We prove that for a 7-dimensional manifold M with cylindrical ends the moduli space of exponentially asymptotically cylindrical torsion-free G_2 structures is a smooth manifold (if non-empty), and study some of its local properties. We also show that the holonomy of the induced metric of an exponentially asymptotically cylindrical G_2 manifold M is exactly G_2 if and only if its fundamental group is finite and neither M nor any double cover of M is homeomorphic to a cylinder.
We study gluings of asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangian submanifolds in asymptotically cylindrical Calabi--Yau manifolds. We prove both that there is a well-defined gluing map, and, after reviewing the deformation theory for special Lagrangians, prove that this gluing map defines a local diffeomorphism from matching pairs of deformations of asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangians to deformations of special Lagrangians. We also give some examples of asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangian submanifolds to which these results apply.
We study the deformations of an asymptotically cylindrical Cayley submanifold inside an asymptotically cylindrical Spin(7)-manifold. We prove an index formula for the operator of Dirac type that arises as the linearisation of the deformation map and show that if the Spin(7)-structure is generic, then there are no obstructions, and hence the moduli space is a smooth finite-dimensional manifold whose dimension is equal to the index of the operator of Dirac type. We further construct examples of asymptotically cylindrical Cayley submanifolds inside the asymptotically cylindrical Riemannian 8-mani…
We study a class of asymptotically cylindrical Ricci-flat Kähler metrics arising on quasiprojective manifolds. Using the Calabi--Yau geometry and analysis and the Kodaira--Kuranishi--Spencer theory and building up on results of N.Koiso for the case of compact manifolds, we show that under rather general hypotheses any `small' asymptotically cylindrical Ricci-flat deformations of asymptotically cylindrical Ricci-flat Kähler metrics are again Kähler, possibly with respect to a perturbed complex structure. We also find the dimension of the moduli space for these small deformations. In the class o…
We develop some consequences of the connection between Calabi-Yau structures and torsion-free $G_2$ structures on compact and asymptotically cylindrical six- and seven-dimensional manifolds. Firstly, we improve the known proof that matching asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau threefolds can be glued. Secondly, we give an alternative proof that the moduli space of Calabi-Yau structures on a six-dimensional real manifold is smooth, and extend it to the asymptotically cylindrical case. Finally, we prove that the gluing map of Calabi-Yau threefolds, extended between these moduli spaces, is a loc…
We construct examples of asymptotically cylindrical Riemannian 8-manifolds with holonomy group Spin(7). To our knowledge, these are the first such examples. The construction uses an extension to asymptotically cylindrical setting of Joyce's existence result for torsion-free Spin(7)-structures. One source of examples arises from `Fano-type' Kaehler 4-orbifolds with smooth anticanonical Calabi-Yau 3-fold divisors and with compatible antiholomorphic involution. We give examples using weighted projective spaces and calculate basic topological invariants of the resulting Spin(7)-manifolds.
We construct examples of exponentially asymptotically cylindrical Riemannian 7-manifolds with holonomy group equal to G_2. To our knowledge, these are the first such examples. We also obtain exponentially asymptotically cylindrical coassociative calibrated submanifolds. Finally, we apply our results to show that one of the compact G_2-manifolds constructed by Joyce by desingularisation of a flat orbifold T^7/Γcan be deformed to one of the compact G_2-manifolds obtainable as a generalized connected sum of two exponentially asymptotically cylindrical SU(3)-manifolds via the method given by the f…
We prove that a shrinking gradient Ricci soliton which agrees to infinite order at spatial infinity with one of the standard cylindrical metrics on $S^k\times \RR^{n-k}$ for $k\geq 2$ along some end must be isometric to the cylinder on that end. When the underlying manifold is complete, it must be globally isometric either to the cylinder or (when $k=n-1$) to its $\ZZ_2$-quotient.
We prove an analogue of the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem for asymptotically cylindrical Kähler manifolds: If $\mathscr{E}$ is a reflexive sheaf over an ACyl Kähler manifold, which is asymptotic to a $μ$-stable holomorphic vector bundle, then it admits an asymptotically translation-invariant protectively Hermitian Yang-Mills metrics (with curvature in $L^2_{\mathrm{loc}}$ across the singular set). Our proof combines the analytic continuity method of Uhlenbeck and Yau [UY86] with the geometric regularization scheme introduced by Bando and Siu [BS94].
In an earlier paper, we proved that, under certain hypotheses, the moduli space of an asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangian submanifold with fixed boundary of an asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau 3-fold is a smooth manifold. Here we prove the analogous result for an asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangian submanifold with moving boundary.
Asymptotically cylindrical Ricci-flat manifolds play a key role in constructing Topological Quantum Field Theories. It is particularly important to understand their behavior at the cylindrical ends and the natural restrictions on the geometry. In this paper we show that an orientable, connected, asymptotically cylindrical manifold (M,g) with Ricci-flat metric g can have at most two cylindrical ends. In the case where there are two such cylindrical ends then there is reduction in the holonomy group Hol(g) and (M,g) is a cylinder.
We prove the existence of Ricci flow starting from a class of metrics with unbounded curvature, which are doubly-warped products over an interval with a spherical factor pinched off at an end. These provide a forward evolution from some known and conjectured finite-time local singularities of Ricci flow, generalizing previous examples. The class also includes metrics with non-compact singular ends which become instantaneously compact. Furthermore, we prove local stability of the forward evolution, which allows us to glue it to other manifolds and create a forward evolution from spaces which ar…
Let $M$ be a complete Ricci-flat Kahler manifold with one end and assume that this end converges at an exponential rate to $[0,\infty) \times X$ for some compact connected Ricci-flat manifold $X$. We begin by proving general structure theorems for $M$; in particular we show that there is no loss of generality in assuming that $M$ is simply-connected and irreducible with Hol$(M)$ $=$ SU$(n)$, where $n$ is the complex dimension of $M$. If $n > 2$ we then show that there exists a projective orbifold $\bar{M}$ and a divisor $\bar{D}$ in $|{-K_{\bar{M}}}|$ with torsion normal bundle such that $M$ i…
Given an asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangian submanifold L in an asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau 3-fold X, we determine conditions on a decay rate gamma which make the moduli space of (local) special Lagrangian deformations of L in X a smooth manifold and show that it has dimension equal to the dimension of the image of H^1_{cs}(L,R) in H^1(L,R) under the natural inclusion map.
McLean proved that the moduli space of coassociative deformations of a compact coassociative 4-submanifold C in a G_2-manifold (M,phi,g) is a smooth manifold of dimension equal to b^2_+(C). In this paper, we show that the moduli space of coassociative deformations of a noncompact, asymptotically cylindrical coassociative 4-fold C in an asymptotically cylindrical G_2-manifold (M,phi,g) is also a smooth manifold. Its dimension is the dimension of the positive subspace of the image of H^2_cs(C,R) in H^2(C,R).
Let $D$ be a compact Kähler manifold with trivial canonical bundle and $Γ$ be a finite cyclical group of order $m$ acting on $\mathbb{C} \times D$ by biholomorphisms, where the action on the first factor is generated by rotation of angle $2π/m$. Furthermore, suppose that $Ω_D$ is a trivialisation of the canonical bundle such that $Γ$ preserves the holomorphic form $dz \wedge Ω_D$ on $\mathbb C \times D$, with $z$ denoting the coordinate on $\mathbb{C}$. The main result of this article is the construction of new examples of gradient steady Kähler-Ricci solitons on certain crepant resolutions of…
A concrete model for a 7-dimensional gauge theory under special holonomy is proposed, within the paradigm outlined by Donaldson and Thomas, over the asymptotically cylindrical G2-manifolds provided by Kovalev's noncompact version of the Calabi conjecture. One obtains a solution to the $G_2$-instanton equation from the associated Hermitian Yang-Mills problem, to which the methods of Simpson et al. are applied, subject to a crucial asymptotic stability assumption over the "boundary at infinity".
In an earlier paper, we proved that given an asymptotically cylindrical G_2-manifold M with a Calabi-Yau boundary X, the moduli space of coassociative deformations of an asymptotically cylindrical coassociative 4-fold C in M with a fixed special Lagrangian boundary L in X is a smooth manifold of dimension dim(V_+), where V_+ is the positive subspace of the image of H^2_{cs}(C,R) in H^2(C,R). In order to prove this we used the powerful tools of Fredholm Theory for noncompact manifolds which was developed by Lockhart and McOwen, and independently by Melrose. In this paper, we extend our result t…
We prove that the deformation theory of compactifiable asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau manifolds is unobstructed. This relies on a detailed study of the Dolbeault-Hodge theory and its description in terms of the cohomology of the compactification. We also show that these Calabi-Yau metrics admit a polyhomogeneous expansion at infinity, a result that we extend to asymptotically conical Calabi-Yau metrics as well. We then study the moduli space of Calabi-Yau deformations that fix the complex structure at infinity. There is a Weil-Petersson metric on this space which we show is Kähler. By p…
We consider the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_ν$ of torsion-free, asymptotically conical (AC) Spin(7)-structures which are defined on the same manifold and asymptotic to the same Spin(7)-cone with decay rate $ν<0$. We show that $\mathcal{M}_ν$ is an orbifold if $ν$ is a generic rate in the non-$L^2$ regime $(-4,0)$. Infinitesimal deformations are given by topological data and solutions to a non-elliptic first-order PDE system on the compact link of the asymptotic cone. As an application, we show that the classical Bryant-Salamon metric on the bundle of positive spinors on $S^4$ has no continuous d…
We study how a gluing construction, which produces compact manifolds with holonomy G_2 from matching pairs of asymptotically cylindrical G_2-manifolds, behaves under deformations. We show that the gluing construction defines a smooth map from a moduli space of gluing data to the moduli space of torsion-free G_2-structures on the glued manifold, and that this is a local diffeomorphism. We use this to partially compactify the moduli space of torsion-free G_2-structures, including it as the interior of a topological manifold with boundary. The boundary points are equivalence classes of matching p…
We review the spectral analysis and the time-dependent approach of scattering theory for manifolds with asymptotically cylindrical ends. For the spectral analysis, higher order resolvent estimates are obtained via Mourre theory for both short-range and long-range behaviors of the metric and the perturbation at infinity. For the scattering theory, the existence and asymptotic completeness of the wave operators is proved in a two-Hilbert spaces setting. A stationary formula as well as mapping properties for the scattering operator are derived. The existence of time delay and its equality with th…
We extend the study of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations on manifolds with ends of cylindrical type initiated by Chruściel and Mazzeo by finding a class of solutions to the fully coupled system on such manifolds. We show that given a Yamabe positive metric g, which is conformally asymptotically cylindrical on each end, and a 2-tensor K such that (tr K)^2 is bounded below away from zero and asymptotically constant, then we may find an initial data set (g',K') such that g' lies in the conformal class of g.
We study coassociative 4-folds N in R^7 which are asymptotically conical to a cone C with rate lambda<1. If lambda is in the interval [-2,1) and generic, we show that the moduli space of coassociative deformations of N which are also asymptotically conical to C with rate lambda is a smooth manifold, and we calculate its dimension. If lambda<-2 and generic, we show that the moduli space is locally homeomorphic to the kernel of a smooth map between smooth manifolds, and we give a lower bound for its expected dimension. We also derive a test for when N will be planar if lambda<-2 and we discuss e…
We develop the deformation theory of instantons on asymptotically conical $G_2$-manifolds, where an asymptotic connection at infinity is fixed. A spinorial approach is adopted to relate the space of deformations to the kernel of a twisted Dirac operator on the $G_2$-manifold and to the eigenvalues of a twisted Dirac operator on the nearly Kähler link. This framework is then used to calculate the virtual dimension of the moduli spaces of $G_2$-instantons on which several known examples live. One such example considered is the $G_2$-instanton of Günaydin-Nicolai, which lives on $R^7$. As an appl…
In this paper we continue our study of the Laplacian on manifolds with axial analytic asymptotically cylindrical ends initiated in~arXiv:1003.2538. By using the complex scaling method and the Phragmén-Lindelöf principle we prove exponential decay of the eigenfunctions corresponding to the non-threshold eigenvalues of the Laplacian on functions. In the case of a manifold with (non-compact) boundary it is either the Dirichlet Laplacian or the Neumann Laplacian. We show that the rate of exponential decay of an eigenfunction is prescribed by the distance from the corresponding eigenvalue to the ne…
We use an index-theoretic technique of Hitchin to show that the space of complete Riemannian metrics of nonnegative sectional curvature on certain open spin manifolds has nontrivial homotopy groups in infinitely many degrees. A new ingredient of independent interest is homotopy density of the subspace of metrics with cylindrical ends.
We study ancient mean curvature flows in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ whose tangent flow at $-\infty$ is a shrinking cylinder $\mathbb{R}^{k}\times S^{n-k}(\sqrt{2(n-k)|t|})$, where $1\leq k\leq n-1$. We prove that the cylindrical profile function $u$ of these flows have the asymptotics $u(y,ω,τ)= (y^\top Qy -2\textrm{tr}(Q))/|τ| + o(|τ|^{-1})$ as $τ\to -\infty$, where the cylindrical matrix $Q$ is a constant symmetric $k\times k$ matrix whose eigenvalues are quantized to be either 0 or $-\frac{\sqrt{2(n-k)}}{4}$. Compared with the bubble-sheet quantization theorem in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ obtained by Haslho…
We prove the existence of asymptotically cylindrical (ACyl) Calabi-Yau 3-folds starting with (almost) any deformation family of smooth weak Fano 3-folds. This allow us to exhibit hundreds of thousands of new ACyl Calabi-Yau 3-folds; previously only a few hundred ACyl Calabi-Yau 3-folds were known. We pay particular attention to a subclass of weak Fano 3-folds that we call semi-Fano 3-folds. Semi-Fano 3-folds satisfy stronger cohomology vanishing theorems and enjoy certain topological properties not satisfied by general weak Fano 3-folds, but are far more numerous than genuine Fano 3-folds. Als…
For an asymptotically hyperbolic metric on the interior of a compact manifold with boundary, we prove that the resolvent and scattering operators are continuous functions of the metric in the appropriate topologies.
McLean studied the deformations of compact special Lagrangian submanifolds, showing in particular that they come in moduli spaces whose dimension depends only on the topology of the submanifold. In this article we study the analogous problem for non-compact, "asymptotically conical" SL submanifolds, with respect to various "boundary conditions at infinity".
Let G be one of the Ricci-flat holonomy groups SU(n), Sp(n), Spin(7) or G_2, and M a compact manifold of dimension 2n, 4n, 8 or 7, respectively. We prove that the natural map from the moduli space of torsion-free G-structures on M to the moduli space of Ricci-flat metrics is open, and that the image is a smooth manifold. For the exceptional cases G = Spin(7) and G_2 we extend the result to asymptotically cylindrical manifolds.
In this paper, we prove the mean-convex neighborhood conjecture for neck singularities of the mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for all $n\geq 3$: we show that if a mean curvature flow $\{M_t\}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ has an $S^{n-1}\times \mathbb{R}$ singularity at $(x_0,t_0)$, then there exists an $\varepsilon=\varepsilon(x_0,t_0)>0$ such that $M_t\cap B(x_0,\varepsilon)$ is mean-convex for all $t\in(t_0-\varepsilon^2,t_0+\varepsilon^2)$. As in the case $n=2$, which was resolved by the first three authors in arXiv:1810.08467, the existence of such a mean-convex neighborhood follows fr…
We prove the existence of a large class of initial data for the vacuum Einstein equations which possess a finite number of asymptotically Euclidean and asymptotically conformally cylindrical or periodic ends. Aside from being asymptotically constant, only mild conditions on the mean curvature of these initial data sets are imposed.
This is a survey paper. We explain the known constructions for two geometrically different classes of examples of compact Riemannian 7-manifolds with holonomy G2. One method uses resolutions of singularities of appropriately chosen 7-dimensional orbifolds, with the help of asymptotically locally Euclidean spaces. Another method uses the gluing of two asymptotically cylindrical pieces and requires a certain matching condition for their cross-sections `at infinity'.
We show that asymptotically Schwarzschildean 3-manifolds cannot contain minimal surfaces obtained by perturbative deformations of a Euclidean catenoid, no matter how small the ADM mass of the ambient space and how large the neck of the catenoid itself. Such an obstruction is sharply three-dimensional and ceases to hold for more general classes of asymptotically flat data.
Biconformal deformations take place in the presence of a conformal foliation, deforming by different factors tangent to and orthogonal to the foliation. Four-manifolds endowed with a conformal foliation by surfaces present a natural context to put into effect this process. We develop the tools to calculate the transformation of the Ricci curvature under such deformations and apply our method to construct Einstein $4$-manifolds. One particular family of examples have ends that collapse asymptotically to ${\mathbb R}^2$.
As is well-known, the Witten deformation of the De Rham complex computes the De Rham cohomology. In this paper we study the Witten deformation on a noncompact manifold and restrict it to differential forms which behave polynomially near infinity. Such polynomial differential forms naturally appear on manifolds with a cylindrical structure. We prove that the cohomology of the Witten deformation acting on the complex of the polynomially growing forms can be computed as the relative cohomology of the manifold with respect to the negative remote fiber of the function. We show that the assumptions …
Let $X$ be a complex manifold and $S\hookrightarrow X$ be an embedding of complex submanifold. Assuming that the embedding is $(k-1)$-linearizable or $(k-1)$-comfortably embedded, we construct via the deformation to the normal cone a diffeomorphism $F$ from a small neighborhood of the zero section in the normal bundle $N_{S}$ to a small neighborhood of $S$ in $X$ such that $F$ is in a precise sense holomorphic to the $(k-1)$-th order. Using this $F$ we obtain optimal estimates on asymptotical rates for asymptotically conical Calabi-Yau metrics constructed by Tian-Yau. Furthermore, when $S$ is …
We study a particular class of open manifolds. In the category of Riemannian manifolds these are complete manifolds with cylindrical ends. We give a natural setting for the conformal geometry on such manifolds including an appropriate notion of the cylindrical Yamabe constant/invariant. This leads to a corresponding version of the Yamabe problem on cylindrical manifolds. We affirmatively solve this Yamabe problem: we prove the existence of minimizing metrics and analyze their singularities near infinity. These singularities turn out to be of very particular type: either almost conical or almos…
We prove positivity of energy for a class of asymptotically locally hyperbolic manifolds in dimensions $4\le n \le 7$. The result is established by first proving deformation-of-mass-aspect theorems in dimensions $n\ge 4$. Our positivity results extend to the case $n = 3$ when more stringent conditions are imposed.
The virtual dimensions of both framed and unframed SU(2) magnetic monopoles on asymptotically conic 3-manifolds are obtained by computing the index of a Fredholm extension of the associated deformation complex. The unframed dimension coincides with the one obtained by Braam for conformally compact 3-manifolds. The computation follows from the application of a Callias-type index theorem.
We prove positive mass theorem with angular momentum and charges for axially symmetric, simply connected, maximal, complete initial data sets with two ends, one designated asymptotically flat and the other either (Kaluza-Klein) asymptotically flat or asymptotically cylindrical, for 4-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory and $5$-dimensional minimal supergravity theory which metrics fail to be $C^1$ and second fundamental forms and electromagnetic fields fail to be $C^0$ across an axially symmetric hypersurface $Σ$. Furthermore, we remove the completeness and simple connectivity assumptions in th…
The Witten spinorial argument has been adapted in several works over the years to prove positivity of mass in the asymptotically AdS and asymptotically hyperbolic settings in arbitrary dimensions. In this paper we prove a scalar curvature rigidity result and a positive mass theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds that do not require a spin assumption. The positive mass theorem is reduced to the rigidity case by a deformation construction near the conformal boundary. The proof of the rigidity result is based on a study of minimizers of the BPS brane action.
