We perform a comprehensive numerical study of d-wave Fermi surface deformations (dFSD) on a square lattice, the so-called d-wave Pomeranchuk instability, including bilayer coupling. Since the order parameter corresponding to the dFSD has Ising symmetry, there are two stacking patterns between the layeres, (+,+) and (+,-). This additional degree of freedom gives rise to a rich variety of phase diagrams. The phase diagrams are classified by means of the energy scale Lambda_{z}, which is defined as the bilayer splitting at the saddle points of the in-plane band dispersion. As long as Lambda_{z} ne 0, a major stacking pattern is usually (+,-), and (+,+) stacking is stabilized as a dominant pattern only when the temperature scale of the dFSD instability becomes much smaller than Lambda_z. For Lambda_{z}=0, the phase diagram depends on the precise form of the bilayer dispersion. We also analyze the effect of a magnetic field on the bilayer model in connection with a possible dFSD instability in the bilyared ruthenate Sr_3Ru_2O_7.
Fermi surface of the two-dimensional t-J model is studied using the variational Monte Carlo method. We study the Gutzwiller projected d-wave superconducting state with an additional variational parameter t'_v corresponding to the next-nearest neighbor hopping term. It is found that the finite t'_v<0 gives the lowest variational energy in the wide range of hole-doping rates. The obtained momentum distribution function shows that the Fermi surface deforms spontaneously. It is also shown that the van Hove singularity is always located very close to the Fermi energy. Using the Gutzwiller approxima…
We have calculated the ground state wave functions for a systems of multicomponent interacting fermions. We show that it describes the state with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry. In the limit of an infinitely strong interaction it turns into a phase with a finite density of chiral complexes. The number of particles constituting a complex depends on the number of fermion components. For example, in the case of two component electrons (spin) the condensate is built of four-particle complexes consisting of two "right" electrons and two "left" holes with the opposite spins.
The most salient features observed around a metamagnetic transition in Sr3Ru2O7 are well captured in a simple model for spontaneous Fermi surface symmetry breaking under a magnetic field, without invoking a putative quantum critical point. The Fermi surface symmetry breaking happens in both a majority and a minority spin band but with a different magnitude of the order parameter, when either band is tuned close to van Hove filling by the magnetic field. The transition is second order for high temperature T and changes into first order for low T. The first order transition is accompanied by a m…
We investigate the stability of a quadratic band-crossing point (QBCP) in 2D fermionic systems. At the non-interacting level, we show that a QBCP exists and is topologically stable for a Berry flux $\pm 2π$, if the point symmetry group has either fourfold or sixfold rotational symmetries. This putative topologically stable free-fermion QBCP is marginally unstable to {\em arbitrarily weak} short-range repulsive interactions. We consider both spinless and spin-1/2 fermions. Four possible ordered states result: a quantum anomalous Hall phase, a quantum spin Hall phase, a nematic phase, and a nema…
We study a lattice model of interacting Dirac fermions in $(2+1)$ dimension space-time with an SU(4) symmetry. While increasing interaction strength, this model undergoes a {\it continuous} quantum phase transition from the weakly interacting Dirac semimetal to a fully gapped and nondegenerate phase without condensing any Dirac fermion bilinear mass operator. This unusual mechanism for mass generation is consistent with recent studies of interacting topological insulators/superconductors, and also consistent with recent progresses in lattice QCD community.
We study the spontaneous non-magnetic time-reversal symmetry breaking in a two-dimensional Fermi liquid without breaking either the translation symmetry or the U(1) charge symmetry. Assuming that the low-energy physics is described by fermionic quasiparticle excitations, we identified an "emergent" local $U(1)^N$ symmetry in momentum space for an $N$-band model. For a large class of models, including all one-band and two-band models, we found that the time-reversal and chiral symmetry breaking can be described by the $U(1)^N$ gauge theory associated with this emergent local $U(1)^N$ symmetry. …
The Fermi liquid approach is applied to the problem of spontaneous violation of the four-fold rotational point-group symmetry ($C_4$) in strongly correlated two-dimensional electronic systems on a square lattice. The symmetry breaking is traced to the existence of a topological phase transition. This continuous transition is triggered when the Fermi line, driven by the quasiparticle interactions, reaches the van Hove saddle points, where the group velocity vanishes and the density of states becomes singular. An unconventional Fermi liquid emerges beyond the implicated quantum critical point.
We study magnetic field effects on spontaneous Fermi surface symmetry breaking with d-wave symmetry, the so-called d-wave "Pomeranchuk instability''. We use a mean-field model of electrons with a pure forward scattering interaction on a square lattice. When either the majority or the minority spin band is tuned close to the van Hove filling by a magnetic field, the Fermi surface symmetry breaking occurs in both bands, but with a different magnitude of the order parameter. The transition is typically of second order at high temperature and changes to first order at low temperature; the end poin…
The two-component Fermi gas in a double-well trap is studied using the density functional theory and the density profile of each component is calculated within the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We show that the two components are spatially separate in the two wells once the repulsive interaction exceeds the Stoner point, signaling the occurrence of the ferromagnetic transition. Therefore, the double-well trap helps to explore itinerant ferromagnetism in atomic Fermi gases, since the spontaneous separation can be examined by measuring component populations in one well.
Spontaneous magnetization of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is discussed. It takes place for sufficiently high electron density (i.e. for a quantum fluid state) with $r_s<10$ which is quite beyond the condition of Wigner crystallization $(r_s>37)$ obtained by Tanatar and Ceperley. The effect essentially depends upon screening and disorder . The energy interval under the Fermi level where a spin polarization occurs as a function of electron density is computed. The spontaneous magnetic moment and a decrease of electron density of states (pseudo-gap) at the Fermi level are found.
We study spinless fermions with nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions ($t$-$V$ model) on the two-dimensional three-band Lieb lattice. At half-filling, the free electronic band structure consists of a flat band at zero energy and a single cone with linear dispersion. The flat band is expected to be unstable upon inclusion of electronic correlations, and a natural channel is charge order. However, due to the three-orbital unit cell, commensurate charge order implies an imbalance of electron and hole densities and therefore doping away from half-filling. Our numerical results show that below a …
Fermions with one and two Dirac nodes are coupled to in-plane phonons to study a spontaneous transition into the Hall insulating phase. At sufficiently strong electron-phonon interaction a gap appears in the spectrum of fermions, signaling a transition into a phase with spontaneously broken parity and time-reversal symmetry. The structure of elementary excitations above the gap in the corresponding phase reveals the presence of scale invariant parity breaking terms which resemble Chern-Simons excitations. Evaluating the Kubo formula for both models we find quantized Hall plateaux in each case,…
Bilayer Kondo systems present interesting models to illustrate the competition between the Kondo effect and intermoment exchange. Such bilayers can exhibit two sharply distinct Fermi liquid phases which are distinguished by whether or not the local moments participate in the Fermi sea. We study these phases and the evolution from one to the other upon changing Kondo coupling. We argue that an ordered state with spontaneous interlayer phase coherence generically intervenes between the two Fermi liquids. Such a condensate phase breaks a U(1) symmetry and is bounded by a finite-temperature Koster…
Gapless electronic systems containing topologically nontrivial Fermi points are sources of various topological insulators. Whereas most of these special band-crossing points are built in the electronic structure of the non-interacting lattice models, we show that a quadratic Fermi point characterized by a non-zero winding number emerges with a collinear triple-Q spin-density-wave state that arises from a perfectly nested but topologically trivial Fermi surface. We obtain a universal low-energy Hamiltonian for the quadratic Fermi point and show that such collinear orderings are unstable against…
We elucidate the close relationship between spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and the physics of excitonic instabilities in strongly correlated multiband systems. The underlying mechanism responsible for the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry in a many-body system is closely related to the Cooper-like pairing instability of interband particle-hole pairs involving higher order symmetries. Studies of such pairing instabilites have, however, mainly focused on the mean-field aspects of the virtual exciton condensate, which ignores the presence of the underlying collective Fer…
Using a simple three dimensional lattice four-fermion model we argue that massless fermions can become massive due to interactions without the need for any spontaneous symmetry breaking. Using large scale Monte Carlo calculations within our model, we show that this non-traditional mass generation mechanism occurs at a second order quantum critical point that separates phases with the same symmetries. Universality then suggests that the new origin for the fermion mass should be of wide interest.
An existence of predominant symmetrical spin configuration (spin polarised phase) and "diluted" density of states (pseudo-gap) in a layer under the Fermi level in a quantum wire is predicted. The condition of cross-over from non-polarised phase to polarised one was derived. The transition occurs for sufficiently low electron density in a wire and is accompanied by an acute decrease of electron density of states near the Fermi level. It may result in a corresponding decrease of conductance. A similar effect may exist in a two-dimensional electron gas.
Using the bosonization approach we study fermionic systems with a nonlinear dispersion relation in dimension d>2. We explicitly show how the band curvature gives rise to interaction terms in the bosonic version of the model. Although these terms are perturbatively irrelevant in relation to the Landau Fermi liquid fixed point, they become relevant perturbations when instabilities take place. Using a coherent state path integral technique we built up the effective action that governs the dynamics of the Fermi surface fluctuations. We consider the combined effect of fermionic interactions and ban…
A model demonstrating existence of a thermodynamically stable quantum time-space crystal has been proposed and studied. This state is characterized by an order parameter periodic in both real and imaginary times. The average of the order parameter over phases of the oscillations vanishes but correlation functions of two or more order parameters show non-decaying oscillations. An alternative interpretation of the results is based on a concept of an operator order parameter introduced for this purpose. The model studied here has been suggested previously, in particular, for describing the pseudo…
Behavior of doped fermions in $Z_2$ gauge theories for the quantum dimer and eight-vertex models is studied. Fermions carry charge and spin degrees of freedom. In the confinement phase of the $Z_2$ gauge theories, these internal symmetries are spontaneously broken and a superconducting or Neél state appears. On the other hand in the deconfinement-topologically-ordered state, all symmetries are respected. From the view point of the quantum dimer and eight-vertex models, this result indicates interplay of the phase structure of the doped fermions and background configuration of the dimer or the …
We present a variational Monte Carlo (VMC) study of spontaneous Fermi surface symmetry breaking in the t-J model. We find that the variational energy of a Gutzwiller projected Fermi sea is lowered by allowing for a finite asymmetry between the x- and the y-directions. However, the best variational state remains a pure superconducting state with d-wave symmetry, as long as the underlying lattice is isotropic. Our VMC results are in good overall agreement with slave boson mean field theory (SBMFT) and renormalized mean field theory (RMFT), although apparent discrepancies do show up in the half-f…
We study a chain of ferromagnetic nano-particles or ferromagnetic molecule/atoms on a substrate of fully gapped superconductors. We find that under quite realistic conditions, the fermion-number-parity symmetry $Z_2^f$ can spontaneously break. In other words, such a chain can realize a 1+1D fermionic topologically ordered state and the corresponding two-fold topological degeneracy on an open chain. Such a topological degeneracy becomes the so called Majorana zero mode in the non-interacting limit. More specifically, we find that $Z_2^f$ symmetry breaking or fermionic 1+1D topological order can…
We study two-component (or pseudo-spin-1/2) Bose or Fermi gases in one dimension, in which particles are convertible between the components. Through bosonization and numerical analyses of a simple lattice model, we demonstrate that, in such gases, a strong intercomponent repulsion induces spontaneous population imbalance between the components, namely, the ferromagnetism of the pseudo spins. The imbalanced phase contains gapless charge excitations characterized as a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and gapped spin excitations. We uncover a crucial effect of the intercomponent particle hopping on the …
We perform a variational Monte Carlo study on spontaneous d-wave form Fermi surface deformation ($d$FSD) within the three-band Hubbard model. It is found that the variational energy of a projected Fermi sea is lowered by introducing an anisotropy between the hopping integrals along the x and y directions. Our results show that the $d$FSD state has the strongest tendency at half-filling in the absence of magnetism, and disappears as the hole concentration increases to $n_h\approx 1.15$. This is qualitatively in agreement with the mean field analysis and the exact diagonalization calculation for…
Direct coupling between gapless bosons and a Fermi surface results in the destruction of Landau quasiparticles and a breakdown of Fermi liquid theory. Such a non-Fermi liquid phase arises in spin-orbit coupled ferromagnets with spontaneously broken continuous symmetries due to strong coupling between rotational Goldstone modes and itinerant electrons. These systems provide an experimentally accessible context for studying non-Fermi liquid physics. Possible examples include low-density Rashba coupled electron gases, which have a natural tendency towards spontaneous ferromagnetism, or topologica…
We use the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism and study the ground-state phases of trapped spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases in two dimensions. Our main finding is that the presence of a symmetric (Rashba type) spin-orbit coupling spontaneously induces counterflowing mass currents in the vicinity of the trap edge, i.e. $\uparrow$ and $\downarrow$ particles circulate in opposite directions with equal speed. These currents flow even in noninteracting systems, but their strength decreases toward the molecular BEC limit, which can be achieved either by increasing the spin-orbit coupling or the interactio…
Discoveries of ordered quantum states of matter are of great fundamental interest, and often lead to unique applications. The most well known example -- superconductivity -- is caused by the formation and condensation of pairs of electrons. A key property of superconductors is diamagnetism: magnetic fields are screened by dissipationless currents. Fundamentally, what distinguishes superconducting states from normal states is a spontaneously broken symmetry corresponding to long-range coherence of fermion pairs. Here we report a set of experimental observations in hole doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_…
The field-orientation dependent thermal conductivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt$_3$ was measured down to very low temperatures and under magnetic fields throughout three distinct superconducting phases: A, B, and C phases. In the C phase, a striking twofold oscillation of the thermal conductivity within the basal plane is resolved reflecting the superconducting gap structure with a line of node along the a axis. Moreover, we find an abrupt vanishing of the oscillation across a transition to the B phase, as a clear indication of a change of gap symmetries. We also identify extra tw…
We report on a mean-field study of spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry for Dirac fermions with contact interactions in the presence of chiral imbalance, which is modelled by nonzero chiral chemical potential. We point out that chiral imbalance lowers the vacuum energy of Dirac fermions, which leads to the increase of the renormalized chiral chemical potential upon chiral symmetry breaking. The critical coupling strength for the transition to the broken phase is slightly lowered as the chiral chemical potential is increased, and the transition itself becomes milder. Furthermore, we study th…
We investigate holographic fermions in uni-directional striped phases, where the breaking of translational invariance can be generated either spontaneously or explicitly. We solve the Dirac equation for a probe fermion in the associated background geometry. When the spatial modulation effect becomes sufficiently strong, we see a spectral weight suppression whenever the Fermi surface is larger than the first Brillouin zone. This leads to the gradual disappearance of the Fermi surface along the symmetry breaking direction, in all of the cases we have examined. This effect appears to be a generic…
We show that a first-order phase transition can take place in a metal in a strong magnetic field if an electron Landau level approaches the Fermi energy of the metal. This transition is due to the electron-phonon interaction and is characterized by a jump in magnetostriction of the metal. If there are several equivalent groups of charge carriers in the metal, a spontaneous symmetry breaking of the magnetostriction can occur when the Landau level crosses the Fermi energy, and this breaking manifests itself as a series of the structural phase transitions that change a crystal symmetry of the met…
The phase diagram of massless quantum electrodynamics in three space-time dimensions as a function of fermion flavor number $N$ exhibits two well-known phases: at large $N > N_c^{conf}$ the system is in a conformal gapless state, while for small $N < N_c^{χSB}$ the fermions are expected to develop a dynamical mass due to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. Using $ε$ expansion near the lower critical dimension of 2, as well as the recent results on the generalization of the $F$ theorem to continuous dimension, we show that $N_c^{conf} > N_c^{χSB}$. There is therefore an intermediate range of …
We introduce a lattice fermion model in one spatial dimension with supersymmetry (SUSY) but without particle number conservation. The Hamiltonian is defined as the anticommutator of two nilpotent supercharges $Q$ and $Q^\dagger$. Each supercharge is built solely from spinless fermion operators and depends on a parameter $g$. The system is strongly interacting for small $g$, and in the extreme limit $g=0$, the number of zero-energy ground states grows exponentially with the system size. By contrast, in the large-$g$ limit, the system is non-interacting and SUSY is broken spontaneously. We study…
