We extend the calculable analytic approach to marginal deformations recently developed in open bosonic string field theory to open superstring field theory formulated by Berkovits. We construct analytic solutions to all orders in the deformation parameter when operator products made of the marginal operator and the associated superconformal primary field are regular.
We present an integrable deformation of the $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$ pure spinor action based on homological perturbation theory. Its equations of motion, Lax connection and BRST symmetry are discussed. The resulting model describes a pure spinor superstring in a generalized supergravity background.
We consider three-parameter Yang-Baxter deformations of the $AdS_5\times T^{1,1}$ superstring for abelian $r$-matrices which are solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation. We find two new backgrounds which are dual to the dipole deformed Klebanov-Witten gauge theory and to the nonrelativistic Klebanov-Witten gauge theory with Schrödinger symmetry
For supercosets with isometry group of the form $\hat{G} \times \hat{G}$, the eta-deformation can be generalised to a two-parameter integrable deformation with independent $q$-deformations of the two copies. We study its kappa-symmetry and write down a formula for the Ramond-Ramond fluxes. We then focus on $\hat{G}= PSU(1,1|2)$ and construct two supergravity backgrounds for the two-parameter integrable deformation of the $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ superstring, as well as explore their limits. We also construct backgrounds that are solutions of the weaker generalised supergravity equations o…
We find new homogeneous r matrices containing supercharges, and use them to find new backgrounds of Yang-Baxter deformed superstrings. We obtain these as limits of unimodular inhomogeneous r matrices and associated deformations of AdS2 x S2 x T6 and AdS5 x S5. Our r matrices are jordanian, but also unimodular, and lead to solutions of the regular supergravity equations of motion. In general our deformations are equivalent to particular non-abelian T duality transformations. Curiously, one of our backgrounds is also equivalent to one produced by TsT transformations and an S duality transformati…
We discuss a quantum deformation of the Green-Schwarz superstring on flat space, arising as a contraction limit of the corresponding deformation of AdS_5 x S^5. This contraction limit turns out to be equivalent to a previously studied limit that yields the so-called mirror model - the model obtained from the light cone gauge fixed AdS_5 x S^5 string by a double Wick rotation. Reversing this logic, the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring is the double Wick rotation of a quantum deformation of the flat space superstring. This quantum deformed flat space string realizes symmetries of timelike kappa-Poincare …
Working within the framework of both the $A_\infty$ and the Berkovits open superstring field theory, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for a Neveu-Schwarz marginal deformation to be exact up to third order in the deformation parameter. For a specific class of backgrounds, we find that this condition localizes on the boundary of the worldsheet moduli space, thus providing a very simple computational prescription for recovering algebraic constraints (generalized ADHM equations) which need to be satisfied by the moduli. Applying our results to the $\mathrm{D(-1)/D3}$ system, we confi…
The gravity dual of $β$-deformed ABJM theory can be obtained by a TsT transformation of $AdS_4\times\mathbb{CP}^3$. We present a supercoset construction of $\mathbb{CP}^3$ to obtain this gravity dual theory as a Yang-Baxter deformation. This is done by selecting a convenient combination of Cartan generators in order to get an Abelian $r$-matrix satisfying the classical Yang-Baxter equation. Our results provide another illustration of the relation between Abelian $r$-matrices and TsT transformations.
We present the construction of the $λ$-deformation of $AdS_5\times S^5$ superstring from the four dimensional Chern-Simons-type gauge theory. The procedure is applicable to all the semi-symmetric coset models and generalizes the previous construction of $λ$-deformation of the symmetric coset models.
We consider two integrable deformations of 2d sigma models on supercosets associated with AdS_n x S^n. The first, the "eta-deformation" (based on the Yang-Baxter sigma model), is a one-parameter generalization of the standard superstring action on AdS_n x S^n, while the second, the "lambda-deformation" (based on the deformed gauged WZW model), is a generalization of the non-abelian T-dual of the AdS_n x S^n superstring. We show that the eta-deformed model may be obtained from the lambda-deformed one by a special scaling limit and analytic continuation in coordinates combined with a particular …

Interesting deformations of AdS_5 x S^5 such as the gravity dual of noncommutative SYM and Schödinger spacetimes have recently been shown to be integrable. We clarify questions regarding the reality and integrability properties of the associated construction based on R matrices that solve the classical Yang-Baxter equation, and present an overview of manifestly real R matrices associated to the various deformations. We also discuss when these R matrices should correspond to TsT transformations, which not all do, and briefly analyze the symmetries preserved by these deformations, for example fi…
We recently proposed an integrable q-deformation of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring action. Here we give details on the hamiltonian origin and construction of this deformation. The procedure is a generalization of the one previously developed for deforming principal chiral and symmetric space sigma-models. We also show that the original psu(2,2|4) symmetry is replaced in the deformed theory by a classical analog of the quantum group U_q(psu(2,2|4)) with q real. The relation between q and the deformation parameter entering the action is given. The framework used to derive the deformation also enabl…
We construct a two-parameter deformation of the Metsaev-Tseytlin action for supercosets with isometry group of the form G x G. The resulting action is classically integrable and is Poisson-Lie symmetric suggesting that the symmetry of the model is q-deformed, U_q_L(G) x U_q_R(G). Focusing on the cases relevant for strings moving in AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 and AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1, we analyze the corresponding deformations of the AdS_3 and S^3 metrics. We also construct a two-parameter $q$-deformation of the u(1) + psu(1|1)^2 x u(1) x R^3-invariant R-matrix and closure condition, which underlie th…
The S-matrix on the world-sheet theory of the string in AdS5 x S5 has previously been shown to admit a deformation where the symmetry algebra is replaced by the associated quantum group. The case where q is real has been identified as a particular deformation of the Green-Schwarz sigma model. An interpretation of the case with q a root of unity has, until now, been lacking. We show that the Green-Schwarz sigma model admits a discrete deformation which can be viewed as a rather simple deformation of the F/F_V gauged WZW model, where F=PSU(2,2|4). The deformation parameter q is then a k-th root …
We build string backgrounds for Yang-Baxter deformations of the $AdS_4\times\mathbb{CP}^3$ superstring generated by $r$-matrices satisfying the classical Yang-Baxter equation. We obtain the metric and the NS-NS two-form of the gravity dual corresponding to noncommutative and dipole deformations of ABJM theory, as well as a deformed background with Schrödinger symmetry. The first two backgrounds may also be found by TsT transformations while for the last background we get a new family of non-relativistic ABJM theories with Schrödinger symmetry.
This article reviews the application of integrability to the spectral problem of strings on AdS_5 x S^5 and its deformations. We begin with a pedagogical introduction to integrable field theories culminating in the description of their finite-volume spectra through the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. Next, we apply these ideas to the AdS_5 x S^5 string and in later chapters discuss how to account for particular integrable deformations. Through the AdS/CFT correspondence this gives an exact description of anomalous scaling dimensions of single trace operators in planar N=4 supersymmetry Yang-Mills …
We test exact marginality of the deformation describing the blow-up of a zero-size D(-1) brane bound to a background of D3-branes by analyzing the equations of motion of superstring field theory to third order in the size. In the process we review the derivation of the instanton profile from string theory, extending it to include $α'$- corrections.
This is the second paper of a series of three. We construct effective open-closed superstring couplings by classically integrating out massive fields from open superstring field theories coupled to an elementary gauge invariant tadpole proportional to an on-shell closed string state in both large and small Hilbert spaces, in the NS sector. This source term is well known in the WZW formulation and by explicitly performing a novel large Hilbert space perturbation theory we are able to characterize the first orders of the vacuum shift solution, its obstructions and the non-trivial open-closed eff…
Deformations of complex structures by finite Beltrami differentials are considered on general Riemann surfaces. Exact formulas to any fixed order are derived for the corresponding deformations of the period matrix, Green's functions, and correlation functions in conformal field theories with vanishing total central charge. The stress tensor is shown to give a simple representation of these deformations valid to all orders. Such deformation formulas naturally enter into the evaluation of superstring amplitudes at two-loop order with Ramond punctures, and at higher loop order, in the supergravit…
The lambda deformation of the pure spinor formalism of the superstring in the $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$ background is introduced. It is shown that the deformation preserves the integrability as well as the one-loop conformal invariance of its parent theory. It is also shown that the effective action takes the standard form of the Berkovits-Howe action functional, allowing to calculate the deformed background supergeometry in a straightforward way. The background fields coincide with those of the lambda model of the Green-Schwarz formalism, hence satisfying the same set of supergravity equations of…
Given a family of world-sheet superconformal field theories related by marginal deformation, we can formulate superstring field theory based on any of these world-sheet theories. Background independence is the statement that these different superstring field theories are related to each other by field redefinition. We prove background independence of closed superstring field theory.
The purpose of this contribution is to initiate the study of integrable deformations for different superstring theory formalisms that manifest the property of (classical) integrability. In this paper we choose the hybrid formalism of the superstring in the background AdS_{2}xS^{2} and explore in detail the most immediate consequences of its lambda-deformation. The resulting action functional corresponds to the lambda-model of the matter part of the fairly more sophisticated pure spinor formalism, which is also known to be classical integrable. In particular, the deformation preserves the integ…
In this paper we find a host of boost operators for a very general choice of coproducts in AdS_3-inspired scattering theories, focusing on the massless sector, with and without an added trigonometric deformation. We find that the boost coproducts are exact symmetries of the R-matrices we construct, besides fulfilling the relations of modified Poincare' - type superalgebras. In the process, we discover an ambiguity in determining the boost coproduct which allows us to derive differential constraints on our R-matrices. In one particular case of the trigonometric deformation, we find a non-coasso…
Homogeneous Yang-Baxter (YB) deformation of AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ superstring is revisited. We calculate the YB sigma model action up to quadratic order in fermions and show that homogeneous YB deformations are equivalent to $β$-deformations of the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ background when the classical $r$-matrices consist of bosonic generators. In order to make our discussion clearer, we discuss YB deformations in terms of the double-vielbein formalism of double field theory. We further provide an O(10,10)-invariant string action that reproduces the Green-Schwarz type II superstring action up to quadr…
Based on the formulation of Yang-Baxter sigma models developed by Klimcik and Delduc-Magro-Vicedo, we explain that various deformations of type IIB superstring on AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ can be characterized by classical $r$-matrices satisfying the classical Yang-Baxter equation (CYBE). The relation may be referred to as `the gravity/CYBE correspondence.' We present non-trivial examples of the correspondence including Lunin-Maldacena backgrounds for $β$-deformations of the ${\cal N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory and the gravity duals for non-commutative gauge theories. We also discuss non-integrable…
We study the one loop renormalization group flow of the marginal deformations of N=4 SYM theory using the a-function. We found that in the planar limit some non-supersymmetric deformations flow to the supersymmetric infrared fixed points described by the Leigh-Strassler theory. This means supersymmetry emerges as a result of renormalization group flow.
We study exactly marginal deformations of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ CFTs dual to AdS$_4$ solutions in eleven-dimensional supergravity using generalised geometry. Focussing on Sasaki-Einstein backgrounds, we find that marginal deformations correspond to turning on a four-form flux on the internal space at first order. Viewing this as the deformation of a generalised structure, we derive a general expression for the four-form flux in terms of a holomorphic function. We discuss the explicit examples of S$^7$, Q$^{1,1,1}$ and M$^{1,1,1}$ and, using an obstruction analysis, find the conditions for the fir…
We show how so-called Yang-Baxter (YB) deformations of sigma models, based on an R-matrix solving the classical Yang-Baxter equation (CYBE), give rise to marginal current-current deformations when applied to the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model. For non-compact groups these marginal deformations are more general than the ones usually considered, since they can involve a non-abelian current subalgebra. We classify such deformations of the AdS(3) x S(3) string.
We apply exceptional generalised geometry to the study of exactly marginal deformations of $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs that are dual to generic AdS$_5$ flux backgrounds in type IIB or eleven-dimensional supergravity. In the gauge theory, marginal deformations are parametrised by the space of chiral primary operators of conformal dimension three, while exactly marginal deformations correspond to quotienting this space by the complexified global symmetry group. We show how the supergravity analysis gives a geometric interpretation of the gauge theory results. The marginal deformations arise from defor…
We present the Penrose limits of a complex marginal deformation of $AdS_5\times S^5$, which incorporates the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry of type IIB theory, along the $(J,0,0)$ geodesic and along the $(J,J,J)$ geodesic. We discuss giant gravitons on the deformed $(J,0,0)$ pp-wave background.
q-Deformation of the AdS5 x S5 Superstring S-matrix and its Relativistic Limit
