Superselection rules induced by the interaction with the environment are a basis to understand the emergence of classical observables within quantum theory. The aim of this article is to investigate the decoherence effects, which lead to superselection sectors, with the help of exactly soluble Hamiltonian models. Starting from the examples of Araki and of Zurek more general models with scattering are presented for which the projection operators onto the induced superselection sectors do no longer commute with the Hamiltonian. The example of an environment given by a free quantum field indicates that infrared divergence plays an essential role for the emergence of induced superselection sectors. For all models the induced superselection sectors are uniquely determined by the Hamiltonian, whereas the time scale of the decoherence depends crucially on the initial state of the total system.
Decoherence effects associated to the damping of a tunneling two-level system are shown to dominate the tunneling probability at short times in strong coupling regimes in the context of a soluble model. A general decomposition of tunneling rates in dissipative and unitary parts is implemented. Master equation treatments fail to describe the model system correctly when more than a single relaxation time is involved.
In the paper "Conditionally exactly soluble class of quantum potentials" by A. de Souza Dutra [Phys. Rev. A 47 (1993) R2435] the whole $s-$wave spectrum of bound states in potentials $V_1(r)=A/r+B/r^{1/2}+G_0/r^2$ with $G_0=-3\hbar/32μ$ and $V_2(r)=A r^{2/3}+B/r^{2/3}+g_0/r^2$ with $g_0=-5\hbar^2/72μ$ has been constructed in closed form. We show that both the result and the method of its derivation are not correct.
Shallow one-dimensional double well potentials appear in atomic and molecular physics and other fields. Unlike the "deep" wells of macroscopic quantum coherent systems, shallow double wells need not present low-lying two-level systems. We argue that this feature, the absence of a low-lying two-level system in certain shallow double wells, may allow the finding of new test grounds for quantum mechanics in mesoscopic systems. We illustrate the above ideas with a family of shallow double wells obtained from Bargman potentials through the Darboux-Bäcklund transform.
We investigate the entanglement-related features of the eigenstates of two exactly soluble atomic models: a one-dimensional three-electron Moshinsky model, and a three-dimensional two-electron Moshinsky system in an external uniform magnetic field. We analytically compute the amount of entanglement exhibited by the wavefunctions corresponding to the ground, first and second excited states of the three-electron model. We found that the amount of entanglement of the system tends to increase with energy, and in the case of excited states we found a finite amount of entanglement in the limit of va…
Recently, Belhadi and al. (2014) developed a new approach to quantize classical soluble systems based on the calculation of brackets among fundamental variables using the constants of integration (CI method). In this paper, we will apply this approach in some exactly soluble constrained Hamiltonian systems. We will complete our work with some applications in quantum field theory : Majorana neutrino, the scalar field on the light-cone, the O(2) nonlinear sigma model and the chiral boson theory. Key words : Quantization, constrainted systems, field theory, soluble systems, integration constants.
We study a model of dephasing (decoherence) in a two-state quantum system (qubit) coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators. An exact analytic solution for the reduced dynamics of a two-state system in this model has been obtained previously for factorizing initial states of the combined system. We show that the model admits exact solutions for a large class of correlated initial states which are typical in the theory of quantum measurements. We derive exact expressions for the off-diagonal elements of the qubit density matrix, which hold for an arbitrary strength of coupling between the qubit…
We investigate the decoherence of histories of local densities for linear oscillators models. It is shown that histories of local number, momentum and energy density are approximately decoherent, when coarse-grained over sufficiently large volumes. Decoherence arises directly from the proximity of these variables to exactly conserved quantities (which are exactly decoherent), and not from environmentally-induced decoherence. We discuss the approach to local equilibrium and the subsequent emergence of hydrodynamic equations for the local densities.
Continuous and discrete superselection rules induced by the interaction with the environment are investigated for a class of exactly soluble Hamiltonian models. The environment is given by a Boson field. Stable superselection sectors emerge if and only if the low frequences dominate and the ground state of the Boson field disappears due to infrared divergence. The models allow uniform estimates of all transition matrix elements between different superselection sectors.
A simple 1-D relativistic model for a diatomic molecule with a double point interaction potential is solved exactly in a constant electric field. The Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira method is used to evaluate the spectral density function, allowing the correct normalization of continuum states. The boundary conditions at the potential wells are evaluated using Colombeau's generalized function theory along with charge conjugation invariance and general properties of self-adjoint extensions for point-like interactions. The resulting spectral density function exhibits resonances for quasibound states whi…
In this paper we investigate a open two-qubit model whose dynamics is not exactly solvable. When the initial state is the maximum entangled state, as the exactly solvable open two-qubit model [D. Tolkunov and V. Privman, Phys. Rev. A 71, 060308(R) (2005)], the decay of entanglement of formation of the model, expressed by concurrence is also governed by the product of suppression factors describing decoherence of the subsystems (qubits). However, if the initial state is not the maximum entangled state, its concurrence will decrease faster than the product of the suppression factors describing d…
Cartan's spacetime reformulation of the Newtonian theory of gravity is a generally-covariant Galilean-relativistic limit-form of Einstein's theory of gravity known as the Newton-Cartan theory. According to this theory, space is flat, time is absolute with instantaneous causal influences, and the degenerate `metric' structure of spacetime remains fixed with two mutually orthogonal non-dynamical metrics, one spatial and the other temporal. The spacetime according to this theory is, nevertheless, curved, duly respecting the principle of equivalence, and the non-metric gravitational connection-fie…
We present a simple exactly solvable extension of of the Jaynes-Cummings model by adding dissipation. This is done such that the total number of excitations is conserved. The Liouville operator in the resulting master equation can be reduced to blocks of $4\times 4$ matrices.
We consider a particular (exactly soluble) model of the one discussed in a previous work. We show numerical results for the time evolution of the main dynamical quantities and compare them with analytical results.
The Z_2 topological order in Z_2 spin liquid and in exactly soluble Kitaev toric code model is the simplest topological order for 2+1D bosonic systems. More general 2+1D bosonic topologically ordered states can be constructed via exact soluble string-net models. However, the most important topologically ordered phases of matter are arguably the fermionic fractional quantum Hall states. Topological phases of matter for fermion systems are strictly richer than their bosonic counterparts because locality has different meanings for the two kinds of systems. In this paper, we describe a simple ferm…
Environment induced decoherence entails the absence of quantum interference phenomena from the macroworld. The loss of coherence between superposed wave packets depends on their separation. The precise temporal course depends on the relative size of the time scales for decoherence and other processes taking place in the open system and its environment. We use the exactly solvable model of an harmonic oscillator coupled to a bath of oscillators to illustrate various decoherence scenarios: These range from exponential golden-rule decay for microscopic superpositions, system-specific decay for la…
We present a nonlinear decoherence model which models decoherence effect caused by various decohereing sources in a quantum system through a nonlinear coupling between the system and its environment, and apply it to investigating decoherence in nonclassical motional states of a single trapped ion. We obtain an exactly analytic solution of the model and find very good agreement with experimental results for the population decay rate of a single trapped ion observed in the NIST experiments by Meekhof and coworkers (D. M. Meekhof, {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 76}, 1796 (1996)).
We analyze the quantum entanglement at the equilibrium in a class of exactly solvable one-dimensional spin models at finite temperatures and identify a region where the quantum fluctuations determine the behavior of the system. We probe the response of the system in this region by studying the spin dynamics after projective measurement of one local spin which leads to the appearance of the ``decoherence wave''. We investigate time-dependent spin correlation functions, the entanglement dynamics, and the fidelity of the quantum information transfer after the measurement.
We investigate the effects of the initial correlation on the dynamics of open system in the exactly solvable pure dephasing model. We show that the role of the initial correlation come into play through a phase function and a weight factor, which would perform oscillations during time evolution, and find that the decoherence of a qubit coupled to a boson bath is more enhanced with respect to a spin bath in the short time. We also demonstrate that the trace distance between two states of a qubit can increase above its initial value, and that the initial correlation can provide another resource …
We examine an exactly solvable model of decoherence - a spin-system interacting with a collection of environment spins. We show that in this model (introduced some time ago to illustrate environment-induced superselection) generic assumptions about the coupling strengths lead to a universal (Gaussian) suppression of coherence between pointer states. We explore the regimes of validity of these results and discuss their relation to the spectral features of the environment and to the Loschmidt echo (or fidelity). Finally, we comment on the observation of such time dependence in spin echo experime…
We study the intrinsic decoherence of coupled harmonic oscillators. The Milburn master equation is solved exactly, and the dynamics of virtual ground state excitations are investigated. The interaction of quantum correlations and virtual excitation was then studied. The following is a summary of our major findings. (i) The damped oscillatory profile of all three quantities is the same. (ii) Ultra-strong coupling combined with huge anisotropy values results in the reemergence of entanglement and steering. (iii) To sustain entanglement and steering, virtual excitations are required. (iv) The qua…
We investigate decoherence-free evolution (DFE) of quantum discord (QD) for two initially-correlated qubits in two finite-temperature reservoirs using an exactly solvable model. We study QD dynamics of the two qubits coupled to two independent Ohmic reservoirs when the two qubits are initially prepared in X-type quantum states. It is found that reservoir temperature significantly affects the DFE dynamics. We show that it is possible to control the DFE and to prolong the DFE time by choosing suitable parameters of the two-qubit system and reservoirs.
Exactly solvable models provide an opportunity to study different aspects of reduced quantum dynamics in detail. We consider the reduced dynamics of a single spin in finite XX and XY spin 1/2 chains. First we introduce a general expression describing the evolution of the reduced density matrix. This expression proves to be tractable when the combined closed system (i.e. open system plus environment) is integrable. Then we focus on comparing decoherence and thermalization timescales in the XX chain. We find that for a single spin these timescales are comparable, in contrast to what should be ex…
We present an open loop (bang-bang) scheme to control decoherence in a generic one-qubit quantum gate and implement it in a realistic simulation. The system is consistently described within the spin-boson model, with interactions accounting for both adiabatic and thermal decoherence. The external control is included from the beginning in the Hamiltonian as an independent interaction term. After tracing out the environment modes, reduced equations are obtained for the two-level system in which the effects of both decoherence and external control appear explicitly. The controls are determined ex…
We study dynamics of nonclassical correlations by exactly solving a model consisting of two atomic qubits with spontaneous emission. We find that the nonclassical correlations defined by different measures give different qualitative characterizations of those correlations. The relative behaviors of those correlation measures are presented explicitly for various quantum states in the two-qubit atomic system. In particular, we find that the robustness of quantum correlations can be greatly enhanced by performing appropriate local unitary operations on the initial state of the system.
Decoherence of quantum systems from entanglement with an unmonitored environment is to date the most compelling explanation of the emergence of a classical picture from a quantum world. While it is well understood for a single Lindblad operator, the role in the einselection process of a complex system-environment interaction remains to be clarified. In this paper, we analyze an open quantum dynamics inspired by CQED experiments with two non-commuting Lindblad operators modeling decoherence in the number basis and dissipative decoherence in the coherent state basis. We study and solve exactly t…
We study the dynamics of entanglement in spin gases. A spin gas consists of a (large) number of interacting particles whose random motion is described classically while their internal degrees of freedom are described quantum-mechanically. We determine the entanglement that occurs naturally in such systems for specific types of quantum interactions. At the same time, these systems provide microscopic models for non--Markovian decoherence: the interaction of a group of particles with other particles belonging to a background gas are treated exactly, and differences between collective and non--co…
By considering an exactly solvable model of a two interacting spin-1/2 qubits described by the Heisenberg anisotropic interaction in the presence of intrinsic decoherence, we study the dynamics of entanglement quantified by the concurrence and measurement-induced nonlocality (MIN) based on Hilbert-Schmidt norm and trace distance with different initial conditions. We highlight the relationship between the entanglement and MIN for the pure initial state. For an initial separable state, it is found that the robustness and the generation of the quantum correlations depend on the physical parameter…
This paper explores the possibility that an exactly decoherent set of histories may be constructed from an approximately decoherent set by small distortions of the operators characterizing the histories. In particular, for the case of histories of positions and momenta, this is achieved by doubling the set of operators and then finding, amongst this enlarged set, new position and momentum operators which commute, so decohere exactly, and which are ``close'' to the original operators. The enlarged, exactly decoherent, theory has the same classical dynamics as the original one, and coincides wit…
Macroscopic systems are described most completely by local densities (particle number, momentum and energy) yet the superposition states of such physical variables, indicated by the Everett interpretation, are not observed. In order to explain this, it is argued that histories of local number, momentum and energy density are approximately decoherent when coarse-grained over sufficiently large volumes. Decoherence arises directly from the proximity of these variables to exactly conserved quantities (which are exactly decoherent), and not from environmentally-induced decoherence. We discuss the …
A pure state decoheres into a mixed state as it entangles with an environment. When an entangled two-mode system is embedded in a thermal environment, however, each mode may not be entangled with its environment by their simple linear interaction. We consider an exactly solvable model to study the dynamics of a total system, which is composed of an entangled two-mode system and a thermal environment, and also an array of infinite beam splitters. It is shown that many-body entanglement of the system and the environment plays a crucial role in the process of disentangling the system.
We examine two exactly solvable models of decoherence -- a central spin-system, (i) with and (ii) without a self--Hamiltonian, interacting with a collection of environment spins. In the absence of a self--Hamiltonian we show that in this model (introduced some time ago to illustrate environment--induced superselection) generic assumptions about the coupling strengths can lead to a universal (Gaussian) suppression of coherence between pointer states. On the other hand, we show that when the dynamics of the central spin is dominant a different regime emerges, which is characterized by a non--Gau…
Based on a generic quantum open system model, we study the geometric nature of decoherence by defining a complex-valued geometric phase through stochastic pure states describing non-unitary, non-cyclic and non-adiabatic evolutions. The ensemble average of the complex geometric phases for the pure stochastic states yields a conventional geometric phase together with an amplitude factor. We show that the decoherence process described by the decaying amplitude can be a geometric quantity independent of the system's dynamics. It is a remarkable fact that the geometric phase of a quantum system can…
We compare approaches to evaluation of decoherence at low temperatures in two-state quantum systems weakly coupled to the environment. By analyzing an exactly solvable model, we demonstrate that a non-Markovian approximation scheme yields good quality estimates of the reduced density matrix for time scales appropriate for evaluation of quantum computing designs.
In Everett's many worlds interpretation, where quantum measurements are seen as decoherence events, inexact decoherence may let large worlds mangle the memories of observers in small worlds, creating a cutoff in observable world size. I solve a growth-drift-diffusion-absorption model of such a mangled worlds scenario, and show that it reproduces the Born probability rule closely, though not exactly. Thus deviations from exact decoherence can allow the Born rule to be derived in a many worlds approach via world counting, using a finite number of worlds and no new fundamental physics.
We present analytical results for the time-dependent information entropy in exactly solvable two-state (qubit) models. The first model describes dephasing (decoherence) in a qubit coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators. The entropy production for this model in the regimes of "complete" and "incomplete" decoherence is discussed. As another example, we consider the damped Jaynes-Cummings model describing a spontaneous decay of a two-level system into the field vacuum. It is shown that, for all strengths of coupling, the open system passes through the mixed state with the maximum information e…
The probabilities a Bayesian agent assigns to a set of events typically change with time, for instance when the agent updates them in the light of new data. In this paper we address the question of how an agent's probabilities at different times are constrained by Dutch-book coherence. We review and attempt to clarify the argument that, although an agent is not forced by coherence to use the usual Bayesian conditioning rule to update his probabilities, coherence does require the agent's probabilities to satisfy van Fraassen's [1984] reflection principle (which entails a related constraint poin…
Current quantum orthodoxy claims that the statistical collapse of the wave-function arises from the interaction of the measuring instrument with its environment through the phenomenon known as environment induced decoherence. Here it is shown that there exists a measurement scheme that is exactly decohering without the aid of an environment. The scheme relies on the assumption that the meter is decomposable into probe and pointer, with the probe taken to be inaccessible for observation. Under the assumption that the probe and the pointer initial states are momentum limited, it is shown that co…
A single quantum dissipative oscillator described by the Lindblad equation serves as a model for a nanosystem. This model is solved exactly by using the ambiguity function. The solution shows the features of decoherence (spatial extent of quantum behavior), correlation (spatial scale over which the system localizes to its physical dimensions), and mixing (mixed- state spatial correlation). A new relation between these length scales is obtained here. By varying the parameters contained in the Lindblad equation, it is shown that decoherence and correlation can be controlled. We indicate possible…
We study a general quantum system interacting with environment modeled by the bosonic heat bath of Caldeira and Leggett type. General interaction Hamiltonians are considered that commute with the system's Hamiltonian so that there is no energy exchange between the system and bath. We argue that this model provides an appropriate description of adiabatic quantum decoherence, i.e., loss of entanglement on time scales short compared to those of thermal relaxation processes associated with energy exchange with the bath. The interaction Hamiltonian is then proportional to a conserved "pointer obser…
We discuss the evolution of purity in mixed quantum/classical approaches to electronic nonadiabatic dynamics in the context of the Ehrenfest model. As it is impossible to exactly determine initial conditions for a realistic system, we choose to work in the statistical Ehrenfest formalism that we introduced in Ref. 1. From it, we develop a new framework to determine exactly the change in the purity of the quantum subsystem along the evolution of a statistical Ehrenfest system. In a simple case, we verify how and to which extent Ehrenfest statistical dynamics makes a system with more than one cl…
We discuss the case of a Markovian master equation for an open system, as it is frequently found from environmental decoherence. We prove two theorems for the evolution of the quantum state. The first one states that for a generic initial state the corresponding Wigner function becomes strictly positive after a finite time has elapsed. The second one states that also the P-function becomes exactly positive after a decoherence time of the same order. Therefore the density matrix becomes exactly decomposable into a mixture of Gaussian pointer states.
We present an approach that allows quantifying decoherence processes in an open quantum system subject to external time-dependent control. Interactions with the environment are modeled by a standard bosonic heat bath. We develop two unitarity-preserving approximation schemes to calculate the reduced density matrix. One of the approximations relies on a short-time factorization of the evolution operator, while the other utilizes expansion in terms of the system-bath coupling strength. Applications are reported for two illustrative systems: an exactly solvable adiabatic model, and a model of a r…
We study the robustness and fragility of entanglement of open quantum systems in some exactly solvable models in which the decoherence is caused by a pure dephasing process. In particular, for the toy models presented in this paper, we identify two different time scales, one is responsible for local dephasing, while the other is for entanglement decay. For a class of fragile entangled states defined in this paper, we find that the entanglement of two qubits, as measured by concurrence, decays faster asymptotically than the quantum dephasing of an individual qubit.
Although nonequilibrium work and fluctuation relations have been studied in detail within classical statistical physics, extending these results to open quantum systems has proven to be conceptually difficult. For systems that undergo decoherence but not dissipation, we argue that it is natural to define quantum work exactly as for isolated quantum systems, using the two-point measurement protocol. Complementing previous theoretical analysis using quantum channels, we show that the nonequilibrium work relation remains valid in this situation, and we test this assertion experimentally using a s…
In this paper it is shown that exact decoherence to minimal uncertainty Gaussian pointer states is generic for free quantum particles coupled to a heat bath. More specifically, the paper is concerned with damped free particles linearly coupled under product initial conditions to a heat bath at arbitrary temperature, with arbitrary coupling strength and spectral densities covering the Ohmic, subohmic, and supraohmic regime. Then it is true that there exists a time t_c such that for times t>t_c the state can always be exactly represented as a mixture (convex combination) of particular minimal un…
Quantum decoherence is the loss of a system's purity due to its interaction with the surrounding environment. Via the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study how a system decoheres when its environment is a strongly-coupled theory. In the Feynman-Vernon formalism, we compute the influence functional holographically by relating it to the generating function of Schwinger-Keldysh propagators and thereby obtain the dynamics of the system's density matrix. We present two exactly solvable examples: (1) a straight string in a BTZ black hole and (2) a scalar probe in AdS$_5$. We prepare an initial state that…
