A gravitating global k-monopole produces a tiny gravitational field outside the core in addition to a solid angular deficit in the k-field theory. As a new feature, the gravitational field can be attractive or repulsive depending on the non-canonical kinetic term.
We prove the existence of the gravitating BPS monopole in Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs (EYMH) theory. Existence is established using a Newtonian perturbation argument which shows that a Yang-Mills-Higgs BPS monopole solution can be be continued analytically in powers of $1/c^{2}$ to an EYMH solution.
The behaviour of magnetic monopole solutions of the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs equations subject to linear spherically symmetric perturbations is studied. Using Jacobi's criterion some of the monopoles are shown to be unstable. Furthermore the numerical results and analytical considerations indicate the existence of a set of stable solutions.
We present analytical and numerical results for static, spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein Yang-Mills Higgs equations corresponding to magnetic monopoles and non-abelian magnetically charged black holes. In the limit of infinite Higgs mass we give an existence proof for these solutions. The stability of the abelian extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes is reanalyzed.
We present a solution of the coupled Einstein and rank-two antisymmetric tensor field equations where Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken, and we discuss its observational signatures. Especially, the deflection angles have important qualitative differences between tensor and scalar monopoles. If a monopole were to be detected, it would be discriminated whether or not to correspond to a tensor one. This phenomenon might open up new direction in the search of Lorentz violation with future astrophysical observations.
We have constructed, numerically, both regular and black hole static solutions to the simplest possible gravitating Yang-Mills--Higgs (YMH) in $4p$ spacetime dimensions. The YMH systems consist of $2p-$th power curvature fields without a Higgs potential. The gravitational systems consist of the `Ricci scalar' of the $p-$th power of the Riemann curvature. In 4 spacetime dimensions this is the usual Einstein-YMH (EYMH) studied in \cite{Breitenlohner:1991aa, Breitenlohner:1994di}, whose qualitative results we emulate exactly.
Orbits of test particles and light rays are an important tool to study the properties of space-time metrics. Here we systematically study the properties of the gravitational field of a globally regular magnetic monopole in terms of the geodesics of test particles and light. The gravitational field depends on two dimensionless parameters, defined as ratios of the characteristic mass scales present. For critical values of these parameters the resulting metric coefficients develop a singular behavior, which has profound influence on the properties of the resulting space-time and which is clearly …
We point out a problem with the stability of composite (global-magnetic) monopoles recently proposed by J. Spinelly, U. de Freitas and E.R. Bezerra de Mello [Phys. Rev. D66, 024018 (2002)].
We find a self-gravitating monopole and its black hole solution in Brans-Dicke theory. We mainly discuss the properties of these solutions in the Einstein frame and compare the solutions with those in general relativity.
We show that gravity cures the infra-red divergence of the Yang monopole when a proper definition of conserved quantities in curved backgrounds is used, i.e. the gravitating Yang monopole in cosmological Einstein theory has a finite mass in generic even dimensions (including time). In addition, we find exact Yang-monopole type solutions in the cosmological Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Yang-Mills theory and briefly discuss their properties.
We find static spherically symmetric monopoles in Einstein-Born-Infeld-Higgs model in 3+1 dimensions. The solutions exist only when a parameter $\a $ (related to the strength of Gravitational interaction) does not exceed certain critical value. We also discuss magnetically charged non Abelian black holes in this model. We analyse these solutions numerically.
We construct dyons, and electrically charged monopole-antimonopole pairs and vortex rings in Yang-Mills-Higgs theory coupled to Einstein gravity. The solutions are stationary, axially symmetric and asymptotically flat. The dyons with magnetic charge $n\ge 2$ represent non-static solutions with vanishing angular momentum. The electrically charged monopole-antimonopole pairs and vortex rings, in contrast, possess vanishing magnetic charge, but finite angular momentum, equaling $n$ times their electric charge.
We review some recent results concerning the properties of a spherically symmetric global monopole in $(D=d+2)$-dimensional general relativity. Some common features of monopole solutions are found independently of the choice of the symmetry-breaking potential. Thus, the solutions show six types of qualitative behavior and can contain at most one simple horizon. For the standard Mexican hat potential, we analytically find the $D$-dependent range of $γ$ (the gravitational field strength parameter) in which there exist globally regular solutions with a monotonically growing Higgs field, containin…
The gravitating Julia-Zee dyon is a particle-like solution with both electric and magnetic charge. It is found in the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system of SU(2) with a scalar field in the adjoint representation coupled to gravity. Within the magnetic ansatz this system is reduced from describing dyons to describing the gravitating 't Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopole. The stability of the well-known static gravitating magnetic monopole solutions with respect to perturbations within the magnetic ansatz--so-called magnetic perturbations--is well studied, but their stability with respect to perturb…
A magnetic-monopole solution of a non-Abelian gauge theory as proposed by 't Hooft and Polyakov is studied in the Vaidya spacetime. We find that the solutions of Einstein equations generates a geometry of the Bonnor-Vaidya corresponding to magnetically charged null fluid with Higgs field contributing a cosmological term. In the absence of the scalar fields the corresponding Wu-Yang solution of the gauge theory still generates the Bonnor-Vaidya geometry, but with no cosmological term.
Spontaneous global symmetry breaking of O(3) scalar field gives rise to point-like topological defects, global monopoles. By taking into account self-gravity,the qualitative feature of the global monopole solutions depends on the vacuum expectation value v of the scalar field. When v < sqrt{1 / 8 pi}, there are global monopole solutions which have a deficit solid angle defined at infinity. When sqrt{1 / 8 pi} <= v < sqrt{3 / 8 pi}, there are global monopole solutions with the cosmological horizon, which we call the supermassive global monopole. When v >= sqrt{3 / 8 pi}, there is no nontrivial …
We present new classical solutions of Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory, representing gravitating sphaleron-antisphaleron pair, chain and vortex ring solutions. In these static axially symmetric solutions, the Higgs field vanishes on isolated points on the symmetry axis, or on rings centered around the symmetry axis. We compare these solutions to gravitating monopole-antimonopole systems, associating monopole-antimonopole pairs with sphalerons.
According to previous work on magnetic monopoles, static regular solutions are nonexistent if the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field $η$ is larger than a critical value $η_{\rm cr}$, which is of the order of the Planck mass. In order to understand the properties of monopoles for $η>η_{\rm cr}$, we investigate their dynamics numerically. If $η$ is large enough ($\ggη_{\rm cr}$), a monopole expands exponentially and a wormhole structure appears around it, regardless of coupling constants and initial configuration. If $η$ is around $η_{\rm cr}$, there are three types of solutions, depend…
I study type II critical collapse in the spherically symmetric gravitating magnetic monopole system. This is an Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system with two matter fields: a field parametrizing the scalar field gauged under SU(2) and a field parametrizing the gauge field. This system offers interesting differences compared to what is commonly found for type II collapse in other systems. For example, instead of the critical solution sitting between collapse and complete dispersal of the matter fields, on the non-black hole side of the critical solution, the matter fields settle down to a static an…
The stability of a spherically symmetric self-gravitating magnetic monopole is examined in the thin wall approximation: modeling the interior false vacuum as a region of de Sitter space; the exterior as an asymptotically flat region of the Reissner-Nordström geometry; and the boundary separating the two as a charged domain wall. There remains only to determine how the wall gets embedded in these two geometries. In this approximation, the ratio $k$ of the false vacuum to surface energy densities is a measure of the symmetry breaking scale $η$. Solutions are characterized by this ratio, the char…
We construct monopole-antimonopole chain and vortex solutions in Yang-Mills-Higgs theory coupled to Einstein gravity. The solutions are static, axially symmetric and asymptotically flat. They are characterized by two integers (m,n) where m is related to the polar angle and n to the azimuthal angle. Solutions with n=1 and n=2 correspond to chains of m monopoles and antimonopoles. Here the Higgs field vanishes at m isolated points along the symmetry axis. Larger values of n give rise to vortex solutions, where the Higgs field vanishes on one or more rings, centered around the symmetry axis. When…
Multidimensional configurations with Minkowski external space-time and a spherical global monopole in extra dimensions are discussed in the context of the brane world concept. The monopole is formed with a hedgehog-like set of scalar fields ϕ^i with a symmetry-breaking potential V depending on the magnitude ϕ^2 = ϕ^i ϕ^i. All possible kinds of globally regular configurations are singled out without specifying the shape of V(ϕ). These variants are governed by the maximum value ϕ_m of the scalar field, characterizing the energy scale of symmetry breaking. If ϕ_m < ϕ_cr (where ϕ_cr is a critical …
Gravitating monopoles and dyons in Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) or Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs (EYMH) systems have been extensively studied for various curved spacetimes, including those of black holes. We construct dyonic solutions of the EYMH theory in Vaidya spacetime using a set of generalized Julia-Zee ansatz for the fields. It is found that the dyonic charge is static in nature and it does not contribute to the energy of the null dust.
The pure $R^2$ gravity is equivalent to Einstein gravity with cosmological constant and a massless scalar field and it further possesses the so-called restricted Weyl symmetry which is a symmetry larger than scale symmetry. To incorporate matter, we consider a restricted Weyl invariant action composed of pure $R^2$ gravity, SU(2) Yang-Mills fields and a non-minimally coupled massless Higgs field (a triplet of scalars). When the restricted Weyl symmetry is spontaneously broken, it is equivalent to an Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs (EYMH) action with a cosmological constant and a massive Higgs non-mi…
A gravitating global monopole produces a repulsive grativational field outside the core in addition to a solid angular deficit in the Brans-Dicke theory. As a new feature, the angular deficit is dependent on the values of ϕ_{\infty} and ω, where ϕ_{\infty} is asymptotic value of scalar field in space-like infinity and ωis the Brans-Dicke parameter.
We present an exact solution to the non-linear equation which describes a global monopole in the flat space. We re-examine the metric and the geodesics outside the global monopole. We will see that a global monopole produces a repulsive gravitational field outside the core in addition to a solid angular deficit. The lensing property of the global monopole and the global monopole-antimonopole annihilation mechanism are studied.
A global monopole in dilatonic Einstein-Cartan gravity is presented. A linearized solution representing a global monopole interacting with a massless dilaton is found where Cartan torsion does not interact with the monopole Higgs field.Computation of the geodesic equation shows that the monopole-dilaton system generates a repulsive gravitational field. The solution is shown to break the linear approximation for certain values of torsion.
Recent progress in the study of solitons and black holes in non-Abelian field theories coupled to gravity is reviewed. New topics include gravitational binding of monopoles, black holes with non-trivial topology, Lue-Weinberg bifurcation, asymptotically AdS lumps, solutions to the Freedman-Schwarz model with applications to holography, non-Abelian Born-Infeld solutions
We study the shadow cast by a large gravitating sphere, similar to our Sun. For this, we consider the gravitational field produced by a static mass monopole within the first post-Newtonian approximation of the general theory of relativity. We study the propagation of a monochromatic electromagnetic wave in the vicinity of a large, opaque, gravitating sphere. To treat the opaque nature of the body and its physical size, we implement fully absorbing boundary conditions and develop a wave-optical treatment of the shadow formed by this object. Based on this approach, we demonstrate that the struct…
We present an exact solution around global monopole resulting from the breaking of a global S0(3) symmetry in a five dimensional space time. We have shown that the global monopole in higher dimensional space time exerts gravitational force which is attractive in nature. It is also shown that the space around global monopole has a deficit solid angle. Finally, we study monopole in higher dimensional space time within the framework of Lyra geometry.
We investigate the space-time of a global monopole in a five dimensional space-time in presence of the cosmological term. Also the gravitational properties of the monopole solution are discussed.
A class of non static solutions around a global monopole resulting from the breaking of a global S0(3) symmetry based on Lyra geometry are obtained. The solutions are obtained using the functional separability of the metric coefficients. We have shown that the monopole exerts attractive gravitational effects on test particles.
An example is described in which an asymptotically flat static vacuum Weyl space-time experiences a sudden change across a null hypersurface in the multipole moments of its isolated axially symmetric source. A light-like shell and an impulsive gravitational wave are identified, both having the null hypersurface as history. The stress-energy in the shell is dominated (at large distance from the source) by the jump in the monopole moment (the mass) of the source with the jump in the dipole moment mainly responsible for the stress being anisotropic. The gravitational wave owes its existence prrin…
A class of exact static solution around a global monopole resulting from the breaking of a global S0(3) symmetry is obtained in the context of Lyra geometry. Our solution is shown to possess an interesting feature like wormholes space-time. It has been shown that the global monopole exerts no gravitational force on surrounding non-relativistic matter.
We present a five dimensional global monopole within the framework of Lyra geometry. Also the gravitational field of the monopole solution has been considered.
In this paper, we show that the global monopole spacetime is one of the exact solutions of Einstein equations by means of the method treating the matter field as a non-linear sigma model, without the weak field approximation applied in the original derivation by Barriola and Vilenkin in 1989. Furthermore, we find the physical origin of the topological charge in the global monopole spacetime. Finally, we generalize the proposal which generates spacetime from thermodynamical laws to the case that spacetime with global monopole charge.
Using mainly analytical arguments, we derive the exact relation $η_{max}=\sqrt{3/8π}$ for the maximal vacuum value of the Higgs field for static gravitational global monopoles. For this value, the global monopole bifurcates with the de Sitter solution obtained for vanishing Higgs field. In addition, we analyze the stability properties of the solutions.
The gravitational weak field of a global monopole in the Einstein-Cartan theory of gravity is investigated. To obtain this solution we assume that Cartan torsion takes the form of the Newtonian gravitational potential. From the geodesics it is possible to show that the torsionic monopole produces a repulsive gravitational force.
In this paper we study the quantum tunneling of Dirac magnetic monopoles from the global monopole black hole under quantum gravity effects. We start from the modified Maxwell's equations and the Generalized Uncertainty Relation (GUP), to recover the GUP corrected temperature for the global monopole black hole by solving the modified Dirac equation via Hamilton-Jacobi method. Furthermore, we also include the quantum corrections beyond the semiclassical approximation, in particular, first we find the logarithmic corrections of GUP corrected entropy and finally we calculate the GUP corrected spec…
In order to study the phase transition through thermodynamic geometry, we consider the charged AdS black hole with global monopole. We first introduce thermodynamics of charged AdS black hole with global monopole by discussing the dependence of Hawking temperature, specific heat and P-v curve on horizon radius and monopole parameter. By implementing various thermodynamic geometry methods, for instance, Weinhold, Ruppiner, Quevedo and HPEM formulations, we derive corresponding scalar curvatures for charged AdS black hole with a global monopole. Here, we observe that, in contrast to Weinhold and…
In the present work, the gravitational field of a vacuum less global monopole has been investigated in Brans-Dicke theory under weak field assumption of the field equations. It has been shown that the vacuum less global monopole exerts attractive gravitational effects on a test particle. It is dissimilar to the case studied in general relativity.
In recent past, W.A.Hiscock [ Class.Quan.Grav. (1990) 7,6235 ] studied the semi classical gravitational effects around global monopole. He obtained the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor of an arbitrary collection of conformal mass less free quantum fields (scalar, spinor and vectors) in the space time of a global monopole. With this stress-energy tensor, we study the semi classical gravitational effects of a global monopole in the context of Brans-Dicke theory of gravity.
By applying 'Darmois-Israel formalism', we establish a new class of thin shell wormhole in the context of global monopole resulting from the breaking of a global O(3) symmetry. Since global monopole is asymptotically conical (no longer asymptotically flat), we call it as conical thin shell wormhole. Different characteristics of this conical thin shell wormhole, namely, time evolution of the throat, stability, total amount of exotic matter have been discussed.
The gravitational field of a global monopole in the context of Brans-Dicke theory of gravity is investigated. The space-time and the scalar field generated by the monopole are obtained by solving the field equations in the weak field approximation. A comparison is made with the corresponding results predicted by General Relativity.
We give arguments for the existence of ``radial excitations'' of gravitational global monopoles with any number of zeros of the Higgs field and present numerical results for solutions with up to two zeros. All these solutions possess a de Sitter like cosmological horizon, outside of which they become singular. In addition we study corresponding static ``hairy'' black hole solutions, representing black holes sitting inside a global monopole core. In particular, we determine their existence domains as a function of their horizon radius rh.
We investigate the deflection of light by a rotating global monopole spacetime and a rotating Letelier spacetime in the weak deflection approximation. To this end, we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the corresponding osculating optical geometries and show that the deflection of light increases due to the presence of the global monopole parameter and the string cloud parameter, respectively. The results obtained for the deflection angle in the equatorial plane generalize known results for the corresponding non-rotating global monopole and Letelier spacetimes as well as the Kerr solution.
The renormalized quantum stress energy tensor $\left<T_μ^ν\right>_{ren}$ for a massive spinor field around global monopoles is constructed within the framework of Schwinger-DeWitt approximation, valid whenever the Compton length of the quantum field is much less than the characteristic radius of the curvature of the background geometry. The results obtained shows that the quantum massive spinor field in the global monopole spacetime violates all the pointwise energy conditions.
In this paper, we study the dynamical properties of thermodynamic phase transition (PT) for the charged AdS black hole (BH) with a global monopole via the Gibbs free energy landscape and reveal the effects of a global monopole on the kinetics of the AdS BH thermodynamic PT. First, we briefly review the thermodynamics of the charged AdS BH with a global monopole. Then, we introduce the Gibbs free energy landscape to study the thermodynamic stability of the BH state. Because of thermal fluctuations, the small black hole (SBH) state can transit to the large black hole (LBH) state, and vice versa.…
We propose a geometric ansatz, a restriction on Euclidean / Minkowski distance in the embedding space being propotional to distance in the embedded space, to generate spacetimes with vanishing gravitational mass ($R_{ik} u^i u^k = 0, u_i u^i = 1 $). It turns out that these spacetimes can represent global monopoles and textures. Thus the ansatz is a prescription to generate zero mass spacetimes that could describe topological defects, global monopoles and textures.
In this paper, we investigate the Joule Thomson effects for AdS black holes with a global monopole. We study the effect of the global monopole parameter η on the inversion temperature and isenthalpic curves. The obtained result is compared with Joule Thomson expansion of van der Waals fluid and the equivalence were noted. Phase transition occuring in the extended phase space of this black hole is analogous to van der Waals gas. Our study shows that global monopole parameter η plays a very important role in Joule Thomson expansion.

We derive the metric for a Schwarzschild black hole with global monopole charge by relaxing asymptotic flatness of the Schwarzschild field. We then study the effect of global monopole charge on particle orbits and the Hawking radiation. It turns out that existence, boundedness and stability of circular orbits scale up by $(1-8 πη^2)^{-1}$, and the perihelion shift and the light bending by $(1-8 πη^2)^{-3/2}$, while the Hawking temperature scales down by $(1 - 8 πη^2)^2$ the Schwarzschild values. Here $η$ is the global charge.
In this paper we study the dynamics of trajectory of a spinning particle in a Schwarzschild spacetime involving a global monopole. We set up the equations of motion and find three types of trajectories. We study the conditions that a spinning particle, originally moving in the innermost stable circular orbit around the black hole involving a global monopole, will escape to infinity after it is kicked by another particle or photon. Three types of trajectories of a spinning particle in a Schwarzschild spacetime involving a global monopole are simulated in detail and the escaping energy and veloc…
Static solutions in spherical symmetry are found for gravitating global monopoles. Regular solutions lacking a horizon are found for $η< 1/\sqrt{8π}$, where $η$ is the scale of symmetry breaking. Apparently regular solutions with a horizon are found for $1/\sqrt{8π} \le η\alt \sqrt{3/8π}$. Though they have a horizon, they are not Schwarzschild. The solution for $η= 1/\sqrt{8π}$ is argued to have a horizon at infinity. The failure to find static solutions for $η> \sqrt{3/8π} \approx 0.3455$ is consistent with findings that topological inflation begins at $η\approx 0.33$.
In Brans-Dicke theory of gravity we explain how the extra constant value in the formula for rotation velocities of stars in a galactic halo can be obtained due to the global monopole field. We argue on a few points of the preceding Comment and discuss improvement of our model.
By application of the duality transformation, which implies interchange of active and passive electric parts of the Riemann curvature (equivalent to interchange of Ricci and Einstein tensors) it is shown that the global monopole solution in the Kaluza-Klein spacetime is dual to the corresponding vacuum solution. Further we also obtain solution dual to flat space which would in general describe a massive global monopole in 4-dimensional Euclidean space and would have massless limit analogus to the 4-dimensional dual-flat solution.
We resolve the entire gravitational field;i.e. the Riemann curvature into its electric and magnetic parts. In general, the vacuum Einstein equation is symmetric in active and passive electric parts. However it turns out that the Schwarzschild solution, which is the unique spherically symmetric vacuum solutions can be characterised by a slightly more general equation which is not symmetric. Then the duality transformation, implying interchange of active and passive parts will relate the Schwarzschlid particle with the one with global monopole charge. That is the two are dual of each-other. It f…
