The essential operations of a quantum computer can be accomplished using solely optical elements, with different polarization or spatial modes representing the individual qubits. We present a simple all-optical implementation of Grover's algorithm for efficient searching, in which a database of four elements is searched with a single query. By `compiling' the actual setup, we have reduced the required number of optical elements from 24 to only 12. We discuss the extension to larger databases, and the limitations of these techniques.

I investigate whether it would technologically and economically make sense to build database search engines based on Grover's quantum search algorithm. The answer is not fully conclusive but in my judgement rather negative.
In this work I describe a classical analog of Grover's quantum searching algorithm, explaining why a quantum algorithm should be able to perform search in O(sqrtN) steps and also acting as a useful pedagogic demonstration.
It is well-known that when searching one out of four, the original Grover's search algorithm is exact; that is, it succeeds with certainty. It is natural to ask the inverse question: If we are not searching one out of four, is Grover's algorithm definitely not exact? A misunderstanding that an arbitrary phase rotation of the marked state together with the inversion about average operation in Grover's search algorithm can be used to construct a (less efficient) quantum search algorithm is cleared. The $π$ rotation of the phase of the marked state is not only the choice for efficiency, but also vital in Grover's quantum search algorithm. The results also show that Grover's quantum search algorithm is robust.
L. K. Grover's search algorithm in quantum computing gives an optimal, quadratic speedup in the search for a single object in a large unsorted database. In this paper, we generalize Grover's algorithm in a Hilbert-space framework for both continuous and discrete time cases that isolates its geometrical essence to the case where more than one object satisfies the search criterion.
We prove that it is impossible to built a universal quantum machine that produces reflections about an unknown state. We then point out a connection between this result and the optimality of Grover's search algorithm: if such reflection machines were available, it would be possible to accelerate Grover's search algorithm to exponential speedups.

We study the entanglement content of the states employed in the Grover algorithm after the first oracle call when a few searched items are concerned. We then construct a link between these initial states and hypergraphs, which provides an illustration of their entanglement properties.

External environment influences on Grover's search algorithm modeled by quantum noise are investigated. The algorithm is shown to be robust under that external dissipation. Explicitly we prove that the resulting search positive maps acting on unsorted N-dimensional database made of projective density matrices depend on x the strength of the environment, and that there are infinitely many x values for which search is successful after O(\sqrt{N}) queries. A physical implementation of the adiabatic Grover search is theoretically investigated in a system of N identical three-level atoms trapped in a single mode cavity. Some of the atoms are marked through the presence of an energy gap between their two ground states. The search is controlled by two partially delayed lasers which allow a deterministic adiabatic transfer from an initially entangled state to the marked states. Pulse schemes are proposed to satisfy the Grover speedup either exactly or approximately, and the success rate of the search is calculated.
There are major advantages in a newer version of Grover's quantum algorithm utilizing a general unitary transformation in the search of a single object in a large unsorted database. In this paper, we generalize this algorithm to multiobject search. We show the techniques to achieve the reduction of the problem to one on an invariant subspace of dimension just equal to two.

Grover's search algorithm searches a database of $N$ unsorted items in $O(\sqrt{N/M})$ steps where $M$ represents the number of solutions to the search problem. This paper proposes a scheme for searching a database of $N$ unsorted items in $O(logN)$ steps, provided the value of $M$ is known. It is also shown that when $M$ is unknown but if we can estimate an upper bound of possible values of $M$, then an improvement in the time complexity of conventional Grover's algorithm is possible. In that case, the present scheme reduces the time complexity to $O(MlogN)$.
Grover's quantum search algorithm is considered as one of the milestone in the field of quantum computing. The algorithm can search for a single match in a database with $N$ records in $O(\sqrt{N})$ assuming that the item must exist in the database with quadratic speedup over the best known classical algorithm. This review paper discusses the performance of Grover's algorithm in case of multiple matches where the problem is expected to be easier. The desired interference required for quantum computing may be modified by the wave function oscillations for the implementation of quantum algorithms[Phys.Rev.Lett.84(2000)1615]. Grover's quantum search algorithm provides a quadratic speedup over the classical one. The computational complexity is based on the number of queries to the oracle. However, depth is a more modern metric for noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers. We propose a new depth optimization method for quantum search algorithms. We show that Grover's algorithm is not optimal in depth. We propose a quantum search algorithm, which can be divided into several stages. We study the possibility of an implementation of N-qubit (N>3) Grover search in cavity QED, based on a fast operation of N-qubit controlled phase-flip with atoms in resonance with the cavity mode. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically that, our scheme could be achieved efficiently to find a marked state with high fidelity and high success probability. As cavity decay is involved in our quantum trajectory treatment, we could analytically understand the implementation of a Grover search subject to dissipation, which would be very helpful for relevant experiments.
Entanglement plays a crucial role in quantum processes particularly those pertaining to quantum information and computation. An analytical expression for an entanglement measure defined in terms of success rate of Grover's search algorithm has been obtained for qutrit systems with real coefficients and the calculated results agree well with the conventional entropy based measure. The entanglement measure is further generalised for qudit (d-level) systems with real coefficients.
The main idea in the original Grover search (Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 325 (1997)) is to single out a target state containing the solution to a search problem by amplifying the amplitude of the state, following the Oracle's job, i.e., a black box giving us information about the target state. We design quantum circuits to accomplish a complete Grover search involving both the Oracle's job and the amplification of the target state, which are employed to solve Satisfiability (SAT) problems. I improve the tight bound on quantum searching by Boyer et al. (quant-ph/9605034) to a matching bound, thus showing that for any probability of success Grovers quantum searching algorithm is optimal. E.g. for near certain success we have to query the oracle pi/4 sqrt{N} times, where N is the size of the search space. I also show that unfortunately quantum searching cannot be parallelized better than by assigning different parts of the search space to independent quantum computers. Earlier results left open the possibility of a more efficient parallelization.

Grover's algorithm is a quantum search algorithm that proceeds by repeated applications of the Grover operator and the Oracle until the state evolves to one of the target states. In the standard version of the algorithm, the Grover operator inverts the sign on only one state. We report the implementation of Grover's quantum search algorithm in the scalable system of trapped atomic ion quantum bits. Any one of four possible states of a two-qubit memory is marked, and following a single query of the search space, the marked element is successfully recovered with an average probability of 60(2)%. This exceeds the performance of any possible classical search algorithm, which can only succeed with a maximum average probability of 50%.
A quantum circuit to construct all maximal cliques using Grover search algorithm is presented. This oracle circuit takes as input an n-qubit state |x> and the adjacency matrix data A of an n-node network, and outputs the state (-1)^f(x) |x> where f(x)=1 if |x> is a maximal clique, and f(x)=0, otherwise. The oracle workspace requires 2n^2 qubits. Each oracle call makes about 10n^2 calls to the Toffoli gates. The overall Grover search algorithm takes as input a uniform superposition n-qubit state and the adjacency matrix data, and outputs a uniform superposition of all maximal clique states.
The present letter proposes a modification in the well known Grover's search algorithm, which searches a database of $N$ unsorted items in $O(\sqrt{N/M})$ steps, where $M$ represents the number of solutions to the search problem. Concurrency control techniques and extra registers for marking and storing the solutions are used in the modified algorithm. This requires additional space but it is shown that the use of extra register and marking techniques can reduce the time complexity to $O(M+\log N)$.
In this work we address two questions concerning Grover's algorithm. In the first we give an answer to the question how to employ Grover's algorithm for actual search over database. We introduce a quantum model of an unordered phone book (quantum database) with programmable queries to search in the phone book either for a number, or for a name. Pathak proposed a modified Grover algorithm that would exponentially accelerate the unsorted database search problem if the number of marked items is known. If this were true, it would represent a major fundamental breakthrough in computer science, mathematics, quantum information and other related branches of sciences. We demonstrate the implementation of Grover's quantum search algorithm on a liquid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum computer using essentially pure states. This was achieved using a two qubit device where the initial state is an essentially pure ($ε=1.06\pm0.04$) singlet nuclear spin state of a pair of 1H nuclei arising from a chemical reaction involving para-hydrogen. We have implemented Grover's search to find one of four inputs which satisfies a function.
Grover's algorithm is usually described in terms of the iteration of a compound operator of the form $Q = - H I_{0} H I_{x_0}$. Although it is quite straightforward to verify the algebra of the iteration, this gives little insight into why the algorithm works. What is the significance of the compound structure of $Q$? Why is there a minus sign? Later it was discovered that $H$ could be replaced by essentially any unitary $U$. What is the freedom involved here? We give a description of Grover's algorithm which provides some clarification of these questions.

We analyze the role played by entanglement in the dynamical evolution of Grover's search algorithm in the space of qubits. We show that the algorithm can be equivalently described as an iterative change of the entanglement between the qubits, which governs the evolution of the initial state towards the target state, and where the entanglement can be quantified in terms a single entanglement monotone. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the quadratic speedup, which illustrates how the change in the bipartite entanglement of the state after each iteration determines the corr…
We point out that the main results-the analytic expressions for the Groverian Measure of Entanglement, in the above mentioned paper are erroneous. The technical mistake of the paper is discussed. It is shown by an explicit example that the formula for calculating the Groverian measure yields G(|ψ>) = 0 for some entangled states.
We present efficient methods to implement the quantum computing Grover search algorithm using the Rydberg blockade interaction. We show that simple pi-pulse excitation sequences between ground and Rydberg excited states readily produce the key conditional phase shift and inversion-about-the mean unitary operations for the Grover search. Multi-qubit implementation schemes suitable for different properties of the atomic interactions are identifed and the error scaling of the protocols with system size is found to be promising for immediate experimental investigation.
We propose a potentially practical scheme for realization of an n-qubit (n>2) conditional phase flip (CPF) gate and implementation of Grover search algorithm in the ion-trap system. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically that, our scheme could be achieved efficiently to find a marked state with high fidelity and high success probability. The success probability of a search of $M$ targets from a database of size $N$, using Grover's search algorithm depends critically on the number of iterations of the composite operation of the oracle followed by Grover's diffusion operation. We calculate the amount of entanglement of the multiqubit quantum states employed in the Grover algorithm, by following its dynamics at each step of the computation. We show that genuine multipartite entanglement is always present. Remarkably, the dynamics of any type of entanglement as well as of genuine multipartite entanglement is independent of the number n of qubits for large n, thus exhibiting a scale invariance property. Following the proposal by F. Yamaguchi et al.[Phys. Rev. A 66, 010302 (R) (2002)], we present an alternative way to implement the two-qubit Grover search algorithm in cavity QED. Compared with F. Yamaguchi et al.'s proposal, with a strong resonant classical field added, our method is insensitive to both the cavity decay and thermal field, and doesn't require that the cavity remain in the vacuum state throughout the procedure. In order to understand the bounds of utilization of the Grover's search algorithm for the large unstructured data in presence of the quantum computer noise, we undertake a series of simulations by inflicting various types of noise, modelled by the IBM QISKit. Using Grover algorithm, this work investigates a technique for encoding search phrases used in wildcard searches. The technique involves creating a phase Oracle that loads data into a quantum circuit together with the search terms that have been encoded. The method entails constructing a phase Oracle programmatically using encoded input information and encoded search terms. By combining Grover diffusion operator with the phase Oracle, Hadamard gates, and zero-initialized three-qubit states, a complete quantum circuit is created. Using resonant interaction of three Rydberg atoms with a single-mode microwave cavity, we consider a realization of three-qubit Grover search algorithm in the presence of weak cavity decay, based on a previous idea for three-qubit quantum gate [Phys. Rev. A 73, 064304 (2006)]. We simulate the searching process under the influence of the cavity decay and show that our scheme could be achieved efficiently to find the marked state with high fidelity. The required operations are very close to the reach with current cavity QED techniques.
We describe an implementation of Grover's fixed-point quantum search algorithm on a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum computer, searching for either one or two matching items in an unsorted database of four items. In this new algorithm the target state (an equally weighted superposition of the matching states) is a fixed point of the recursive search operator, and so the algorithm always moves towards the desired state. The effects of systematic errors in the implementation are briefly explored.
