It was suggested that the two consecutive metamagnetic transitions and the large residual resistivity discovered in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ can be understood via the nematic order and its domains in a single layer system. However, a recently reported anisotropy between two longitudinal resistivities induced by tilting the magnetic field away from the c-axis cannot be explained within the single layer nematic picture. To fill the gap in our understanding within the nematic order scenario, we investigate the effects of bilayer coupling and in-plane magnetic field on the electronic nematic phases in a bilayer system. We propose that the in-plane magnetic field in the bilayer system modifies the energetics of the domain formation, since it breaks the degeneracy of two different nematic orientations. Thus the system reveals a pure nematic phase with a resistivity anisotropy in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. In addition to the nematic phase, the bilayer coupling opens a novel route to a hidden nematic phase that preserves the x-y symmetry of the Fermi surfaces.
Bilayer ruthenate Ca$_3$(Ru$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)$_2$O$_7$ ($x$ = 0.05) exhibits an incommensurate magnetic soliton lattice driven by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Here we report complex field-induced magnetic phase transitions and memory effect in this system via single-crystal neutron diffraction and magnetotransport measurements. We observe first-order incommensurate-to-commensurate magnetic transitions upon applying the magnetic field both along and perpendicular to the propagation axis of the incommensurate spin structure. Furthermore, we find that the metastable states formed upon decr…
Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at $T_{\text{N}}=56 $K, followed by a Mott-like (MI) transition at $T_{\text{MI}}=48$ K. This nonmetallic ground state, with a charge gap of 0.1 eV, is suppressed by a highly anisotropic metamagnetic transition that leads to a fully spin-polarized metallic state. We report the observation of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the \textit{gapped} state, colossal magnetoresistance in the inter-plane resistivity with a large anisotropy different from that observed in the magnetization, and non-Fermi liquid behavior in the metallic state a…
We report the first observation of two-dimensional incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in the layered metallic perovskite Sr3Ru2O7. The wavevectors where the magnetic fluctuations are strongest are different from those observed in the superconducting single layer ruthenate Sr2RuO4 and appear to be determined by Fermi surface nesting. No antiferromagnetic ordering is observed for temperatures down to 1.5K. For temperatures T<20K, the fluctuations become predominately ferromagnetic. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurements provide concrete evidence of the coexistence of competing interacti…
We report the results of low temperature transport, specific heat and magnetisation measurements on high quality single crystals of the bilayer perovskite Sr3Ru2O7, which is a close relative of the unconventional superconductor Sr2RuO4. Metamagnetism is observed, and transport and thermodynamic evidence for associated critical fluctuations is presented. These relatively unusual fluctuations might be pictured as variations in the Fermi surface topography itself. No equivalent behaviour has been observed in the metallic state of Sr2RuO4.
Ca3Ru2O7 with a Mott-like transition at 48 K features different in-plane anisotropies of magnetization and magnetoresistance. Applying magnetic field along the magnetic easy-axis precipitates a spin-polarized state via a first-order metamagnetic transition, but does not lead to a full suppression of the Mott state, whereas applying magnetic field along the magnetic hard axis does, causing a resistivity reduction of three orders of magnitude. The colossal magnetoresistivity is attributed to the collapse of the orbital ordered and spin-polarized state. Evidence for a density wave is also present…
We report the nanoscale imaging of Ti-doped bilayer calcium ruthenates during the Mott metal-insulator transition by microwave impedance microscopy. Different from a typical first-order phase transition where coexistence of the two terminal phases takes place, a new metallic stripe phase oriented along the in-plane crystalline axes emerges inside both the G-type antiferromagnetic insulating state and paramagnetic metallic state. The effect of this electronic state can be observed in macroscopic measurements, allowing us to construct a phase diagram that takes into account the energetically com…
Although the odd-parity multipole order barely occurs in crystals with high symmetry, it can be formed in locally noncentrosymmetric crystals. We illustrate the odd-parity electric octupole order generated in a bilayer structure. When the local electric quadrupole is alternatively stacked between layers, it is regarded as an electric octupole order from the viewpoint of symmetry. We show that the $p_y s_x + p_x s_y$ spin nematic order is induced by the spin-orbit coupling in the electric octupole state, and it results from the spontaneous inversion symmetry breaking leading to the $D_{2d}$ poi…
The combination of the local-density approximation (LDA) with the rotationally invariant slave-boson theory (RISB) is used to investigate the realistic correlated electronic structure of Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. From Wannier-downfolding the low-energy band structure to a three-band model for the Ru($t_{2g}$) states, the interacting problem is solved including intra- and inter-orbital Hubbard terms as well as spin-flip and pair-hopping interactions. Therewith it is possible to obtain valuable insight into the orbital occupations, relevant local spin multiplets and the fermiology with increasing corre…
The ruthenate family of layered perovskites has been a topic of intense interest with much work dedicated to understanding the superconducting state of the single layer, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Another longstanding puzzle is the lack of superconductivity in its sister compound, Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, which constrains the possible superconducting mechanisms of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Here we address a microscopic mechanism that unifies superconducting and spin-density wave order in this family of materials. Beginning from a model of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ featuring intraband pseudospin-singlet superconductivity originating f…
Materials realizing the XY model in two dimensions (2D) are sparse. Here we use neutron triple-axis spectroscopy to investigate the critical static and dynamical magnetic fluctuations in the square-lattice antiferromagnets Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ and Ca$_{3}$Ru$_2$O$_{7}$. We probe the temperature-dependence of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Bragg-intensity, the $Q$-width, the amplitude, and the energy-width of the magnetic diffuse scattering in vicinity to the Néel temperature $T_N$ to determine the critical behavior of the magnetic order parameter $M$, correlation length $ξ$, susceptibility $χ$, and …
Sr3Ru2O7 belongs to the family of layered strontium ruthenates and exhibits a range of unusual emergent properties, such as electron nematic behavior and metamagnetism. Here, we show that epitaxial film strain significantly modifies these phenomena. In particular, we observe enhanced magnetic interactions and an electron nematic phase that extends to much higher temperatures and over a larger magnetic field range than in bulk single crystals. Furthermore, the films show an unusual anisotropic non-Fermi liquid behavior that is controlled by the direction of the applied magnetic field. At high m…
It is shown that metamagnetic transition in metals can occur via the formation of electronic nematic order. We consider a simple model where the spin-dependent Fermi surface instability gives rise to the formation of an electronic nematic phase upon increasing the applied Zeeman magnetic field. This leads to two consecutive metamagnetic transitions that separate the nematic phase from the low-field and high-field 'isotropic' metallic phases. Possible connection to the physics of the bilayer Ruthenate, Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, is also discussed.
We present a detailed investigation of the specific heat in Ca$_3$(Ru$_{1-x}M_x$)$_2$O$_7$ ($M$ = Ti, Fe, Mn) single crystals. With different dopants and doping levels, three distinct regions are present, including a quasi-2D metallic state with an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order formed by ferromagnetic bilayers (AFM-$b$), a Mott insulating state with G-type AFM order (G-AFM) and a localized state with a mixed AFM-b and G-AFM phase. Our specific heat data provide deep insights into the Mott transitions induced by Ti and Mn dopings. We observed not only an anomalous large mass enhancement but als…
The nature of the emergent phase near a putative quantum critical point in the bilayer ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ has been a recent subject of intensive research. It has been suggested that this phase may possess electronic nematic order(ENO). In this work, we investigate the possibility of nematic domain formation in the emergent phase, using a phenomenological model of electrons with ENO and its coupling to lattice degrees of freedom. The resistivity due to the scattering off the domain walls is shown to closely follow the ENO parameter. Our results provide qualitative explanations for the …
An electronic nematic state spontaneously breaks a point-group symmetry of an underlying lattice. As a result, the nematic-isotropic transition accompanies a Fermi surface distortion. However, the anisotropic nature of the nematic state at a macroscopic scale can be easily wiped out when domains of different orientations of nematic order exist. We suggest that a spatial pattern of local density of states (LDOS) in the presence of a non-magnetic impurity can be a direct probe of the nematic order. We study various patterns of LDOS across the quantum phase transition between the isotropic and ne…
Electronic nematic phases are broadly characterized by spontaneously broken rotational symmetry. Although they have been widely recognized in the context of high temperature cuprates, bilayer ruthenates, and iron-based superconductors, the focus so far has been exclusively on the uniform nematic phase. Recently, however, it was proposed that on a square lattice a nematic instability in the d-wave charge channel could lead to a spatially modulated nematic state, where the modulation vector q is determined by the relative location of the Fermi level to the van Hove singularity. Interestingly, th…
Nematic superconductors possess unconventional superconducting order parameters that spontaneously break rotational symmetry of the underlying crystal. In this work we propose a mechanism for nematic superconductivity stabilized by strong density wave fluctuations in two dimensions. While the weak-coupling theory finds the fully gapped chiral state to be energetically stable, we show that strong density wave fluctuations result in an additional contribution to the free energy of a superconductor with multicomponent order parameters, which generally favors nematic superconductivity. Our theory …
The spin$-1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb bilayer lattice is shown to display a rich variety of semiclassical and genuinely quantum phases, controlled by the interplay between intralayer frustration and interlayer exchange. Employing a complementary set of techniques, comprising spin rotationally invariant Schwinger boson mean field theory, bond operators, and series expansions we unveil the quantum phase diagram, analyzing low-energy excitations and order parameters. By virtue of Schwinger bosons we scan the complete range of exchange parameters, covering both long range orde…
We investigate twisted bilayer graphene near charge neutrality using a generalized Bistritzer-MacDonald continuum model, accounting for corrugation effects. The Fermi velocity vanishes for particular twist angles properly reproducing the physics of the celebrated magic angles. Using group representation theory, we identify all contact interaction potentials compatible with the symmetries of the model. This enables us to identify two classes of quartic interactions leading to either the opening of a gap or to nematic ordering. We then implement a renormalization group analysis to study the comp…
We study frustrated spin-1/2 dimer systems in two dimensions with a bilayer structure, where spins are ferromagnetically coupled in dimers. Our model includes frustrated two-spin exchange interactions as well as four-spin interaction. We pay particular attention to the spin nematic phase, which does not exhibit any magnetic (spin-dipole) order but has a spin-quadrupolar long-range order. Employing a perturbation calculation, a mean-field approximation, and a numerical many-variable variational Monte Carlo method, we determine ground-state phase diagrams on various two-dimensional lattices. It …
An anisotropic metallic phase dubbed electronic nematic phase bounded by two consecutive metamagnetic transitions has been reported in the bilayer ruthenate Sr3Ru2O7. It has also been shown that the nematic and the accompanying metamagnetic transitions are driven by an effective momentum-dependent quadrupole-type interaction. Here, we study the microscopic origin of such an effective interaction. To elucidate the mechanism behind the spontaneous Fermi surface distortion associated with the nematic, we identify a simple tight binding model based on t2g orbitals, spin-orbit coupling and the rota…
In the magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), one of the most remarkable observations is the $C_3$-symmetry-breaking nematic state. We identify that the nematicity in MATBG is the $E$-symmetry ferro bond order, which is the modulation of correlated hopping integrals owing to the $E$-symmetry particle-hole pairing condensation. The nematicity in MATBG originates from prominent quantum interference among $SU(4)$ valley+spin composite fluctuations. This novel "valley + spin fluctuation interference mechanism" is revealed by the density wave equation analysis for realistic multiorbital Hubb…
We study the phase diagram of an effective model of competing nematic and antiferromagnetic orders of interacting electrons on the Bernal-stacked honeycomb bilayer, as relevant for bilayer graphene. In the noninteracting limit, the model features a semimetallic ground state with quadratic band touching points at the Fermi level. Taking the effects of short-range interactions into account, we demonstrate the existence of an extended region in the mean-field phase diagram characterized by coexisting nematic and antiferromagnetic orders. By means of a renormalization group approach, we reveal tha…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) develops large moiré patterns at small twist angles with flat energy bands hosting domes of superconductivity. The large system size and intricate band structure have however hampered investigations into the superconducting state. Here, using full-scale atomistic modelling with local electronic interactions, we find at and above experimentally relevant temperatures a highly inhomogeneous superconducting state with nematic ordering on both atomic and moiré length scales. The nematic state has a locally anisotropic real-valued d-wave pairing, with a nematic vector …
We show that unconventional nematic superconductors with multi-component order parameter in lattices with three-fold and six-fold rotational symmetries support a charge-$4e$ vestigial superconducting phase above $T_c$. The charge-$4e$ state, which is a condensate of four-electron bound states that preserve the rotational symmetry of the lattice, is nearly degenerate with a competing vestigial nematic state, which is non-superconducting and breaks the rotational symmetry. This robust result is the consequence of a hidden discrete symmetry in the Ginzburg-Landau theory, which permutes quantities…
Moiré materials such as magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) exhibit remarkable phenomenology, but present significant challenges for certain experimental methods, particularly scanning probes such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Typical STM studies that can image tens of thousands of atomic unit cells can image roughly ten moiré cells, making data analysis statistically fraught. Here, we propose a method to mitigate this problem by aggregating STM conductance data from several bias voltages, and then using the unsupervised machine learning method of gaussian mixture model clus…
We explore several classes of quadrupolar ordering in a system of antiferromagnetically coupled quantum spin-1 dimers, which are stacked in the triangular lattice geometry forming a bilayer. Low-energy properties of this model is described by an $\mathcal{S}=1$ hard-core bosonic degrees of freedom defined on each dimer-bond, where the singlet and triplet states of the dimerized spins are interpreted as the vacuum and the occupancy of boson, respectively. The number of bosons per dimer and the magnetic and density fluctuations of bosons are controlled by the inter-dimer Heisenberg interactions.…
Graphene-based moiré systems have attracted considerable interest in recent years as they display a remarkable variety of correlated phenomena. Besides insulating and superconducting phases in the vicinity of integer fillings of the moiré unit cell, there is growing evidence for electronic nematic order both in twisted bilayer graphene and twisted double-bilayer graphene (tDBG), as signaled by the spontaneous breaking of the threefold rotational symmetry of the moiré superlattices. Here, we combine symmetry-based analysis with a microscopic continuum model to investigate the structure of the n…
Compulsory Dirac multipoles in the bilayer perovskite Ca3Ru2O7 are absent in published analyses of experimental data. In a first step at correcting knowledge of the magnetic structure, we have analysed existing Bragg diffraction patterns gathered on samples held well below the Néel temperature at which A-type antiferromagnetic order of axial dipoles spontaneously develops. Patterns were gathered with neutrons, and linearly polarized x-rays tuned in energy to a ruthenium atomic resonance. Neutron diffraction data contains solid evidence of Dirac dipoles (anapoles or toroidal moments). No such c…
In bilayer graphene, the phase diagram in the plane of a strain-induced bare nematic term, ${\cal N}_{0}$, and a top-bottom gates voltage imbalance, $U_{0}$, is obtained by solving the gap equation in the random-phase approximation. At nonzero ${\cal N}_0$ and $U_0$, the phase diagram consists of two hybrid spin-valley symmetry-broken phases with both nontrivial nematic and mass-type order parameters. The corresponding phases are separated by a critical line of first- and second-order phase transitions at small and large values of ${\cal N}_0$, respectively. The existence of a critical end poi…
We analyze the phase diagram of the Bilayer graphene (BLG) at zero temperature and doping. Assuming that at the high energies the electronic system of BLG can be described within a weak coupling theory (consistent with the experimental evidence), we systematically study the evolution of the couplings with going from high to low energies. The divergences of the couplings at some energies indicates the tendency towards certain symmetry breakings. Carrying out this program, we found that the phase diagram is determined by microscopic couplings defined on the short distances (initial conditions). …
We report on a fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculation of interaction effects on the Moiré flat bands of twisted bilayer graphene, assuming that valley U(1) symmetry is respected. We use realistic band structures and interactions and focus on the charge neutrality point, where experiments have variously reported either insulating or semimetallic behavior. Restricting the search to orders for which the valley U(1) symmetry remains unbroken, we find three types of self-consistent solutions with competitive ground state energy (i) insulators that break $C_2 {\mathcal T}$ symmetry, includin…
We perform a comprehensive numerical study of d-wave Fermi surface deformations (dFSD) on a square lattice, the so-called d-wave Pomeranchuk instability, including bilayer coupling. Since the order parameter corresponding to the dFSD has Ising symmetry, there are two stacking patterns between the layeres, (+,+) and (+,-). This additional degree of freedom gives rise to a rich variety of phase diagrams. The phase diagrams are classified by means of the energy scale Lambda_{z}, which is defined as the bilayer splitting at the saddle points of the in-plane band dispersion. As long as Lambda_{z} n…
The interplay of spin-orbit-coupling and strong electronic correlations is studied for the single-layer and the bilayer compound of the strontium ruthenate Ruddlesden-Popper series by a combination of first-principles band-structure theory with mean-field rotationally invariant slave bosons. At equilibrium strongly renormalized (spin-orbit-split) quasiparticle bands are traced and a thorough description of the low-energy regime for the nearly ferromagnetic bilayer system in accordance with experimental data is presented. The metamagnetic response of Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ in finite magnetic field $…
Bilayer strontium ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ displays pronounced non-Fermi liquid behavior at magnetic fields around 8 T, applied perpendicular to the ruthenate planes, which previously has been associated with an itinerant metamagnetic quantum critical end point (QCEP). We focus on the magnetic Grüneisen parameter $Γ_{\rm H}$, which is the most direct probe to characterize field-induced quantum criticality. We confirm quantum critical scaling due to a putative two-dimensional QCEP near 7.845(5) T, which is masked by two ordered phases A and B, identified previously by neutron scattering. In …
We propose an SU(4) spin-valley-fermion model to investigate the superconducting instabilities of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). In this approach, bosonic fluctuations associated with an emergent SU(4) symmetry, corresponding to combined rotations in valley and spin spaces, couple to the low-energy fermions that comprise the flat bands. These fluctuations are peaked at zero wave-vector, reflecting the "ferromagnetic-like" SU(4) ground state recently found in strong-coupling solutions of microscopic models for TBG. Focusing on electronic states related to symmetry-imposed points of the Fermi s…
We analyze an effective model on a square lattice with two types of forward scattering interactions, which, respectively, drive ferromagnetism (FM) and electronic nematic order via a d-wave Pomeranchuk instability (dPI). The FM and dPI in general compete with each other and they are typically separated by a first order phase boundary in the plane of the chemical potential and temperature. Nevertheless there is a parameter region where the dPI occurs inside the FM phase, leading to their coexistence. We also study the effect of a magnetic field by choosing a chemical potential where the ground …
In an externally applied magnetic field, ultra-pure crystals of the bilayer compound Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ undergo a metamagnetic transition below a critical temperature, $T^*$, which varies as a function of the angle between the magnetic field $H$ and the Ru-O planes. Moreover, $T^*$ approaches zero when $H$ is perpendicular to the planes. This putative "metamagnetic quantum critical point", however, is preempted by a nematic fluid phase with order one resistive anisotropy in the {\it ab} plane. In a "realistic" bilayer model with moderate strength local Coulomb interactions, the existence of a s…
We theoretically study the correlated insulator states, quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) states, and field-induced topological transitions between different correlated states in twisted multilayer graphene systems. Taking twisted bilayer-monolayer graphene and twisted double-bilayer graphene as examples, we show that both systems stay in spin polarized, $C_{3z}$-broken insulator states with zero Chern number at 1/2 filling of the flat bands under finite displacement fields. In some cases these spin polarized, nematic insulator states are in the quantum valley Hall phase by virtue of the nontrivial…
We propose a lattice scale two-band generalized Hubbard model as a caricature of the electronic structure of twisted bilayer graphene. Various possible broken symmetry phases can arise, including a nematic phase (which is a form of orbital ferromagnet) and an orbital-triplet spin-singlet superconducting phase. Concerning the mechanism of superconductivity -- we propose an analogy with superconductivity in alkali-doped C$_{60}$ in which a violation of Hund's first rule plays a central role.
Charge-$4e$ superconductivity as a novel phase of matter remains elusive so far. Here we show that charge-$4e$ phase can arise as a vestigial order above the nematic superconducting transition temperature in time-reversal-invariant nematic superconductors. On the one hand, the nontrivial topological defect -- nematic vortex -- is energetically favored over the superconducting phase vortex when the nematic stiffness is less than the superfluid stiffness; consequently the charge-$4e$ phase emerges by proliferation of nematic vortices upon increasing temperatures. On the other hand, the Ginzburg-…
Nematic Fermi liquid arises when the system of interacting fermions spontaneously breaks the rotational symmetry while the translational symmetry is preserved. We consider a Nematic Fermi liquid of fermions with two distinct quantum numbers. Two quantum numbers represent the spin degrees of freedom or the layer degrees of freedom of the bilayer system. There are two director modes in this system: the in-phase and out-of-phase modes. We find that the out-of-phase (in-phase) mode mediates an attractive (repulsive) interaction between fermions with different quantum numbers. Pairing instability o…
We develop a theory for quantum phases and quantum multicriticality in bilayer graphene in the presence of an explicit energy gap in the non-interacting spectrum by extending previous renormalization group (RG) analyses of electron-electron interactions in gapless bilayer graphene at finite temperature to include the effect of an electric field applied perpendicular to the sample. We determine the possible outcomes of the resulting RG equations, represented by "fixed rays" along which ratios of the coupling constants remain constant and map out the leading instabilities of the system for an in…
We examine the effects of long-range dipolar forces on metamagnetic transitions and generalize the theory of Condon domains to the case of an itinerant electron system undergoing a first-order metamagnetic transition. We demonstrate that within a finite range of the applied field, dipolar interactions induce a spatial modulation of the magnetization in the form of stripes or bubbles. Our findings are consistent with recent observations in the bilayer ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$.
We report low-temperature thermal expansion measurements on the bilayer ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ as a function of magnetic field applied perpendicular to the Ruthenium-oxide planes. The field-dependence of the c-axis expansion coefficient indicates the accumulation of entropy close to 8 Tesla, related to an underlying quantum critical point. The latter is masked by two first-order metamagnetic transitions which bound a regime of enhanced entropy. Outside this region the singular thermal expansion behavior is compatible with the predictions of the itinerant theory for a two-dimensional metam…
Low-energy electronic structure of (unbiased) bilayer graphene is made of two Fermi points with quadratic dispersions, if trigonal-warping and other high order contributions are ignored. We show that as a result of this qualitative difference from single-layer graphene, short-range (or screened Coulomb) interactions are marginally relevant. We use renormalization group to study their effects on low-energy properties of the system, and show that the two quadratic Fermi points spontaneously split into four Dirac points, at zero temperature. This results in a nematic state that spontaneously brea…
The bilayer ruthenate Sr_3Ru_2O_7 has been cited as a textbook example of itinerant metamagnetic quantum criticality. However, recent studies of the ultra-pure system have revealed striking anomalies in magnetism and transport in the vicinity of the quantum critical point. Drawing on new experimental data, we propose that the anomalous phase behavior can be accommodated by a mechanism which relies on the effects of strong magnetoelastic coupling. We argue that the phenomenological theory identified here is more generic and raises the possibility of quantum tricritical behaviour.
For interacting 2D electrons in the presence of magnetic field at half filling, the system forms a `composite Fermi liquid(CFL)' with emergent Fermi surface and exhibits metallic behavior, based on the standard Halperin, Lee, and Read(HLR) field theory. Recently, Son introduces a composite Dirac theory as the low energy effective description of Half-filled Landau Level. Such theory exhibits particle-hole symmetry and the underlying composite Fermi surface displays a robust $π$ Berry phase. In this paper, we start from the bilayer Half-filled Landau Level system where the two composite Fermi su…
We use the DMRG to study the correlated electron states favored by the Coulomb interaction projected onto the narrow bands of twisted bilayer graphene within a spinless one-valley model. The Hilbert space of the narrow bands is constructed from a pair of hybrid Wannier states with opposite Chern numbers. Depending on the parameters in the BM model, the DMRG in this basis determines the ground state at one particle per unit cell to be either QAH state or a state with no Hall effect which is nearly a product state. Based on this form, we then apply the variational method to study their competiti…
