While tremendous success has been achieved to date in creating both single phase and composite magnetoelectric materials, the quintessential electric-field control of magnetism remains elusive. In this work, we demonstrate a linear magnetoelectric effect which arises from a novel carrier-mediated mechanism, and is a universal feature of the interface between a dielectric and a spin-polarized metal. Using first-principles density functional calculations, we illustrate this effect at the SrRuO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface and describe its origin. To formally quantify the magnetic response of such an interface to an applied electric field, we introduce and define the concept of spin capacitance. In addition to its magnetoelectric and spin capacitive behavior, the interface displays a spatial coexistence of magnetism and dielectric polarization suggesting a route to a new type of interfacial multiferroic.
The key physical property of multiferroic materials is the existence of a coupling between magnetism and polarization, i.e. magnetoelectricity. The origin and manifestations of magnetoelectricity can be very different in the available plethora of multiferroic systems, with multiple possible mechanisms hidden behind the phenomena. In this Review, we describe the fundamental physics that causes magnetoelectricity from a theoretical viewpoint. The present review will focus on the main stream physical mechanisms in both single phase multiferroics and magnetoelectric heterostructures. The most rece…
We propose an unexplored class of absorbing materials for high-efficiency solar cells: heterostructures of transition-metal oxides. In particular, LaVO_3 grown on SrTiO_3 has a direct band gap ~1.1 eV in the optimal range as well as an internal potential gradient, which can greatly help to separate the photo-generated electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, oxide heterostructures afford the flexibility to combine LaVO_3 with other materials such as LaFeO_3 in order to achieve even higher efficiencies with band-gap graded solar cells. We use density-functional theory to demonstrate these features.
The list of materials systems displaying both electric and magnetic long range order is short. Oxides, however, concentrate numerous examples of multiferroicity with, in some cases, a large magnetoelectric coupling. As a result, a fruitful research field has emerged contemporaneously with the consolidation of spintronic. The synergy between multiferroics and spintronics was meant to be inevitable and hence the characterization of spintronic functionalities in multiferroic materials is rather abundant. The aim of the present chapter is to review the oxide heterostructures where magnetoelectric …
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (MX2)/metal oxide heterostructures have shown unique physical properties, making them promising materials for various applications ranging from photocatalysis to solar energy conversion. Understanding the interfacial interactions is highly desirable for designing these heterostructures having excellent performance. Here we systematically study the interfacial interaction in monolayer MX2 (M=Mo, W; X=S, Se)/CeO2 heterostructures and its effects on electronic and optical properties by density functional theory. It is found that the interfacial int…
The marriage between a two-dimensional layered material (2DLM) and a complex transition metal oxide (TMO) results in a variety of physical and chemical phenomena that would not have been achieved in either material alone. Interesting recent discoveries in systems such as graphene/SrTiO3, graphene/LaAlO3/SrTiO3, graphene/ferroelectric oxide, MoS2/SrTiO3, and FeSe/SrTiO3 heterostructures include voltage scaling in field-effect transistors, charge state coupling across an interface, quantum conductance probing of the electrochemical activity, novel memory functions based on charge traps, and grea…
The conductance confined at the interface of complex oxide heterostructures provides new opportunities to explore nanoelectronic as well as nanoionic devices. Herein we show that metallic interfaces can be realized in SrTiO3-based heterostructures with various insulating overlayers of amorphous LaAlO3, SrTiO3 and yttria-stabilized zirconia films. On the other hand, samples of amorphous La7/8Sr1/8MnO3 films on SrTiO3 substrates remain insulating. The interfacial conductivity results from the formation of oxygen vacancies near the interface, suggesting that the redox reactions on the surface of …
We fabricated ultrathin ferroelectric/correlated electron oxide heterostructures composed of the ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3 and the correlated electron oxide (CEO) La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 on SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser epitaxy. The hole accumulation in the ultrathin CEO layer was substantially modified by heterostructuring with the ferroelectric layer, resulting in an insulator-metal transition. In particular, our thickness dependent study showed that drastic changes in transport and magnetic properties were strongly coupled to the modulation of charge carriers by ferroelectric field effect, …
We present research results on the electronic transport in heterostructures based on p-type nickel oxide (NiO) with the n-type oxide semiconductors zinc oxide (ZnO) and cadmium oxide (CdO). NiO is a desirable candidate for application in (opto-)electronic devices. However, because of its small electron affinity, heterojunctions with most n-type oxide semiconductors exhibit conduction and valence band offsets at the heterointerface in excess of 1 eV. ZnO/NiO junctions exhibit a so called type-II band alignment, making electron-hole recombination the only process by which a current can verticall…
We report measurements of the thickness and temperature (T) dependencies of current-induced spin-orbit torques, especially the field-like (FL) component, in various heavy metal (HM)/normal metal (NM) spacer/ferromagnet (FM)/Oxide (MgO and HfOx/MgO) heterostructures. The FL torque in these samples originates from spin current generated by the spin Hall effect (SHE) in the HM. For a FM layer sufficiently thin that a substantial portion of this spin current can reach the FM/Oxide interface, T-dependent spin scattering there can yield a strong FL torque that is, in some cases, opposite in sign to …
In this paper, density functional theory calculations are used to explore the electronic and atomic reconstruction at interfaces between III-III/I-V oxides. In particular, at these interfaces, two dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) with twice the interfacial charge densities of the prototypical LaTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructure are observed. Furthermore, a significant decrease in the band effective masses of the conduction electrons is shown, suggesting that possible enhancements in electron mobilities may be achievable. These findings represent a framework for chemically modulating 2DEGs, thereby…
Large Rashba effect efficiently tuned by an external electric field is highly desired for spintronic devices. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that large Rashba splitting is locked at conduction band minimum in ferroelectric Bi(Sc/Y/La/Al/Ga/In)O3/PbTiO3 heterostructures where the position of Fermi level is precisely controlled via its stoichiometry. Fully reversible Rashba spin texture and drastic change of Rashba splitting strength with ferroelectric polarization switching are realized in the symmetric and asymmetric heterostructures, respectively. By artificially tuning t…
Multiferroics are those materials with more than one ferroic order, and magnetoelectricity refers to the mutual coupling between magnetism and electricity. The discipline of multiferroicity has never been so highly active as that in the first decade of the twenty-first century, and it has become one of the hottest disciplines of condensed matter physics and materials science. A series of milestones and steady progress in the past decade have enabled our understanding of multiferroic physics substantially comprehensive and profound, which is further pushing forward the research frontier of this…
A new approach to all-optical detection and control of the coupling between electric and magnetic order on ultrafast timescales is achieved using time-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) to study a ferroelectric (FE)/ferromagnet (FM) oxide heterostructure. We use femtosecond optical pulses to modify the spin alignment in a Ba$_{0.1}$Sr$_{0.9}$TiO$_{3}$(BSTO)/La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LCMO) heterostructure and selectively probe the ferroelectric response using SHG. In this heterostructure, the pump pulses photoexcite non-equilibrium quasiparticles in LCMO, which rapidly interact with…
Understanding and controlling the interfacial magnetic properties of ferromagnetic thin films are crucial for spintronic device applications. However, using conventional magnetometry, it is difficult to detect them separately from the bulk properties. Here, by utilizing tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance in a single-barrier heterostructure composed of La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (LSMO)/ LaAlO3 (LAO)/ Nb-doped SrTiO3 (001), we reveal the presence of a peculiar strong two-fold magnetic anisotropy (MA) along the [110]c direction at the LSMO/LAO interface, which is not observed in bulk LSMO. This MA shows…
Thickness driven electronic phase transitions are broadly observed in different types of functional perovskite heterostructures. However, uncertainty remains whether these effects are solely due to spatial confinement, broken symmetry or rather to a change of structure with varying film thickness. Here, we present direct evidence for the relaxation of oxygen 2p and Mn 3d orbital (p-d) hybridization coupled to the layer dependent octahedral tilts within a La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 film driven by interfacial octahedral coupling. An enhanced Curie temperature is achieved by reducing the octahedral tilting v…
The interfacial behavior of quantum materials leads to emergent phenomena such as two dimensional electron gases, quantum phase transitions, and metastable functional phases. Probes for in situ and real time surface sensitive characterization are critical for active monitoring and control of epitaxial synthesis, and hence the atomic-scale engineering of heterostructures and superlattices. Termination switching, especially as an interfacial process in ternary complex oxides, has been studied using a variety of probes, often ex situ; however, direct observation of this phenomena is lacking. To a…
Controlling magnetism by using electric fields is a goal of research towards novel spintronic devices and future nano-electronics. For this reason, multiferroic heterostructures attract much interest. Here we provide experimental evidence, and supporting DFT analysis, of a transition in La0.65Sr0.35MnO3 (LSMO) thin film to a stable ferromagnetic phase, that is induced by the structural and strain properties of the ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BTO) substrate, which can be modified by applying external electric fields. X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) measurements on Mn L edges with a synchrotr…
The development of novel functional materials in experimental labs combined with computer-based compound simulation brings the vision of materials design on a microscopic scale continuously closer to reality. For many applications interface and surface phenomena rather than bulk properties are key. One of the most fundamental qualities of a material-vacuum interface is the energy required to transfer an electron across this boundary, i.e. the work function. It is a crucial parameter for numerous applications, including organic electronics, field electron emitters, and thermionic energy convert…
Molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) attracts attention as a high efficient and low cost photocatalyst for hydrogen production, but suffers from low conductance and high recombination rate of photo-generated charge carriers. In this work, we investigate the MoS$_2$ heterostructures with graphene variants (GVs), including graphene, graphene oxide, and their boron- and nitrogen-doped variants, by using first-principles calculations. Systematic comparison between graphene and graphene oxide composites is performed, and contrary effect of B and N doping on interface function and hydrogen evolution is cl…
Supercapacitors or ultracapacitors are promising for efficient energy storage applications, owing to their high power density, high charge-discharge rates, and long cycle life performance. To achieve this goal, a large specific surface area, an high electronic conductivity and a fast cation intercalation de-intercalation process are generally required in the design and preparation of materials for high-performance supercapacitors. Recently, core-shell heterostructures with multifunctionalities are regarded as one of promising materials for supercapacitors or ultracapacitors applications. In pa…
The oxide heterostructure [(YFeO$_3$)$_5$(LaFeO$_3$)$_5$]$_{40}$, which is magnetically ordered and piezoelectric at room temperature, has been constructed from two weak ferromagnetic AFeO$_3$ perovskites with different A cations using RHEED-monitored pulsed laser deposition. The polarisation arises through the removal of inversion centres present within the individual AFeO$_3$ components. This symmetry reduction is a result of combining ordering on the A site, imposed by the periodicity of the grown structure, with appropriate orientations of the octahedral tilting characteristic of the perov…
The use of the spin Hall effect and its inverse to electrically detect and manipulate dynamic spin currents generated via ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) driven spin pumping has enabled the investigation of these dynamically injected currents across a wide variety of ferromagnetic materials. However, while this approach has proven to be an invaluable diagnostic for exploring the spin pumping process it requires strong spin-orbit coupling, thus substantially limiting the materials basis available for the detector/channel material (primarily Pt, W and Ta). Here, we report FMR driven spin pumping i…
Oxide heterostructures are a new class of materials by design, that open the possibility for engineering challenging electronic properties, in particular correlation effects beyond an effective single-particle description. This short review tries to highlight some of the demanding aspects and questions, motivated by the goal to describe the encountered physics from first principles. The state-of-the-art methodology to approach realistic many-body effects in strongly correlated oxides, the combination of density functional theory with dynamical mean-field theory, will be briefly introduced. Heterostructures and crystal interfaces play a major role in state-of-the-art semiconductor devices and play a central role in the field of oxide electronics. In oxides the link between the microscopic properties of the interfaces and bulk properties of the resulting heterostructures challenge our fundamental understanding. Insights on the early growth stage of interfaces and its influence on resulting physical properties are scarce -- typically the information is inferred from post growth characterization. Here, we report on real time measurements of the transport properties of SrTiO3-based h…
Empowering conventional materials with unexpected magnetoelectric properties is appealing to the multi-functionalization of existing devices and the exploration of future electronics. Recently, owing to its unique effect in modulating a matter's properties, ultra-small dopants, e.g. H, D, and Li, attract enormous attention in creating emergent functionalities, such as superconductivity, and metal-insulator transition. Here, we report an observation of bipolar conduction accompanied by a giant positive magnetoresistance in D-doped metallic Ti oxide (TiOxDy) films. To overcome the challenges in …
Complex oxide heterostructures are hot candidates for post CMOS multi-functional devices. Especially in spintronics applications ferromagnetic oxides may play a key role because they can exhibit extraordinary high spin polarization. Indeed, there are already plenty of examples in spintronics, notably in the area of spin pumping and inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) \cite{Azevedo2011, Czeschka2011, Hahn2013, Obstbaum2014}. Although complex oxides have been used in these experiments as a source of spin currents, they have never been demonstrated to act as a spin sink that exhibits ISHE. Here we sh…
We report on the non-trivial nanoscale kinetics of the deposition of novel complex oxide heterostructures composed of a unit-cell thick correlated metal LaNiO3 and dielectric LaAlO3. The multilayers demonstrate exceptionally good crystallinity and surface morphology maintained over the large number of layers, as confirmed by AFM, RHEED, and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. To elucidate the physics behind the growth, the temperature of the substrate and the deposition rate were varied over a wide range and the results were treated in the framework of a two-layer model. These results are of fundam…
One of the most fundamental phenomena and a reminder of the electron's relativistic nature is the Rashba spin splitting for broken inversion symmetry. Usually this splitting is a tiny relativistic correction, hardly discernible in experiment. Interfacing a ferroelectric, BaTiO$_3$, and a heavy 5$d$ metal with a large spin-orbit coupling, Ba(Os,Ir)O$_3$, we show that giant Rashba spin splittings are indeed possible and even fully controllable by an external electric field. Based on density functional theory and a microscopic tight binding understanding, we conclude that the electric field is am…
Novel phenomena appear when two different oxide materials are combined together to form an interface. For example, at the interface of LaAlO3/SrTiO3, two dimensional conductive states form to avoid the polar discontinuity and magnetic properties are found at such interface. In this work, we propose a new type of interface between two nonmagnetic and nonpolar oxides that could host a conductive state with magnetic properties, where it is the ferroelectric polarization discontinuity instead of the polar discontinuity that leads to the charge transfer, forming the interfacial conductive or magnet…
Intense hard x-ray pulses from a free-electron laser induce irreversible structural damage in a perovskite oxide epitaxial heterostructure when pulse fluences exceed a threshold value. The intensity of x-ray diffraction from a 25-nm thick epitaxial BiFeO$_{3}$ layer on a SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate measured using a series of pulses decreases abruptly with a per-pulse fluence of 2.7 x 10$^{6}$ photons $μ$m$^{-2}$ at 9.7 keV photon energy, but remains constant for 1.3 x 10$^{6}$ photons $μ$m$^{-2}$ or less. The damage resulted in the destruction of the BiFeO$_{3}$ thin film within the focal spot area …
Most recently, orbital-selective quantum well states of $d$ electrons have been experimentally observed in SrVO$_3$ ultrathin films [K. Yoshimatsu et. al., Science 333, 319 (2011)] and SrTiO$_3$ surfaces [A. F. Santander-Syro et. al., Nature 469, 189 (2011)]. Hitherto, one tries to explain these experiments by a nearly free electron (NFE) model, an approach widely used for delocalized electrons in semiconductor heterostructures and simple metal films. We show that a tight binding (TB) model is more suitable for describing heterostructures with more localized $d$ electrons. In this paper, we co…
The strain dependent functional properties of epitaxial transition metal oxide films can be significantly modified via substrate selection. However, large lattice mismatches preclude dislocation-free epitaxial growth on ferroelectric substrates, whose strain states are modified by applied electric fields. Here we overcome this mismatch problem by depositing an epitaxial film of ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 on a single crystal substrate of well lattice matched SrTiO3 via a film of SrRuO3 that we subsequently dissolved, permitting the transfer of unstrained La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 to a ferroelectric subs…
We experimentally investigate the origin of the two-magnon scattering (TMS) in heavy-metal (HM)/ferromagnet (FM)/oxide heterostructures (FM = Co, Ni81Fe19, or Fe60Co20B20) by varying the materials located above and below the FM layers. We show that strong TMS in HM/FM/oxide systems arises primarily at the HM/FM interface and increases with the strength of interfacial spin-orbit coupling and magnetic roughness at this interface. TMS at the FM/oxide interface is relatively weak, even in systems where spin-orbit coupling at this interface generates strong interfacial magnetic anisotropy. We also …
We report on a systematic study of a number of structurally identical but chemically distinct transition metal oxides in order to determine how the material-specific properties such as the composition and the strain affect the properties at the interface of heterostructures. Our study considers a series of structures containing two layers of ferromagnetic SrRuO3, with antiferromagnetic insulating manganites sandwiched in between. The results demonstrate how to control the strength and relative orientation of interfacial ferromagnetism in correlated electron materials by means of valence state …
Correlated oxide heterostructures pose a challenging problem in condensed matter research due to their structural complexity interweaved with demanding electron states beyond the effective single-particle picture. By exploring the correlated electronic structure of SmTiO$_3$ doped with few layers of SrO, we provide an insight into the complexity of such systems. Furthermore, it is shown how the advanced combination of band theory on the level of Kohn-Sham density functional theory with explicit many-body theory on the level of dynamical mean-field theory provides an adequate tool to cope with …
Variations in growth conditions associated with different deposition techniques can greatly affect the phase stability and defect structure of complex oxide heterostructures. We synthesized superlattices of the paramagnetic metal LaNiO3 and the large band gap insulator LaAlO3 by atomic layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and compared their crystallinity, microstructure as revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images and resistivity. The MBE samples show a higher density of stacking faults, but smoother interfaces and generally hi…
