This paper is concerned with the connection between the properties of dielectric relaxation and ac (alternating-current) conduction in disordered dielectrics. The discussion is divided between the classical linear-response theory and a self-consistent dynamical modeling. The key issues are, stretched exponential character of dielectric relaxation, power-law power spectral density, and anomalous dependence of ac conduction coefficient on frequency. We propose a self-consistent model of dielectric relaxation, in which the relaxations are described by a stretched exponential decay function. Mathematically, our study refers to the expanding area of fractional calculus and we propose a systematic derivation of the fractional relaxation and fractional diffusion equations from the property of ac universality.
Amorphous solids or glasses are known to exhibit stretched-exponential decay over broad time intervals in several of their macroscopic observables: intermediate scattering function, dielectric relaxation modulus, time-elastic modulus etc. This behaviour is prominent especially near the glass transition. In this Letter we show, on the example of dielectric relaxation, that stretched-exponential relaxation is intimately related to the peculiar lattice dynamics of glasses. By reformulating the Lorentz model of dielectric matter in a more general form, we express the dielectric response as a funct…
We show that an interaction decaying as a stretched exponential function of the distance, $J(l)\sim e^{-cl^a}$, is able to alter the universality class of short-range systems having an infinite-disorder critical point. To do so, we study the low-energy properties of the random transverse-field Ising chain with the above form of interaction by a strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG) approach. We obtain that the critical behavior of the model is controlled by infinite-disorder fixed points different from that of the short-range one if $0<a<1/2$. In this range, the critical exponents calcu…
Interface fluctuations in disordered systems: Universality and non-Gaussian statistics
我们采用了一个功能重整化群来研究在$d=4-ε$尺寸的钉扎电位的存在下的接口。与以前的方法相反[D. S. Fisher,Phys. Rev. Lett.
The low temperature universal properties in disordered and amorphous solids are considered. We introduce a model that includes two types of two level systems (TLSs), which, based on their local symmetry, interact weakly or strongly with the phonon field. This accounts well for the experimental results, and addresses some long-standing questions: the nature of the TLSs; the smallness and universality of the phonon attenuation, and the energy scale of $3$K below which universality is observed. Our model describes disordered lattices; we also discuss its application to amorphous solids.
This thesis presents several aspects of the physics of disordered elastic systems and of the analytical methods used for their study. On one hand we will be interested in universal properties of avalanche processes in the statics and dynamics (at the depinning transition) of elastic interfaces of arbitrary dimension in disordered media at zero temperature. To study these questions we will use the functional renormalization group. After a review of these aspects we will more particularly present the results obtained during the thesis on (i) the spatial structure of avalanches and (ii) the corre…
We consider the localization properties of a lattice of coupled masses and springs with random mass and spring constant values. We establish the full phase diagrams of the system for pure mass and pure spring disorder. The phase diagrams exhibit regions of stable as well as unstable wave modes. The latter are of interest for the instantaneous-normal-mode spectra of liquids and the nascent field of acoustic metamaterials. We show the existence of delocalization-localization transitions throughout the phase diagram and establish, by high-precision numerical studies, that the universality of thes…
In this article we present numerical results of conduction in a disordered quasi-1D wire in the possible presence of magnetic impurities. Our analysis leads us to the study of universal properties in different conduction regimes such as the localized and metallic ones. In particular, we analyse the cross-over between universality classes occurring when the strength of magnetic disorder is increased. For this purpose, we use a numerical Landauer approach, and derive the scattering matrix of the wire from electron's Green's function.
Disordered 2D chiral fermions provide an effective description of several materials including graphene and topological insulators. While previous analysis considered delta correlated disorder and no ultraviolet cut-offs, we consider here the effect of short range correlated disorder and the presence of a momentum cut-off, providing a more realistic description of condensed matter models. We show that the density of states is anomalous with a critical exponent function of the disorder and that conductivity is universal only when the ultraviolet cut-off is removed, as consequence of the supersym…
We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics in the quantum Ising model with power-law interactions and positional disorder. For arbitrary dimension $d$ and interaction range $α\geq d$ we analytically find a stretched exponential decay of the global magnetization and ensemble-averaged single-spin purity with a stretch-power $β= d/α$ in the thermodynamic limit. Numerically, we confirm that glassy behavior persists for finite system sizes and sufficiently strong disorder. We identify dephasing between disordered coherent pairs as the main mechanism leading to a relaxation of global magnetization, wh…
It is now possible to study experimentally the combined effect of disorder and interactions in cold atom physics. Motivated by these developments we investigate the dynamics around the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in a one-dimensional (1D) Fermi gas with short-range interactions in a quasiperiodic potential by the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) technique. By tuning disorder and interactions we study the MIT from the weakly to the strongly interacting limit. The MIT is not universal as time evolution, well described by a process of anomalous diffusion, depends q…
Two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermions are a central paradigm of modern condensed matter physics, describing low-energy excitations in graphene, in certain classes of superconductors, and on surfaces of 3D topological insulators. At zero energy E=0, Dirac fermions with mass m are band insulators, with the Chern number jumping by unity at m=0. This observation lead Ludwig et al [Phys. Rev. B 50, 7526 (1994)] to conjecture that the transition in 2D disordered Dirac fermions (DDF) and the integer quantum Hall transition (IQHT) are controlled by the same fixed point and possess the same universal cri…
Random constraint satisfaction problems (CSP) have been studied extensively using statistical physics techniques. They provide a benchmark to study average case scenarios instead of the worst case one. The interplay between statistical physics of disordered systems and computer science has brought new light into the realm of computational complexity theory, by introducing the notion of clustering of solutions, related to replica symmetry breaking. However, the class of problems in which clustering has been studied often involve discrete degrees of freedom: standard random CSPs are random K-SAT…
Amorphous solids, as well as many disordered lattices, display remarkable universality in their low temperature acoustic properties. This universality is attributed to the attenuation of phonons by tunneling two-level systems (TLSs), facilitated by the interaction of the TLSs with the phonon field. TLS-phonon interaction also mediates effective TLS-TLS interactions, which dictates the existence of a glassy phase and its low energy properties. Here we consider KBr:CN, the archetypal disordered lattice showing universality. We calculate numerically, using conjugate gradients method, the effectiv…
Disordered non-interacting systems are classified into ten symmetry classes, with the unitary class being the most fundamental. The three and four dimensional unitary universality classes are attracting renewed interest because of their relation to three dimensional Weyl semi-metals and four dimensional topological insulators. Determining the critical exponent of the correlation/localistion length for the Anderson transition in these classes is important both theoretically and experimentally. Using the transfer matrix technique, we report numerical estimations of the critical exponent in a U(1…
Amorphous solids, and many disordered lattices, exhibit a remarkable qualitative and quantitative universality in their acoustic properties at temperature $\lesssim 3$K. This phenomenon is attributed to the existence of tunneling two level systems (TTLSs), characterized by a homogenous density of states (DOS) at energies much lower than the disorder energy ($\approx 0.1$eV). Here we calculate numerically, from first principles, the DOS of KBr:CN glass, the archetypal disordered lattice showing universality. In contrast to the standard tunneling model, we find that the DOS diminishes abruptly a…
We study spectral properties and the dynamics after a quench of one-dimensional spinless fermions with short-range interactions and long-range random hopping. We show that a sufficiently fast decay of the hopping term promotes localization effects at finite temperature, which prevents thermalization even if the classical motion is chaotic. For slower decays, we find that thermalization does occur. However, within this model, the latter regime falls in an unexpected universality class, namely, observables exhibit a power-law (as opposed to an exponential) approach to their thermal expectation v…
This work presents results of ab-initio simulations of continuous wave transport in disordered absorbing waveguides. Wave interference effects cause deviations from diffusive picture of wave transport and make the diffusion coefficient position- and absorption-dependent. As a consequence, the true limit of a zero diffusion coefficient is never reached in an absorbing random medium of infinite size, instead, the diffusion coefficient saturates at some finite constant value. Transition to this absorption-limited diffusion exhibits a universality which can be captured within the framework of the …
