of methane is studied by wave packet simulations of oriented CH4 and CD4 molecules from a flat surface. All nine internal vibrations are included. In the translational energy range from 32 up to 128 kJ/mol we find that initial vibrational excitations enhance the transfer of translational energy towards vibrational energy and increase the accessibility of the entrance channel for dissociation. Our simulations predict that initial vibrational excitations of the asymmetrical stretch (nu_3) and especially the symmetrical stretch…
Effects of coupling between a molecular exciton and a surface plasmon (exciton-plasmon coupling) on the luminescence properties of the molecule and the surface plasmons are investigated using the nonequilibrium Green's function method. Molecular absorption and enhancement by molecular electronic and vibrational modes (molecular modes) lead to dip and peak structures in the luminescence spectra of the surface plasmons. These structures will correspond to the peak and dip structures observed in a recent experiment. We found that in addition to the molecular dynamics, the re-absorption by the sur…
State-by-state cross sections for dissociative electron attachment and electron-impact dissociation for molecular oxygen are computed using ab initio resonance curves calculated with the R-matrix method. When O2 is in its vibrational ground state, the main contribution for both processes comes from the $^2Π_u$ resonance state of $O_2^-$ but with a significant contribution from the $^4Σ$ resonant state. Vibrational excitation leads to an increased contribution from the low-lying $^2Π_{g}$ resonance, greatly increased cross sections for both processes, and the threshold moving to lower energies.…
Schrödinger equation with Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian and double well potential as model of vibrationally enhanced tunneling for proton transfer in hydrogen bond
Theoretical analysis of the effect of an external vibration on proton transfer (PT) in a hydrogen bond (HB) is carried out. It is based on the two-dimensional Schrödinger equation with trigonometric double-well potential. Its solution obtained within the framework of the standard adiabatic approximation is available. An analytic formula is derived that provides the calculation of PT rate with the help of elements implemented in {\sl {Mathematica}}. We exemplify the general theory by calculating PT rate constant for the intermolecular HB in the Zundel ion ${\rm{H_5O_2^{+}}}$ (oxonium hydrate). …
Vibrationally resolved spectra provide a stringent test of the accuracy of theoretical calculations. We combine the thawed Gaussian approximation (TGA) with an on-the-fly ab initio (OTF-AI) scheme to calculate the vibrationally resolved emission spectra of oligothiophenes with up to five rings. The efficiency of the OTF-AI-TGA permits treating all vibrational degrees of freedom on an equal footing even in pentathiophene with 105 vibrational degrees of freedom, thus obviating the need for the global harmonic approximation, popular for large systems. Besides reproducing almost perfectly the expe…

We study the statistical properties of charge and energy transport in electron conducting junctions with electron-phonon interactions, specifically, the thermoelectric efficiency and its fluctuations. The system comprises donor and acceptor electronic states, representing a two-site molecule or a double quantum dot system. Electron transfer between metals through the two molecular sites is coupled to a particular vibrational mode which is taken to be either harmonic or anharmonic- a truncated (two-state) spectrum. Considering these models we derive the cumulant generating function in steady st…
We present a microwave spectral taxonomy study of several hydrocarbon/CS$_2$ discharge mixtures in which more than 60 distinct chemical species, their more abundant isotopic species, and/or their vibrationally excited states were detected using chirped-pulse and cavity Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopies. Taken together, in excess of 85 unique variants were detected, including several new isotopic species and more than 25 new vibrationally excited states of C$_2$S, C$_3$S, and C$_4$S, which have been assigned on the basis of published vibration-rotation interaction constants for C$_3$S,…
Franck-Condon Simulation of Vibrationally-Resolved X-ray Spectra for Diatomic Systems: Validation of Harmonic Approximation and Density Functional Theory
Pump-probe photoionization has been used to map the relaxation processes taking place from highly vibrationally excited levels of the S2 state of azulene, populated directly or via internal conversion from the S4 state. Photoelectron spectra obtained by 1+2[prime] two-color time-resolved photoelectron imaging are invariant (apart from in intensity) to the pump-probe time delay and to the pump wavelength. This reveals a photoionization process which is driven by an unstable electronic state (e.g., doubly excited state) lying below the ionization potential. This state is postulated to be populat…
The vibrational spectra of simple CH$_3^+$-Rg (Rg=He, Ne, Ar, Kr) complexes have been studied by vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) theory relying on multidimensional potential energy surfaces (PES) obtained from explicitly correlated coupled cluster calculations, CCSD(T)-F12a. In agreement with experimental results, the series of rare gas atoms leads to rather unsystematic results and indicates huge zero point vibrational energy effects for the helium complex. In order to study these sensitive complexes more consistently, we also introduce configuration averaged vibrational self-cons…
Accurate $EF{}^1Σ^+_g-X{}^1Σ^+_g$ transition energies in molecular hydrogen were determined for transitions originating from levels with highly-excited vibrational quantum number, $v=11$, in the ground electronic state. Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy was applied on vibrationally excited H$_2^*$, produced via the photodissociation of H$_2$S, yielding transition frequencies with accuracies of $45$ MHz or $0.0015$ cm$^{-1}$. An important improvement is the enhanced detection efficiency by resonant excitation to autoionizing $7pπ$ electronic Rydberg states, resulting in narrow transitions du…
We show that the dynamics of (vertical) Franck-Condon excitations in the regime where Holstein-coupled vibrational modes mix strongly with electronic degrees of freedom sharply contrasts with the known self-localized behavior of vibrationally relaxed excitations. Instead, the strongly-coupled modes are found to periodically induce resonances between interacting electronic sites, during which effective excitation transfer occurs, allowing Franck-Condon excitations to attain substantial mean square displacements under conditions where relaxed excitations are essentially trapped to a single site.…
We simulate the long-range inter-complex electronic energy transfer in Photosystem II -- from the antenna complex, via a core complex, to the reaction center -- using a non-Markovian (ZOFE) quantum master equation description that allows us to quantify the electronic coherence involved in the energy transfer. We identify the pathways of the energy transfer in the network of coupled chromophores, using a description based on excitation probability currents. We investigate how the energy transfer depends on the initial excitation -- localized, coherent initial excitation versus delocalized, inco…
Transient grating acoustic spectroscopy has been applied to studies on the vibrational energy relaxation process of the electronic ground state of azulene, two 1-alkylazulenes, and five bridged azulene-anthracenes in three different solvents: 1,1,1-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane, acetonitrile, and xenon. The solute molecule was vibrationally excited by the photo-excitation of the auzlenyl group to the S1 state through the fast internal conversion, and the rate of solvent thermalization due to the vibrational energy relaxation was determined. The thermalization rates for 1-alkylazulenes and br…
