We consider discrete nonlinear hyperbolic equations on quad-graphs, in particular on the square lattice. The fields are associated to the vertices and an equation Q(x_1,x_2,x_3,x_4)=0 relates four fields at one quad. Integrability of equations is understood as 3D-consistency. The latter is a possibility to consistently impose equations of the same type on all the faces of a three-dimensional cube. This allows to set these equations also on multidimensional lattices Z^N. We classify integrable equations with complex fields x, and Q affine-linear with respect to all arguments. The method is based on analysis of singular solutions.
A complete list of nonlinear one-field hyperbolic equations having generalized integrable x- and y-symmetries of the third order is presented. The list includes both sin-Gordon type equations and equations linearizable by differential substitutions.
The complete lists of vector hyperbolic equations on the sphere that have integrable third order vector isotropic and anisotropic symmetries are presented. Several new integrable hyperbolic vector models are found. By their integrability we mean the existence of vector Backlund transformations depending on a parameter. For all new equations such transformations are constructed.
A method of integrable discretization of the Liouville type nonlinear partial differential equations is suggested based on integrals. New examples of discrete Liouville type models are presented.
We assign some kind of invariant manifolds to a given integrable PDE (its discrete or semi-discrete variant). First, we linearize the equation around its arbitrary solution $u$. Then we construct a differential (respectively, difference) equation compatible with the linearized equation for any choice of $u$. This equation defines a surface called a generalized invariant manifold. In a sense, the manifold generalizes the symmetry, which is also a solution to the linearized equation. In this paper, we concentrate on continuous and discrete models of hyperbolic type. It is known that such kind eq…
Monopoles on hyperbolic 3-space were introduced by Atiyah in 1984. This article describes two integrable systems which are closely related to hyperbolic monopoles: a one-dimensional lattice equation (the Braam-Austin or discrete Nahm equation), and a soliton system in (2+1)-dimensional anti-deSitter space-time.
The problem of discretization of Darboux integrable equations is considered. Given a Darboux integrable continuous equation, one can obtain a Darboux integrable differential-discrete equation, using the integrals of the continuous equation. In the present paper, the discretization of the differential-discrete equations is done using the corresponding characteristic algebras. New examples of integrable discrete equations are obtained.
The examples are considered of integrable hyperbolic equations of third order with two independent variables. In particular, an equation is found which admits as evolutionary symmetries the Krichever--Novikov equation and the modified Landau--Lifshitz system. The problem of choice of dynamical variables for the hyperbolic equations is discussed.
KdV6 equation can be described as the Kupershmidt deformation of the KdV equation (see 2008, Phys. Lett. A 372: 263). In this paper, starting from the bi-Hamiltonian structure of the discrete integrable system, we propose a generalized Kupershmidt deformation to construct new discrete integrable systems. Toda hierarchy, Kac-van Moerbeke hierarchy and Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy are considered. The Lax representations for these new deformed systems are presented. The generalized Kupershmidt deformation for the discrete integrable systems provides a new way to construct new discrete integrable syst…
The Lie algebraic integrability test is applied to the problem of classification of integrable Klein-Gordon type equations on quad-graphs. The list of equations passing the test is presented containing several well-known integrable models. A new integrable example is found, its higher symmetry is presented.
A discrete analogue of the dressing method is presented and used to derive integrable nonlinear evolution equations, including two infinite families of novel continuous and discrete coupled integrable systems of equations of nonlinear Schrodinger type. First, a demonstration is given of how discrete nonlinear integrable equations can be derived starting from their linear counterparts. Then, starting from two uncoupled, discrete one-directional linear wave equations, an appropriate matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem is constructed, and a discrete matrix nonlinear Schrodinger system of equations is …
In the present paper we consider a discretization of hyperbolic systems of exponential type. We proved that, in the case of $2\times 2$ systems, the resulting semi-discrete system is Darboux integrable only if it corresponds to a Cartan matrix of a semi-simple Lie algebra.
We propose discrete mappings of second order that have a discrete analogue of Lyapunov function. The mappings are extensions of the integrable Quispel-Roberts-Thompson (QRT) mapping, and a discrete Lyapunov function of the mappings is identical to an explicit conserved quantity of the QRT mapping. Moreover we can obtain a differential and an ultradiscrete limit of the mappings preserving the existence of Lyapunov function. We also give applications of a mapping with an adjusted parameter, a probabilistic mapping and coupled mappings.
We present a method of constructing discrete integrable systems with crystallographic reflection group (Weyl) symmetries, thus clarifying the relationship between different discrete integrable systems in terms of their symmetry groups. Discrete integrable systems are associated with space-filling polytopes arise from the geometric representation of the Weyl groups in the $n$-dimensional real Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$. The "multi-dimensional consistency" property of the discrete integrable system is shown to be inherited from the combinatorial properties of the polytope; while the dynamics…
In the paper we continue to consider symmetries related to the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy. We derive symmetries for the integrable discrete nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchy and discrete AKNS hierarchy. The integrable discrete nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchy are in scalar form and its two sets of symmetries are shown to form a Lie algebra. We also present discrete AKNS isospectral flows, non-isospectral flows and their recursion operator. In continuous limit these flows go to the continuous AKNS flows and the recursion operator goes to the square of the AKNS recursion operartor. These discrete AKN…
A relation between semi-direct sums of Lie algebras and integrable couplings of lattice equations is established, and a practicable way to construct integrable couplings is further proposed. An application of the resulting general theory to the generalized Toda spectral problem yields two classes of integrable couplings for the generalized Toda hierarchy of lattice equations. The construction of integrable couplings using semi-direct sums of Lie algebras provides a good source of information on complete classification of integrable lattice equations.
In the article differential-difference (semi-discrete) lattices of hyperbolic type are investigated from the integrability viewpoint. More precisely we concentrate on a method for constructing generalized symmetries. This kind integrable lattices admit two hierarchies of generalized symmetries corresponding to the discrete and continuous independent variables $n$ and $x$. Symmetries corresponding to the direction of $n$ are constructed in a more or less standard way while when constructing symmetries of the other form we meet a problem of solving a functional equation. We have shown that to ha…
In the article the problem of the integrable classification of nonlinear lattices depending on one discrete and two continuous variables is studied. By integrability we mean the presence of reductions of a chain to a system of hyperbolic equations of arbitrarily high order integrable in the Darboux sense. Darboux integrablity admits a remarkable algebraic interpretation: the Lie-Rinehart algebras related to both characteristic directions corresponding to the reduced system of the hyperbolic equations have to be of finite dimension. A classification algorithm based on the properties of the char…
We establish connections between two cascades of integrable systems generated from the continuum limits of the Hirota-Miwa equation and its remarkable nonlinear counterpart under the Miwa transformation respectively. Among these equations, we are mainly concerned with the semi-discrete bilinear Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation which is seldomly studied in literature. We present both of its Casorati and Grammian determinant solutions. Through the Pfaffianization procedure proposed by Hirota and Ohta, we are able to derive the coupled integrable system for the semi-discrete KP equation.
A new integrable discrete system is constructed and studied, based on the algebraization of the difference operator. The model is named the discrete generalized nonlinear Schrodinger (GNLS) equation for which can be reduced to classical discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation. To show the complete integrability of the discrete GNLS equation, the recursion operator, symmetries and conservation quantities are obtained. Furthermore, all of reductions for the discrete GNLS equation are given and the discrete NLS equation is obtained by one of the reductions. At the same time, the recursion o…
We introduce a family of order $N\in \mathbb{N}$ Lax matrices that is indexed by the natural number $k\in \{1,\ldots,N-1\}.$ For each value of $k$ they serve as strong Lax matrices of a hierarchy of integrable difference systems in edge variables that in turn lead to hierarchies of integrable difference systems in vertex variables or in a combination of edge and vertex variables. Furthermore, the entries of the Lax matrices are considered as elements of a division ring, so we obtain hierarchies of discrete integrable systems extended in the non-commutative domain.
We investigate indeterminate points in discrete integrable system. They appear in singularity confinement phenomenon naturally. We develop a method to analyse indeterminate points of dynamical maps and using this method we clarify behaviour of indeterminate points of some integrable maps. As a result, (1) we determine their indeterminacy, (2) find they are `confined' by the map, and (3) obtain a periodicity condition of the map from indeterminate point. Finally, we propose a new type of entropy using the indeterminacy in conclusion.
Fordy and Xenitidis [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 50 (2017) 165205] recently proposed a large class of discrete integrable systems which include a number of novel integrable difference equations, from the perspective of $\mathbb{Z}_\mathcal{N}$ graded Lax pairs, without providing solutions. In this paper, we establish the link between the Fordy-Xenitidis discrete systems in coprime case and linear integral equations in certain form, which reveals solution structure of these equations. The bilinear form of the Fordy-Xenitidis integrable difference equations is also presented together with the assoc…
We study "circular net" (discrete orthogonal net) equations for angular data generalized by external spectral parameters. A criterion defining physical regimes of these Hamiltonian equations is the reality of Lagrangian density. There are four distinct regimes for fields and spectral parameters classified by four types of spherical or hyperbolic triangles. Non-zero external spectral parameters provide the existence of field-theoretical ground states and soliton excitations. Spectral parameters of a spherical triangle correspond to a statistical mechanics; spectral parameters of hyperbolic tria…
We constructed involutions for a Halphen pencil of index 2, and proved that the birational mapping corresponding to the autonomous reduction of the elliptic Painlevé equation for the same pencil can be obtained as the composition of two such involutions.
We present the Darboux transformations for a novel class of two-dimensional discrete integrable systems named as $\mathbb{Z}_\mathcal{N}$ graded discrete integrable systems, which were firstly proposed by Fordy and Xenitidis within the framework of $\mathbb{Z}_\mathcal{N}$ graded discrete Lax pairs very recently. In this paper, the $\mathbb{Z}_\mathcal{N}$ graded discrete equations in coprime case and their corresponding Lax pairs are derived from the discrete Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchy by applying a transformation of the independent variables. The construction of the Darboux tranformations is r…
We present a general method of folding an integrable spin chain, defined on a line, to obtain an integrable open spin chain, defined on a half-line. We illustrate our method through two fundamental models with sl(2) Lie algebra symmetry: the Heisenberg XXX and the Inozemtsev hyperbolic spin chains. We obtain new long-range boundary Hamiltonians and demonstrate that they exhibit Yangian symmetries, thus ensuring integrability of the models we obtain. The method presented provides a "bottom-up" approach for constructing integrable boundaries and can be applied to any spin chain model.
We consider a discrete equation, defined on the two-dimensional square lattice, which is linearizable, namely, of the Burgers type and depends on a parameter $α$. For any natural number $N$ we choose $α$ so that the equation becomes Darboux integrable and the minimal orders of its first integrals in both directions are greater or equal than $N$.
A consistent set of six integrable discrete and continuous dynamical systems are suggested corresponding to arbitrary affine Lie algebra. The set contains a system of partial differential equations which can be treated as a version of generalized Toda lattice while semi-discrete systems in the set define the Backlund transform for this Toda lattice and the fully discrete representative of the set can be obtained as a superposition of such kind Backlund transforms. Four linear Zakharov-Shabat type systems taken pairwise realize Lax pairs for these six dynamical systems.
All Darboux integrable difference equations on the quad-graph are described in the case of the equations that possess autonomous first-order integrals in one of the characteristics. A generalization of the discrete Liouville equation is obtained from a subclass of these equation via a non-point transformation. The general proposition on the symmetry structure of the quad-graph equations is proved as an auxiliary result.
In a recent paper [TMP, 200:1 (2019), 966--984] by the authors, a series of integrable discrete autonomous equations on a square lattice with a non-standard structure of generalized symmetries is constructed. We build modified series by using discrete non-point transformations. We use both non-invertible linearizable transformations and non-point transformations invertible on solutions of the discrete equation. As a result, we get several series of new examples of discrete equations along with their generalized symmetries and master symmetries. The generalized symmetries constructed give new i…
The necessary and sufficient conditions for a hyperbolic semi-discrete equation to have five dimensional characteristic {\it x}-ring are derived. For any given chain, the derived conditions are easily verifiable by straightforward calculations.
A method of classification of integrable equations on quad-graphs is discussed based on algebraic ideas. We assign a Lie ring to the equation and study the function describing the dimensions of linear spaces spanned by multiple commutators of the ring generators. For the generic case this function grows exponentially. Examples show that for integrable equations it grows slower. We propose a classification scheme based on this observation.
We introduce the sub-lattice approach, a procedure to generate, from a given integrable lattice, a sub-lattice which inherits its integrability features. We consider, as illustrative example of this approach, the discrete Moutard 4-point equation and its sub-lattice, the self-adjoint 5-point scheme on the star of the square lattice, which are relevant in the theory of the integrable Discrete Geometries and in the theory of discrete holomorphic and harmonic functions (in this last context, the discrete Moutard equation is called discrete Cauchy-Riemann equation). We use the sub-lattice point of…
Group based moving frames have a wide range of applications, from the classical equivalence problems in differential geometry to more modern applications such as computer vision. Here we describe what we call a discrete group based moving frame, which is essentially a sequence of moving frames with overlapping domains. We demonstrate a small set of generators of the algebra of invariants, which we call the discrete Maurer--Cartan invariants, for which there are recursion formulae. We show that this offers significant computational advantages over a single moving frame for our study of discrete…
We classify all integrable 3-dimensional scalar discrete quasilinear equations Q=0 on an elementary cubic cell of the 3-dimensional lattice. An equation Q=0 is called integrable if it may be consistently imposed on all 3-dimensional elementary faces of the 4-dimensional lattice. Under the natural requirement of invariance of the equation under the action of the complete group of symmetries of the cube we prove that the only nontrivial (non-linearizable) integrable equation from this class is the well-known dBKP-system. (Version 2: A small correction in Table 1 (p.7) for n=2 has been made.) (Ve…
The discrete symmetry's dressing chains of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) and Davey-Stewartson equations (DS) are consider. The modified NLS (mNLS) equation and the modified DS (mDS) equations are obtained. The explicitly reversible Backlund auto-transformations for the mNLS and mDS equations are constructed. We demonstrate discrete symmetry's conjugate chains of the KP and DS models. The two-dimensional generalization of the P4 equation are obtained.
We give the basic definitions and some theoretical results about hyperdeterminants, introduced by A. Cayley in 1845. We prove integrability (understood as 4d-consistency) of a nonlinear difference equation defined by the 2x2x2-hyperdeterminant. This result gives rise to the following hypothesis: the difference equations defined by hyperdeterminants of any size are integrable. We show that this hypothesis already fails in the case of the 2x2x2x2-hyperdeterminant.
We consider differential-difference equations that determine the continuous symmetries of discrete equations on the triangular lattice. It is shown that a certain combination of continuous flows can be represented as a scalar evolution lattice equation of order 2. The general scheme is illustrated by a number of examples, including an analog of the elliptic Yamilov lattice equation.
We present the constraint for the discrete Moutard equation which gives the integrable discretization of the Bianchi-Ernst system. We also derive the discrete analogue of the Bianchi transformation between solutions of such a system (the Darboux-Backlund transformation in soliton terminology). We finally obtain the superposition of discrete Bianchi transformations.
We investigate self-similar solutions of the extended discrete KP hierarchy. It is shown that corresponding ansatzes lead to purely discrete equations with dependence on some number of parameters together with equations governing deformations with respect to these parameters. Some examples are provided. In particular, it is shown that the well known discrete first Painleve equation (dPI) and its hierarchy arises as self-similar reduction of Volterra lattice hierarchy which in turn can be treated as a reduction of the extended discrete KP hierarchy. It is written down equations which naturally …
A novel class of discrete integrable surfaces is recorded. This class of discrete O surfaces is shown to include discrete analogues of classical surfaces such as isothermic, `linear' Weingarten, Guichard and Petot surfaces. Moreover, natural discrete analogues of the Gaussian and mean curvatures for surfaces parametrized in terms of curvature coordinates are used to define surfaces of constant discrete Gaussian and mean curvatures and discrete minimal surfaces. Remarkably, these turn out to be proto-typical examples of discrete O surfaces. It is demonstrated that the construction of a Backlund…
A discrete version of the inverse scattering method proposed by Ablowitz and Ladik is generalized to study an integrable full-discretization (discrete time and discrete space) of the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The generalization enables one to solve the initial-value problem. Soliton solutions and conserved quantities of the full-discrete system are constructed.
Integrable discrete scalar equations defined on a~two or a three dimensional lattice can be rewritten as difference systems in bond variables or in face variables respectively. Both the difference systems in bond variables and the difference systems in face variables can be regarded as vector versions of the original equations. As a result, we link some of the discrete equations by difference substitutions and reveal the non-potential versions of some consistent-around-the-cube equations. We obtain higher-point configurations, including pairs of compatible six~points equations on the ${\mathbb…
In this article, by means of using discrete zero curvature representation and constructing opportune time evolution problems, two new discrete integrable lattice hierarchies with n-dependent coefficients are proposed, which related to a new discrete Schrödinger nonisospectral operator equation. The relation of the two new lattice hierarchies with the Volterra hierarchy is discussed. It has been shown that one lattice hierarchy is equivalent to the positive Volterra hierarchy with n-dependent coefficients and another lattice hierarchy with isospectral problem is equivalent to the negative Volte…
In the present paper, integrable semi-discrete and fully discrete analogues of a coupled short pulse (CSP) equation are constructed. The key of the construction is the bilinear forms and determinant structure of solutions of the CSP equation. We also construct Nsoliton solutions for the semi-discrete and fully discrete analogues of the CSP equations in the form of Casorati determinant. In the continuous limit, we show that the fully discrete CSP equation converges to the semi-discrete CSP equation, then further to the continuous CSP equation. Moreover, the integrable semi-discretization of the…
Elementary Darboux--Laplace transformations for semidiscrete and discrete second order hyperbolic operators are classified. It is proved that in the (semi)-discrete case there are two types of elementary Darboux--Laplace transformations as well: Darboux transformations that are defined by the choice of particular element in the kernel of the initial hyperbolic operator and classical Laplace transformations that are defined by the operator itself. It is proved that in the discrete case on the level of equivalence classes any Darboux--Laplace transformation is a product of elementary ones.
We consider a discrete classical integrable model on the 3-dimensional cubic lattice. The solutions of this model can be used to parameterize the Boltzmann weights of the different 3-dimensional spin models. We have found the general solution of this model constructed in terms of the theta-functions defined on an arbitrary compact algebraic curve. The imposing of the periodic boundary conditions fixes the algebraic curve. We have shown that in this case the curve coincides with the spectral one of the auxiliary linear problem. In the case when the curve is a rational one, the soliton solutions…
These lecture notes are devoted to the integrability of discrete systems and their relation to the theory of Yang-Baxter (YB) maps. Lax pairs play a significant role in the integrability of discrete systems. We introduce the notion of Lax pair by considering the well-celebrated doubly-infinite Toda lattice. In particular, we present solution of the Cauchy initial value problem via the method of the inverse scattering transform, provide a review of scattering theory of Jacobi matrices, and give the Riemann-Hilbert formulation of the inverse scattering transform. On the other hand, the Lax-Darbo…
We generalise the concept of duality to lattice equations. We derive a novel 3 dimensional lattice equation, which is dual to the lattice AKP equation. Reductions of this equation include Rutishauser's quotient-difference (QD) algorithm, the higher analogue of the discrete time Toda (HADT) equation and its corresponding quotient-quotient-difference (QQD) system, the discrete hungry Lotka-Volterra system, discrete hungry QD, as well as the hungry forms of HADT and QQD. We provide three conservation laws, we conjecture the equation admits N-soliton solutions and that reductions have the Laurent …
An algebraic definition of Gardner's deformations for completely integrable bi-Hamiltonian evolutionary systems is formulated. The proposed approach extends the class of deformable equations and yields new integrable evolutionary and hyperbolic Liouville-type systems. An exactly solvable two-component extension of the Liouville equation is found.
We study an integrable system related to the relativistic Toda lattice. The bilinear representation of this lattice is given and the Bäckulund transformation obtained. A fully discrete version is also introduced with its bilinear Bäcklund transformation and Lax pair. One-soliton solution of the discrete system is presented by use of Bäcklund transformation.
Models that remain integrable even in confining potentials are extremely rare and almost non-existent. Here, we consider a one-dimensional hyperbolic interaction model, which we call as the Hyperbolic Calogero (HC) model. This is classically integrable even in confining potentials (which have box-like shapes). We present a first-order formulation of the HC model in an external confining potential. Using the rich property of duality, we find multi-soliton solutions of this confined integrable model. Absence of solitons correspond to the equilibrium solution of the model. We demonstrate the dyna…
